Coronado in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Coronado, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Coronado offers wide, sandy beaches often noted for their sparkling mica sand and gentle surf, popular with families and swimmers. The island is home to the historic Hotel del Coronado, a landmark Victorian beachfront resort dating to the 19th century. Visitors can stroll or bike along flat coastal paths, browse the shops and restaurants on Orange Avenue, or take the ferry across the bay for skyline views of San Diego. Kayaking, paddleboarding, and sailing are also common activities in the calm waters of the bay.
With favorites like Peohe's, Panama 66, and Fleet Science Center, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Burger King and Peohe's so you can get the best taste of Coronado while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Zoo
Zoos & Aquariums
The San Diego Zoo is a world-renowned 100-acre zoo that is home to over 12,000 rare and endangered animals from 600 different species. The lush jungle environment created by the zoo's 700,000 types of plants provides an immersive experience for visitors. One of its newest attractions is the Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, which offers interactive displays on insects, amphibians, and other wildlife along with play areas such as a giant treehouse and a splash zone.
This is 100% a world class zoo. They make use of the space extremely well. There's plenty of walking to do, but they make it a wonderful experience. I was thoroughly impressed with the amount of conservation and research that they do as well. I learned all about it on the fantastic double decker bus tour, which I highly recommend. This was an experience that is second to none.
K L — Google review
The San Diego Zoo is a must see on a San Diego visit! I would say it’s an all day event if you plan to see the entire zoo. I was there from 9am to 5pm! Make sure to bring your comfortable walking shoes! I would recommend taking their bus tour from the start and sitting on the to deck on the right side. You’ll see more of the attractions during the drive than the left. The bus tour is a great starting point and allows you to see a lot of the zoo and animals from a high POV! From there I recommend choosing your important must see animals and go from there! The air cable car is in the middle of the zoo and stops at the polar bear attraction so plan accordingly. Some people like to take it down at the end of their visit because you’ll end up at the entrance but there is more of a line. They do allow water bottles and food. Highly recommend drinking water as it does get hot!

Kendal and I visited the San Diego Zoo for his birthday, and it was truly an unforgettable experience! Although I’m not usually a huge fan of zoos, we couldn’t pass up the chance to explore this world-famous destination and I’m so glad we did. From the moment we walked through the gates, we were surrounded by lush greenery, vibrant habitats, and some of the most beautiful animals I’ve ever seen. Every exhibit felt thoughtfully designed to give guests an up-close look while still respecting the animals’ space. We saw elephants, lions, pandas, and even a few playful monkeys who put on quite the show. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and it was clear they genuinely care about conservation and animal welfare. One of the highlights was taking the Skyfari aerial tram, which gave us a stunning view of the entire zoo… perfect for catching our breath after all that walking! Speaking of walking, this zoo is massive, so definitely wear your most comfortable shoes. We also lucked out by visiting in October, when adults pay regular admission and kids get in free, a great deal for families! Between the breathtaking exhibits, fun learning moments, and the joy on Kendal’s face the entire day, it was hands-down one of the best birthday adventures we’ve ever had. Even if you’re not a “zoo person,” the San Diego Zoo might just change your mind. A must-visit for anyone traveling to Southern California!
Jayde H — Google review
The San Diego Zoo is the best zoo we have ever gone to, bar none. Initially, we were put off by the high price of admission. However, we were convinced it was money well spent by the first hour we were there. All the exhibits are thoughtfully laid out and you can spend a complete day there. We had a lot of fun learning about all the different type of animals and how we can make a difference for the betterment of all creatures.
Tim L — Google review
Had the best experience visiting the SD ZOO, definitely not a 1 day experience, so many beautiful animals to see. So beautiful walking thru all the green forest/bamboo. Loved the tour bus & flying thru the sky... Staff was super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Able to bring in own drinks & food. Which is super helpful when bringing kids.
Ester — Google review
Very Fun place to go with family and friends Lots of awesome animals compared to other zoo’s. Location is great and heavy parking lot so theres never issues finding a spot! Lots of room even when packed. I have been several times where the park seems full but you never have issues seeing animals across the park due to the high volume. Animals seem to have really nice enclosures and don’t seem unhappy which is relieving for a zoo. Prices range from about $65 for children and adults are usually around $75. For a whole day pass this usually is pretty good price Military get in this location for free and can go anytime.
Cameron M — Google review
Had a fabulous time at the San Diego Zoo. One of the best zoos I have ever been to! If you plan on coming, please wear comfortable walking shoes. Took us a little over 5 hours to walk the zoo in its entirety. We went early in the day and were able to see a lot of the animals out and active. The Skyfari Aerial Tram was a wonderful bonus, didn’t get to take the bus tour but we still enjoyed our visit. Didn’t get to see the Panda, it had retreated to it napping spot by the time we got to its area. I recommend buying your tickets in advance. I bought my tickets through a 3 rd party website. Had no issues. Tickets were emailed to me and scanned at the entrance.
Isabella R — Google review
The kids love the zoo and so did WE. Of course these days I feel like you have to go in October because kids under 11 are free with paid adult. We were really excited about the Pandas and that was a complete bust! You can barely see them! The highlight was the horny baboon that pleasured himself right in front of us! Explain that to the kids what he is doing! Overall it was fun and you definitely get your steps in waking the park.

