Takashima City Agricultural Park Makino Pick land is a picturesque park featuring U-pick orchards with a variety of seasonal fruits. Additionally, it has a gelato and souvenir shop. The park offers a peaceful environment that can calm your mind. It's an ideal place to take beautiful photos early in the morning when there are fewer cars on the road. A coffee shop opens at 7 am for coffee lovers.
Super great place… next time will stay 1 night at this small town. Beautiful quiet and awesome ambience…

Avenue of Metasequoia trees

Scenic spot
The Avenue of Metasequoia trees, also known as Metasekoia Namikimichi, is a stunning 2.4-kilometer stretch lined with approximately 500 majestic dawn redwood trees. This enchanting road leads to the Makino Highlands and offers breathtaking views throughout the year. In spring, visitors are greeted by fresh greenery, while summer showcases deep green foliage.
Amazing place to visit! Went during the end of winter, 7 Mar 2025. Judging from other's reviews, you will have to visit this place in different seasons for another experience, so chose your season wisely if you have limited time to travel haha! Those who drive, there are no parkings along the stretch of roads, the closest will be the small town up north or down south.
Poh B — Google review
Metasequoia Namiki Avenue is a breathtaking natural attraction that lives up to its reputation as one of Japan’s most scenic tree-lined roads. Stretching 2.4 kilometers and flanked by around 500 towering dawn redwood trees, the avenue offers a serene and picturesque walk, especially during quieter weekdays . Pros: -Stunning Seasonal Beauty: The trees transform dramatically with the seasons—lush greenery in summer, golden hues in autumn, and a serene, snow-dusted landscape in winter. I visited in late spring and was captivated by the fresh foliage . Tranquil Atmosphere: Despite being a popular spot, walking further down the road provides a peaceful escape from crowds. Early mornings or weekdays are ideal for uninterrupted photos . Convenient Access: The nearby Makino Pic-Land parking lot and local bus options (from JR Makino Station) make it easy to reach . Cons: Weekend Crowds: The area can get busy, with limited parking near the entrance. Arriving before 10 AM is advisable . Limited Amenities On-Site: While there are cafes and shops nearby (like Namiki Cafe Metasequoia), the avenue itself lacks facilities, so bring water and snacks . Final Thoughts: A must-visit for nature lovers and photographers, though planning around peak times enhances the experience. Loses a star for accessibility challenges during high season, but the majestic scenery more than compensates! 🌿📸

We visit at least once each season and love this place! Still trying to catch it in the snow and hoping for a chance this winter. The walkway along the row of trees is lovely. Go early and on a weekday to avoid crowds.

The Metasequoia Tree-lined Road in Makino, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, is a breathtaking sight. This picturesque road boasts approximately 500 towering metasequoia trees lining both sides for about 2.4 kilometers. Here's what makes it special: Seasonal Beauty: The trees offer stunning visuals throughout the year: Spring: Fresh, vibrant green leaves emerge. Summer: Lush green foliage creates a cool, refreshing canopy. Autumn: The leaves transform into a vibrant display of golden and reddish-brown hues. Winter: The bare trees create a dramatic, snow-covered landscape. Photogenic: The road is incredibly photogenic, making it a popular spot for photographers and social media enthusiasts. Peaceful Atmosphere: The towering trees and the straight road create a sense of tranquility and awe. Easy Access: The road is easily accessible by car, making it a popular driving route.
Mehedi H — Google review
Breathtaking row of trees along this quiet road that changes greatly with the seasons. A verdant green in summer, but I'd come back just to see it in autumn as well. There's a reasonably large parking lot which the signage will direct you to. There are also various shops and restaurants along the road and in the vicinity. Despite being a road, it's not super busy so it's possible to take photos with no other people or vehicles with a bit of patience. Most people also tend to gather around the carpark entrance, but you can walk further down for a more quiet experience.

Nestled in the northern part of Shiga, Kaizu Osaki is a breathtaking peninsula that offers stunning views of Lake Biwa and is renowned for its cherry blossoms. As one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, it boasts around 800 cherry trees lining a picturesque 4 km lakeshore. Typically blooming from early to mid-April, this location serves as an excellent alternative for those seeking late-season sakura experiences.
What a gem! We did pit stop at this place thru google map recommendation. A pleasant spot for fishing. Bring along your fishing rod, sit back n enjoy (i would do that given the opportunity!

Beautiful place to visit during cherry blossom season in early April. It’s in the north and cooler here so blossoms will bloom a little later than in Kyoto or southern Shiga. In summer there are still nice views and a good places for picnics and a little swimming. If you are driving you can continue on to the Oku Biwako Parkway which has spectacular views of Lake Biwa!

Really beautiful. I am doing one full lap around Lake Biwa by bike and just stopped here. It’s April 30th and the scenery looks more like summer. Everything is very green. Definitely worth it.

Perfect place for sakura watching. If come by car, we have to go to the car park first and go to the Biwako by bus with 300¥ per people. If go by train, you have to take a bus, but it really far to go there by walking. You can see sakura by waking along the street, sakura was everywhere. It is wonderful time!! They have a small boat to look sakura from Biwako. Price: 1000¥/person for 15 minutes, safety and peaceful. It is perfect for watching sakura and watching Biwako, the heart of Shiga. Flower and lake, so romantic and peaceful. They have some small food under the sakura for traveller, bbq pork and noodle. There don't have a lot of tourist, just Japanese local people and some Chinese people. It is a quiet place for me and the people who don't like noisy and crowned tourist spots. The air is very clear, quiet, cold. Sakura full of blossom. I am lucky because sakura wait for me, and this far away from my place, about 1 hour and 45 minutes for driving. Center of Shiga was end of sakura season. I came here at 8April2018.

HOGONJI is a captivating Buddhist temple located in the picturesque Shiga region, surrounded by lush forests and offering stunning views of Lake Biwa. This serene sanctuary embodies traditional Japanese aesthetics, with its ancient trees and beautifully curated gardens that invite visitors to immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature. Accessible via a scenic ferry ride, HOGONJI sits atop a small hill on an island, making it an enchanting destination for those seeking peace and reflection.
On this amazing island, I witnessed a dazzling array of lakeside vistas including beautifully elegant shrines and temples. I highly recommend going here. There are several stone staircases with quite a few steps so make sure that you have plenty of water, and are in reasonable shape to hike here. I have been to a great many islands, and shrines since living in Japan, but in my humble opinion this ranks very highly on my list.

Never have I ever felt more magic in such a setting. Absolutely jaw dropping beautiful. Worth the visit. $35 CAD ain't expensive for all the reviews complaining about price. One of the most unique temple and shrine sites in all of Japan. On a little island that screams ethereal.

Lake Biwa, named after the shape of a Japanese lute, is a picturesque destination offering various water sports and leisurely strolls. Located in Shiga Prefecture, it is surrounded by attractions such as Hikone Castle and Chikubu Island. The area provides opportunities for outdoor activities like visiting Rakuraku Garden, Koki Park, Takeshima Island, and more.
Absolute stunning. I take a bus tour and one of the place we visited is lake biwa. This place is definitely a hidden gem just like almost everything else in eastern Hokkaido. Nothing that is mindblowing but the vibe and atmosphere is so serene and i dont mind spending hours just to sit in the bench and enjoy everything i lies my eyes on. It is clean and they sell a nice ice cream there. During my visit on summer (june) it feels pretty breezy and cool unlike the hot weather that i experience in Tokyo. The issue is that it is kinda difficult to reach this place without bus tour or public transport.
William G — Google review
I captured these images of "Lake Biwa" from a moving train while traveling on the 'Kosei Line' from Shin-Osaka to Tsuruga. Looking at a map of Japan, I never imagined that "Lake Biwa" would feel so expansive, almost like an ocean, until I experienced its beauty and vastness firsthand. It was a truly remarkable journey and a discovery for me.
Okawa T — Google review
Had the privilege to see Lake Biwa from a viewpoint up in Hieizan. That vantage point gives a better perspective how the lake's shape is indeed similar to a biwa, a type of traditional Japanese lute. Overwhelming size which makes sense as it is the largest freshwater lake in Japan. From what I've read, this is also considered to be one of the oldest lakes in the world given its formation was ~5 million years ago.

