Shirahige Shrine is a serene Shinto shrine complex located in Shiga Prefecture, just north of Kyoto. One of its most striking features is the torii gate standing in the lake, offering picturesque water views. This shrine is often compared to the famous Great Torii Gate in Miyajima, Hiroshima. Visitors can also enjoy the stunning landscapes around Lake Biwa, including the renowned Metasequoia tree avenue and panoramic views from atop a nearby mountain.

Nestled in the northern part of Shiga, Kaizu Osaki is a breathtaking peninsula that offers stunning views of Lake Biwa and is renowned for its cherry blossoms. As one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, it boasts around 800 cherry trees lining a picturesque 4 km lakeshore. Typically blooming from early to mid-April, this location serves as an excellent alternative for those seeking late-season sakura experiences.
What a gem! We did pit stop at this place thru google map recommendation. A pleasant spot for fishing. Bring along your fishing rod, sit back n enjoy (i would do that given the opportunity!

Beautiful place to visit during cherry blossom season in early April. It’s in the north and cooler here so blossoms will bloom a little later than in Kyoto or southern Shiga. In summer there are still nice views and a good places for picnics and a little swimming. If you are driving you can continue on to the Oku Biwako Parkway which has spectacular views of Lake Biwa!
Steve B — Google review
Really beautiful. I am doing one full lap around Lake Biwa by bike and just stopped here. It’s April 30th and the scenery looks more like summer. Everything is very green. Definitely worth it.
Raphael A — Google review
Perfect place for sakura watching. If come by car, we have to go to the car park first and go to the Biwako by bus with 300¥ per people. If go by train, you have to take a bus, but it really far to go there by walking. You can see sakura by waking along the street, sakura was everywhere. It is wonderful time!! They have a small boat to look sakura from Biwako. Price: 1000¥/person for 15 minutes, safety and peaceful. It is perfect for watching sakura and watching Biwako, the heart of Shiga. Flower and lake, so romantic and peaceful. They have some small food under the sakura for traveller, bbq pork and noodle. There don't have a lot of tourist, just Japanese local people and some Chinese people. It is a quiet place for me and the people who don't like noisy and crowned tourist spots. The air is very clear, quiet, cold. Sakura full of blossom. I am lucky because sakura wait for me, and this far away from my place, about 1 hour and 45 minutes for driving. Center of Shiga was end of sakura season. I came here at 8April2018.

Spectacular cherry blossoms along the roadway and lake. Full bloom had passed. The hanafubuki was stunning.

beautiful little beach. there id a parking and bbq fee but bike parking and use of the beach are free. shallow water with big rocks to climb and shady trees to sit under.

Good place. We took ship from Hikone and have abt 40 mins to walk around here. Sufficient to explore. Otherwise traffic is not so convenient unless you drive by yourself.

Enryaku-ji Temple, a sprawling Tendai Buddhist monastery with a history dating back to the 7th century, offers a surreal and peaceful experience. Accessible by driving or taking the train to Sakamoto and then the Funicular up the mountain, this place is enveloped in tranquility with periodic ringing of the peace bell and misty clouds creating an otherworldly atmosphere.
Very nice quiet tourist destination away from busy Kyoto. Amazing view of Lake Biwa. Recommend coming in fall or Sakura season. Reminder to be quiet and respectful on Temple grounds. When going, recommend to take the cable car in Sakamoto(坂本), it is the longest cable car in Japan.

Visited this place during public holiday in September, 2025. One of the historical building/temple was undergoing restoration. Overall, had good experience visiting and witnessing Japans historical place.
Kaleem S — Google review
Visited in July recently. Reached here from Kyoto station with a train ride, then a bus, a cable car, a ropeway and finally a hike. It may sound overwhelming but journey itself is worth it and the destination is as good as Koyozumi-dera. The accessibility is definitely why there are not many tourists here This temple grounds is quite big. Unfortunately during our visit the main hall was under renovation. May just visit again if ever in Kyoto again.
Google L — Google review
From religious point of view: very important place and definitely worth it of you are interested in Japanese branch pf Buddhism and Japanese history and culture in general. General tourist point of view: there is really nothing special about it that would justify the entrance fee of 1000¥ + the cable or ropeway if you decide to take it for 1800¥ roundway. Any smaller temple in nature is just as beautiful. It really depends on what kind of tourist you are.
Finite T — Google review
We walked about 10 minutes from the cable car station to the temple. It was a clear and crisp day which made the short stroll really enjoyable. There is a loop bus that goes to the Heizan-Sakamoto JR station.

Enryakuji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Mount Hieizan, is a treasure trove of history, spirituality, and stunning natural beauty. As the birthplace of Japanese Tendai Buddhism, it holds immense cultural and religious significance. The temple complex is vast, with beautifully preserved buildings spread across serene forested grounds. Each area offers a unique glimpse into its rich history. The peaceful atmosphere is perfect for reflection, and the views of Lake Biwa from the mountain are breathtaking. Whether you’re interested in history, Buddhism, or simply seeking tranquility, Enryakuji Temple is a must-visit destination near Kyoto!
Gemi K — Google review
This temple is located on a truly sacred mountain. There aren’t many souvenir shops, food stalls, or entertainment spots nearby, but that’s exactly what keeps its spiritual atmosphere pure. It may not suit those looking for fun or sightseeing, but the peacefulness and lack of crowds make it even more special. For Buddhists, it’s without a doubt one of Japan’s true sacred places.

