Hatley Castle, located in Colwood, is a historic mansion and estate with formal gardens that has served as a residence and naval training facility. Built in 1908, this National Historic Site is now open to the public and also used by Royal Roads University. The castle has been featured in various films and TV series, making it a popular tourist attraction. Additionally, it played a significant role during World War II when it was considered as a potential royal residence for King George VI's family.
A truly magical place It is like stepping into a fairytale. The architecture is stunning, and the gardens are beautifully maintained—perfect for a peaceful walk or photos. I loved learning about its history and exploring the surrounding grounds. Great spot for visitors, history lovers, or anyone who appreciates nature and beauty. A little further down, there’s also a small forest trail that leads to a beach-like spot—peaceful and scenic, perfect for relaxing. A must-visit if you’re in the area!

Hatley Castle is absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit! The grounds are peaceful and perfect for walking, exploring, and taking photos. The architecture of the castle is stunning, and the gardens are so well-kept — it feels like stepping into a fairytale. There’s also the option to take guided tours, which is a great way to learn more about the rich history of the castle and the estate. There’s so much to see in the area beyond the castle itself — from forested paths to scenic views — you could easily spend several hours here. A perfect spot for history lovers, photographers, or anyone just looking for a relaxing and inspiring place to visit. Highly recommended!
Jessica G — Google review
Had a beautiful morning wandering the grounds and made a new friend. This beautiful peacock was just chilling and being admired from a safe distance. Until a child walked, started yelling to get her parents attention, causing more people to approach and surround him trying to pet him and get closer. He jumped on top of the wall to escape them. Humans need to be more respectful of spaces and animals. Your phones are all capable of zooming in to capture a subject.... utilize that function more.

Such a stunning spot! While we didn’t book a tour, just walking the grounds was breathtaking! The castle itself was spectacular, the gardens are very well kept and lovely to walk around. There was also another garden area where you can walk around and explore however, we were there on a hot day and opted not to. While there is paid parking, I think it’s worth the trip :)
Krista R — Google review
The gardens are free/no tickets required. The castle itself requires a fee entrance and schedule time! There is a cafe that’s part of the university (Habitat Cafe). The gardens is more extensive than I thought. Well kept and beautiful flowers.

A truly stunning place 🤩. I couldn’t go inside because there was a private event, but walking around the exterior was absolutely worth it. The castle looks like something out of a fairytale, and the surrounding gardens are simply beautiful 🌿. The views are peaceful, inspiring, and perfect for amazing photos 📸✨. Definitely a must-visit for anyone who loves history, nature, or sharing great shots on social media.
Marco A — Google review
A beautiful and historically rich spot that feels straight out of a movie set. The architecture is striking, and the surrounding gardens are peaceful and well-maintained. Great for a quiet walk, photos, or just soaking in a bit of local history. It can get busy with tours and events, but there’s still plenty of space to enjoy. Ideal for anyone into architecture, nature, or just wanting something a little different from the usual Victoria sights.
Val T — Google review
I would go here over and over again. It was so beautiful. The garden is spectacular. The guided tour was very informational and brought you through the downstairs of the house. There are peacocks around the property that give it a magical touch as well.