The Fleet Science Center in San Diego is an educational hub offering a variety of interactive experiences for visitors of all ages. With over one hundred hands-on exhibits, the center caters to curious kids and their parents. Younger children can explore Kid City, designed specifically for those up to five years old, while older kids can engage in workshops at the Studio X maker space.
We went just an hour before closing but it was such a cool experience. Understandably it is focused on children, but it is a very neat place and had a lot of things to read and experience for adults too. The area on the second floor with lights and colours was especially interesting and the gift shop had a lot of cool magnets and postcards for those who collect them or wish to send something to a loved one. Great place for anyone who has an abundance of curiosity.

Fun place to spend a few hours with kids of all ages. Everything here is hands on and interactive. A great way to pique their interest on science! There is an area designated for children under 5 that was nice to let them explore freely. 4 stars because the exhibits were somewhat worn and could use a refresh. Great place overall and great staff!

GREAT place for a few hours. My daughter is four so this is a GREAT place for her due to the Kid City on the first floor. She spent 2 out of the 3 hours here alone. It’s a 5 yr old and younger space and very interactive. I saw an earlier review state that this place is slightly worn but I didn’t think so. Well maintained and I appreciate all the sanitation stations considering everything here you touch!!

We love going to Fleet Science Center! Kid City is a favorite stop for our three year old. Even our teenager still enjoys family visits to the museum.

We attended the Candlelight: Bad Bunny Tribute and had such a good time. We could not stop smiling while in attendance as we were mesmerized by the beautiful sounds and feelings washing over us. If you enjoy music this is a must to attend. I can't wait for my next Candlelight outing.

Hands foot and mouth . My child caught hands foot and mouth after our recent visit on Friday September 26th I called to inform them and they dismissed it with a single word being “okay” as a response . I highly doubt they’ll take the necessary precautions to disinfect. A team needs to be up there to disinfect every hour or so with the amount of kids who come through. Absolutely disgusting way they handled the situation .
Joe J — Google review
I went on Tuesday which is free for San Diego residents to go, so took advantage of that to explore the immersive experience! I absolutley loved the display of science! A little crowded with kids under the age of 10, so beware of that😆

We took our 10 and 11 year old boys here, and there is so much to do! You get 1 IMAX showing with your entry fee. There are so many hands on activities. We particularly enjoyed seeing the Tesla coil being turned on. I would highly recommend to anyone with kids.

The Coronado Ferry Center is a waterfront shopping destination that offers a variety of experiences, including art galleries, apparel retailers, fine dining, and casual eateries. Additionally, visitors can find the Coronado Visitor Center within the Coronado museum of history and art. This modern space provides valuable information about the city to both locals and tourists with friendly and knowledgeable staff available to assist.
The Coronado Ferry Center is such a great place to soak in the beautiful waterfront views, watch the boats, and enjoy the sea breeze. It’s a peaceful, scenic spot with a mix of shops, restaurants, and plenty of benches to sit and take in the San Diego skyline. Whether you’re catching the ferry, grabbing a bite, or just strolling along the waterfront, it’s the perfect place to unwind. A must-visit when in Coronado!

I just visited San Diego at the Port of San Diego , I stopped in at the Old ferry which is a museum. There were lots of nice items to purchase. Even some little bottles of california gold that I bought to gift to my relatives . Anyway long story short , it was an amazing place to visit and I only wish I had more time to spend there. All items at the museum ferry were very reasonable , so I purchased a bunch of items to bring home. The whole area was really nice and parking was easy and reasonably priced. Definately worth visiting and I personally will be returning soon. 🙃

It's a good place to visit, we used both ferry & trolley tour. Lots to see, great ice cream parlour. Great views of San Diego and the bridge.

The scenery is beautiful, but the seaside pedestrian street is very short, and it takes less than 10 minutes to walk from beginning to end. The crowd density is relatively high and it is relatively clean.

