Silverton Hotel, located west of Broken Hill near the South Australian border, is a historic mining town known for its artistic community and as a popular setting for outback movies. Despite its dwindling population, the town boasts several art galleries, historic buildings, and a famous pub. Visitors can't miss the Mundi Mundi Lookout with its expansive desert views or exploring the Day Dream Mine.
Love the mozzarella sticks & Nachos. $18 Irish Coffee (Coffee w/- a nip of Bailey's & Jameson Whisky). Merch is expensive. Service awesome. With 3 Coaches a day visiting Silverton, eat at 11:30am.

Great place to have a cool drink and food. They also sell souvenirs & t-shirts. All day menu is great so you can eat at any time after the bakery is closed.
Jenni G — Google review
Great people and our burgers were so good. The egg was perfectly done, chips were good, but we were stalked by birds! Definitely don't feed them! Lol, literally it started with one, and before you know it we were surrounded - and we DIDN'T feed them. Good food, decent prices, and a talking cockatoo at the back near the toilets. Adorable. We aren't into Mad Max, but the other memorabilia around is cool. Worth the stop.
Victoria G — Google review
This place is certainly about the vibe. The service can be a little bit short as in a bit rough but it seems okay. I definitely want to come back here and check out all the decoration. History and memorabilia of all the famous people, TV shows and movies that have used this hotel. I think the food is okay but we only got chips this time.
Anthony G — Google review
We ordered seafood basket and grilled fish and vegies. Umph, grilled fish, hot chips good but vegies and seafood basket heated food. Our wines were $8 a glass which was good. Best thing was being out there at sunset as the flies went to bed, the camel ride came into town and the donkeys grazed down the road. The hotel was very dog friendly but not busy.
Robbie F — Google review
It was a pleasure to be welcomed by 4 Donkeys when we walked over to the pub for dinner, the ‘inside’ staff were very welcoming, the beer was cold and the food was a simple menu but well cooked and timely.
Jamie H — Google review
Quite the worst pub food I have ever been served. Bangers and mash, hard to stuff up but they did. In a sentence, set a low standard and failed to achieve it. Cheap thin sausages that appeared to have been tortured in a sandwich press. Gravy that was congealed like resin. This place runs on a memory, thats all it will be to me now. Over priced and over rated. A diehard mad max fan may find the sights of of interest, otherwise save your money, time and suspension.

Great place to visit. Highly recommend going there.

Silverton Heritage Walking Trail

1.0

Hiking area
The Silverton Heritage Walking Trail is a longer 2-hour walk that requires comfortable walking shoes and water. It covers the same sights as the town loop, excluding Penrose Park, and extends beyond the town to include several historic ruins, lookout points, the Umberumberka Mine, and the old rail cutting.
(Translated by Google) My girlfriend and I wanted to do a hike in Silverton, preferably one that ended at the Mundi Mundi lookout. When we arrived at this location, we found no path anywhere. In other words: this walking trail does not exist/only half exists. On our own initiative we started walking towards the lookout along the highway. Then at a random point we walked off the road into the 'desert' towards the lookout, as we did not want to walk all the way past the speeding cars looking back. When we had walked a bit on this path, we came across a sign from which we could see that we were on the heritage trail. However, this sign did not provide any instructions as to where the path would continue. Because we were stopped by a fence and it was not comfortable anyway, we walked back to the highway. From there we walked to the Mundi Mundi lookout point. This viewpoint was quite disappointing, it is actually no different from the rest of the area. Moreover, there are zero facilities: no bench, no toilet, nothing at all. It's a glorified parking lot. We were constantly plagued by flies (see photo) while walking. This had quite an influence on the experience. It could have something to do with the time of year. So if you want to go hiking in Silverton in April/May, be warned. To indicate how much these flies made us crazy: we took the road back to Silverton (just the same highway but in the other direction) but started running so that we would get back to the car sooner. In summary: the trail does not actually exist, but it certainly does not end at the Mundi Mundi lookout (which is also not worth visiting). Don't be fooled by this so-called walking route.