Hatley Park National Historic Site

4.7
(572)
Park
Hatley Park National Historic Site is a captivating Elizabethan-style castle completed in 1910, surrounded by meticulously maintained gardens and scenic trails. The site, located on the grounds of Royal Roads University, offers a fairy-tale setting for weddings with its historic Ball Room and heritage gardens providing an enchanting backdrop. Despite rumors of being haunted, the castle stands as a well-preserved relic of the past, offering visitors a glimpse into centuries gone by.
This is a wonderful place to go with a family or for a solitary walk. There are beautiful buildings, rolling hills, fantastic views, wildlife, water and a beach. The large grounds offer places to sit and think, gardens to peruse and above all a castle. A great place for a walk, but find a place to park as it costs $1/h to park.
Tim J — Google review
I always ♥ coming here and strolling the grounds. The staff do such an amazing job tending to the gardens. The castle itself is closed to the public due to some kind of pandemic. My little place of zen is in the Japanese Garden, it is filled with tiny pagodas and a little lake/pond to sit by. It also has this tree that looks like a massive bonsai tree from certain angles. This is also the location of the X men home in marvel movies and of course our local hero, Ryan Reynolds in his deadpool movies. The Garden is free to roam around so definitely come check it out.
Booyaka ( — Google review
Such a beautiful place to explore! Gorgeous tress, and the gardens are an amazing way to spend an afternoon wandering around! Plus, there just something about randomly wandering peacocks that add a bit of magic to your adventure!
The L — Google review
The castle was cool to see, although because of COVID you can’t go inside at this time. The gardens are free to enter and are absolutely lovely! Definitely worth a stop.
Laura M — Google review
Beautiful, wonderful, I will go back again and again! Will do an inside tour on my next visit for sure! This is Professor X school for the gifted in the Xmen movies and Deadpool 2. Peacocks roam freely, many squirrels. Beautiful gardens and forest all around. It's a vancouver island paradise.
DR D — Google review
Beautiful garden! Too bad that the tours inside the castle weren't available yet. Fans of X-Men should definitely come visit.
Rodrigo C — Google review
We enjoyed the garden and pity that few areas were closed because of private event (wedding). Wished to visit inside the Hatley Castle! Since 1995, the mansion and estate have been used for the public Royal Roads University.
Dr. T — Google review
They had a private event going on and shut down all tours. My first stop after the ferry ride was here and I wasted an hour just to tour the front door myself. Would have been nice if they updated their website. I never got the chance to tour the castle. But it's beautiful, regardless. Wish I could have seen it!

Heritage Fish Ladder

4.6
(5)
Scenic spot
The Heritage Fish Ladder, situated in Hatley Heritage Park, has been in operation for over a century. It serves as a crucial passage for fish to navigate from one point to another due to human interference with their natural path. The site was restored in 2008 and offers a wonderful opportunity for families to observe the mesmerizing sight of fish swimming.
The Heritage Fishing Ladder, located on University Drive in Victoria, is a fantastic spot for anyone interested in nature and local wildlife. This hidden gem showcases the region's commitment to preserving natural habitats while providing a unique educational experience. Scenic Views: The ladder is gracefully perched along the water, presenting enchanting vistas of the surrounding landscape. It's a serene sanctuary, ideal for a leisurely stroll or simply basking in the tranquility by the water, serenaded by the soothing sounds of nature. Wildlife Watching: One of the highlights of visiting the fishing ladder is seeing salmon during their migration. These fish navigating the ladder are fascinating, making it an excellent spot for photography and nature enthusiasts. Accessibility: The area is conveniently accessible, with well-maintained paths leading to the ladder. With benches strategically placed nearby, you can comfortably unwind and soak in the view, feeling at ease and relaxed. Educational Aspect: Informational signs explain the significance of the fishing ladder and the local ecosystem, making it a great spot for families and students to learn more about the area’s wildlife and conservation efforts. Tips for Visitors: Bring your camera, as you’ll want to capture the beautiful scenery! If you visit during salmon season, watching the fish in action is even more exciting. Please dress in layers, as it can get chilly by the water, especially in the early morning or evening. The Heritage Fishing Ladder is a lovely destination that combines education, nature, and relaxation. Whether you're a local or a visitor, it's worth stopping by to appreciate Victoria's natural beauty.
Lea T — Google review
The heritage fish ladder is actually pretty neat. I have never seen a fish climb it but apparently they can! The whole surrounding area is really lovely. Take a stroll up past the fish ladder to two very serene ponds and a gate that leads into the royal roads garden. Just past the fish ladder is the beautiful Hately Castle. The whole area is definitely worth exploring.

Nice relaxing place to sit and enjoy nature. This is part of the Hatley Park National Historic Site and Japanese Gardens. There are benches here to sit and enjoy. You will not be disappointed in coming here and enjoying the whole area.

(Translated by Google) Great place to relax, lots of ducks and geese near a picturesque lake; the stream flowing from the lake is decorated with a small bridge: you can sit in the shade and listen to the water running. Nearby there is a canopy and a place to sit for a couple of people. There is no toilet, and there is no drinking water nearby.