Was not able to visit it but passed by it via thunderbird train from kanazawa to Osaka. Was able to get some pics and video of it

Started at Otsu by Biwako hotel, we biked up the west side of the lake. There is a dedicated bike lane all along the lake. It's not easy to get lost as long as you follow the road along the water. Going over the biwako ohashi you end up biking through a little town with quaint and cute little stores. It's a bit of a round about way. Going back down the east side of the lake you end up on the "bike path" along the highway. It is not the safest way but it's the only way. South lake round trip is about 50km. North lake is about 170km according to the Japanese sweets shop ojisan. Definitely a good workout to burn off all the yumminess that went into out bellies during this trip. :)

Hakodateyama Ski Resort is a traditional and low-key destination that offers a variety of trails suitable for all levels of skiers. The resort features a kids' park and stunning panoramic views of the surrounding lakes. Accessing the resort is relatively easy, with public transportation options available. Visitors can take advantage of ample parking facilities and gondola rides to access the peaks. Instructors are available for private bookings, providing guidance for skiers of all levels.
wonderful day! easy access with lots of parking (and local bus stop just inside parking area), gondola ride up was warm and safe, ski rental was fast, there are three food options on the slopes, and all the staff were professional and kind. beautiful day, with decent snow that was a surprise given how warm it is still. a nice mix of foreigners (overheard skiing class being given in english) and locals. big easy slopes for beginners, too. will definitely return this season;
Andrea H — Google review
Very beginner friendly and nice place to start your ski journey! Many locals as well. They have private lessons and the instructor Kaoru san was so patient and helpful in teaching me the basics of skiing. There were 3/4 slopes in total that you can choose from - all relatively doable and a good practice resort to get better at skiing. Everything is available for rental. Recommend to head down earlier if you want to catch your bus so that you can queue and make it for the bus (many people on the day we went). Overall a wonderful experience!

It was my second time skiing in Japan and this experience was not as great as the ones at another ski resort. We had booked a package for this resort via Klook. On the day, there was only 1 lift and 2 slopes (1 was a beginner one for practicing), luckily there were not too many people so it wasn’t too crowded. Change rooms & coin lockers were inconvenient as the area to change was extremely small, and it cost ¥300 to open each time. Keep ¥100 coins if you plan to use the lockers! The ski pants rented were not water resistant as you’d expect. Unfortunately when we went (31 Dec), it wasn’t cold enough for this resort to have snow so we had man made ice. We were told by the guide that there would be snow later in Jan.
Shandi P — Google review
I found this place by chance. So i added in the Itinerary and it's a good idea. This place is so wonderful. we enjoyed our snow family bonding! It's so nice to see my daughter having so much fun! It's also easy to get here. Few rides and walk and you'll be here. For those who are going by public, take Tokaido sanyo-line going to Omi-Imazu. Exit the station and there will be a bus on the right exit. Take Bus no. 2 Local bus it will drop you off at the Hakodateyama gondola ride.. Don't ride the JR bus no. 1.

Cultural landmark
Shirahige Shrine Torii is a stunning and unique sight located at Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. The vermillion Torii gate appears to float on the calm turquoise waters, creating a picturesque scene that's reminiscent of Itsukushima in the east. Visitors can enjoy activities like stand-up paddleboarding on the serene lake before taking a short trip to Hikone Castle for an enchanting view of its three-level castle keep.
A must go. The shrine across the street is fabulous. But just know that you can’t walk near this gate. You take a picture across the street They built a view point so you can see over the street.
Gabriella L — Google review
A picturesque torii on Lake Biwa in front of Shirahige Shrine. There's a small observation deck at Shirahige Shrine, as signage advises not to cross the road - there is a main road between the shrine and the lake with no crossings or sidewalk. Still pretty and would look great on a day with good weather.
Bent Z — Google review
It’s photogenic torii on Biwa lake in front of Shirahige shrine, coming with kids not recommended. Road is very busy and there is no crossing. You cannot go near the gate because it’s surrounded by fence but they have small deck to see Torii from there. Parking: free Toilet: yes

Another sightseeing spot around Biwako. It was around 30 minutes walk from the closest station. Nice view and the temple at the back of the main gate was also a good space for a break.

Heard all the hype about it and finally came to visit this shrine at Biwako. This is during early autumn and quite frankly, I cannot see the hype.  I am not sure if it was the greenery not turning red or I am not such a big fan of shrines, but I couldn't feel the enthusiasm of the place. The shrine entrance structure built in the waters was indeed quite special but that was about it.  The place to take photos were also limited.  Hence, I cannot imagine when things get messy with crowds, how will the photo turn out. Worth a visit only if you are sort of passing by.  Probably take no more than 15 to 30mins to see this place. But I must add that I did see some local office workers all dressed up and seeking for blessings at the shrine. A monk was in attendance during that time.
金Ck — Google review
In mid-February, I visited Lake Biwa and stumbled upon this hidden gem: a floating Torii Gate. The scenery was breathtakingly beautiful, made even more magical by the gentle snowfall that graced the day. To top it off, I was also fortunate enough to witness the delicate beauty of plum blossoms in bloom.
00Y — Google review
(Trip was made back then on 29 Nov 2019, 2 years before the Covid-19 Pandemic hit) Shirahige Shrine stands out from many other Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples around as it’s famous for its vermillion Torii gate floating on Lake Biwa, which happens to be the largest lake in Japan. It is often regarded as the Itsukushima of the east despite being comparatively smaller in scale. When I planned for our autumn trip 2 years ago and Shiga was on the itinerary, I knew that we this was an absolute must-go-to place, no matter how inconvenient it was, and boy was it worth it. Upon our arrival in town, we immediately headed out to witness the sunset, and even came back the following morning to experience the sunrise. Honestly, the view was magnificent at any given day and it was well worth making the 2 trips. Personally, I feel that the torii gate at Shirahige Shrine is more captivating as Lake Biwa and the natural surrounding serves as a perfect backdrop which evokes a soothing sense of tranquility. One can admire a breathtaking scenery of Lake Biwa with the torii gate floating surreally on the water surface. If we weren’t rushed for time, I could just sit there all day admiring the picturesque view. *Note: there is a highway that separates the torii gate from the shrine’s main compound, so take caution when crossing over as the traffic is quite heavy.
Shingo — Google review
Signs clearly stipulate that crossing the road isn't allowed. If you're coming to see the tori and take a picture, there is a viewing deck to the right of the shrine. Don't cross the road. Don't be that tourist.

It's a quaint place in a small rural town. Very coffee shop like atmosphere. To have a cup of coffee this may be a good place. For food, not so much. They charge 1000 yen for what should be considered a pasta dish accompanying a main meat course. This would be less than 5 euro in Italy. The pasta recipe was very unconventional in a strange way. It was tomato sauce based but had a very small quantity of tomato bits. It looked like they just tossed the pasta with some diced tomato bits. Definitely not tomato sauce properly prepared. It was heavily peppered and squid bits were unidentifiable. It also had sliced lettuce which was the final blow. The weird texture and flavor of the lettuce bits are still lingering in my mouth. Try their desserts maybe but not their pasta. There was no other restaurant so I had no other choice.

The chef at Totoro is a charming individual, and the staff members are delightful. The cuisine served here is consistently delectable. This eatery has become a go-to spot for locals in Makino who seek engaging conversations with friendly individuals. It is also the perfect place to bring friends from abroad, as it offers an authentic taste of local Japanese fare.
We pre-booked a place in the restaurant. The place is easy to find on the map, there is parking. The food was served quickly. The sashimi was fresh, the tempura was very crispy! We liked everything. The price was also good. Thank you very much.

This time, I ordered the Super Rare Chicken Nanban Set Meal and the Grilled Omi Kurodori Chicken Set Meal. First, the rice 🍚 was shiny and delicious! The three-item platter included trout and game dishes that evoked Lake Biwa and the mountains. The soup was flavorful with Hatcho miso, the chicken main dish was truly beautiful, and the seasonal baby corn with skin was also a delight! The sauce was delicious! And it was quite filling 🍚🍚🍚 I'm curious to try the other menu items, so I plan to return. This is a recommended restaurant in Shiga. This time, I tried to go right when they opened without a reservation, but I arrived too early... I was thinking of waiting in the car, when a female staff member noticed my car and came out to let me sit early, saying my table was ready! I had the Nanban and Charcoal Grill, both of which were very filling and delicious. I was very satisfied ♡ I wish I had had more of the Milk Tofu. The rice was about the same size as a regular large serving. And, in these times, they even offer a free refill of rice, which is amazing! Not only was the food delicious, but the staff were so kind and made me so glad I came! I had a great holiday (*^^*) I'll definitely come again, thank you for the meal! I called to make a reservation before arriving, and from the voice I received I could already sense the excitement building for the restaurant. The three of us ordered the charcoal grilled set meal, the super rare chicken nanban set meal, and the hamburger steak set meal. They were all very filling, and it was clear that a lot of effort had gone into preparing the three side dishes that came with them. Everything was delicious, but my favorite was the super rare chicken nanban. The yuzu pepper that came with the charcoal grilled set meal went really well with the chicken nanban, so I would have appreciated a little extra. Day 2

