Puerto Rio Tranquilo in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Puerto Rio Tranquilo, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Puerto Río Tranquilo is best known as the gateway to the Marble Caves, striking blue-white rock formations that you can visit by boat or kayak on General Carrera Lake. The village sits along the scenic Carretera Austral, making it a popular stop for road trips through Chilean Patagonia. From here, travelers can join excursions to the Exploradores Glacier and viewpoints over the Northern Patagonian Ice Field. The area appeals mainly to outdoor enthusiasts seeking hiking, boating, and dramatic mountain-and-lake landscapes in a relatively remote setting.
With favorites like Capillas de Mármol, Exploradores Park, and Restaurant Cerveceria Rio Tranquilo, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Restaurant Cerveceria Rio Tranquilo and Restaurante Tursítico Pia so you can get the best taste of Puerto Rio Tranquilo while you’re here. The Marble Caves, also known as the Marble Chapel, are a stunning natural wonder located on the shores of General Carrera Lake in South America. These unique cave formations have been sculpted by water erosion over an estimated 15,000 years and showcase mesmerizing patterns of vibrant blue and white marble.
Did a tour there.. Did the full marble tour and it was great.... Really amazing views.
Marcela R — Google review
The Marble Caves of Chile are truly one of nature’s most breathtaking masterpieces! Located on the stunning turquoise waters of General Carrera Lake, these caves are a hidden gem that feels almost otherworldly. The swirling patterns of blue, white, and gray marble, shaped over thousands of years by water and wind, create a mesmerizing, dreamlike experience. Taking a small boat or kayak through the caves is unforgettable — as the light shifts throughout the day, the colors of the water reflect beautifully off the smooth stone walls, turning the whole place into a living piece of art. It’s quiet, peaceful, and awe-inspiring — the kind of place that makes you feel deeply connected to nature. The journey to get there is an adventure in itself, but absolutely worth it. Once you see the Marble Caves up close, you realize photos can’t possibly capture their magic. 📍 Travel Tip: Visit on a sunny day — the sunlight transforms the lake into shades of turquoise and sapphire, making the caves glow from within.
Trudy S — Google review
Catedral de Mármol (Marble Cathedral) in Chile’s Patagonia is a mesmerizing natural wonder sculpted by wind and water over centuries. The swirling blue and white marble formations, reflected in the turquoise waters of Lake General Carrera, create a surreal, dreamlike atmosphere. Best explored by small boat or kayak, the caves offer an intimate connection with nature’s artistry. Remote but worth the journey, this site is a highlight of Chile’s wild and pristine beauty.
Dani B — Google review
An absolutely stunning spot! I recommend renting a kayak and going on a tour to learn about the caves and the local area.
Clara W — Google review
Nice place, I would say, based on my experience, there’s quite much hype about this place but it is a good one..but it’s not about the best you can do in the Patagonian region…in my next visit I’ll probably skip it
Davide C — Google review
The cave is stunning and truly unique. I recommend booking a 3-hour kayak tour, through which you can get up close, and get inside the tunnel. Bear in mind though sometimes the port may be closed due to high wind, so be patient. The weather changes quickly here.
Lei R — Google review
I thought the marble caves would be quite touristy and commercial, but I was happily mistaken! It is indeed incredible. I highly recommend doing it with a kayak, as you can get closer and do it more slowly. It is not so tiring and the agencies are super helpful. Seek a tour in Rio Tranquilo.
Rodrigo K — Google review
We did the kayaking tour through the caves and it was incredible! We got to see the sunrise from the mountains and enjoy our morning on the water. Be careful because it gets really windy on the lake and then all the powerboats come to show the tourists the caves. I recommend using a kayak angency and going in the morning before the weather gets really bad.

The area boasts crystal clear rivers, waterfalls, natural terraces, and the breathtaking Leones lake and glacier. Visitors can expect a diverse and entertaining group with experienced guides providing insightful commentary throughout the journey. We had a great time kayaking with Jorge to the Marble caves, great guide and gear was well maintained. 7am is the perfect time, make sure to dress well, since it is really cold.