The Silverton Gaol and Historical Museum is a captivating destination that offers a glimpse into the town's vibrant mining past. Housed in a former prison, the museum showcases an array of exhibits that depict Silverton's early mining years. With artifacts spread across 18 rooms and cells, visitors can explore the region's history, including its transition to Broken Hill. Additionally, nearby attractions such as the Mad Max 2 Museum provide an alternative perspective on the area's recent heritage.
WOW was I mistaken, I would be in and out of this small museum in the matter of a few minutes, so so wrong. This is a huge museum covering the whole of the history of the town of Silverton, from the beginning of the mining, and showing all aspects of the whole town over the years. While we had limited time and rushed through in only a couple of hours, you could spend almost all day here. Please do not judge this book by it's cover, or its name!

Another great museum in Silverton, the Silverton Goal is a beautiful old building and had a very extensive collection of historical artefacts from the area. I had a wonderful chat with the caretaker who told me about some locations in the area where Mad Max 2 was filmed and that he and his wife were involved in the film, too.
Daniel C — Google review
Wasn't expecting such a huge amount of information and history when I walked in. Friendly and helpful staff. Allow some extra time for this sppt. A massive amount of town history on one place.
David E — Google review
I spent a good hour here today fully entertained and only left as I had the dog with me. There’s plenty to see, more than expected that’s for sure. 18 rooms of history both from the Gaol itself it also collections from the whole area. You can certainly get a feel of life in the ‘old times’ of Silverton and of the many mining exploits throughout the region. Everyone would find something of interest whether that’s family life or mining. Got to be worth a visit.

What a wonderful find in Silverton! We were a bit hesitant to go in at first but so glad we did! Pies and french pastries in the middle of the outback, like a mirage! Was such a lovely experience and would recommend to everybody to step inside if in the area.

I absolutely love the Silverton Bakery! It’s not just a great little country bakery — it’s honestly the best bakery I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting. If I lived closer, I’d be there every week without question. Sadly, I’m about 1,000 kilometres away, but that hasn’t stopped me from dreaming about it regularly. Their lamb pie is hands-down the best pie I’ve ever eaten — no exaggeration. The filling is rich and savoury with beautifully tender lamb, and there’s a subtle but perfect hint of mint and rosemary that takes it to a whole new level. It’s a flavour combination that works incredibly well and gives the pie a bit of an elevated, gourmet feel while still being hearty and comforting. The cinnamon buns are another standout. They’re soft, perfectly spiced, and topped with a generous layer of cream cheese icing that’s not too sweet — just right. It’s one of those treats you eat slowly just to savour every bite. Everything here feels like it’s made with genuine care and passion. It’s a charming spot in a beautiful part of the world, and absolutely worth the detour if you’re anywhere near Silverton. I’ll definitely be back the next time I’m in the area.

Myself and my partner stopped into Silverton bakery. OMG!! The best curry chicken pie with chips and gravy and lamb pie with chips and gravy and a cheeky custard tart and apple crumble to finish it off. Will definitely be coming back again. 10/10

OMG - I just the most amazing cinnamon scroll, hot out of the oven. As good as the ones I used to get in Canada. Serviced by the most lovely (?)French /French Canadian woman. Sausage roll was excellent. Super clean and worth every bump in the road to get there. What a highlight! I would head back just to have morning tea there again. Resident donkeys arrived as we left.

The Mad Max 2 Museum, located around 20 minutes from Broken Hill in the town of Silverton, is a must-visit for movie enthusiasts. This privately owned museum showcases an extensive collection of costumes, photos, memorabilia, and original vehicles from the post-apocalyptic film series. The owner, a dedicated fan who relocated from the UK to run the museum, has assembled an impressive array of items related to Mad Max 2.
Unreal Experience – A Must for Mad Max Fans If you're heading to Silverton, the Mad Max Museum is an absolute must. Whether you're a die-hard fan or just curious about Aussie film history, this place delivers. The collection is huge – original costumes, vehicles, props, and rare behind-the-scenes photos. You can feel the passion and dedication that went into creating this space. Adrian and Linda, the owners, are legends. Their love for Mad Max and Silverton is infectious. Adrian knows everything about the films and shares stories that make you feel like you’re part of the production crew. Linda is super warm and welcoming – it feels like visiting old friends. There are areas where photography isn’t allowed, but you’ll still get epic shots outside with some of the original vehicles, including pieces from Razorback and of course Mad Max 2. Just a heads up – check the opening hours before you come out, as it can be a bit unpredictable. After the museum, pop into the local bakery – seriously, amazing food. Silverton surprised me in the best way – it’s a little town packed with big stories. — Alex from Perth