West side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the west side side of town. Start the day off with Shirahige Shrine, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Biwako Valley. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Shirahige Shrine

Shinto shrine
Shirahige Shrine is a serene Shinto shrine complex located in Shiga Prefecture, just north of Kyoto. One of its most striking features is the torii gate standing in the lake, offering picturesque water views. This shrine is often compared to the famous Great Torii Gate in Miyajima, Hiroshima. Visitors can also enjoy the stunning landscapes around Lake Biwa, including the renowned Metasequoia tree avenue and panoramic views from atop a nearby mountain.
When you reach there, you must be wondering how on earth they take photos like that? With the heavy traffic, it is unlikely you will be able to cross over just for a photo. So actually, there is a stage for you to climb up and take photos at an angle just beside the main temple. Currently, the main temple is under renovation, but you still could ring their bell and make a wish if you want to as they left an opening for it. There is an open carpark just beside the temple. (Free)

Parking available on site. You can walk up to visit the altars. There is a raised platform beside the road where you can go up to take a good photo of the shrine in the lake. Unfortunately, the weather was cloudy and thus we couldn’t capture a good shot of the sunset. The traffic towards Kyoto was very bad in the evening due to road works. It was a good one hour to overcome the stretch of about 8km or so.
Michael — Google review
This was a nice little pit stop along the way! There is a platform you can go up that gives you a good view for some nice pictures! I gave it 4 stars because some foreigner left a hot steamer in the women’s squatty potty and it looked like it had been there for a bit. My girls had 3 other squatty potties to pick from, but still.
Indigo G — Google review
Very nice view but the Torei are little hard to capture since you can't cross the street to get near the iconic figure.
Boonya K — Google review
Beautiful but not pedestrian friendly, walking right next to trucks and cars with no crosswalks. The nearest station is omi-Takashima, a 2.7km walk one way, so you’ll have to walk back to catch the train back to Kyoto (also maybe 2 trains max in an hour). Better if you drove, which there is a small parking lot area.
Alessia Y — Google review
the cab return trip is 2900¥, and it is so boring to go (maybe we went on a not nice weather day)
Maru T — Google review
Got up really early to be able to see the sunrise. There was a bit of clouds on the horizon but still it was a great sight. Road has alot of traffic and you need to climb over the barrier to get on the other side. Nice temple on the opposite side but we were there too early so it was not opened yet. It was worth the trouble of getting up early if you love sunrises like me.

The Biwako Kodomo-no Kuni park offers a wide array of child-oriented activities, such as climbing, crafting and free play. It is an ideal family destination with numerous indoor and outdoor playgrounds, as well as a small restaurant to cater for visitors who do not bring their own food. Additionally, the park provides BBQ areas at an affordable price of 900 yen per space for those who want to enjoy outdoor meals.
A huge park facility with a wide variety of playgrounds available for all ages of children. And it’s free!!! Bring a tent if you visit here because you will spend the whole day there. They also offer several paid activities, including an indoor playground and bike rides around the park. It’s recommended to bring your own food and drink because no supermarket/kombini nearby, but they have restaurant inside the building. At the back it is connected to Lake Biwa, and we can play by the lake. Totally recommend to visit this park. *Ps: if you plan to visit by public transportation, please check the bus schedule from Adogawa Station to this park beforehand because the schedule is quite infrequent, and come as early as possible to reserve a tent spot under big trees.

We arrived at 9:10am on a Tuesday in May. All boom gates to the car park were down and unattended. We parked nearby and walked through the car park into the playground. There was no one else here, so had the place to ourselves. Our 14 & 15 year olds had the best time, even saying "this is the best playground we've ever been to!". They were very keen to use the drop slide and the rest of the older kid equipment, but it was all ropped off. Toilets were clean and well stocked. We didn't try the restaurant, because it looked closed and unattended. It was a bit eerie being the only ones here, but we had a great time with lots of old school play equipment. Recommended!

Fantastic place to spend a whole day with your family, specially if you have little kids. Plenty of things to do, outdoor and indoor playgrounds, a small restaurant in case you decide not to bring obento, an area for BBQ, etc, and all for the price of the parking fee (500 yen for the whole day). Highly recommend as a day trip from Kyoto.

Kids and family park with Lake Biwa front. Amazing location and lots of activities for kids of all age groups. You can spend the whole day and still not cover all the activities they have to offer. Designates Bbq area where you can pay and get a spot to do bbq and setup camp, it’s a day camp site so you can’t stay overnight. The also have a central building with various cultural activities indoors like Handcrafts, gym, food court, wall climbing, air castle and more. Outdoors you have rental family rides and kids single bikes. Giant air balloon they call aqua roll where you can run inside a giant air ball. Disc golf and ground golf. Parking is 500 yen on site. Divides in 2 parts For bbq site on left after entering main parking lot. Very crowded during golden week for parking but there is also a private parking 100m on left before entering the parks parking.

Ski resort
Biwako Valley is a resort complex in Shiga, offering stunning views of Lake Biwa and providing various activities for visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. In winter, it's a popular ski destination with cable car access and rental shops for ski equipment. Families can have fun playing in the snow with free sliding areas and toys for kids.
Looking for snow around Osaka and Kyoto area? You can get it here in winter times! Easily accessible with public transportation. You can go to the valley entrance via bus from the nearest train station. Check the schedule from the website of biwako valley. The price might be a bit expensive especially if you did not bring your own winter equipment but for the snow experience for beginners it is recommended.

**Transportation and Arrival:** Our journey to Biwako Valley began with a train ride from Osaka to Shiga train station. Upon arrival, we opted for a local bus or a taxi to reach the Biwako Ropeway Station entrance. For a group of five without luggage or ski gear, a taxi ride cost us 1600 Yen. If you're driving, expect to park in a lower parking area and take a free shuttle to the entrance. **Ticketing and Gondola:** Purchasing ropeway tickets and boarding the gondola was a breeze with a short 10-minute wait. For those not planning to ski, it's advisable to buy only the ropeway ticket, while chairlift tickets are necessary for skiing. Afternoon tickets, available at a reduced price, are ideal for visitors arriving around noon. **At the Top:** The summit was moderately crowded, offering a pleasant atmosphere despite the many visitors. The sled and play area are relatively small, but there's a lot more to explore. Ski school, the Grande Terrace, and play areas are located in the lower building on your right after exiting the gondola. Meanwhile, ski rentals and the cafeteria are situated in the upper building. **Skiing Experience:** The ski slopes were not overly crowded, though visitor numbers are expected to rise as temperatures drop. For convenience, clothing and ski gear can be rented at Shiga train station, the bottom ropeway station, and the upper building after the top ropeway station. Check out Biwako Valley official website for rental rates. **Scenic Views:** One of the highlights of our visit was the stunning view of Shiga town and Biwa Lake from the Grande Terrace. The panoramic vistas were simply breathtaking and made the trip even more memorable. In conclusion, our visit to Biwako Valley was a delightful experience with easy access, smooth ticketing, enjoyable skiing, and spectacular views. It’s a fantastic destination for both ski enthusiasts and those simply looking to take in the natural beauty of the area.

One of the most beautiful places I have been to. It seems this should be more common on itineraries of Kyoto travel. Traveling to and from the Valley is not cheap if you consider the train, bus, and tram. But the view is absolutely incredible, and there are plenty of fun activities to do (some for extra price).

You can get here using the JR line from Kyoto Station, then continue by bus to the Biwako valley area, and finally use the cable car to reach the valley. All worth it for my son's first snow experience. Recommended!

Soba noodle shop
If you’re looking for authentic Japanese soba in a peaceful setting, Shirahige Juwari Soba is a must-visit. Located near Shirahige Shrine in Shiga Prefecture, this cozy soba shop serves juwari soba, made with 100% buckwheat flour — meaning no wheat is added. The noodles have a wonderfully firm texture and a rich, nutty flavor that stands out even when served simply with cold dipping sauce. The shop offers both cold and hot soba options, and seasonal side dishes like tempura made with local vegetables. The interior is warm and traditional, with wooden decor and a relaxed, countryside feel. The staff are kind and patient, and the menu usually includes pictures or simple English explanations, making it foreigner-friendly. What makes this place special is the combination of true craftsmanship and the serene lakeside atmosphere nearby. Whether you’re stopping by after visiting Shirahige Shrine or exploring Lake Biwa, this soba experience is worth the detour. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to taste real Japanese soba made the old-fashioned way.