Capillas de Mármol, located near Puerto Rio Tranquilo, is a majestic and unique natural wonder that requires some effort to reach. Visitors are advised to dress warmly in layers and wear a hat for the boat tour. The erosion of the rock by water over the years has created stunning formations, complemented by the impressive blue color of the water.
This is such a beautiful natural wonder that must be seen when in Rio Tranquillo - phobia don't do it justice, it must be seen in real life to fully appreciate. We are so grateful to Panchito, from Panchito Full Marmol tours and his guide Nelson for such a great tour, really taking their tike to allow us to appreciate this area and their local knowledge. Thank you 😊
Alethea M — Google review
Indeed the nature around there is quite beautiful. Years of erosion of the rock due to water created amazing forms. The colour of the water is an impressive blue. We took a tour from Porto Tranquilo. We paid 10000ARS per person for one hour on the boat, which I found quite expensive. It seems that all the tourist agencies charge the same. The boats are for about 15 people each. Everyone has to wear a floating jackets for safety reasons.

Ok-ish. A couple of nice pictures can be taken. Rio Tranquilo by itself is simply ugly : steel plate cabanas and parking lot directly on the lake...

Destino Patagonia offers tours starting from the stunning Camino a Exploradores in Puerto Rio Tranquilo. Visitors can enjoy a day at the San Rafael glacier with attentive boat crew providing ample snacks and meals on board. The tour includes over two hours at the glacier terminus, offering breathtaking views and even sightings of napping leopard seals on glacial ice.
I have done the 2 day tour (Aventura Osada). Everything was perfect. The 1st day we hiked to the Mirador and then we went to the kayak close to the glacier. The 2nd day I'm joining for the boat tour to the glacier before coming back to the city. The tents and the food were nice. I recommend doing this tour with the agency

Cannot say enough good things about Tomas and Edguardo. They were incredibly warm and receptive upon our arrival, taking special care to explain things to us as we were the only English speakers on the tour. While the boat is small they do their best to make everyone comfortable and its small size allows it to navigate to areas unreachable by other boats including right next to the glacier. Upon our arrival to the glacier we were welcomed to the top deck where we enjoyed stunning views. Soon we were offered drinks and toasted life and the glacier. They joked, explained nuances of local wildlife and curated an incredible atmosphere for all. After enjoying a delicious lunch we raised our glasses for a final time saying goodbye to the glacier as Edguardo skillfully picked his way through the ice fields. As we returned his sharp eye caught sea lions and dolphins. Each time he slowed the boat alerted passengers and skillfully maneuvered to give us all the best view. As we departed we were given a final treat, sweet bread and a friendly smile saw us off to our next adventure. Don’t miss this gem of an experience if you are in the area!! Would recommend to anyone!

Took a tour to San Rafael Lagoon with this company and had a wonderful time. The staff on the boat were wonderful. The food was tasty and the views were amazing. Would highly recommend using this company.
Zvi S — Google review
Excursion to Laguna San Rafael. The glacier is stunning, and the captain and assistant, capable and very helpful. It would be a five-star review were it not for the boat—cramped, short-ceilinged, claustrophobic and with poor visibility. Why pay first world prices for third world equipment? So many of us male passangers hit our head during the trip, it was both comical and painful (to the owner who likes to make excuses, beware: a lawsuit from a seriously injured passenger could terminate your business). Once you get to the glacier, there is no space to stay outside. The boat is just too small and the going, back and forth, very rough. A very uncomfortable and claustrophobic outing. Not recommended at all.
Guido S — Google review
We had a great time with Valentina and Eduardo, they will do everything to make you have a great experience! The glacier and the way there are amazing, really recommended!
Sietse H — Google review
AMAZING! Even though the excursion is expensive its worth every penny! First of all the people running the business were super cool young and love nature and ecology. So thumbs up for this and they deserve lots of support. Second the trip and the views of the glacier! Omg! One should experience to understand! The trip was magical and the highlight of our journey to chile! Higly reccomended!

My girlfriend and I had an amazing experience with Destino Patagonia. We really enjoyed our 2 days 1 night trip at Glacier San Rafael and would recommend it to anybody at any age. The staff of both the hike and boat experiences spoke a very good english, tried to make the trip special and accomodate any requests! Best, Massimo
Massimo G — Google review
We had an amazing day at the San Rafael glacier thanks to Destino Patagonia. The boat crew kept us well-fed with plenty of snacks and two meals on board. We stayed at the terminus of the glacier for over two hours to enjoy the view and even saw leopard seals napping on glacial ice on our way back! My only complaint would be the transportation to and from the boat dock. We had a very full passenger van that was not comfortable for the 2+ hour ride there and back on a pothole-filled gravel road. I was literally dreading the return ride back to Puerto Rio Tranquilo. This company should really invest in a larger sprinter van to make their guests more comfortable, especially for the price of the tour.