Nestled in the serene landscapes of Kyoto, Higashiyama Jisho-ji, also known as Ginkaku-ji or the Silver Pavilion, is a stunning 15th-century Zen temple that embodies Japan's rich cultural heritage. Originally constructed as a retirement villa for Shogun Yoshimasa Ashikaga during the tumultuous Muromachi period, this exquisite site was later transformed into a Buddhist temple after his passing.
Visiting Ginkaku-ji was an unforgettable experience. The temple is absolutely beautiful, with its elegant architecture and serene atmosphere. The gardens are breathtaking—perfectly designed with moss, pine trees, and the famous sand garden that creates such a peaceful and harmonious setting. Walking along the paths felt like stepping into a living painting. Every corner offered a new perspective of natural beauty and traditional Japanese aesthetics. The view from the hillside was especially stunning, giving a panoramic glimpse of Kyoto framed by nature. Ginkaku-ji is not just a historical site; it’s a place where you can truly feel tranquility and harmony. It’s the perfect spot to slow down, reflect, and enjoy the timeless beauty of Japan. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Kyoto.
Raouafi E — Google review
This temple is a gem. It is truly remarkable, beautiful, and inspiring. It is also near many other temples, so it is possible to go to various temples in the area. This one is excellent. The gardens are beautiful, to the point of being almost impossible to stop taking pictures. I feel like that is a reaction to wanting to soak it all in and keep it forever, and many fellow travelers were doing the same. It was raining some when I went and that honestly added to the atmosphere. The temple was very popular and there were many people out and about, but this did not impact my visit much. I would highly recommend a visit to this temple if you are in Kyoto.
Aracruz1988 — Google review
Beautiful temple that is a little bit hidden from the city, kind of on the side, which means that it is not wall to wall with modern buildings. There is some kind of peace in the temple, it is quiet, you don't here cars or noise from the city. Beautiful garden with those amazing specially made gardens with sand and rocks which are racked in a specific way. There are fish in ponds which makes children love this temple. Like in almost all museum, temples or tourist attractions, there are toilets available which are clean, they are situated close to the exit and gift shop.
Adam ( — Google review
As a tourist visiting Kyoto, Ginkaku-ji felt like a must see. The temple is a sight to behold and the gardens give a zen, warming feeling. The staff working tirelessly to maintain the garden and their effort is well appreciated. Washrooms are by the gift shop and the gift shop itself is pretty cute to visit for unique souvenirs. Weather is perfect is November for visiting if sunny out.
Nelson M — Google review
Ginkaku-ji in Kyoto is a serene gem. I truly loved the stone garden, so unique and calming. I would have loved to spend an entire day there just meditating. There’s also a spot nearby where you can try a traditional vegetarian tofu dish (2000¥), and it was delicious. Once again, go early in the morning, later in the day the entire place is packed with tourists!
Aishola A — Google review
This place is less known compared to Kinkaku-ji Golden Pavilion. The building is very similar in shape but less elegant in wooden and white. Visitors can walk around to enjoy the garden. Since it is not very far from the city, one may walk from Kiyomizu-dera via Yasaka Shrine and Heian Shrine.
Thanathip M — Google review
Ginkaku-ji was honestly a bit underwhelming for me. There’s a small garden and a small temple, and that’s pretty much it. It might be more meaningful if you’re really into Japanese history or architecture, but as a general visitor, I didn’t find anything particularly special. Nice to see once, but not something I’d go out of my way for.
E K — Google review
A place of stunning beauty the like of which I have never seen before. This is Japan as I have imagined it before travelling here. The temple is especially beautiful in autumn with the colouring of the leaves. I am truly grateful for having experienced this sacred place.

Kōdaiji Temple is a serene Buddhist temple in Japan, known for its beautiful gardens, tea houses, and seasonal light festivals. It's dedicated to the historic hero Toyotomi Hideyoshi and features a mausoleum with wooden statues of Toyotomi and his wife, Nene. The garden, designed by landscape architect Kobori Enshu, includes a strolling pond garden and a rock garden.
A lovely temple with several buildings over a spacious garden. It’s very popular with many tourists: I saw three buses in the parking lot, but it’s spacious enough that it didn’t feel crowded. It’s on a slight hill so you can go up stairs and paths up into slight wooded areas. There is a small bamboo thicket that you can pass through to get the feeling of a bamboo forest. One of the buildings requires removing your shoes to explore. There is another building where you can sit & take some tea for an extra fee. I explored this place alone, and enjoyed it a lot. It was verdant and the air was refreshing. This is one of those destinations where people take photos in their rented kimono outfits, which seemed odd to me. As a western female redhead it would never occur to me to do that but there were lots who did. There are several rental shops nearby. I took a city bus to get to the temple which was easy and inexpensive.
April W — Google review
I visited this temple on another rain soaked morning. It has been drizzling since breakfast and in spite of that, many tourists like us was undeterred and pressed on! We bought tickets at the front counter and explored the grounds. The buildings and surroundings were well kept and neat. There were clear signs to guide us along the path. Some paths may be slippery because of the rain so caution is advised. The compound is beautiful and you can almost feel the history when you step into the old temple and feel the original woodwork. There is a tea house inside as well as quaint cafes outside so if you feel peckish, there are nice, quite places to stop and replenish and rest.
Gevs — Google review
Beautiful light illumination experience! The main illumination show was excellent — vibrant lights, great sound, and an engaging story that I wanted to watch again, though it was a bit short (around 5 minutes). The temple grounds themselves are calm and pleasant to walk around at night. The lighting on the trees is nice, though not particularly special. There’s also a small bamboo garden which adds to the atmosphere. Be careful while walking: many paths have stone steps that can be slippery. There’s no stamp available on your own booklet. Instead, they sell a pre-stamped temple paper for 500 yen. Evening illumination entrance ticket is 600 yen per person.
Cindee — Google review
Going to this temple at night whenever they have their special ligh show and illumination is a wondrous experience. It is just so gorgeous. The light show is nice and fun, but the best part are the trees reflecting on the lake, all illuminated, and simply gorgeous. The fact it was fall and they had all these different pretty colors made it all even better. I have been to this temple both during the day and at night, and I found the night experience even more memorable. I would very much recommend going whenever they have their temple illuminated.

Kōdai-ji is such a peaceful and beautiful temple to visit in Kyoto. The gardens are stunning — especially with the reflection ponds and bamboo grove that give off a calm, relaxing vibe. The temple buildings are elegant, and the pathways are well kept. If you visit in the evening, the light-up display makes it even more magical. It’s not as crowded as some other Kyoto spots, so it feels more relaxing and personal. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy nature, history, and quiet moments.
Rheden E — Google review
Beautiful temple in the Higashiyama area. The garden is absolutely beautiful, especially during Koyo (autumn) when the leaves are changing colors. The bamboo forest is incredible too, and if you don’t want to go all the way to Arashiyama (or don’t have time), this place is a great option to visit. Also wasn’t too busy, even for late October.
Adam S — Google review
This was GORGEOUS!!!! It was amazing to see everything lit up at night and the fall colors, wow!!! They had a light show of the history with music that just lit up the the temple grounds. It was phenomenal!! This is a must see!!! The pictures don't do it justice! You just can't capture the magic and the beauty here!

A truly charming temple with beautifully landscaped gardens, quiet walking paths, and a lovely bamboo grove. Kodaiji has a peaceful vibe that makes it stand out from the busier temples in Kyoto. The Avenue of Metasequoia trees is a stunningly picturesque road that stretches for about 2.4 kilometers, flanked by approximately 500 majestic metasequoia trees. Autumn brings a breathtaking golden hue to the foliage, making it an ideal time for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Amazing place to visit! Went during the end of winter, 7 Mar 2025. Judging from other's reviews, you will have to visit this place in different seasons for another experience, so chose your season wisely if you have limited time to travel haha! Those who drive, there are no parkings along the stretch of roads, the closest will be the small town up north or down south.

The Metasequoia Tree-lined Road in Makino, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, is a breathtaking sight. This picturesque road boasts approximately 500 towering metasequoia trees lining both sides for about 2.4 kilometers. Here's what makes it special: Seasonal Beauty: The trees offer stunning visuals throughout the year: Spring: Fresh, vibrant green leaves emerge. Summer: Lush green foliage creates a cool, refreshing canopy. Autumn: The leaves transform into a vibrant display of golden and reddish-brown hues. Winter: The bare trees create a dramatic, snow-covered landscape. Photogenic: The road is incredibly photogenic, making it a popular spot for photographers and social media enthusiasts. Peaceful Atmosphere: The towering trees and the straight road create a sense of tranquility and awe. Easy Access: The road is easily accessible by car, making it a popular driving route.