The Japanese Garden, nestled within Hatley Heritage Park since 1908, offers a serene and tranquil atmosphere. Visitors can stroll along pathways adorned with stone lanterns and admire the vibrant azaleas, primroses, and cherry blossoms in early spring. The garden's diverse features include charming ponds, old-growth trees, rose gardens, formal landscapes, and forest trails.
Japanese gardens are designed landscapes that embody the aesthetics of traditional Japanese culture. They are renowned for their beauty, tranquility, and the careful attention to detail in their design and plant selection. Here are some details about what a Japanese garden typically contains and why they are famous: Features of a Japanese Garden: 1. Water Elements: Ponds, streams, and waterfalls are common features. Water symbolizes purity and is often used to reflect the beauty of the surroundings. 2. Rocks and Gravel: Rocks are carefully placed to represent mountains or islands, and gravel is often raked to symbolize water ripples, adding to the garden's serene aesthetic. 3. Plants: A variety of plants are used, including evergreens, cherry blossoms, maples, and bamboo. Each plant is selected for its seasonal beauty and symbolic meaning. 4. Bridges: Arched wooden bridges often cross ponds or streams, symbolizing the passage between different realms or stages of life. 5. Lanterns: Traditional stone lanterns (ishi-doro) are placed strategically throughout the garden, adding a sense of elegance and guiding the way during the evening. 6. Seating Areas: Benches or tea houses provide spaces for contemplation and relaxation, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the garden's tranquility. 7. Pathways: Curving paths lead visitors through the garden, encouraging exploration and reflection. The winding nature of the paths often creates a sense of mystery. 8. Symbolic Elements: Many features are imbued with cultural symbolism, such as cranes for longevity or pine trees for resilience. Reasons for Fame: Aesthetic Beauty: Japanese gardens are celebrated for their breathtaking beauty and harmonious design, often viewed as living art that changes with the seasons. Cultural Significance: They reflect deep philosophical and spiritual principles, including Zen Buddhism and Shinto beliefs, emphasizing a connection with nature. Meditative Spaces: These gardens are designed to promote peace and contemplation, making them popular retreats for meditation and relaxation. - **Cultural Heritage**: Japanese gardens are an important part of Japan's cultural heritage and have influenced garden design worldwide Tourist Attractions: Many Japanese gardens are located in public parks, temples, and cultural sites, attracting visitors from around the world. In summary, Japanese gardens are famous for their exquisite design, tranquil environments, and rich cultural meanings, making them a treasured aspect of both Japanese culture and global landscape design.

Good location for a walk. A bit disappointed though, for a Japanese garden I would have expected it to be much better maintained. Perhaps this was due to visiting during the summer in the off-season, but the plants and pond seemed quite overgrown and poorly kept. Unfortunately we weren't able to visit the adjacent building either since it was closed. The neighbouring Italian Garden outside the Hatley Castle was much more impressive, I highly reccomend checking that out too if you're in the area.
Joshua K — Google review
PROS: -Walking through this Japanese park was a peaceful and tranquil experience. -Many nice water features. -Nicely landscaped CONS: -Weed control in the rose garden is lacking. Thistles are flourishing. OVERAL IMPRESSION Well done park. It's very peaceful to walk around d this fully treed park. Worthwhile to visit.
Herbert B — Google review
This place makes a grown man cry as it has so much potential & it was obviously designed by someone who knew what they doing....Unfortunately, the Japanese garden appears that it has been neglected for quite awhile now and is poorly maintained, i.e weeds are everywhere, the pond stinks from too much algae build up, old rhododendrons are sickly with a fungus. It makes no sense that they are currently building a fancy new Japanese tea house when the garden is in such disrepair 🤷‍♂️
Bill Y — Google review
Nice Japanese garden next to Hartley Castle. The best part is that it is free and easy to access.
S S — Google review
Compared to the other spots, this area is less maintained and the pond water is quite murky, so I wouldn’t particularly recommend it 😕💧