(Translated by Google) This 100% buckwheat soba restaurant is located in a great location overlooking Lake Biwa. The spacious restaurant was bustling with customers, and some people could be seen writing their names at the entrance and waiting for their turn. It was a busy time, so the staff were a little hurried, but since it was soba, the turnover seemed relatively quick. I had 100% buckwheat soba and seared mackerel sushi. The soba was finely ground, with a faint aroma of fluffy buckwheat flour and a firm texture with an excellent bite. The seared mackerel sushi was delicious, with an exquisite balance of fatty mackerel and vinegared rice. They also had mackerel sushi for takeaway, and many customers were seen purchasing some. It has nothing to do with Edward Newgate, but rather with its proximity to Shirohige Shrine. There's a torii gate at Lake Biwa, so it's popular with tourists. The parking lot is large, but the restaurant was bustling with customers even after 1:00 PM on a weekday. ◎Zaru Soba (Zanko Soba) - Manzoku Mori (1,815 yen) ◎Saba Sushi I was debating whether to order the double mori, but I decided to go with the Manzoku Mori (Saba Sushi) as I wanted to try the mackerel sushi as well. The soba broth was served in a bowl, and the 100% buckwheat soba was smooth and delicious. I shared a piece of mackerel sushi with a client. My client was visiting from Tokyo and thought the mackerel sushi might taste a bit fishy, but he said it was delicious. Yakiniku restaurant
Prior to the relocation, the majority of shops were established, but following the move, it is mostly different. Exercise caution upon entering as the floor might be slippery. Additionally, use a tissue to cleanse the table with rubbing alcohol (is this precaution related to COVID-19?). Even though it may turn yellow due to being a yakiniku restaurant, there's no remedy for that. Customers have options between ordering set meals or single pieces of meat.
Nice and cozy. Healthy portions and a simple but easy to enjoy menu. 5 stars service and attitude from the staff!

Very traditional and simple BBQ restaurant using gas stove without any exhaust. (Be forewarned, your clothes will smell of BBQ after the meal 😬🤪) The yummy 😋 BBQ beef would compensate for the smell. Reasonably priced with different choices of beef meats. Quite thick slice of beef meats. Best eat with beer. DIY BBQ. Nice cheerful and helpful staff. No credit card, Cash only payment.
Leong — Google review
Very satisfying meat platters and huge bowls of fluffy Japanese rice filled our table, this yakiniku restaurant is the best for beef lovers to go all out at. Prices are affordable and quality is very good, would easily recommend this to anyone looking for a good meal and don’t mind a simpler (rather run down) setting with poor air extraction/ventillation and greasy floors. Minus 2 stars for the environment; but other then that this place is exceptional and a gem.

Very good service even for non Japanese speakers, food is very ordinary but authentic, a good decision to avoid those fine dining restaurants in the mountain area. Don't expect too much for the room environment, it is very 'local' and 'family like'.

It’s a very good place too get a quick and delicious dinner. The rice bowl you get is very big, so you will definitely get full. I would give 5 stars but I don’t like the fact that you are allowed to smoke inside the restaurant. There is no English menu but the staff is willing to show you what part of the body of the cow or pork it is when you order :D give it a try ;)

Hiyoshi Taisha, located in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, is a serene shrine complex set amidst lush grounds with trees, bridges and a flowing stream. It is also known as Yamanote Shrine and holds historical significance dating back to the 8th century. The shrine's buildings were reconstructed in the late 16th century after being destroyed by war in 1571.
Quiet shrine at a much less touristy area to enjoy autumn leaves. Plenty of walking space and very clean toilets. Definitely a place to visit if you are into Shinto shrine and autumn colours. Y$500 to enter.

Went there as Hinatazaka46 made a trip there for their hit campaign. Grounds were large and a bit confusing. Made up my mind to climb to see the big rock (金大嚴)up on the hill and oh boy was it tough. Hiyoshi Taisha, located in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, is a Shinto shrine with a rich history dating back over 2,000 years. Founded during the reign of Emperor Sujin, it has served as a sacred site dedicated to the deity Hiyoshi Okami, associated with water and agriculture. The shrine gained prominence during the Heian period and became closely linked to the powerful Minamoto and Taira clans. Hiyoshi Taisha is unique for its syncretic worship of Shinto and Buddhism, exemplified by its connection to the nearby Enryaku-ji, a prominent Buddhist temple on Mount Hiei. The annual Sanno Matsuri festival, held in June, is a highlight, attracting visitors with vibrant processions and traditional performances. Throughout centuries, the shrine has undergone reconstruction due to natural disasters and conflicts. Today, it stands as a cultural and historical treasure, reflecting Japan's enduring spiritual traditions and the integration of Shinto and Buddhist influences.
Divertimento — Google review
Hiyoshi Taisha is an old Japanese shrine, and it has a forest-style yard and garden which has numerous old, tall trees for more than several hundred years. In addition, the visitors can see the clean flow of water circulating or flowing through various temples in the Shrine area. But the Shrine may be in crisis probably due to insufficient fund for the maintenance and repair. For example, most of the tree-bark roofs of the Shrine's worshiping temples are in damaging conditions. Also, a few lion-shaped Guards in front of the worshipping shrines or temples are also in damaged condition. Visitors who are interested in the Shrine can take the same Keihan commuter train to visit Ishiyama-dera Temple of the Otsu area. Alos, there are various other smaller temples outside Hiyoshi Taisha, between subway station and Shrine's main gate.

Sakamoto Castle Ruins Park is a lakeside park with a rich history, once home to a 16th-century castle. The park features a statue of the legendary samurai Akechi Mitsuhide and offers stunning views of Lake Biwa. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll around the park and enjoy the serene atmosphere. Additionally, there are boat rental options nearby for those looking to explore the lake further.

It’s a nice little resting spot with toilets, a place to sit, and a gorgeous view of Lake Biwa—you can even stroll along the lakeside. Historically, this is where Akechi Mitsuhide built his castle after betraying Oda Nobunaga in the Honnō-ji Incident. They even have a monument dedicated to him.
Google review
(Translated by Google) Sakamoto Castle Ruins Park was developed on the site of Sakamoto Castle (a nationally designated historic site) on the shores of Lake Biwa, along National Route 161 in Shimosakamoto, Otsu City, about 1.7 km south of JR Hieizan Sakamoto Station. In 1571, shortly after Oda Nobunaga burned down Enryaku-ji Temple with 30,000 soldiers, Oda Nobunaga (1534-1582) constructed Sakamoto Castle on the shores of Lake Biwa, ordering his vassal Akechi Mitsuhide (1528-1582) to watch over Enryaku-ji Temple and rule the Shiga County area at the foot of the mountain. Sakamoto Castle's first distinctive feature is its "water castle" style, in which water from Lake Biwa is brought into the castle grounds. Mitsuhide's tea ceremony teacher, Tsuda Sogyu of Sakai, Osaka, was invited to Sakamoto Castle and held a tea ceremony there. He wrote, "After the ceremony, we boarded a royal boat from the castle and headed to Azuchi Castle." Sakamoto Castle was a magnificent fortress with towering main and small main towers. Luis Frois, who was in Japan as a Jesuit missionary at the time, said, "The castle built by Akechi is magnificent and magnificent, second only to Nobunaga's Azuchi Castle." Construction of Sakamoto Castle began four years earlier than Azuchi Castle, making it a pioneering example of modern castles. Mitsuhide used Sakamoto Castle as his base and worked hard to pacify Omi under Nobunaga's orders, but in 1582 (Tensho 10), he led a rebellion and killed Oda Nobunaga and his son in the Honnoji Incident. However, Akechi Mitsuhide was killed in the Battle of Yamazaki, in which Hashiba Hideyoshi avenged his lord, and Sakamoto Castle fell just 10 years after it was built. After Sakamoto Castle fell, the late Nobunaga's senior vassals gathered at Owari Kiyosu Castle to divide Nobunaga's territory, a process known as chigyowari. Niwa Nagahide, who ruled the two counties of Shiga and Takashima in Omi, became the lord of Sakamoto Castle, while Hashiba Hideyoshi retained control of Yamashiro. At this so-called "Kiyosu Conference," many voices called for Hideyoshi to be made lord of Sakamoto Castle, but it is said that Hideyoshi handed it over to Niwa Nagahide, believing that "holding Sakamoto Castle would suggest he had ambitions to rule the country." This may have been because Sakamoto Castle was located at Imamichigoe, a key transportation point to Kyoto. In 1583, after Hideyoshi defeated Shibata Katsuie at Echizen Kitanosho, Nagahide was given Echizen, Wakasa, and the Kaga Peninsula, while Sakamoto Castle was taken over by Hideyoshi's vassal, Sugihara Ietsugu. However, rumors of Ietsugu's madness spread, and the castle was passed to Asano Nagayoshi, who had been given Seta Castle in the previous territorial division. After permission was granted to rebuild Enryaku-ji Temple's main gate in 1584, Sakamoto Castle no longer served as a watchdog for Enryaku-ji Temple. Furthermore, with Hideyoshi's construction of Osaka Castle, Otsu's importance in connecting the Hokuriku region with Osaka via land and water transport on the Tokaido and Yodo River increased, and Sakamoto Castle's historical role was handed over to Otsu Castle. After Sakamoto Castle was abandoned, the ruins were developed into farmland and residential areas. While it was a famous castle, its location and scale remain unknown, and it has become a mythical castle. Within the park, in a place thought to be within the castle grounds, stands the Akechizuka, said to be a memorial mound for Mitsuhide. Furthermore, during times of drought in Lake Biwa, the stone walls beneath the lake become visible, but are normally not visible.