Parked in downtown SD and took the ferry to Coronado. The ferry was a nice ride. The weather was incredible. Enjoyed a coffee by the Coronado landing. The ferry leaves every hour So need to rush.

Great views of downtown San Diego. Nice place just to sit and take it all in. Fine shopping and restaurant choices as well.

Had a great experience here. We were able to catch the ferry from this location to Coronado Island. We bought our tickets online. We did have a hard time finding exactly where to stand in line and wait for the ferry because there are several tours in the area, but we were able to figure it out before it was time to leave. It was a quick and easy way to get to the island without dealing with traffic.

Fast food restaurant
This popular fast-food establishment, known for its grilled burgers, fries, and milkshakes, is situated in a shopping center. It lacks a drive-thru or restroom facilities on-site, requiring customers to park their vehicles on the street and walk inside. The food is promptly served and arrives hot and fresh. Located on the side of the island facing downtown San Diego, it is a convenient less-than-10-minute drive from the beach area.
Ordered a chicken wrap and they kindly served the sauce on the side as I requested. The coffee is always ok and a good rest stop for cyclists.
Sherdellah A — Google review
Ordered the two meals for $12. GROSS! Took 2 bites out of the burger and noticed something wrong after the 2nd bite. The top bun was super soggy, which is impossible if the burger is made fresh. The establishment wasn't busy at all and I was the only order at the time cause the 3 people ahead of me had already gotten their food by the time I completed paying for my order. The second sandwich was the classic chicken sandwich... If you looked at my pictures you'd know that the sandwich actually looked like "it" was a classic! Like BK had been saving it since the place first opened. Terrible!! The worst part was when I spoke to the manager about their horrible food that was supposed to have been made to order. Sadly, the manager was as useless as the FOOD I paid for. Zero pride in what she is being paid for; am embarrassment to the Burger King chain restaurant establishment. I'm only saying this cause after showing her my disgusting display of food, she had the audacity to say with a smirk on her face that she had nothing to do with my order she didn't even know what my order was... But fact of the matter is, since they were closing in about 30 min, there were only 3 employees that were visible and she was the one I saw bag up my food and the cashier made the drinks. I really hope this was a one time occurrence, god forbide that this type of behavior doesn't happen regularly otherwise people in Coronado would be coming up the hospitals here with FOOD POISONING!!
Adrian ( — Google review
This BK is so expensive!! There are no combos less than $12. Workers are nice and they are working hard. The store itself is kind of glum, and the AC didn't work.
Brandon H — Google review
As far as a fast food restaurant goes this one is very clean and the staff are very nice. The only thing is that the order comes out wrong periodically other than that it is great. Also it is in a great location and easy to get to. There is also outdoor seating as well.
Baba B — Google review
I ordered 2 burgers, one with no onions and they put onions on it. I took it back and they made another fresh w/o onions. The biggest shock was how much 2 burgers fries and drinks were. No frills or extras was $39.52.
Joe M — Google review
Good prices, good same taste, cheapest option in the area, clean and family friendly, you can grab a quick bite or eat and relax after taking a good swim in the beach 5 minutes away walking, kids enjoy the nuggets, you can also eat outside on the shaded tables

A better than average food-wise BK (Coronado CA) that has posted flyers asserting no ICE (immigration) enforcent on its premises. Hmmm.

