Fort Morgan State Historic Site, located at Alabama's beaches, offers a deep dive into its 19th-century military history and Civil War significance. The site is meticulously restored and provides tours and displays spanning different timelines. Visitors can visualize the historical events that unfolded within the fort's walls. While exploring the well-preserved structure, guests can appreciate the eerie yet fascinating atmosphere of this significant landmark. The site features steep stairs but offers great photo opportunities for those willing to make the effort.
Fort Morgan was a great experience for the whole family—even our 3-year-old had a blast! There’s so much history to explore at your own pace, and the architecture is incredible, still standing strong since the 1800s. Parking was easy, and while the museum was just okay, the real highlight was wandering through the fort itself—climbing staircases, peeking through cannon ports, and taking in the views. They offered a military discount, which we appreciated, but even without it, tickets were very reasonable. A great mix of history, adventure, and scenery—highly recommend for all ages!

Really interesting historic fort and surrounding beach area. The Fort Morgan State Historic Site is very well preserved and includes history from the late 1700s up until World War II. There is a small museum and gift shop and interesting outlying artillery batteries as well. Many trails to walk and enjoy outside. Wouldn't recommend for individuals with mobility issues or wheelchairs as there are many inclines, steep stairs, and uneven areas.

We had an amazing time. We picked this because my son loves history. We had such a great time. It was really incredible to see all the history. The buildings are well kept and you can tell alot of work goes into the up keep. My kids loved the place!
Kebrina H — Google review
Neat place to visit especially with kids that can run up and down the hills and beach and climb the stairs! I didn't go in this year, but rode my bike to the edge each day. The pier is a cool place to look out and see all types of boats and ships and watch people fish. You'll see pelicans and dolphins, too. You can walk the beach all around, lots of driftwood and other things wash up here. Fishing is great - where the salt and fresh water meet. There's a museum on the fort grounds that has looks of interesting information about the fort and the area. Lots of places to stop on your way into the fort, beach accesses, wildlife refuges, and birding trails.

Fort Morgan was such an interesting and fun experience—especially if you're a history buff! It's actually much bigger than it looks at first glance, with tons of hidden corners and rich historical details to explore. There’s so much to take in, and it really gives you a feel for what life was like back then. Be sure to wear comfy shoes because there’s a lot of walking and some stair climbing if you want to get the full experience. Bonus: Fort Morgan is known as one of the most haunted places in Alabama, so if you’re up for a little thrill, try visiting later in the afternoon for that spooky vibe. Definitely loved this place and highly recommend it!

Love the historical value, especially since I teach about unit about it in Second Grade. Just wish there had been more older or original content left in the fort it's self to look at, even in a restricted area, like at Fort Gaines across the way. Also, saddened to see the trash thrown around and just left there in some.of the restricted areas. Please. . If your not interested in history, at least be respectful of the site itself. ✌️💕

Wow! This is a very interesting place to visit. We went when the morning temp was approaching triple digits. It was sticky HOT! As we walked around, the very well maintained fort, we were able to appreciate the men who put on the uniforms to defend this beautiful country we live in. The fort itself is actually quite beautiful! The arched entryways are stunning.

Very cool day trip. Wish there were more detail signage. Amazing to see the construction & detail. The beach was fantastic also, wish we brought umbrella, chairs & cooler! It's very clean & with very few people on it.

Mobile Bay Ferry - Fort Morgan Landing

4.7
(1570)
Ferry service
The Mobile Bay Ferry, also known as the Dauphin Island Ferry, operates between Dauphin Island and Fort Morgan. The 30-minute ride costs $6 round-trip per person, with additional charges for vehicles. It's a convenient alternative to driving around Mobile Bay, but vehicle fees can add up. The ferry runs multiple times daily, but it's important to arrive early to secure a spot.
Great to experience. They ferry your car and it’s a cool experience. There are bathrooms and information areas but overall you can look around the general area while waiting for the ferry and it takes you across water. Worth it
Erin S — Google review
Beautiful ferry ride. Got to see some dolphins. Fort Morgan is so beautiful. Several houses are water fronted. The place is amazing. Worth visiting and spending a weekend.
Sunil S — Google review
Small Ferry holds about 28 vehicles. Runs every hour and a half so a lot of waiting time. Very scenic though about 30 mins long.
Alysa N — Google review
The ferry is great and for the kids quite the adventure. But in summertime MAKE SURE to have plenty of cold water and/or drinks because you have to turn OFF your vehicle engine and let me tell on a sunny day you're sitting in an oven so easy to overheat. Past that issue which is easily prepared for I think the ferry is worth every penny. Get there early and tour Ft Morgan or have a picnic Surely beats fighting traffic both ways. Safe travels
Billy — Google review
What a wonderful experience. The ferry offers a much faster means of transportation than driving. The ride is delightful and is reasonably priced. Easy on and off with the vehicle. No fuss at all. It's a must.
Melissa H — Google review
Amazing ride across the bay, friendly staff and easy load and unload.