It's a very simple shrine, but the view of Lake Biwa is great. There was a giant tree as the center piece of the shrine's park area, but it was blown down by a hurricane. There are a few benches that look out over the lake, so you can relax. If it's really windy, and in the fall or winter, it may be quite cold. There is also a very nice dango shop right in front of the shrine.

Karasaki Shrine : Karasaki Shrine is located in north part of Otsu City along the shore of Lake Biwa. The shrine has a strong connection with neighboring Hiyoshi Shrine located in the west on the foot of mountain. It is believed that the original form of shrine was established in here in 7th century. There is a gigantic pine tree planted in the ground widely spreading out its branches. It is interesting to know the fact that the same tree had been depicted in drawings of ancient times around 16th century. From the side of the shore which is a part of the precincts of the shrine you can see a nice view of the lake. This view from the shore is designated as one of the eight scenic sights of the lake in Omi region. There is an annual event called Mitarashi Festival held in this shrine at the end of July. Enkōji Temple is a Buddhist temple complex in Kyoto known for its stunning panoramic views, well-maintained gardens, and lush surroundings. It is the second most visited attraction in Kyoto and is famous for its Golden Pavilion, covered in gold leaf and resting on a large pond. The temple's gardens are also accessible to visitors, offering a serene and picturesque experience.
Maybe my favorite temple and garden I’ve been to in Kyoto. Just far enough from the famous spots that you will have it mostly to yourself (esp. not in high season). But not so far that you’ll exhaust yourself getting there. It has 2 or 3 gardens, depending on how you divide it: a stunning dry rock garden near the entrance, a moss garden inside, and a bamboo grove directly bordering the moss area (no barrier, thus it could be seen as one unit). You can walk through all of them. The temple is also gorgeous and has many areas where you can sit and gaze for as long as you’d like. I paid ¥800 on March 18th, 2025. It looks like prices may be a bit higher in high seasons such as cherry blossoms or fall colors.

Gorgeous temple with a call Zen garden, forest walkways, and mountainside views. Fantastic historical pieces and art on display inside. As a tourist, I did not perceive this as a place advertised as a Kyoto must-see. After attending, I think it is. It's not too far from nearby hiking and running trails. Entry fee was 800 yen. It is a very peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the busier parts of Kyoto

I was impressed about the stone garden and backyard green garden. Please go through the gate over the stone garden. I could sit down on the floor like zazen about 30 minutes or more. Trees and green are beautiful. And also we can see Kyoto city because here is in the mountain. It takes about 15 minutes from Shirakawa street on foot. ☆

We decided to travel north east to visit a few of the temples here and it was the best possible decision. Since it is a bit out of the way, almost no tourists were here. Enkoji is the most beautiful and serene temple we visited during our Japan trip. Beautiful architecture, stunning garden and hilltop view of Kyoto and even a small bamboo groove. The other temples in the locations coupled with Enkoji make it more than worthwhile to do this "detour" from the most dense tourist hotspots.

Reikan-ji Temple is a Buddhist nunnery located in the convenient vicinity of a bus stop (Bus 100). The temple opens for visitors twice annually, during April and November, allowing them to explore its stunning camellia gardens. The temple is relatively small but offers ample space for a serene nature walk. Its limited camellia display features numerous species, including a rare black camellia tree.
This commenced as a nunnery and was moved from its original location to the present one. The walk up to the temple is steep so if you have mobility issues best to use a taxi. The temple itself was beautiful. The camellias were all at different stages of bloom but the garden was beautiful to walk around.

Though I've visited Kyoto countless times, today marked my first trip to Reikanji. This normally secluded temple opens its doors to the public only during spring, showcasing its stunning array of pink, red, and white camellia blossoms.

Beautiful temple! Convenient location just a short walk from the bus stop (Bus 100). Really small, but plenty of garden and nature to walk about in. Made it for their limited camellia (tsubaki) display. There were many camellia species, including a rare black camellia tree, as introduced by the temple staff. Some of them do speak a bit of English, but Japanese gets you a little deeper conversation. Overall, a really beautiful and quiet place a short walk away from the Philosopher's Walk (Tetsugaku no Michi) and part of the cluster of famous temples in the area. Definitely worth a trip to! :)

I visited the Reikan-Ji for today's purpose Camellia, but their best condition had already passed, the heyday of Camellia had been gone, it made me down. In addition, Fallen Camellia were scattered on the moss so artificially, it also disappointed me. If I had come about two weeks earlier, the result would have been different. Reikan-ji Temple is located in the eastern direction when viewed from the Kyoto Imperial Palace, so it is in the direction of Rabbits in the 12 Zodiac Signs. Lucking up on the wall above the door of the upper warehouse, there were cute Rabbit Decorations. Furthermore, there was a small place of worship on the 10 m left side of the entrance of Reikanji, and when I looked inside, it had a Rabbit peeping inside hidden from square hole. In order to visit there, once you should get out on the road, then you will find out the entrance, relatively difficult to find it out by one glance. Without my information, you will easily miss it and pass away. In spite of sweat effort to come up to Reikanji, most of the visitors return without noticing this Rabbits decorations because they have not been introduced in the instruction manuals.

Kaju-ji is a serene Buddhist temple that boasts a beautiful garden with a pond, cherry trees that bloom in the spring, and colorful leaves during autumn. The garden is unique as it allows strolling instead of just viewing. Although best visited during spring and autumn due to its seasonal beauty, Kaju-ji also offers winter blooming Sakura and early blooming Kawazu in March. The temple's picturesque scenery makes for an enjoyable visit at any time of the year.
Lotus, water lilies, and hydrangeas are blooming beautifully. Highly recommended.

500 JPY for a ticket. 30 minutes of walking inside a garden that does not offer much. Might be an excellent place for a photoshoot session, but do pay attention to the weather, if it is cloudy, the whole place looks like a depressing sight. But if it is sunny then wow…

The momiji are gorgeous and there are winter blooming Sakura as of November 17. There were 2 bloomed hydrangeas on November 17 as well, which was a surprise to me. On March 9, there were kawazu (early blooming sakura). On April 1, there were full-bloomed さくら🌸.

A beautiful garden and scenic pond with a small temple on-site. It was very quiet when we visited. Get here from the Ono stop, one stop before Daigo-ji. We found our way here by accident, but we were so glad we came. A wonderful woman showed us the way to this place and then helped us get back to the train and on to Daigo-ji. Stop by for a visit, you won't regret it!

Really underrated temple for autumn colours. Well worth the trip to escape the crazy tourists crowd in key sights at Kyoto! Has a nice pond and a lovely small pagoda inside of it. It is also close to a subway station so it is easy to get to! Come and enjoy autumn without the whole world next to you!

not crowded, great small place to relax and walk around the pond

Spring is the best time to visit this slightly out of the way temple. The garden is unusual as it is a stroll-thru, as opposed to most other temple gardens which are made for viewing only. There is a pond too and a whole load of cherry trees which you are able to enjoy without the inevitable crowds biting at your heels. All in all a good experience but I'm not sure if it's worth a visit outside the Spring and Autumn seasons.

Makino Kogen is a picturesque destination that offers various activities for nature enthusiasts. The area features multiple camping zones, some of which provide pre-prepared tents for convenience. Visitors can revel in the natural surroundings and partake in camping, picnics, and BBQs. Additionally, there are onsen facilities where guests can unwind with their loved ones. The site also boasts stunning views of the natural landscape and is particularly popular during spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom.
Went with my family for some snow play. Easy to get to from Osaka. The price per car of people was very cheep. Rental fees for equipment were great. Good a bit expensive but not crazy. Nice facilities and staff. 100% will go back

Katsurahama-enchi Park is a picturesque destination nestled alongside the stunning Lake Biwa, renowned for its breathtaking views and vibrant red spider lilies that bloom across vast stretches. While there are limited parking options available, visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere as they stroll through the park, often accompanied by their furry friends. The best time to witness these flowers in full glory is early in the season; however, some may start to wither later on.
We go here every year in early October to see the Higanbana in bloom. Absolutely lovely and well maintained park. The views of the lake from the beach are also stunning.