Exploradores Park, an ecological reserve, offers the awe-inspiring opportunity to traverse a glacier. This unique experience should not be missed if it is within your means. The guide, located in Puerto Tranquilo, ensures a safe and enjoyable journey. The breathtaking views of the glacial landscape make it truly magnificent. However, it is important to acknowledge the environmental impact caused by human activity in these areas.
I can very much recommend the hiking trails from conaf station. You can come by yourselves, buy the entrance ticket (11000 CLP for foreigners) at the conaf station and either go for a short hike(1hr) or do a beautiful 4hr hike to two view points (can recommend). As of Oct'24 this was a fantastic hike.

if i'm honest the place have a lovely view but is too sad walk on the iceberg all day knowing that the slaughter area causes a greater impact to the iceberger . if you go there please take your trash and stay on the trail
Joaquín L — Google review
Magical place. I truly hope that you are fortunate enough to visit this park one day. The staff’s love for the land is apparent- the trails are short yet well-maintained and signage provides clear/concise information on what is around you. If you get the chance, take the time to chat with the owner. I am incredibly grateful to have done so and learned more about the history of the park, the nature within, and his vision for the place. HIGHLY recommend devoting at least a half-day to visit (accounting for travel to/from Puerto Río Tranquilo).

(Translated by Google) People, be careful when driving to this point, 300 meters before the entrance to this park, there is an entrance to another paid trail and many cars stop there and don’t get to this place, thinking that they have already arrived, and this is a big mistake, since there are no such wonderful viewing platforms on the glacier and the price is much more expensive. Here, for 7,000 pesos, you are offered 2 excellent routes to glacier viewing platforms. On the way to the viewpoints you will see a lot of local flora, all plants are labeled. This is a great and inexpensive route. For those over 60, the price is 4,000 pesos, even if you are a foreigner. I highly recommend it. Car parking is not right next to the road, as in the previous place, but a little, about 5 meters to the right of the road and it is marked plates with numbers for each car.

Nestled in the charming town of Puerto Rio Tranquilo, Restaurant Cerveceria Rio Tranquilo is a delightful gem that offers an inviting atmosphere for both locals and travelers. This spot is perfect for those looking to unwind with a refreshing craft beer or indulge in delicious pizza after a day of exploring. The thin-crust pizzas are particularly noteworthy, boasting homemade dough that elevates each bite—whether you opt for the four-cheese delight or a fresh vegetarian option.
I absolutely loved this place! The people were very pleasant and knowledgeable about the area and the beer was great! I also had a gin and tonic made from local ingredients, it was very good. In a small town with some great dining options, this place really stands out. I hope to return someday very soon.

Be ready to wait for seating if it is a busy day, but if not, then this place a perfect spot to take a break from the wind and have a beer or pizza. The servers were quick to our service and had good suggestions for our questions. The beer list is small but very tasty for the local craft. Pizzas looked big and tasty but we were only there for the beer. About 4000$ pesos for a drink, which is not a bad price at all. We enjoyed this local spot a lot.

We were craving for pizza so much and here we found ones we like most: thin and crunchy! We took the four cheeses and the vegetarian and both very tasty (although expensive). With some American Pale Ale in the sun on their terrace we had a very good lunch! Also nice vibes and music! And friendly staff.

Ruedas y Ríos is a restaurant located in Puerto Rio Tranquilo, Chile, offering a delightful dining experience. It is known for its delicious food, particularly their burgers, and an extensive selection of craft beers. The staff is friendly and attentive, providing quick service. Visitors have praised the flavorful dishes such as a spicy stew with salmon and beef. The lively atmosphere and affordable, delectable burgers make it a popular spot for both small and large groups.
This place may have the best burgers in all of Chile. If you like watts, the natural juice will blow your mind. The service was amazing and I would highly recommend this restaurant to any passing traveler.

Great little restaurant in Puerto Tranquillo, I visited there twice during my visit. One visit I got a hamburger which was definitely good but not exceptional; on my first visit however I got a spicy, meat stew type dish. It contained salmon and beef, and although it was a bit spicy for my sensitive palette, it was outstanding, very tasty. I wish I had recorded the name of the dish but I did say least capture a picture which I have included.

Good burgers and beer. The most memorable thing is the music volume though. I have ate here multiple times over a year and every time I have downloaded sound meters because I have been so amazed how loud its been. The smokey mayo sauce is great also.