We visit at least once each season and love this place! Still trying to catch it in the snow and hoping for a chance this winter. The walkway along the row of trees is lovely. Go early and on a weekday to avoid crowds.

Breathtaking row of trees along this quiet road that changes greatly with the seasons. A verdant green in summer, but I'd come back just to see it in autumn as well. There's a reasonably large parking lot which the signage will direct you to. There are also various shops and restaurants along the road and in the vicinity. Despite being a road, it's not super busy so it's possible to take photos with no other people or vehicles with a bit of patience. Most people also tend to gather around the carpark entrance, but you can walk further down for a more quiet experience.

went last February 8,2025 around 5pm a snowy day as you can see... less people and cars, we don't have to wait for the road to be empty 😉

MetaSequoia Trees Avenue This street is a pretty stretch and very instagrammable place. We however made a mistake by keeping it for the weekend.  It was swarmed with visitors both local and foreigners.  This make taking photos very challenging. Visitors walked along the street blemishing the views and heaps of cars/bikes zooming through the street.  It was near to impossible to take a picture without some random person in it. But what was interesting is the surrounding areas.  First, within the car park compound area, there is a small hall that houses a market that sells local produce, fruits and veg.  There is also some food within this hall for you to dine in.  And just outside of this hall, there are other push carts or pop-up stores that sells pizzas, drinks, and other finger foods. It have it a carnival feel, but this could be only for the weekend. Then, just outside of this area, there are small eateries and shops spotted all over the surrounding areas if you care to walk or drive around.  Nice place to visit.  But maybe weekdays. I believe that on a quiet n peaceful weekend over the height of the autumn season, this place would be worth every minute to visit.

Enkōji Temple is a Buddhist temple complex in Kyoto known for its stunning panoramic views, well-maintained gardens, and lush surroundings. It is the second most visited attraction in Kyoto and is famous for its Golden Pavilion, covered in gold leaf and resting on a large pond. The temple's gardens are also accessible to visitors, offering a serene and picturesque experience.
Maybe my favorite temple and garden I’ve been to in Kyoto. Just far enough from the famous spots that you will have it mostly to yourself (esp. not in high season). But not so far that you’ll exhaust yourself getting there. It has 2 or 3 gardens, depending on how you divide it: a stunning dry rock garden near the entrance, a moss garden inside, and a bamboo grove directly bordering the moss area (no barrier, thus it could be seen as one unit). You can walk through all of them. The temple is also gorgeous and has many areas where you can sit and gaze for as long as you’d like. I paid ¥800 on March 18th, 2025. It looks like prices may be a bit higher in high seasons such as cherry blossoms or fall colors.

Gorgeous temple with a call Zen garden, forest walkways, and mountainside views. Fantastic historical pieces and art on display inside. As a tourist, I did not perceive this as a place advertised as a Kyoto must-see. After attending, I think it is. It's not too far from nearby hiking and running trails. Entry fee was 800 yen. It is a very peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the busier parts of Kyoto

This was a beautiful little temple! We had a very nice visit! We nearly had the whole place to ourselves. The garden was so lovely, I could have sat there and listened to the cicadas sing for hours! It was well worth a visit!

This wonderful temple was suggested to us by an AI inquiry. We visited about 10am after a visit to the Golden Temple which was crowded with school groups. By contrast we almost had this place to ourselves and it was so beautiful, tranquil, and spiritual. The gardens especially are stunning.

Amazing place! Really peaceful, quiet. Beautiful garden and view, bamboo forest. Highly recommended to go here instead of overcrowded places in Kyoto city center

I was impressed about the stone garden and backyard green garden. Please go through the gate over the stone garden. I could sit down on the floor like zazen about 30 minutes or more. Trees and green are beautiful. And also we can see Kyoto city because here is in the mountain. It takes about 15 minutes from Shirakawa street on foot. ☆

Hiyoshi Taisha, located in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, is a serene shrine complex set amidst lush grounds with trees, bridges and a flowing stream. It is also known as Yamanote Shrine and holds historical significance dating back to the 8th century. The shrine's buildings were reconstructed in the late 16th century after being destroyed by war in 1571.
Quiet shrine at a much less touristy area to enjoy autumn leaves. Plenty of walking space and very clean toilets. Definitely a place to visit if you are into Shinto shrine and autumn colours. Y$500 to enter.

Went there as Hinatazaka46 made a trip there for their hit campaign. Grounds were large and a bit confusing. Made up my mind to climb to see the big rock (金大嚴)up on the hill and oh boy was it tough. I rushed through it in around 20 minutes as it was turning dark. Respect to the members who climbed it after dragonboating.

Really peaceful and serene shrine. Shiga is definitely an excellent spot to escape from the crowds in Kyoto. This place is good for all seasons and the autumn colours just made it that much better for viewing pleasure! There was also a free night illumination that makes this such a must see spot !
Henry C — Google review
Hiyoshi Taisha, located in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, is a Shinto shrine with a rich history dating back over 2,000 years. Founded during the reign of Emperor Sujin, it has served as a sacred site dedicated to the deity Hiyoshi Okami, associated with water and agriculture. The shrine gained prominence during the Heian period and became closely linked to the powerful Minamoto and Taira clans. Hiyoshi Taisha is unique for its syncretic worship of Shinto and Buddhism, exemplified by its connection to the nearby Enryaku-ji, a prominent Buddhist temple on Mount Hiei. The annual Sanno Matsuri festival, held in June, is a highlight, attracting visitors with vibrant processions and traditional performances. Throughout centuries, the shrine has undergone reconstruction due to natural disasters and conflicts. Today, it stands as a cultural and historical treasure, reflecting Japan's enduring spiritual traditions and the integration of Shinto and Buddhist influences.
Divertimento — Google review
Hiyoshi Taisha is an old Japanese shrine, and it has a forest-style yard and garden which has numerous old, tall trees for more than several hundred years. In addition, the visitors can see the clean flow of water circulating or flowing through various temples in the Shrine area. But the Shrine may be in crisis probably due to insufficient fund for the maintenance and repair. For example, most of the tree-bark roofs of the Shrine's worshiping temples are in damaging conditions. Also, a few lion-shaped Guards in front of the worshipping shrines or temples are also in damaged condition. Visitors who are interested in the Shrine can take the same Keihan commuter train to visit Ishiyama-dera Temple of the Otsu area. Alos, there are various other smaller temples outside Hiyoshi Taisha, between subway station and Shrine's main gate.

Relaxing sightseeing cruise around the south end of the lake. Has options which include meals on the cruise but we went for the normal ticket. Good way to see the shores of the lake. Cruise ship is very smooth sailing

This cruise does a small or larger circuit on the lake depending on your selection of time. 30, 60 or 90 minutes. You get a good view of buildings and other structures near the lake. It is very close to the train station.

Cool ship with a nice view around Biwa lake. Snacks and drinks are served onboard for a price. The entertainers are nice and have a singing 20min performance at the end. Be advised, everything is japanese only. That being said, you can still enjoy it even if you don't understand. The sky deck is too bright on the night cruise.