The flowers bloom very beautifully, perhaps the best time is earlier, then fewer flowers, later, then the flowers wither. Some of the flowers have withered. Many people come to walk their dogs. Super adorable. Saw 2 cosplayers taking pictures. Also had a Japanese man take pictures. It seemed very approachable and I gave him some candy in return. It's a pity that I can't receive files of those pictures. If you have a camera to take photos, it costs 100 VND💯 It takes quite a while to get from the station to this location. Cars and motorbikes are the right choice. There are restrooms and parking. Ladies, please pay attention that the women's restroom does not have paper 🤣 (Original) Mình đến đây vào 5-10-2024 . (Translated by Google) A swimming hole located in Kosai along Shiga Prefectural Route 54 (Windmill Road). Because it's a lake, it's not a beach, but a swimming hole. Stopped in early in the morning in mid-November. Perhaps because it was off-season, the parking lot, which could accommodate about 20 cars, was free (during the season, there was a charge?). Across the prefectural road is Hamabunuma, and between the prefectural road and the beach is a pine forest. There were several shops lined up, including boat rentals and coffee shops, but perhaps because it was off-season or because it was early in the morning, they weren't open, and at first glance it looked like an abandoned building. ← Excuse me Well, I guess it's lively in the summer... The beach is not sand but coarse gravel. The waves were calm and the water quality was clean. Looking out over Lake Biwa, I could see the Sugaura Peninsula, Tsuzura Ozaki, Kaizu Osaki, and Chikubu Island, creating a spectacular view of Sumbara. If the sky is clear, you can even see Mt. Ibuki behind Chikubu Island.

Schools of 15-20cm fish were swimming in the stream that flows into the lake, so it looked like you could fish there too✨ My husband and children used a net to drive fish. I was hoping we'd catch some, and they really did catch them unscathed!! There was also an old toilet nearby (no pavers), and I'd like to come back again. There are only about 10 free parking spaces, and a similar number of paid parking spaces. There are free toilets, but you have to pay for showers. The water was clear in the morning, but in the afternoon there was a lot of algae, probably due to the tide changing. Still, the water was much cleaner than the swimming holes on the east side and the swimming holes in the middle and below. The swimming area is small, but wide and deep enough for children under elementary school age. The depth to the buoy is approximately 160cm, so it is best to let children play alone under the supervision of their parents. (Translated by Google) In conclusion, this is the lowest rating of 1 star. The division between skiing/snowboarding and sledding/snow play areas is not clearly defined, and there are cases of illegal activities such as skiers/snowboarders crossing the sledding area, or conversely, sledding families (inbound) climbing the ski/snowboard lift slopes. It has become a zone. There are also rest houses and ticket offices. There are no rules or manners, such as people ignoring the flow of traffic in front of the building, leaving chairs and snowboards behind, and smoking everywhere (all Japanese). Since there is no longer a theory of natural goodness, I think the management should make it clear in writing. The management of the parking lot is also poor, with instructions differing between the parking lot fee collection staff and the security guards, giving the impression that there is not even the bare minimum level of cooperation. I won't be going back because I felt it was unsafe in many ways. (Translated by Google) I used the bath in early October 2025. Register as a friend on LINE in advance and use a coupon to receive a ¥100 discount. There were 15 washing areas. Shampoo, body soap, and conditioner were provided. The bathroom had a large bathtub that could fit about 15 people, as well as a low-temperature bath the same size as a jacuzzi that could fit about 3 people. There was also an open-air bath and sauna outside. While it's technically an open-air bath, most of it is covered by a roof and walls, and the only views you can get from an opening at the top of the wall are of the surrounding tree branches and sky. For those expecting a sense of openness and a view from an open-air bath, this may be disappointing. Considering its location on a plateau, it was a bit disappointing. The spring water was light and unobtrusive, and the temperature wasn't too high, allowing for a relaxing soak. I found I could stay in the bath for a long time by warming up in the regular bath and cooling down in the low-temperature bath, repeating this cycle. (Translated by Google) We went for lunch. We arrived around 12 o'clock, but it was very busy and we were shown in about 40 minutes later. We had the tempura and cold soba (1,350 yen), and although the tempura was crispy and delicious, it didn't have much of a soba aroma and it was a little early for new soba. We didn't use the hot springs, but it was very crowded. There is a large campsite and you can park your car right next to it, so it seems like it would be easy to camp there. We also stopped by the shop, but it was mostly camping equipment and didn't seem geared towards tourists. Pizza restaurant
Pizzeria Makino offers a unique experience with its crispy and chewy dough, complemented by a delightful smoky aroma and the contrasting flavors of basil. The combination of slightly salty bacon, sweet corn, and fragrant cheese creates a perfect balance of tastes. Despite language limitations, the friendly chef engages in pleasant conversations with customers. Additionally, their hospitality is exceptional as they kindly provide rain ponchos when unexpected weather strikes. This restaurant surpasses even some hotels in terms of welcoming atmosphere.
Delicious pizza, with fresh ingredients. I was very surprised to find such great quality in this area. It was some of the best pizza I have had in Japan. Cute little restaurant with a lovely couple running it. If you are in the mood for Pizza, and are close by I definitely recommend checking them out.

We went to this Pizzeria on our weekend trip and it was totally worth it! There‘s not a lot of tables so we had to wait a bit, but the owners were very nice and tried their best to make us feel comfortable! Even though our Japanese is not very good they were not annoyed and helped us as best as they could. The husband speaks a bit English. The atmosphere is really nice and the pizza is selfmade in a little pizza oven and tastes amazing :) Cash only! Thank you for being so welcoming and the good food!

Great experience all around. Customer service was outstanding, they were okay with the language barrier and super friendly/accomodating. We ordered the margherita and the diabolo. Both were amazing. Good bang for the buck and we returned the next day for more 🤣

A sweet little shop ran by a couple that seems to be living the dream. Great price, excellent food, and delightful service. Enjoyed the pizzas, and the german sausage and fries and a huge serving. Cool looking pizza oven and the old man doing the cooking taught me a couple japanese words while i was looking at the oven. Absolutely recommend

Fast food restaurant
McDonald's Omi Imazu is a beloved fast-food destination that has stood the test of time, famous for its classic burgers and fries. Conveniently situated across from Heiwado in Imazu, this location offers a family-friendly atmosphere complete with play equipment for children. The restaurant maintains a clean environment, although the parking lot can be somewhat limited, making navigation tricky during busy drive-through hours.
Love the service and environment, the waiter was trying his best to serve me even he doesn’t speak English. The food was nice 👍🏻, the burger and shake was great!

Onyu Pass is a hidden gem nestled between Shiga and Fukui Prefectures, perfect for those seeking stunning natural beauty. If you're planning a visit in late October to early November, prepare for an unforgettable experience as the area transforms into a vibrant tapestry of autumn colors. The pass sits at an elevation of 820 meters, offering breathtaking views, especially when morning fog blankets the lower mountains.
Towards the end of Nov. A long drive up from osaka passing thru the mountains before reaching the top. Cold and windy but the view was exhilarating!

I have visited the Kuwanobashi Kasen Park campground three times and I plan to go again for more camping. The area is great for exploring and I have enjoyed myself there. The garbage segregation is well-maintained, with a nearby toilet and utensil washing area. The space is quite large, with everything being a short 5-10 minutes walk apart. The staff are very friendly and the neighborhood is pleasant.

