Nizwa Fort, a 17th-century fortress built over 12 years under Sultan Bin Saif Al Yaruba's rule, features an impressive round tower and cannons at the entrance. The fort offers panoramic views of date plantations and the Hajar Mountains. As the historical capital of Oman, Nizwa was a center for trade and culture, attracting writers, poets, scientists, and religious leaders.
A great historical place to visit. I bought the ticket and visited the fort in the morning, but it was possible to return in the afternoon to watch the sunset with the same ticket. Really beautiful!
Emmyli S — Google review
Nizwa Fort is a significant historical landmark that attracts many tourists eager to explore its rich history and impressive architecture. The nearby souq area is just a short walk away and is definitely worth visiting for its traditional shops, local crafts, and vibrant atmosphere. While the entry fee is slightly higher than expected, the experience of exploring the fort and its surroundings makes it well worth it.
Laiju L — Google review
Nice place to go. It’s possible to arrive in the morning and leave in the evening. Deep inside, I wished to see something more like it’s original - more raw, maybe - but the place is rebuilt. Make sure to eat the crepe there. Fort and market are in the same place, so don’t worry. about transport between them. The market is very nice. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to go to the real ruins.
Lorena M — Google review
Nizwa Fort is one of the many forts in Oman, but definitely one of the prettiest. The views and photo opportunities here are stunning, and the atmosphere is incredible. Walking around in the heat can be challenging, but there are plenty of shady spots to take a break. Don’t forget to try the food from Mrs. Ruqiya - it’s a delicious bonus to the visit!
Ihar B — Google review
The staff are very friendly. There are a few spots which have air conditioning but the rest is hot. We went in the afternoon to avoid the crowds and it was nice to have the fort almost to yourself. Might be good to get a tour guide if you’re interested in the history.

Nizwa is a must-visit! Rich in history and culture, with a beautiful fort and lively souq. Great place to explore Omani heritage and enjoy local food and crafts.
Crystal O — Google review
The fort is a remarkable historic site and one of Oman’s most visited landmarks. Built in the 1650s by Imam Sultan Bin Saif Al Ya’rubi, with foundations dating back to the 12th century, the fort beautifully showcases Omani architectural skill and military ingenuity. The massive round tower 30 meters high and 36 meters wide stands as the fort’s centerpiece, featuring thick defensive walls, narrow staircases, hidden shafts, and even “murder holes” once used to defend against intruders. Inside, the maze of rooms, terraces, and passageways offers a vivid sense of what life was like centuries ago. The fort’s history, from its use as an administrative center to its clever defensive systems like underground water streams and storage cellars, makes it an educational and memorable visit. It can get quite busy, especially on weekends, and more interactive exhibits or guides would make the experience even better but overall, it’s a must see for anyone visiting Nizwa.
Abdulkarim A — Google review
Pretty nice tourist attraction, I love that Oman stick to their traditions and the government really cares about preserving their culture and heritage. I had lots of fun looking around the castle and I also visited the Souq Nizwa.

Nizwa Souq is a vibrant marketplace in Nizwa, Oman, offering an immersive experience into the local culture. The souq features dedicated sections for various goods such as fruits, vegetables, meats, and fish. Additionally, it is known for its exquisite handicrafts and silver jewelry, including the renowned silver khanjar. Visitors can explore traditional crafts and savor Omani cuisine while taking in the bustling atmosphere of the market.
A beautifully restored heritage market that offers an authentic glimpse into Omani culture, craftsmanship, and history. Well worth the trip from Muscat. --- ✅ Positive Aspects: • Historic charm: Located within a walled and renovated area, the souq preserves the essence of traditional Omani architecture and atmosphere. • Handicrafts and heritage goods: A central hub for silverware, pottery, spices, textiles, and other artisanal products that reflect the region’s cultural identity. • Cultural immersion: Ideal for travelers seeking a deeper connection with Oman’s past and present through local interactions and authentic shopping. • Nearby attractions: Just steps away from Nizwa Fort and other historical landmarks, making it a rich cultural stop. • Accessible from Muscat: About 1.5 hours by car, making it a feasible and rewarding day trip.