This is a 1 hour worth it trip if you want to see some hilights of OTSU. It's a 1 hour cruise that will show you views of lake Biwa. There are 4 restaurants to choose from and a buffet options you can try. Staff and hosts are really friendly and make sure you have a great time. The ride starts with 3000 yen onwards if you want to add food option there are other choices too. Wonderful experience in Otsu. It's a 20min walk from the station.

I did the one hour cruise at 15:00. It was a nice little cruise to enjoy the fresh air and the view of the nearby hills. The ship is very beautiful and in a good condition. You can buy drinks and snacks on board. There are also restrooms.

While the cruise itself was enjoyable around Lake Biwa, the buffet addition was not worth it. For the price, it was really disappointing. The food was not very fresh and they did not refill any of the trays so I didnt even get to try several of the meat options. We also went on Halloween, so 90% of the choices were all pumpkin dishes, if we had known that before hand we would have declined the buffet.

HOGONJI is a captivating Buddhist temple located in the picturesque Shiga region, surrounded by lush forests and offering stunning views of Lake Biwa. This serene sanctuary embodies traditional Japanese aesthetics, with its ancient trees and beautifully curated gardens that invite visitors to immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature. Accessible via a scenic ferry ride, HOGONJI sits atop a small hill on an island, making it an enchanting destination for those seeking peace and reflection.
On this amazing island, I witnessed a dazzling array of lakeside vistas including beautifully elegant shrines and temples. I highly recommend going here. There are several stone staircases with quite a few steps so make sure that you have plenty of water, and are in reasonable shape to hike here. I have been to a great many islands, and shrines since living in Japan, but in my humble opinion this ranks very highly on my list.

Although best visited during spring and autumn due to its seasonal beauty, Kaju-ji also offers winter blooming Sakura and early blooming Kawazu in March. Spring is the best time to visit this slightly out of the way temple. The garden is unusual as it is a stroll-thru, as opposed to most other temple gardens which are made for viewing only. There is a pond too and a whole load of cherry trees which you are able to enjoy without the inevitable crowds biting at your heels. All in all a good experience but I'm not sure if it's worth a visit outside the Spring and Autumn seasons.

The Biwako Kodomo-no Kuni park offers a wide array of child-oriented activities, such as climbing, crafting and free play. It is an ideal family destination with numerous indoor and outdoor playgrounds, as well as a small restaurant to cater for visitors who do not bring their own food. A huge park facility with a wide variety of playgrounds available for all ages of children. And it’s free!!! Bring a tent if you visit here because you will spend the whole day there. They also offer several paid activities, including an indoor playground and bike rides around the park. It’s recommended to bring your own food and drink because no supermarket/kombini nearby, but they have restaurant inside the building. At the back it is connected to Lake Biwa, and we can play by the lake. Totally recommend to visit this park. *Ps: if you plan to visit by public transportation, please check the bus schedule from Adogawa Station to this park beforehand because the schedule is quite infrequent, and come as early as possible to reserve a tent spot under big trees.

We arrived at 9:10am on a Tuesday in May. All boom gates to the car park were down and unattended. We parked nearby and walked through the car park into the playground. There was no one else here, so had the place to ourselves. Our 14 & 15 year olds had the best time, even saying "this is the best playground we've ever been to!". They were very keen to use the drop slide and the rest of the older kid equipment, but it was all ropped off. Toilets were clean and well stocked. We didn't try the restaurant, because it looked closed and unattended. It was a bit eerie being the only ones here, but we had a great time with lots of old school play equipment. Recommended!

Very beginner friendly and nice place to start your ski journey! Many locals as well. They have private lessons and the instructor Kaoru san was so patient and helpful in teaching me the basics of skiing. There were 3/4 slopes in total that you can choose from - all relatively doable and a good practice resort to get better at skiing. Everything is available for rental. It was my second time skiing in Japan and this experience was not as great as the ones at another ski resort. We had booked a package for this resort via Klook. On the day, there was only 1 lift and 2 slopes (1 was a beginner one for practicing), luckily there were not too many people so it wasn’t too crowded. Change rooms & coin lockers were inconvenient as the area to change was extremely small, and it cost ¥300 to open each time. Keep ¥100 coins if you plan to use the lockers! The ski pants rented were not water resistant as you’d expect. Unfortunately when we went (31 Dec), it wasn’t cold enough for this resort to have snow so we had man made ice. We were told by the guide that there would be snow later in Jan.

It’s a nice little resting spot with toilets, a place to sit, and a gorgeous view of Lake Biwa—you can even stroll along the lakeside. Historically, this is where Akechi Mitsuhide built his castle after betraying Oda Nobunaga in the Honnō-ji Incident. They even have a monument dedicated to him.
Google review
(Translated by Google) Sakamoto Castle Ruins Park was developed on the site of Sakamoto Castle (a nationally designated historic site) on the shores of Lake Biwa, along National Route 161 in Shimosakamoto, Otsu City, about 1.7 km south of JR Hieizan Sakamoto Station. In 1571, shortly after Oda Nobunaga burned down Enryaku-ji Temple with 30,000 soldiers, Oda Nobunaga (1534-1582) constructed Sakamoto Castle on the shores of Lake Biwa, ordering his vassal Akechi Mitsuhide (1528-1582) to watch over Enryaku-ji Temple and rule the Shiga County area at the foot of the mountain. Sakamoto Castle's first distinctive feature is its "water castle" style, in which water from Lake Biwa is brought into the castle grounds. Mitsuhide's tea ceremony teacher, Tsuda Sogyu of Sakai, Osaka, was invited to Sakamoto Castle and held a tea ceremony there. He wrote, "After the ceremony, we boarded a royal boat from the castle and headed to Azuchi Castle." Sakamoto Castle was a magnificent fortress with towering main and small main towers. Luis Frois, who was in Japan as a Jesuit missionary at the time, said, "The castle built by Akechi is magnificent and magnificent, second only to Nobunaga's Azuchi Castle." Construction of Sakamoto Castle began four years earlier than Azuchi Castle, making it a pioneering example of modern castles. Mitsuhide used Sakamoto Castle as his base and worked hard to pacify Omi under Nobunaga's orders, but in 1582 (Tensho 10), he led a rebellion and killed Oda Nobunaga and his son in the Honnoji Incident. However, Akechi Mitsuhide was killed in the Battle of Yamazaki, in which Hashiba Hideyoshi avenged his lord, and Sakamoto Castle fell just 10 years after it was built. After Sakamoto Castle fell, the late Nobunaga's senior vassals gathered at Owari Kiyosu Castle to divide Nobunaga's territory, a process known as chigyowari. Niwa Nagahide, who ruled the two counties of Shiga and Takashima in Omi, became the lord of Sakamoto Castle, while Hashiba Hideyoshi retained control of Yamashiro. At this so-called "Kiyosu Conference," many voices called for Hideyoshi to be made lord of Sakamoto Castle, but it is said that Hideyoshi handed it over to Niwa Nagahide, believing that "holding Sakamoto Castle would suggest he had ambitions to rule the country." This may have been because Sakamoto Castle was located at Imamichigoe, a key transportation point to Kyoto. In 1583, after Hideyoshi defeated Shibata Katsuie at Echizen Kitanosho, Nagahide was given Echizen, Wakasa, and the Kaga Peninsula, while Sakamoto Castle was taken over by Hideyoshi's vassal, Sugihara Ietsugu. However, rumors of Ietsugu's madness spread, and the castle was passed to Asano Nagayoshi, who had been given Seta Castle in the previous territorial division. After permission was granted to rebuild Enryaku-ji Temple's main gate in 1584, Sakamoto Castle no longer served as a watchdog for Enryaku-ji Temple. Furthermore, with Hideyoshi's construction of Osaka Castle, Otsu's importance in connecting the Hokuriku region with Osaka via land and water transport on the Tokaido and Yodo River increased, and Sakamoto Castle's historical role was handed over to Otsu Castle. After Sakamoto Castle was abandoned, the ruins were developed into farmland and residential areas. While it was a famous castle, its location and scale remain unknown, and it has become a mythical castle. Within the park, in a place thought to be within the castle grounds, stands the Akechizuka, said to be a memorial mound for Mitsuhide. Furthermore, during times of drought in Lake Biwa, the stone walls beneath the lake become visible, but are normally not visible.