Buddhist temple
Koseiji is a renowned temple in Kuchiki, known for its appearance in various historical and literary works. It holds significance from the Sengoku period, as it was a refuge for Yoshiteru Ashikaga during tumultuous times. The temple is also featured in Ryotaro Shiba's "Kosai no Michi," adding to its cultural importance. Koseiji is part of the Kansai Flower Temple Sacred Sites and is associated with camellias.
(Translated by Google) Visited on 2024/11/24. As of November 24th, the autumn leaves are just a little before their peak (judging from other people's previous posts about the autumn leaves, it seems like it will still be a while). Admission fee is ¥300. There seems to be no charge if you just visit the garden, but if you want to go inside to see the main hall or Buddhist statues, you will need to pay an admission fee. The people at the temple will give you explanations, and you can see some fine Buddhist statues, so I highly recommend you come and see them. Restrooms are also located within the building. Although it is a temple of the Soto sect, it was founded earlier than the main temple, Eiheiji, and it is said that Shogun Ashikaga once came there to escape the rebellion, and the garden was built for him at that time. It seems that the garden has been repaired in recent years, and the current condition is closest to its original condition. The garden is a borrowed landscape garden with a stone structure, river, and mountains in the background. Unfortunately, the weather that day was rainy, but we were still able to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Behind the shiny wooden boards, you can climb up a ladder and see the statue of Shakyamuni Nyorai (an important cultural property) up close. During the Muromachi period, the 12th Shogun Yoshiharu Ashikaga and the 13th Shogun Yoshiteru fled from a rebellion and relied on the Kuchiki clan to stay in this area, in other words, the administration was conducted here. As you walk around, you'll see what looks like earthworks and a moat...it looks like a castle protecting important people. If something happens, you can evacuate to Kyoto, and if an enemy comes, it's a good place to evacuate to the Sea of Japan side. It seems that there were mansions for people who accompanied the shogun, and some people called it the "Kuchiki Shogunate"... There is a beautiful garden. If you sit on a chair at Tsubakitei, a garden built for Shogun Yoshiharu, you will find gardens like this in Kyoto as well. The ruler, the Kuchiki clan, the Shogunate's Imperial Guard, and the protected generals must have felt at ease. I was crying in the taiga, but... Another point is that when Oda Nobunaga attacked Yoshikage Asakura in Fukui, Nagamasa Asai, who had formed an alliance with him, suddenly betrayed him and attacked him, and then he took refuge in Sabakaido. At that time, Mr. Kuchiki helps Nobunaga. It is said that he delivered it to Kyoto with an escort. In return...I saw that there were a lot of historical secrets like that. (Translated by Google) To get there by car from Hirakata City, take the Nishiotsu Bypass, get off at the Mano Interchange, head west on National Route 477, merge with National Route 367, and then just continue along the road. I used the Meishin Expressway on the way, but the road was not crowded and I was able to arrive from my home in about an hour and a half. The entrance to the temple is as you drive along National Route 367, and you will see a large signboard that says "Koshoji Temple" on your right, so turn off the national highway and enter the road diagonally to the left, but the parking lot entrance will be on your left immediately after entering. Please note that there is no charge for use. I can't see the white lines in the parking lot, so I can't count them, but it's quite large enough to accommodate about 10 cars. The day I visited was a public holiday in March, but perhaps because the weather was bad, I arrived around 11am and was the only car parked there. By the way, there were two more cars on the way home. I will post a photo of the arrival area. I think you can see the spacious parking lot from the photo. I think it took about 2 or 3 minutes to walk up the stairs from the parking lot, but it was a short walk to Koshoji Temple. While walking, I saw a sign saying that the entrance fee was 300 yen, so I rang the doorbell at the entrance of the temple, and a guide came out and showed me around the temple. The purpose of my visit was to see a garden associated with Shogun Ashikaga. I thought I had some prior knowledge of the garden as I had often seen it featured on TV, but I was very happy as I had never expected to be shown around the temple. I was the only visitor at this time, but he gave me a thorough explanation. From the history surrounding the temple, there are photos taken when former Prime Minister Hosokawa, a descendant of Fujitaka Hosokawa, who is said to have stayed at Koshoji Temple as a vassal of Yoshiteru Ashikaga, visited the temple, and the history of the temple being built as a family temple for the Sasaki family, a direct descendant of Udaten. There is a photo of Prince Akishino visiting Gakushuin when he was a high school student. The principal image of Buddha, a seated statue of Shakyamuni Nyorai (a nationally important cultural property), was worshiped by Fujiwara no Yorimichi when his nephew, Emperor Ichijo's son, passed away, as it was said to be one of the three Buddhas. It is said that Shibari Fudo Myoo was originally a Nenjibutsu of Masashige Kusunoki, but when Tokitsune Kuchiki attacked Chihaya Castle in present-day Osaka Prefecture at the end of the Kamakura period, he used it to avoid being exposed to military fire. For this reason, they have moved it to our temple for a festival. This Ming-o-o has also come to an end. As I gazed into the eyes of Masashige Kusunoki, who must have been seen praying to him many times, my thoughts wandered to the stage of Masashige Kusunoki's heroic history, and I felt somehow strange that we could still worship Fudo Myoo in this day and age. I think I got that feeling. Unfortunately it's raining outside the main hall. However, since there was a four-room tower, I was able to leisurely admire the garden from within the four-door tower, which was nice. There was a dead end around the garden, so I was able to appreciate it from a little distance, but I felt that it created a luxurious atmosphere, as it was built for the shogun's entertainment. Ta. According to the explanation at the temple, the 500-year-old camellia trees bloom beautifully, so I hope to be able to visit again in April before Golden Week. By the way, on the way back, there was a blizzard, and I had to drive in bad weather that I don't usually experience in Hirakata, where I live. On the way back, I didn't use the Nishiotsu Bypass and headed south on National Route 367, passing through Ohara in Kyoto City and heading home. The weather continued to be bad until we left Shiga, and although the roads were not covered in snow, I was worried about the tires slipping while driving. I was underestimating the weather in the mountains. I am reminding myself that I will be careful to choose a day with good weather the next time I visit.

It is one of the Kansai Flower Temple Sacred Sites, and the flower is the camellia, but there are almost no places that actively attract tourists, and the place quietly protects its history and accepts visitors kindly. A temple where you can visit. Iwajinkan was once located here, where Yoshiharu Ashikaga, the 12th shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, stayed to escape the war, and the garden is said to have been created by Kanrei Hosokawa Takakuni, an elegant man at the time, for the shogun, who left Miyako and went on to become a mute. has been done. Afterwards, the Kuchiki clan's family temple, Shurinji, was built in this area, and this garden came to be called the former Shurinji garden. Shurin-ji Temple was later moved, and Kosho-ji Temple came here later. In other words, it is often said about Koshoji that ``Zenji Dogen named it Koshoji because the scenery was too similar to Koshoji in Fushimi Fukakusa on his way down to Echizen Eiheiji''. , that means. By the way, there is a place on the internet that says, ``The scenery resembles the place where Koshoji Temple in Uji is'', but that is clearly incorrect. Koshoji Temple, built by Dogen Zenji, was located in Fushimi Fukakusa, but has since been abolished. Koshoji Temple, which is now located in Uji, was rebuilt in the Edo period by Nagai Naomasa, the lord of Yodo Castle. The parking lot is quite large. As you head north on the national highway on the right bank of the Azumigawa River, you will see a signboard on your left confirming the existence of a parking lot. If you climb the stairs from there, you will see a beautiful temple surrounded by greenery on the edge of the river terrace formed by the Azumigawa River. In front of the temple's modest gate are the graves of soldiers from this village who fought and died for their country, and you can see them calmly looking back at their hometown. When you enter the gate, the ``Old Shurinji Garden'' will be on your left. Unlike the well-maintained gardens of famous tourist temples in Kyoto and other places, this garden has a beauty that feels like it is integrated with nature. It's as if human hands and skills have blended into nature over time. When you apply for a visit at the reception desk on the right side of the main hall, the chief priest's wife will show you around the hall. The principal image of Buddha, the seated statue of Shakyamuni Nyorai, and the statue of Fudo Myoo enshrined in the Reishi Hall are masterpieces. You'll never get tired of seeing it, and you'll want to visit again and again. It was also no surprise that Crown Prince Akishino and the Hosokawa family, among others, had visited the temple when I was in junior high school. Kutsuki Snow Park is a great destination for families and beginners looking to practice skiing. Located near Osaka, it offers affordable options and a dedicated children's area for non-skiers to have fun on sleds. The slopes are well-maintained and suitable for both beginners and intermediate skiers. While the length of the season depends on natural snowfall, the staff are known for being warm and welcoming, creating a comfortable environment for visitors.