Visiting Nizwa Souq was an absolutely delightful experience! I was so happy the moment I stepped in — the entire place is full of vibrancy, color, and authentic Omani culture. From the lively atmosphere to the friendly local vendors, everything beautifully reflects the heart of Oman. The souvenirs are truly special — handmade crafts, silver jewelry, pottery, and traditional Omani goods that carry the essence of this country’s heritage. Every corner tells a story, and the scent of spices, frankincense, and Arabic coffee makes the experience even more memorable. If you want to feel the real Oman, Nizwa Souq is the place to be — a perfect blend of tradition, warmth, and timeless charm. 🌿🇴🇲✨
RAHUL N — Google review
Nizwa Central Souq is an absolutely beautiful place, perfect for photos and experiencing something unique. However, as a traditional souq, I didn’t quite feel the usual lively vibe. Perhaps it was the heat, or maybe the rules, but no one really approached you. On one hand, it’s nice to stroll without being bothered, but even when I tried to buy something, it felt like no one really cared. Still, it’s worth visiting for its beauty and atmosphere.
Ihar B — Google review
Nizwa Central Souq and its surrounding area are the main reasons I visited Nizwa, traveling so many kilometers from Muscat. The market area has a timeless charm, with narrow lanes, traditional shops, and local crafts that feel like stepping into an Aladdin-era setting. The famous Nizwa Fort is also very close, adding to the historical and cultural experience. Don’t miss trying the local Halwa—it’s famous for being incredibly tasty!
Laiju L — Google review
A very full souq (traditional market) with something for everyone. The inner souq has a wide spread of aromatic coffee and dates, authentic Omani frankincense and myrrh, soaps, halawa sweets, local veggies and more. The outside soups are where you go to find pottery, jewelry and the emblematic Omani knifes (khanjar) along with rare guns like vintage Martini Henry rifles. One shop even has a collection display (not for intl sale) of ancient rhino hide buckler style shields. Come to the Nizwa souq if you want to get all your souvenir shopping done in one go, and see some interesting cultural pieces along the way.
Daniel S — Google review
Nizwa Central Market is a beautifully restored heritage site that truly captures the heart of Omani culture, craftsmanship, and history. Surrounded by old fort walls and traditional architecture, the market offers a charming mix of sights, sounds, and colors. Visitors can explore shops filled with handmade silver jewelry, pottery, frankincense, spices, and textiles, each reflecting Oman’s rich heritage and local artistry. The atmosphere feels both historic and lively, with friendly vendors and authentic Omani hospitality everywhere you turn. Located just beside the iconic Nizwa Fort, it’s an ideal spot for travelers who want to experience authentic Oman beyond the modern cities. Only about 1.5 hours from Muscat, this market makes for a perfect and rewarding cultural day trip.

Very beautiful and well maintained place in Nizwa! Definitely worth the visit and also a good place to buy pure oils and taste the delicious 100% fresh juice of pomegranate.

A glimpse of an Omani culture with the restored market/Souq. Come early to see the different auctions and the main sections (vegetables, fish, sweets etc ... And Friday the sheep market - a must see!)

Shopping mall
Nizwa Grand Mall is the largest shopping destination in Nizwa, and one of the biggest in Oman. With over 80 shops offering a mix of local and international brands, it's a paradise for shopaholics. The mall also features an ice skating rink, bowling area, exhibition spaces, cafes, restaurants, and a fun city. It's a modern addition to the ancient city of Nizwa.
Nizwa Grand Mall is the best shopping and entertainment destination in Nizwa. The mall is spacious, clean, and well-organized, offering a wide variety of shops—from fashion and electronics to groceries at Lulu Hypermarket. It’s great for finding both local and international brands under one roof. The dining options are diverse, with places like Chicking and Chilli House serving tasty meals, plus a convenient food court for quick bites. For entertainment, the mall features fun activities like an ice skating rink, bowling alley, a modern cinema, and a dedicated kids’ play zone, making it perfect for families and friends. The location is easily accessible with ample parking, and the mall is open daily from morning till night, which is very convenient. Overall, Nizwa Grand Mall provides a comfortable and enjoyable experience whether you want to shop, eat, or have fun. Highly recommended for visitors and locals alike!

Spacious layout with a variety of stores, restaurants, and a large Lulu Hypermarket. Clean, family-friendly, and centrally located. Ample parking space. However, car parking shade could be improved, especially in the hotter months.

Nizwa Mall is a clean and aesthetically pleasing place to visit. It’s never too crowded, which makes shopping and walking around quite relaxing. The mall is well-maintained with a calm ambiance and modern design. While the food options are a bit limited, the overall experience is peaceful and enjoyable.
RAHUL N — Google review
13.07.2025 went there for a walk. small in size and has little options. seemes it still has some ooen places for rent but not been occupied yet the design of the mall is nice. having an open area can utlised for events which is good. but the way it has been designed for reaching from center then you need to go to branch, and getting back to center to get back to other branch, is not a good option in my opinion plenty of parking
Ahmed A — Google review
A very good super market, everything available here, grocery, electronics, electrical, famous fast food brands and medicines everything. You may find indoor games like billiards, snooker, bowling etc. here. Washroom were super clean like all over Oman. A amazing place for shopping with vast parking area
Jahangir B — Google review
Nice place for shopping, and there is an ice skiing field in the mall along with other fun activities that can be done here for young adults. You can find Carrefour for grocery shopping. The restaurants options are relatively good with some great cafe's options. The toilets are kept mostly clean, but toilet seats are a bit dirty due to people standing on them with their shoes rather than sitting.