Beautiful shrine to visit if you’re near the area. Being next to Lake Biwa makes it a bit more unique than other shrines around. Very scenic although usually also very windy in April. Fishing is prohibited.

this shrine is small but beautiful. its easy to get to from karasaki station and is right on the edge of one of japans most beautiful lakes — biwako. you cannot picnic on the grounds or anything like that but you can wander and enjoy the lake views. they do have goshuincho if youre into that, but no calligrapher on site.

It's a very simple shrine, but the view of Lake Biwa is great. There was a giant tree as the center piece of the shrine's park area, but it was blown down by a hurricane. There are a few benches that look out over the lake, so you can relax. If it's really windy, and in the fall or winter, it may be quite cold. There is also a very nice dango shop right in front of the shrine.

Karasaki Shrine : Karasaki Shrine is located in north part of Otsu City along the shore of Lake Biwa. The shrine has a strong connection with neighboring Hiyoshi Shrine located in the west on the foot of mountain. It is believed that the original form of shrine was established in here in 7th century. There is a gigantic pine tree planted in the ground widely spreading out its branches. It is interesting to know the fact that the same tree had been depicted in drawings of ancient times around 16th century. From the side of the shore which is a part of the precincts of the shrine you can see a nice view of the lake. This view from the shore is designated as one of the eight scenic sights of the lake in Omi region. There is an annual event called Mitarashi Festival held in this shrine at the end of July. The guide was also very kind, teaching us about birds and adjusting the telescope to the birds. Kindergarten and 2nd grade children were watching wild birds and looking at bird books without getting bored and found themselves staying for more than two hours. The time is relaxing and it's a great place for bird lovers. The cafe was not open, but I would like to try it again. It is quite intriguing to witness this sight immediately upon disembarking from the train. In close proximity to this magnificent Omi-Takashima Gulliver Monument stands a Torii gate submerged in water. This sculpture portrays an awe-inspiring representation of Gulliver, emphasizing his immense size and stature. The monument serves as a captivating tribute, showcasing the artistic prowess of its creators. Adjacent to it lies the Torii gate, symbolizing traditional Japanese culture and spirituality.
There's a seasonal campground nearby in the mountains called Gulliver Village so Yahoos made this monument in front of JR Omi-Takashima station. JAPAN is the only real place Lemuel Gulliver visited on his travels into several remote nations of the world. However, there's no mention of camping in Omi (Shiga).

However, when I came back for the first time in a while, the price had gone up a bit. In particular, the price difference between the morning ticket and the one-day ticket was only 500 yen, making the morning ticket relatively expensive. This is a painful price increase for seniors who only need half a day.

Levels range from beginner to intermediate. There is also a dedicated children's area where they can play on sleds, so even children who cannot ski can have fun. Although the scale is small and the courses are short and few, it is a well-maintained compacted snow slope, so it is easy to slip. The food and facilities are new, clean, and easy to use. What's unfortunate is that the actual opening period is short, and maybe that can't be helped. For those who want to practice, we recommend that you buy a morning ticket from the opening time and just ski, eat lunch, and then go home. There's a parking lot nearby, so if you're used to it, you might be able to have lunch in your car. others: ① When the headwind is strong, the slope is small so you won't be able to speed up. ②Crossing the mountain pass on Route 295 is closed in winter. If you are coming from Osaka or Kyoto and it snows, it is better to take the road on the Lake Biwa side. The snow plows are working hard on No. 367, but it is surprisingly difficult early in the morning when there is still snow on the mountain pass. Those who are used to snowy roads should be fine. This assumes studless tires. Please carry a chain. It is dangerous to go to Kuchiki Ski Resort with only normal tires. ③You should take a bath in the affiliated hot springs and then go home. One-day tickets include hot springs. You can actually take a bath in a hot spring for 300 yen. ④The last 2km to the ski resort is a steep slope. In most cases, it's okay because they remove snow and spray antifreeze, but if it continues to snow until the early hours of the morning, there are times when the snow removal won't be done in time for the store to open. There are times when we can't open even though it's snowing. There are many things to do, but this is my favorite ski resort, and it has a lot of goodness that you can't find at larger ski resorts.

(Translated by Google) This is a small ski slope in Takashima City in the Kosai region of Shiga Prefecture. It's fairly obscure, and many people probably don't know about it. It's more of a family ski slope. The runs are short, the snow isn't particularly abundant, and local FM radio is constantly blaring, but there aren't many customers, morning tickets cost 2,000 yen, and the relaxed atmosphere is pleasant. On weekdays, you can sometimes see the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force skiing training here alongside the general public. The dish made with local chicken, "tonchan," is delicious. The fried chicken is especially tasty!! The distance and time are just right for a quick morning outing on your own. From Osaka, it takes about two hours. Even if you leave at 1 PM, you can get back by around 3 PM if you're in the Osaka area. It's close, isn't it? There's also a hot spring called "Tenkuu" near the slope. It's probably crowded on weekends, but it's less crowded on weekdays, and I think it's a good slope for warming up your legs or practicing with a specific theme.

Katsurahama-enchi Park is a picturesque destination nestled alongside the stunning Lake Biwa, renowned for its breathtaking views and vibrant red spider lilies that bloom across vast stretches. While there are limited parking options available, visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere as they stroll through the park, often accompanied by their furry friends. The best time to witness these flowers in full glory is early in the season; however, some may start to wither later on.
We go here every year in early October to see the Higanbana in bloom. Absolutely lovely and well maintained park. The views of the lake from the beach are also stunning.