Battery Duportail

4.8
(143)
Historical landmark
Battery Duportail is a historic bi-level concrete gun battery located on the coastline. It was active between 1809 and 1923, making it the most powerful battery at Fort Morgans during that time. Visitors can explore the gun emplacement and even discover a creepy tunnel that goes underground. The site also holds historical significance, with connections to individuals who contributed to its construction, such as Nicholas Weekes, who provided millions of bricks for Fort Morgan.
This place was so cool and so much fun, my wife and I spent about 3 hours walking around taking it all in, it's just so incredible to see in person and get to have a feel of what it's like to be in the position to actually be someone there. There's also this super super creepy tunnel that goes I don't know how far underground we got scared when it went so far it got completely pitch dark haha but it was super fun, and we saw a little crab check the pictures.
Nathan J — Google review
It was an interesting place and fun to walk around and imagine what this place was like when it was active. Definitely check out the signage around that explains the Battery. Worth the $8 entry!
Andrew H — Google review
Great place to visit and see what soldiers used to survive. Also, kinda spooky, definitely wouldn’t want to be there at night.

Really interesting mystery with museum, walk through the fort; great view and learning experience.
Karen C — Google review
This is well worth checking out for all ages! It has awesome views and alot of history. 8 dollars per person! Has some walking and stairs. But has a handicap entrance as well!
Audrey M — Google review
Amazing place to go!!! Days back to a Spanish gun battery in 1780 or so, this fort is rich with American history!! You really have to see this for yourself, make the trip to the end of the peninsula and you won't regret it.
Neil M — Google review
I found out today that my 4th great-grandfather Nicholas Weekes provided millions of brick to build Fort Morgan. He owned and operated the Brick Yard. I will try to attach photos of the intricate brickwork completed by over 3000 slave labor workers. It was fascinating going through Fort Morgan after more than 20 years ago visiting this place. Knowing that my 4th Great-grandfather was the first owner of the Brick Yard and recalling my father talk about the Brick Yard in the 1950's gives me pause that my family long ago was a part of a piece of Baldwin County history. Shame on the Baldwin County planners of the 200 anniversary of Baldwin County for ignoring Nicholas Weekes and his contributions to Baldwin County. Nicholas Weekes' great grandson, Rudolph Weekes owned 3 schooners that hauled watermelons from Baldwin County to New Orleans. Two of the schooner's names were: The Riley W and The Emily W. Photos of these 2 schooners hung in their living room. The brick work at Fort Morgan's Battery DuPortail is very detailed. Bricks are everywhere comprising every room, nick, storage, or office area. Military personnel do not have to pay to tour Fort Morgan or the museum. Just show your military ID card. Sorry I did not get the prices. Also, you can board the ferry there and go across the bay. It lands somewhere south of Bellingrath Gardens. That would make a good dual excursion...Fort Morgan and Bellingrath Garden.

Battery Bowyer

Historical landmark
Battery Bowyer, located within Fort Morgan State Park, served the United States Army from 1898 to 1917. This reinforced concrete coastal gun battery played a significant role in both the Spanish-American War and World War 1. Visitors are advised to arrive early and allow ample time to explore this historically rich site. With its intriguing past and stunning location, Battery Bowyer is an amazing spot for history enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.
A lot of history in this place, if you go make sure to get there early and don't have a time limit or you'll miss something.

Interesting piece of history to walk along and imagine what it looked like when the guns were in place. Unfortunately people are not able to explore the structure like Fort Morgan itself. I’m sure it would offer some great views if allowed.
Michael E — Google review
This was neat. It was closed off just like the one at Fort Pickens, Pensacola is. Something about the seawater weakening the mixture of concrete in these two structures. It was really neat to see and imagine the life it once told.