Museum
History is being told in the most profound way. Starting from the epic design of the building, so dynamic inside out. What I really admire is how easy to go around, the circulation is simple and unique. Every thing is in one large space that is design in an interactive manner. Some with music others with eye catching large images. All information that has been provided is great and very interesting. But I think there is a lack of references. A library would have been a great source of information and some collections. I just wonder why the British Museum has more authenticatated documents, letters and other Omani artifact than this Museum? Once your are done with the main display area you can have a snake from the cafe which is really nice and open up to a souvenir shop. You have to spend time admiring the court yard and the different parts of the Museum.
Muna A — Google review
The building is beautiful, but the museum exhibits are not creative at all and clearly are gathered and planned way back in 2015 when the project was initially announced. The employees are really nice and helpful. I’ve seen museums in nearby countries that are way creative and fun. And the art section is too disappointing not planned well and looks like a last minute thing, even the lights were not on there. I’m really disappointed.
Lamyaa A — Google review
A breathtaking journey through Oman’s history and progress! Visiting the Oman Across Ages Museum in Manah was one of the most memorable cultural experiences I’ve ever had in Oman. The museum is truly world-class — from its magnificent architecture inspired by the Al Hajar Mountains to the thoughtfully designed exhibitions that tell the story of Oman’s past, present, and future. As soon as you enter, you’re welcomed into a space that combines tradition with technology. The exhibits beautifully trace Oman’s journey from prehistoric times to the modern renaissance led by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. The use of interactive screens, digital projections, and immersive storytelling makes it engaging for both adults and children. You don’t just see history — you experience it. The museum’s scale is impressive, with vast halls dedicated to different eras and achievements — from ancient tools and maritime trade to scientific innovations and national development. The attention to detail in every display shows the passion and pride Oman has for its heritage. The staff were polite and helpful, and the facilities — including rest areas, café, and parking — were excellent. The place is spotless, well-maintained, and designed to offer a comfortable visit even if you spend several hours exploring. It’s located about 20 minutes from Nizwa and around 1 hour 40 minutes from Muscat, but the drive is totally worth it. I’d recommend planning at least 3 hours to truly enjoy everything the museum offers. Overall, this museum is not just a tourist spot — it’s an inspiring symbol of Oman’s rich culture, unity, and vision for the future. A must-visit destination for anyone visiting the Sultanate. 🕰️ Best time to visit: Morning or early afternoon 💡 Tip: Check the opening hours (especially Fridays) and bring a camera — every corner is stunning!
Ramiz O — Google review
The Museum is a magnificent celebration of the Sultanate’s history, culture, and progress a place where the past and future meet through art, architecture, and technology. Architecturally inspired by the Al Hajar mountains, it beautifully blends Omani heritage with modern design and sustainable features. Inside, the journey is captivating through the History Gallery, which traces Oman’s story from prehistoric settlements and the civilisation of Magan to the maritime era, aflaj irrigation systems, and the dynasties of Al Ya’aruba and Al Busaidi. The Renaissance Gallery highlights the nation’s transformation since the 1970s, showcasing Oman’s social, economic, environmental, and technological progress while preserving its authentic identity. With more than 310 video exhibits, 1,200 interactive screens, and an outstanding Knowledge Centre that houses over 46,000 titles in the Husn Al Shumookh Library, the museum offers a deeply educational and immersive experience for all ages. Recognised internationally, the museum has won the 2024 Prix Versailles Special Prize for an Exterior and the 2025 International Chapter Award for Public Architecture by the Australian Institute of Architects, in addition to a nomination for the Versailles International Prize for Architecture & Design. A visit here is both inspiring and humbling, a true tribute to Oman’s enduring spirit.
Abdulkarim A — Google review
Had a great experience looking into How Oman evolved from ice age to current stage. The role of Oman politically, geographically was very well explained. Oman visionary to be future ready was well presented. Interactive demos for kids makes it more engaging and entertaining

You get here 2 different but amazing topics to see: the historical story and journey of Oman. Well presented with modern visualizations! And the entire building itself! That alone makes it worth visiting this place! Overall - must see!