The flowers bloom very beautifully, perhaps the best time is earlier, then fewer flowers, later, then the flowers wither. Some of the flowers have withered. Many people come to walk their dogs. Super adorable. Saw 2 cosplayers taking pictures. Also had a Japanese man take pictures. It seemed very approachable and I gave him some candy in return. It's a pity that I can't receive files of those pictures. If you have a camera to take photos, it costs 100 VND💯 It takes quite a while to get from the station to this location. Cars and motorbikes are the right choice. There are restrooms and parking. Ladies, please pay attention that the women's restroom does not have paper 🤣 (Original) Mình đến đây vào 5-10-2024 . Stopped in early in the morning in mid-November. Perhaps because it was off-season, the parking lot, which could accommodate about 20 cars, was free (during the season, there was a charge?). Across the prefectural road is Hamabunuma, and between the prefectural road and the beach is a pine forest. There were several shops lined up, including boat rentals and coffee shops, but perhaps because it was off-season or because it was early in the morning, they weren't open, and at first glance it looked like an abandoned building. ← Excuse me Well, I guess it's lively in the summer... The beach is not sand but coarse gravel. The waves were calm and the water quality was clean. Looking out over Lake Biwa, I could see the Sugaura Peninsula, Tsuzura Ozaki, Kaizu Osaki, and Chikubu Island, creating a spectacular view of Sumbara. If the sky is clear, you can even see Mt. Ibuki behind Chikubu Island. We have been here in April 2023 and the staff was very helpful especially the lady that gave us a detailed explanation and walkthrough of the Sage of Omi. It was a weekday and no other visitors therefore we were the only foreigners there, despite the language barrier, we see that the lady have tried her best to explain in simple Japanese and her attitude was also very professional and kind. Would definitely recommend visitors to pay here a visit and it takes about an hour at the museum and probably another if you're willing to visist other facilities inside.

In 1905, the Imperial Household Agency identified it as the tomb of King Hikoshu, the father of King Keitai, and designated it, along with the three tombs to the south, as a reference site for the mausoleum. It is located at the tip of a hill called Taisanjino, and from the top you can see a panoramic view of Takashima City. Around 40 small tombs are gathered around this area, and are called the Tanaka Mounds. Based on the Sue ware and clay clay that were collected, it is thought to be a group of tumuli dating back to the latter half of the 5th century, with the Tanaka-Ozuka tumulus being the main tumulus, and the smaller tumuli being the baichō. (Translated by Google) In conclusion, this is the lowest rating of 1 star. The division between skiing/snowboarding and sledding/snow play areas is not clearly defined, and there are cases of illegal activities such as skiers/snowboarders crossing the sledding area, or conversely, sledding families (inbound) climbing the ski/snowboard lift slopes. It has become a zone. There are also rest houses and ticket offices. There are no rules or manners, such as people ignoring the flow of traffic in front of the building, leaving chairs and snowboards behind, and smoking everywhere (all Japanese). Since there is no longer a theory of natural goodness, I think the management should make it clear in writing. The management of the parking lot is also poor, with instructions differing between the parking lot fee collection staff and the security guards, giving the impression that there is not even the bare minimum level of cooperation. I won't be going back because I felt it was unsafe in many ways. [Cons] - The soil was clayey, so the area in front of the stage was a mess, and people would slip and lose their belongings, which would get buried and lost. - The nearest hot spring was about 10km away. - During the off-season, restaurants and other facilities were closed, making the area feel like an isolated island. Koseiji is a renowned temple in Kuchiki, known for its appearance in various historical and literary works. It holds significance from the Sengoku period, as it was a refuge for Yoshiteru Ashikaga during tumultuous times. The temple is also featured in Ryotaro Shiba's "Kosai no Michi," adding to its cultural importance. Koseiji is part of the Kansai Flower Temple Sacred Sites and is associated with camellias.
(Translated by Google) Visited on 2024/11/24. As of November 24th, the autumn leaves are just a little before their peak (judging from other people's previous posts about the autumn leaves, it seems like it will still be a while). Admission fee is ¥300. There seems to be no charge if you just visit the garden, but if you want to go inside to see the main hall or Buddhist statues, you will need to pay an admission fee. The people at the temple will give you explanations, and you can see some fine Buddhist statues, so I highly recommend you come and see them. Restrooms are also located within the building. Although it is a temple of the Soto sect, it was founded earlier than the main temple, Eiheiji, and it is said that Shogun Ashikaga once came there to escape the rebellion, and the garden was built for him at that time. It seems that the garden has been repaired in recent years, and the current condition is closest to its original condition. The garden is a borrowed landscape garden with a stone structure, river, and mountains in the background. Unfortunately, the weather that day was rainy, but we were still able to enjoy the beautiful scenery. (Translated by Google) To get there by car from Hirakata City, take the Nishiotsu Bypass, get off at the Mano Interchange, head west on National Route 477, merge with National Route 367, and then just continue along the road. I used the Meishin Expressway on the way, but the road was not crowded and I was able to arrive from my home in about an hour and a half. The entrance to the temple is as you drive along National Route 367, and you will see a large signboard that says "Koshoji Temple" on your right, so turn off the national highway and enter the road diagonally to the left, but the parking lot entrance will be on your left immediately after entering. Please note that there is no charge for use. I can't see the white lines in the parking lot, so I can't count them, but it's quite large enough to accommodate about 10 cars. The day I visited was a public holiday in March, but perhaps because the weather was bad, I arrived around 11am and was the only car parked there. By the way, there were two more cars on the way home. I will post a photo of the arrival area. I think you can see the spacious parking lot from the photo. I think it took about 2 or 3 minutes to walk up the stairs from the parking lot, but it was a short walk to Koshoji Temple. While walking, I saw a sign saying that the entrance fee was 300 yen, so I rang the doorbell at the entrance of the temple, and a guide came out and showed me around the temple. The purpose of my visit was to see a garden associated with Shogun Ashikaga. I thought I had some prior knowledge of the garden as I had often seen it featured on TV, but I was very happy as I had never expected to be shown around the temple. I was the only visitor at this time, but he gave me a thorough explanation. From the history surrounding the temple, there are photos taken when former Prime Minister Hosokawa, a descendant of Fujitaka Hosokawa, who is said to have stayed at Koshoji Temple as a vassal of Yoshiteru Ashikaga, visited the temple, and the history of the temple being built as a family temple for the Sasaki family, a direct descendant of Udaten. There is a photo of Prince Akishino visiting Gakushuin when he was a high school student. The principal image of Buddha, a seated statue of Shakyamuni Nyorai (a nationally important cultural property), was worshiped by Fujiwara no Yorimichi when his nephew, Emperor Ichijo's son, passed away, as it was said to be one of the three Buddhas. It is said that Shibari Fudo Myoo was originally a Nenjibutsu of Masashige Kusunoki, but when Tokitsune Kuchiki attacked Chihaya Castle in present-day Osaka Prefecture at the end of the Kamakura period, he used it to avoid being exposed to military fire. For this reason, they have moved it to our temple for a festival. This Ming-o-o has also come to an end. As I gazed into the eyes of Masashige Kusunoki, who must have been seen praying to him many times, my thoughts wandered to the stage of Masashige Kusunoki's heroic history, and I felt somehow strange that we could still worship Fudo Myoo in this day and age. I think I got that feeling. Unfortunately it's raining outside the main hall. However, since there was a four-room tower, I was able to leisurely admire the garden from within the four-door tower, which was nice. There was a dead end around the garden, so I was able to appreciate it from a little distance, but I felt that it created a luxurious atmosphere, as it was built for the shogun's entertainment. Ta. According to the explanation at the temple, the 500-year-old camellia trees bloom beautifully, so I hope to be able to visit again in April before Golden Week. By the way, on the way back, there was a blizzard, and I had to drive in bad weather that I don't usually experience in Hirakata, where I live. On the way back, I didn't use the Nishiotsu Bypass and headed south on National Route 367, passing through Ohara in Kyoto City and heading home. The weather continued to be bad until we left Shiga, and although the roads were not covered in snow, I was worried about the tires slipping while driving. I was underestimating the weather in the mountains. I am reminding myself that I will be careful to choose a day with good weather the next time I visit.