Seafood restaurant
Tacky Jacks Fort Morgan is a casual seafood spot with stunning waterfront views that attracts visitors for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Guests rave about the delicious dishes such as blackened Alligator Tail bites and seafood gumbo. The friendly staff adds to the experience, providing excellent customer service whether dining in or placing a pick-up order over the phone. It's recommended for those looking for a relaxed dining experience with great food and beautiful views.
My husband and I went to this restaurant and had an amazing first experience. Our server Solo did a wonderful job on helping us choose the best drinks and food and making sure everything was perfect. He also gave us great ideas on what to do during our first stay here at Fort Morgan. My husband got the Mexican garbage and I got the Tacky shrimp and both were really good. We sat outside towards the bay right before sunset and it was beautiful!

Good meal, much more laidback vibe from Gulf shores. If you are staying in Fort Morgan make sure to eat here. A few thoughts First the bad 1. Our 2 year old was given a coloring sheet along with some puzzles to do, but we asked for crayons, we were informed they don’t provide crayons. Most will think this complaint is silly, but it’s just a lack of being detail oriented. Our waiter did bring her a pen to play with. 2. Was not crazy about the fried green tomato’s. I was excited to see them prepared “French fry style” as I had never seen that, but the tomato’s lacked flavor and may have used some older oil. Now for the good stuff 1. The grilled grouper was the fresh catch today, it was one of the best things I’ve even all week. 2. My wife’s “flaky fried fish” was very good quality and cooked great, but it needed the tartar sauce to add a little flavor. 3. My collard greens were to die for and the mashed potato’s was a good switch up from all the fried food we have had this week. Overall this is a nice place to eat, just need to dial in the details and it could be next level. Best part was NO WAIT at 5:30 👍👍👍 Check it out!
Mike H — Google review
The waiter took our order quickly and left. We left our table and drinks to take a quick picture of the sunset. Less than five minutes. Went back to the table and it had been cleared before food had been served. We told the manager and they made us new drinks. Our order came... the taco salad was fresh from a taco seasoning packet we could have done better at home. The boiled shrimp, corn and potatoes .... corn and potatoes were wonderful. The shrimp was gritty. We will not be back.
Anna L — Google review
Good meal and experience overall. We stopped by for lunch yesterday and the deck was packed because it was so nice outside. We got in and out in a reasonable amount of time and the food was good overall. My fried shrimp was very good as was my wife’s flaky fish sandwich.
Rob H — Google review
Tacky Jack’s is a great option if you are staying in the Fort Morgan area. It’s not a far drive like some of the other options around. We visited twice on our stay. If you visit I would recommend Gator Bites for an appetizer <or even a meal/ also a big hit with my 4yr old! > They are mouth watering and my go-to! My entree was Snow Crab Legs and they were wonderful as well, a little over seasoned but good. (Picture is missing my corn on the cob that my child took before the picture 😆) If you like Shrimp, Definitely get the Reds (my husband’s & his family’s fav) Also, Great drink menu— definitely give one a try! Beautiful water views, staff was nice, but be prepared to wait if visiting in the late afternoon. Good atmosphere, can be a little loud at times.. but overall a good experience.
Shania A — Google review
Our last night here and it was later in the evening and we decided this was dinner. Ordered the shrimp platter and wife got nachos. Food was good, portions were good, nachos were really good. I agree, it is a little pricey, but by the time you drive 18 to 25 miles to the city, it’s not that bad. Atmosphere is great, service was quick and the servers were friendly. The parking lot was full at 7:30pm but we didn’t have to wait, so that’s a plus as well. Great shrimp, we hope to come back one day!
J T — Google review
We picked up some appetizers and overall, everything I tried was good. We did try to eat in during peak hours one day but we were told party sizes were limited to 6 people so we ended up leaving. Seemed like a nice place though!
Jeremy K — Google review
Food and service was decent. What’s got us grossed out is the cleanliness. Mold all over the highchair is insane.( pictures attached)Walls and doors are caked with filth and the glimpse in the kitchen door when opened was basically the same. Prices are high but to be expected in a tourist town.