(Translated by Google) The best thing about this ski resort is that it's close to the parking lot and slopes, and it's cheap. However, when I came back for the first time in a while, the price had gone up a bit. In particular, the price difference between the morning ticket and the one-day ticket was only 500 yen, making the morning ticket relatively expensive. This is a painful price increase for seniors who only need half a day. Levels range from beginner to intermediate. There is also a dedicated children's area where they can play on sleds, so even children who cannot ski can have fun. Although the scale is small and the courses are short and few, it is a well-maintained compacted snow slope, so it is easy to slip. The food and facilities are new, clean, and easy to use. What's unfortunate is that the actual opening period is short, and maybe that can't be helped. For those who want to practice, we recommend that you buy a morning ticket from the opening time and just ski, eat lunch, and then go home. There's a parking lot nearby, so if you're used to it, you might be able to have lunch in your car. others: ① When the headwind is strong, the slope is small so you won't be able to speed up. ②Crossing the mountain pass on Route 295 is closed in winter. If you are coming from Osaka or Kyoto and it snows, it is better to take the road on the Lake Biwa side. The snow plows are working hard on No. 367, but it is surprisingly difficult early in the morning when there is still snow on the mountain pass. Those who are used to snowy roads should be fine. This assumes studless tires. Please carry a chain. It is dangerous to go to Kuchiki Ski Resort with only normal tires. ③You should take a bath in the affiliated hot springs and then go home. One-day tickets include hot springs. You can actually take a bath in a hot spring for 300 yen. ④The last 2km to the ski resort is a steep slope. In most cases, it's okay because they remove snow and spray antifreeze, but if it continues to snow until the early hours of the morning, there are times when the snow removal won't be done in time for the store to open. There are times when we can't open even though it's snowing. There are many things to do, but this is my favorite ski resort, and it has a lot of goodness that you can't find at larger ski resorts. It's more of a family ski slope. The runs are short, the snow isn't particularly abundant, and local FM radio is constantly blaring, but there aren't many customers, morning tickets cost 2,000 yen, and the relaxed atmosphere is pleasant. On weekdays, you can sometimes see the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force skiing training here alongside the general public. The dish made with local chicken, "tonchan," is delicious. The fried chicken is especially tasty!! The distance and time are just right for a quick morning outing on your own. From Osaka, it takes about two hours. Even if you leave at 1 PM, you can get back by around 3 PM if you're in the Osaka area. It's close, isn't it? There's also a hot spring called "Tenkuu" near the slope. Mt. Horai is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering stunning panoramic views of Lake Biwa. Visitors can access the mountaintop terraces via a ropeway and enjoy the scenic vistas while relaxing at the cafes and lounges. The mountain is known for hiking, birdwatching, and climbing, with a challenging route from Horai Station that takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to traverse. At an elevation of 1100m above sea level, Mt.
Scenery is especially good. You can feel the Lake Biwa's greatness. I often climb this mountain from Hourai station. I also like the view from a Kosei Line's train which run along Lake Biwa. I have never been to this mountain after cafe and other facility was builded. I want to go there again. Since the top altitude is almost 1,000 m, it is sometimes cold even in the summer. You should bring warm closes.

(Translated by Google) The Yakushi Hall enshrines a secret Buddha statue (Yakushi Nyorai) containing a fetal Buddha said to have been created by Saicho, the founder of Tendai Buddhism. It is revered for its blessings of safe childbirth and breastfeeding. It was apparently opened to the public for the first time in about 50 years. The Amida Hall, a National Treasure, is a building with a cypress bark roof and built in the Shinden-zukuri style. Many cypress bark buildings, such as the Amida Hall of Joruriji Temple, have been replaced with tiled roofs, but it is amazing that this large roof has been preserved. Also known as the Jogyo Hall, this is where contemplation nembutsu (prayer of the Buddha's image and merits) is performed to the principal image. Since this is Amida Nyorai, it represents the Western Pure Land. Since it is impossible to pray to the Western Pure Land, which one has never seen, it is notable that it is a concrete embodiment, and the Phoenix Hall of Byodoin Temple is the best example of this still standing. Saicho's theory of kenkai (pronunciation of the precepts) requires constant sitting (zazen) in winter and summer, and constant practice in spring and autumn. Perhaps he could have circled Amida Buddha for a total of six months? This makes me understand a little better why Shinran Shonin, who was born at this temple, advocated chanting the name of Amida Buddha. The National Treasure Amida Buddha Seated Statue by Jocho, which was popular at the time, is a little on the weak side, but is a muscular, athletic type. Hino Tomiko, a shogunate official who appears during the Onin War, is apparently a later name, and Fujiwara Tomiko is correct. Hokaiji Temple is the Hino family temple, but there's nothing particularly special about it. There's free parking for several cars. Take the bus (Route 8) from Rokujizo Station to Hino Yakushi. It's about a 20-minute walk from Ishida Station on the subway, or about a 30-minute walk from JR Rokujizo Station. The surrounding area is a newly developed residential area, so there are no souvenir shops or restaurants near the temple gate.

Nestled just off a prefectural road in the charming suburbs of Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, Casa di Kudos is a delightful spot that beckons pizza lovers from afar. With its stylish exterior and inviting interior, it offers a unique dining experience that feels both fun and comfortable. The terrace seating is particularly appealing, equipped with misting systems and coolers to keep guests refreshed while warding off pesky insects.
Such a gorgeous restaurant & garden! The pizza was large & so delicious. The salad was fresh & light, and I can’t wait to try the caprese salad next time. Thank you Kudos! We’ll see you again soon.

Great pizzas and desserts. I especially enjoyed tomatoes sauce based pizzas here. Very reasonable price at a hidden location.

(Translated by Google) I sat on the terrace with my baby and dog. We received dog pizza and water for free. I am grateful that you took good care of my baby. The terrace seats were also mostly indoors with mist, coolers, and fans to keep you cool and insects out, so it was a comfortable experience. I ordered 3 pizzas. Everything was delicious and I wanted to go there regularly if it wasn't far away. I came from Osaka, and the taste, customer service, and environment made me want to come again. There were other customers before and after me, so I thought I should definitely make a reservation.

(Translated by Google) The atmosphere of the restaurant is very good. It seems to be popular, and even when we came in the daytime on a weekday, several customers who came without reservations were told, "You will have to wait a long time, but if that's okay," and gave up and left. A customer who came right after us at 1pm was told, "We can't take your order for the set because there is only one salad left for the lunch set." The food itself wasn't bad, but it wasn't that good either. The salad in the set was normal, with only a few types of vegetables, and although it wasn't bad, it wasn't delicious either. I wish they had at least some dressing. Just salt, pepper, balsamic vinegar, and olive oil, which wasn't bad, but it wasn't delicious either. The dough of the pizza was normal, first of all. It wasn't particularly delicious. And even though it was baked in a pot in front of you, for some reason the center was lukewarm when it was served to the table. So by the time you eat the second piece of the pizza, it was already warm all over and completely cold. Cold pizza is the worst. The cheese used didn't have much flavor, and although it wasn't bad, it wasn't anything to praise either. The service seemed polite, but the way they treated the customers who came after us seemed a bit rude. To be honest, if you want to eat good pizza, I think there are plenty of other better restaurants in Takashima City. It's a nice restaurant, so I left hoping that they could improve a lot.

The stylish exterior makes me a little hesitant to enter alone as a scruffy middle-aged man. 🙄 But the interior looks fun too! 🤗! It was a weekday lunchtime, but there were two other groups ahead of me, one of them sitting on the terrace. I thought it would be hot, but they had heat-blocking curtains and spot coolers to keep the heat down, which was a plus! 👍! The garden is also worth seeing! 🪴🪻 The menu is extensive, and I don't really understand the terminology for the ingredients. 😁 So I ordered the "Pizza Bonnie Part 2" set and a "Sudachi Soda" based on their names alone. It's fun to watch your pizza bake in the stone oven right before your eyes. 🤗. It's hearty with plenty of cheese, and the texture of the sausage and broccoli is delightful. The sudachi soda was delicious with sliced citrus fruit in it 😋. Next time, I'd love to try some of their delicious looking sweets. 🍮

(Translated by Google) When I look for a destination for touring, I usually eat soba and go home, but this time I wanted to eat pizza, so I visited Casa di Kudos, which was just an hour and a half away from Kyoto city. Thank you for kindly guiding a strangely dressed man who had not made a reservation to a seat on the terrace. As others have written about the shop, I was impressed by the attention to detail in the furniture and was able to relax in the warm seats. For the food, we had spicy stew of offal from Antipasto, pizza margherita, and homemade ginger ale. First of all, the tripe was so good that I immediately wanted a glass of wine, and while I was grudging myself for coming by bike, I drank the ginger ale and it was so delicious lol. I ordered water with gas, but it was out of stock, so I made the right choice with madam's recommended ginger ale. As other people have written about, the Margherita is very delicious. Two types of cheese? The dough was delicious too. When I left the tripe for a while and ate the pizza while it was hot, the chef told me, ``It's delicious if you put tripe on the edges of the dough and eat it.'' I was just thinking that I wanted a baguette, but it was resolved lol. The atmosphere of the two of us matched perfectly with the atmosphere of the shop, and it was a very relaxing time. Thank you for the meal.

(Translated by Google) We've been here 3 or 4 times, and both my husband and I love the pizza here! They even offer dog-friendly pizza and water as a complimentary service. The service is friendly, and the restaurant and garden have a lovely, relaxing atmosphere. We love the Boni pizza series, but this time we ordered the tripe with offal for the first time. The offal was so tender and deliciously seasoned, it made us crave alcohol, lol. Everything, from the salad served with white balsamic olive oil and rock salt to the limited-edition caprese salad and drinks, is exquisite and carefully crafted.