Iwajinkan was once located here, where Yoshiharu Ashikaga, the 12th shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, stayed to escape the war, and the garden is said to have been created by Kanrei Hosokawa Takakuni, an elegant man at the time, for the shogun, who left Miyako and went on to become a mute. has been done. Afterwards, the Kuchiki clan's family temple, Shurinji, was built in this area, and this garden came to be called the former Shurinji garden. Shurin-ji Temple was later moved, and Kosho-ji Temple came here later. In other words, it is often said about Koshoji that ``Zenji Dogen named it Koshoji because the scenery was too similar to Koshoji in Fushimi Fukakusa on his way down to Echizen Eiheiji''. , that means. By the way, there is a place on the internet that says, ``The scenery resembles the place where Koshoji Temple in Uji is'', but that is clearly incorrect. Koshoji Temple, built by Dogen Zenji, was located in Fushimi Fukakusa, but has since been abolished. Koshoji Temple, which is now located in Uji, was rebuilt in the Edo period by Nagai Naomasa, the lord of Yodo Castle. The parking lot is quite large. As you head north on the national highway on the right bank of the Azumigawa River, you will see a signboard on your left confirming the existence of a parking lot. If you climb the stairs from there, you will see a beautiful temple surrounded by greenery on the edge of the river terrace formed by the Azumigawa River. In front of the temple's modest gate are the graves of soldiers from this village who fought and died for their country, and you can see them calmly looking back at their hometown. When you enter the gate, the ``Old Shurinji Garden'' will be on your left. Unlike the well-maintained gardens of famous tourist temples in Kyoto and other places, this garden has a beauty that feels like it is integrated with nature. It's as if human hands and skills have blended into nature over time. When you apply for a visit at the reception desk on the right side of the main hall, the chief priest's wife will show you around the hall. The principal image of Buddha, the seated statue of Shakyamuni Nyorai, and the statue of Fudo Myoo enshrined in the Reishi Hall are masterpieces. You'll never get tired of seeing it, and you'll want to visit again and again. Nestled in a tranquil, somewhat secluded area, Hanifu Shrine is a historic site that has been cherished since ancient times. It is a Shikinai shrine that has been revered as Habu Daimyojin since ancient times, and is a historic shrine whose construction can be traced back to before the Nara period. Originally, praying for rain was held in various places around Lake Biwa, and a similar ceremony was held at Narifu Shrine as well. A clay horse was unearthed from the temple grounds, and since the festival coincides with the festival of the Goddess of Elephant, it seems to be related to the rain ritual at Nyukawakami Shrine. The garbage segregation is well-maintained, with a nearby toilet and utensil washing area. The space is quite large, with everything being a short 5-10 minutes walk apart. The staff are very friendly and the neighborhood is pleasant.

(Translated by Google) Shikinaisha Meishin Taisha. Last year, when I was touring Maruoka Castle during Hokuriku tourism, I visited Takamukai Shrine, which is connected to Furihime, the mother of Emperor Keitai, and when planning my Shiga history sightseeing this time, I decided to visit the Tomb of King Hikoshu, her spouse and father of Emperor Keitai. I decided to visit because it was located in Azumigawa. In addition to visiting the Hikoshu King's Tomb (Tanaka Ozuka Tumulus and Azumi Mausoleum Reference Site), we will also visit the company and Mieo Shrine, which enshrines Hiko Shushu's King Furihime. Furihime seems to have originated from the Mio-kun/Mio clan, whose ancestor was the deity enshrined at Mizuo Shrine, and the base of the Mio clan was the Wadauchi River (Mizuno River) area at the foot of Mt. I wonder? I don't know where King Hikoshu's headquarters was, but it appears that he proposed to Furihime, who was said to be beautiful, from the ``Three-Tailed Bettei (Bettei)''. It seems that Mio-no-Kimi had power in Noto-Kaga-Omi, and after the death of her master, Hiko, Furihime, who became a widow, decided to take shelter in Takamukai Shrine (Takamukai Shrine) with the young Emperor Keitai. According to the exhibits at the Fukui Prefectural Wakasa History Museum that I visited the day before, Noto-Kaga-Wakasa-Omi was probably a close cultural area as it was a distribution route for salt and seafood. (Translated by Google) Mizuo Shrine (Miojinja/Miojinja). Haido, Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture. Two shrines listed in the Shikinai (Meishindai), formerly a prefectural shrine. Main deity: ・Iwatsukwake no Mikoto - Son of the 11th Emperor Suinin, described in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki as the ancestor of the Mio clan (the Mio clan) and Hakui clan (the Hakui clan). Deity of Kawanishya (Southern main hall: current shrine). ・Himegami - Refers to Furuhime, mother of the 26th Emperor Keitai. Deity of Kawahokusha (Northern main hall), moved to Kawanishya in 1971 as a co-shrine, and later enshrined together with the other. Regarding the deities enshrined, there was once a theory that Sarutahiko-no-Mikoto (Kanan-sha) and Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto (Kahoku-sha), but since it is a shrine that enshrines the ancestors of Mio-no-Kimi, it is now designated as having two deities, Iwatsukiwake-no-Mikoto and Hime-no-Kami. According to the documents, The date of its founding is unknown, but the "Shinsho Kakuchokufu-sho" states "Mio-no-Kami, Jusannohe, Jingo-1, September 7th, talisman," so it seems that it was already a famous shrine in 765. The Engishiki Shinmei-cho lists two Mizuo-jinja shrines, and in the past, there were two shrines, Kawanishya and Kawahoku-sha, separated by the Wadauchi-gawa River (Mizunoo-gawa). The current location is where Kawanishya was located, but Kawahoku-sha collapsed in a typhoon in 1970, and now exists as a small shrine, Himemiya, next to the main shrine. According to the "Report on the Investigation of Shrines in the Shikinai-sha," the shrine's name marker seems to have been erected at the former site of Kawahoku-sha. Minoo Shrine once consisted of two shrines, Kounamisha (South Main Hall) and Kohokusha (North Main Hall), separated by the Minoo River, but now consists of only one, Kounamisha. According to the legend of the shrine, Iwatsukiwake came to this place, where Sarutahiko is enshrined, to learn about Amenori Shintoism from Sarutahiko. He then offered homage to Mio Daimyojin (Nagata Shrine in Nagata, Takashima City), where Sarutahiko is enshrined, every morning and evening, and this place came to be known as the "Place of Worship (later Haido)," and the site of his residence was known as the "Place of Worship." Iwatsukiwake died here, so his son, Iwakiwake no O, buried Iwatsukiwake no Mikoto on Mount Mio and founded the "Kounamisha (current shrine)" as a shrine to enshrine Iwatsukiwake no Mikoto. According to the shrine's legend, Emperor Ojin's eleventh son, Hayasawake no Omi, also came to live here to study Amenori Shinto, and his fourth-generation grandson, Hikonushihito, married Furihime, the fifth-generation grandson of Iwakiwake no Omi, as his wife. Furihime gave birth to three children at the same time, Amaatobe no Omi, Otoatobe no Omi, and Oatobe no Omi (referring to the 26th Emperor Keitai), in the worship hall of Mizuo Shrine. At the time of the birth, Hikonushihito built a temporary shrine and prayed for a safe delivery, and later, Amaatobe no Omi founded Mienari-jinja Shrine on the site of the temporary shrine to enshrine his parents, which marked the beginning of the "Kahoku Shrine." It is said that the shrine later came to enshrine only Hime no Kami (Furihime). This Kahokusha Shrine collapsed in 1971, and has since been moved to its current location at Kahokusha Shrine.