Esquimalt Lagoon

Lake
Esquimalt Lagoon is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, offering an easy trail with breathtaking views of the Strait of Juan De Fuca and the lagoon itself. The trail, located on the Coburg Peninsula along Ocean Boulevard, features beautiful sculptures and a serene atmosphere perfect for a leisurely walk. Visitors can also enjoy the beach, sea breeze, and clean facilities. During weekends in the summer, food trucks line the area while local bands perform.
The Esquimalt Lagoon is a coastal treasure in Colwood, BC, offering a peaceful and scenic retreat. Its mirror-like waters beautifully reflect the surrounding mountains, sky, and lush greenery, creating an idyllic setting for nature lovers. With the Juan de Fuca Strait stretching out towards the Olympic Mountains, the views are breathtaking, especially during sunrise and sunset when the sky is painted in soft, warm hues. The sandy spit that borders the lagoon provides a perfect place for relaxing walks, with driftwood scattered along the shore and a peaceful ambiance. Accessible 24 hours a day, the lagoon is a superb location for early-morning birdwatching or a leisurely evening walk. As a migratory bird sanctuary, it hosts a diverse array of birdlife, from majestic great blue herons and eagles to graceful swans and ducks, as well as seasonal visitors like sandpipers and kingfishers. Wildlife enthusiasts may also catch a glimpse of otters, seals, and occasionally deer. For the best views, a walk along the sand spit offers sweeping vistas of the lagoon and the ocean, while Ocean Boulevard provides continuous scenic views with convenient parking areas. Public washrooms are available near the lagoon's southern end, ensuring visitors' comfort. Whether you're there to enjoy the wildlife, admire the natural beauty, or take in the serene atmosphere, the Esquimalt Lagoon is a must-visit destination on Vancouver Island.

It's not every day that a submarine pops up outta the ocean. Hopefully, it's part of some type of war games or a training session. Coast guard came by fairly quickly and sat close by. About the park..Nice place to enjoy the surroundings, take in some fresh air as you walk. There are some nice views from here, and it looks enormous staring into the water. Even the bigger ships 🚢 look small out on the water. The other side is a lagoon with some wildlife using it as a source. We have seen fish and a couple of herons waiting to gobble them up. Parking can get tricky depending on what day and what time of day you arrive. Have seen plenty of people make the trek on bikes, too, so be mindful and share the road..

My favorite place to spend some quiet time. You can walk the entire beach in about 30 minutes (1 way). Ocean swimming is popular here.
Rachelnnud — Google review
The best beach on southern Vancouver Island. Go when the tide is going out so you can take off your shoes and walk the beach. Even when it's super busy the beach is so big you don't feel crowded. Lots of friendly pups come who love to greet passerbyers and occasionally the seals or cranes will stop by.
Sarah G — Google review
It's a wonderful ride! Lake on one side and ocean on the other. Excellent for a walk. There are beautiful sculptures along the way. Take the opportunity to look or simply enjoy the sand and sea breeze. In the summer, on weekends, many food trucks are parked there and there are also some performances by local bands. It's a "point" around here! It's always crowded! It was the scene of a scene from the series Maid. Oh! The bathrooms are very clean

Esquimalt Lagoon is such a peaceful spot to escape and enjoy nature. The mix of ocean views, sandy beach, and the calm lagoon on the other side makes it a beautiful balance of scenery. What makes it even more special are the driftwood art pieces scattered along the shore — creative, eye-catching, and perfect for photos. It’s a great place for a walk, whether you’re just out to clear your head, spend quiet time with friends, or simply watch the waves. I love how it offers both relaxation and inspiration in one visit. Definitely worth checking out if you’re around the area!

Esquimalt Lagoon is a gem! When the tide is out there is a long sandy beach perfect for walking, jogging, beachcombing, picnics, and building sand castles. It's a safe beach for children but alway keep your eye on kids around any water! The bird sanctuary on the opposite side is wonderful for spotting blue herons, swans, and other birds. The beach is never really crowded. Worth a visit on a sunny day or even during a stormy day! The view always changes!