Tamrah Restaurant & Cafe in Nizwa offers a delightful dining experience with its beautiful views over the city and cozy, traditional decor that immerses you in Omani culture. The menu takes you on a culinary journey through the flavors of Oman, featuring expertly prepared dishes using aromatic spices and fresh ingredients. On the rooftop, enjoy stunning views of Nizwa Fort and Souq while savoring a variety of delicious dishes served with excellent service.
What a great delight it was to break the fast during Ramadan at Tamrah! The atmosphere was amazing, (especially the view) the menu they put together for everyone was exceptional and the staff running the whole restaurant was just incredible, especially Rea!!! I’m vegetarian and they were accommodating me throughout the whole night! Food was great! Just too much! ☺️…And although we were not able to put any more food in us and said “no” to dessert, they wrapped up some specialities and gave us a take home bag with all sorts of goodies to bring home! Wow! Incredible! Side note: Tamrah is on the third floor! Don’t wait outside by the date shop! Just go to the third floor!

Came here after a long day traveling — the service was wonderful. Views is directly to the fort and masjid which is lovely 🥰 The host gave us seats right away and took to us very kindly and shared recommendations to the menu. We ordered their house salad / absolutely wonderful - mixed of savory and sweet and really hit the spot. We also got the chicken tawook and shuwa which were both lovely and flavorful. Their dessert menu was exceptional as well. Definitely recommend coming here for a nice quiet evening.

When in Nizwa, make sure to visit Al Aqur Traditional Restaurant, located conveniently next to the souq and a short walk from the fort. The service is exceptional and efficient, offering authentic and flavorful dishes with generous portions. The restaurant has been recently improved, providing a pleasant dining experience. Whether you prefer indoor seating with air conditioning or the rooftop area, you can enjoy freshly made food served by English-speaking and friendly staff.
Nice restaurant with lots of seating. It had a bit of a weird smell when we went up to the terrace, but the smell was soon replaced by a great jasmine smell. Food is delicious and smells delicious. If you want to get the Family mix grill for 18 real, I recommend instead getting the medium mix grill or the large for like half the price for pretty much the same stuff. Really nice Orsia(chicken porridge, really good). Plain desserts though. I will recommend this place.
Akira W — Google review
Unfortunately, we had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. The food was served completely cold, the meat was low quality and tasteless, and the mini fries were cold, flavourless, and poorly prepared. What we received looked nothing like the photos shown on the menu, which was really frustrating. According to consumer protection laws in Oman, if a product or service doesn’t match what’s advertised, customers have the right to cancel the order and request a refund — which we did. I absolutely do not recommend this place. If you’re looking for quality, honesty, and respect as a customer, it’s best to go somewhere else.

Food was delicious, some of the grill was a bit burnt and soup could have been hotter. I liked it in general, you can try it for a good middle eastern cuisine. The architecture is nice, atmosphere is beautiful with the balcony. Sound might be a bit loud because of echoing.

We recently returned to Dubai from Salalah and decided to take a detour through Nizwa specifically to try the famous Shuwa (Shua) rice and it was absolutely worth it! We picked up both the chicken and mutton versions, and each one was incredibly flavorful and tender. We also tried their Mishk, and it deserves a special mention. The staff were friendly and accommodating, and the food was served fresh and hot. If you're passing through Nizwa this place is a must-try for an authentic Omani culinary experience. Highly recommended!

If you're in Nizwa and looking for a delightful dining experience, Classic Restaurant is definitely worth a visit. This charming eatery offers a variety of Indian dishes that cater to diverse palates, making it an ideal spot for those craving authentic flavors. The Chicken Biriyani stands out as a budget-friendly option with tender chicken and well-cooked rice, though some may find it could use a bit more flavor.
One of the best places to satisfy your Indian cravings! Their buttered chicken masala is the best. I liked the dosa masala too, perfect for breakfast.

Thought of trying Mangalore style food for lunch. Ordered chicken sukka and dosa as only that was available, other than fish meals. Dosa was good, but sukka isnt of mangalore style. Quantity looked good but it was filled with tomato and onion paste. Visit 1: Extremely slow service for breakfast on our way to Jebel Shams. Unattentive waiters. No plan to try more items unless I maybe pre-order.

Decent Experience at Classic Restaurant, Nizwa I recently dined at Classic Restaurant in Nizwa and tried their Chicken Biriyani. The experience was quite average in terms of taste, but considering the price, it is a good budget-friendly option. The Chicken Biriyani was decent, with well-cooked rice and tender chicken pieces, though it lacked a bit of the rich flavor I was hoping for. However, for the price, it offers good value and is a satisfying meal. The ambiance of the restaurant was simple and comfortable, making it a nice place for a casual meal. The staff were friendly and provided good service throughout my visit. Cleanliness and hygiene standards were maintained, which is always appreciated. Overall, Classic Restaurant is a solid choice if you’re looking for a budget-friendly place to enjoy a meal in Nizwa. While the Chicken Biriyani was average, the reasonable prices make it worth a visit.