Nestled about 3 kilometers from my home, Oarahiko Shrine is a hidden gem that truly comes alive in the autumn months. As I strolled along the long approach path flanked by trees, I was captivated by the vibrant hues of maple leaves transforming into stunning shades of red and gold. The old cypress bark lining the mountain trail adds an enchanting touch with its mysterious reddish tones. Although my visit was solitary, it only heightened the serene atmosphere surrounding this relatively large shrine.

In the past, there were trees growing along the approach to the shrine (like the area where the first torii gate is located), but now it seems like a lot of the trees have been cut down and the shrine is quite bright. The shrine office is next to the head priest's house, and you can get the goshuin at his house, or you can either go there to get the goshuin, or there is a bookcase over the glass door of the shrine office, so you can open it and exchange it for the firstfruits fee. (Translated by Google) Former Kuchiki Jinya ruins. Today, the remains of a well, some stone walls, and a moat remain, but it is deserted. The most noticeable thing is an old folk house that was relocated for some reason. The museum that once existed is now closed. The Kuchiki clan is part of the Sasaki clan, which was the shugo of Omi, and had ruled Kuchiki-so since the Kamakura period. This area once held an important position on the main road connecting Wakasa and Kyoto. The Kuchiki clan skillfully fought against Nobunaga during the Sengoku period. He also participated in the Battle of Sekigahara, and like Hideaki Kobayakawa, he survived by betraying the Western army and joining the Eastern army. Although he was not a daimyo during the Edo period, he had a koku high of just over 9,000 koku as a katai yoriai. The Shimazu clan of Satsuma is probably the only other clan that consistently ruled the same area from Kamakura to the Meiji Restoration. Information board and parking lot available. (The following is quoted from the local information board) Shiga Prefecture designated historic site The Kuchiki Jinya ruins are located in Nojiri, where the main stream of the Azumigawa River and the tributary Kitakawa converge. This area faces Kuchiki Kaido, which connects Wakasa, Echizen, and other areas with Kyoto, and is an important transportation hub from a military, political, and economic perspective. The Kuchiki clan is an offshoot of the Sasaki clan, and was first appointed as the head of the land in Kuchiki-sho after the Jokyu War (12), and since Mototsuna Kuchiki, who had distinguished himself in the Battle of Sekigahara and the Osaka Siege, he has been in the position of junior. He occupied this area as a daimyo and ushered in the Meiji Restoration. Today, the remains that mark the site of the Jinya include the remains of an earthwork, a well, a stone wall, and a moat, but at the time, it appears that there were a palace, a samurai hall, a swordsmanship dojo, a horse paddock, and a warehouse on the site. Excavation surveys conducted in 1982 discovered traces of buildings from the Edo period in the upper layer, and layers containing relics from the Muromachi period in the lower layer. Based on these research results, it can be assumed that the Kuchiki clan's residence was established in the Middle Ages, and that it changed to a Jinya in the Edo period. (Translated by Google) Kuchiki Jinya Ruins is where Kuchiki Castle 🏯 was located. It was discovered by chance during a survey in 2000 to improve the road that passed in front of it, and the location of Kuchiki Castle has been determined. It is surrounded by an earthen embankment, and outside it is a pond, which has been discovered to be a moat. It is a natural fortress surrounded by the Kitagawa River on the west side and the main stream of the Azumigawa River on the south side. There are also Horikiri in the east and west. The lord of the castle is Mototsuna Kuchiki, one of the Seven Takashima clans of the Sasaki clan, and has a country of 9,500 koku, and although he is not a feudal lord, he is a servant of the Ashikaga Shogunate. This area was known as the Shogun district, and it is said that there was plenty of money from lumber and other sources. Locals say that in the past, a large cedar used to sell for 1 million yen, but now it costs 100,000 yen. At that time, 1 million yen was worth buying a luxury foreign car. It remained in the same location for 600 years from the Kamakura period to the Meiji Restoration. It is very rare for people to be in the same place due to a change of country, and it seems that only Mr. Shimazu and Mr. Kuchiki are in the same place. The locals believed that the location was located in a steep mountain called Kuchikidani, and in the winter there was a lot of snow, making it isolated, and that this may have been due to geographical factors. During the Edo period, a castle town was established outside Kitagawa. What makes it unique is the Kaimagari road. It seems that the name comes from the shape of a key used to open a storehouse, and the road curves at right angles, making it difficult for enemies to enter when they attack. There is also a standing trough and a water tower made of bricks to direct mountain water to two or three houses. The system is such that the water is poured into a water tower and then hosed down to several homes. Access: Take the Ewaka bus 🚌 from JR Kosei Line Azumigawa Station for 30 minutes and get off at Kuchiki Gakko-mae. This time we did a special feature on Emperor Keitai. The mascot character, Mio Mio, is also posted at the entrance. There are also items excavated from the Yayoi period, ancient tombs, Nara, and Heian period, so they are not that rare. Also, compared to the history museums in neighboring Otsu City, Kyoto, and Osaka, the building space is too small. Since it is being built on the birthplace of Emperor Keitai, who is thought to be the direct ancestor of the current imperial family, I would like it to be a slightly larger historical museum. However, normally I would have been able to hear a detailed explanation, but unfortunately, due to the measures taken against the new virus, it is difficult to do so. So let's absorb it ourselves. (Translated by Google) There are many exhibits related to the Keitai Emperor lineage. They also prepared a lot of detailed free leaflets, which I was very grateful to be able to read over and over again when I got home. The staff were also very kind and answered my questions thoroughly. It's hard to believe that admission is free. If you are planning to visit the ruins and shrines in Takashima City, we recommend that you go here first.