Restaurant
Peohe's is a Southern California dining spot that perfectly captures the essence of the region with its breathtaking bay front views, Pacific Rim cuisine menu, and stylish tropical atmosphere. Situated near Coronado Ferry Plaza, this restaurant offers stunning vistas of Downtown San Diego skyline and passing boats. The menu celebrates the flavors of the Pacific with bold and fresh dishes that combine island cooking techniques with tropical accents.
Definitely a fancy, romantic restaurant. Highly recommended if you are having a date night. Service is superior. Great food, excellent drink menu. Recommend outdoor dining area during the evening because of the great view of the bay and downtown San Diego across the bay. They have gas lamps and table lights to create an ambient and romantic atmosphere.
Mark W — Google review
The best part was our amazing waitress Alyssa. She is a gem! I dined with a group of 6. We sat outside, and the views were great! Where the restaurant lacks is service time and ambience… there was zero dinner music, so you hear all the chatter from the surrounding tables, but as for the service… my group all ordered drinks as soon as we sat down because we had read from other reviewers that the bar could take a while, and it took over 20 minutes to get our drinks. They all came out at different times, which I’m assuming is them not having enough bar staff. Then, for dinner, I ordered the swordfish, which was just OK. I had also ordered wine to come out with my food but didn’t receive it until I had eaten half my dinner. Again… Alyssa is amazing. She did all she could to make the experience as good as it could be!
Lexie N — Google review
I was super excited to try this place, but ended leaving super disappointed. I heard great thinks about the squid ink pasta, but after spending $51 on it i was disappointed. The Mac n cheese was ordered by the group and it was quite nasty as it was super watery. The only good thing the group decided was the crab cake and the views. Overall unless we came on the worst possible day I would never recommend this place to anyone wanting a great experience.
Coach T — Google review
Coming from the East Coast I’m spoiled by beautiful waterfront views, but this place did not disappoint! The waterfront views looking across at the city skyline was just perfect! The Happy Hour selection of food was alap phenomenal. And the server treated us like royalty. She went above and beyond to make my friend feel special on her 50th birthday. Highly recommended, next trip out, I’ll be back for sure.
Lacey F — Google review
Our server was great! I wish I remembered his name it was an older gentlemen but he made us (party of five) feel welcomed and even cracked a few jokes keeping us entertained. We sat outside with a spectacular view of the water. It did get cold as the sunset and in the shade so we had the heat lamps on. Food was good. It was my first time there but not everyone's and I was told the food used to be better. We shared an appetizer (pu pu platter) and some of the sides. Note: while they don't have it listed as a side, it is possible to get the garlic mashed potatoes as a shared side. My dad was brought the wrong dish because the sides were wrong however it was quickly rectified. While I am not big on desserts the rest of the party enjoyed the hot lava cake which was made to order and, I'm told, extremely delicious. I ordered a sushi roll. Three of the five order a variation of steak or prime rib. My dad ordered the sea bass. If I ever make it back to San Diego, I wouldn't mind going again.

We’ve been to Peohe’s a few times now and have never had a bad experience. The food is always great and the service is just as good. We started with the calamari, which we love. It comes with fried veggies (not fries like some reviews say), and we actually enjoy that. The crab cake was really good too it’s mostly meat, not a lot of filler, and served over a perfectly fried soft shell crab. I had the filet mignon, it was slightly overcooked, but honestly not a huge deal since I usually prefer ribeye (which they don’t offer). The real highlight was the 2 lbs of king crab legs. They were already split open, super clean, and basically spike-free. So good! We also tried the mojito flight, it was really tasty, just wish they were a little stronger. We sat outside on the patio, and it was perfect. Not too loud or too cold, and you could hear the waves. Our server was great too, he was super chill and never rushed us, even though we came in late.

Amazing brunch at Peohe’s in Coronado! Stunning view of the water and downtown San Diego, such a tropical and relaxing vibe. So many great options on the menu, we had to try the pupu platter because everything on it sounded and tasted delicious. For entrees the lobster + shrimp roll and sesame crusted salmon were superb. The cocktail menu does not disappoint, we enjoyed the double berry mule, chocolate & bourbon, caged tiki, and fleur d’ lis. The service was fantastic, friendly, and accommodating. Highly recommend!

Tea house
Tea Pavilion is a charming cafe located near the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park. It offers a variety of traditional Japanese teas, sushi, rice bowls, and snacks. The outdoor seating provides a delightful dining experience amidst the beautiful gardens and striking architecture of Balboa Park. The menu includes imported teas and casual Asian fusion dishes such as soups, salads, sandwiches, and rice bowls. Customers can enjoy a wide selection of tea flavors while indulging in delicious food options like the popular curry bowl.
Food looks reasonably good, outdoor dining overlooking the garden. Price wise is slightly more than other cafes. Compared to other eateries/cafe in the garden, there’s no pigeons here fighting over your food, which is a very nice and calm touch while you’re eating. Bring a hat as the sun sometimes gets in your eye depending where you’re facing.
Ian S — Google review
Stopped in during our visit to Balboa Park - ordered a chicken rice bowl and a chicken curry sandwich ($38 total). Rice bowl flavor was good - chicken had a little too much of a bite to it for my liking. Chicken curry sandwich was also good - served cold. Service was very friendly and helpful! Clean areas, plenty of shaded tables to sit and eat + overlook Japanese Gardens. Overall, nice light options for the area but probably would try a different spot on our next visit.
Jamie O — Google review
The food is expensive and not great with small portions. I didn’t like the teas they were not very strong and tasted too close to water. I’m grateful to have tried it but will not eat here again given the choice.
Cece S — Google review
This is not a sit-down restaurant because you order your food inside and then eat outside if there's tables available. It is a hot day but there are limited 4-seat tables with umbrellas. However, the best seating is next to the cliff overlooking the Japanese garden. Since they did not have a lot of options available on their menu (salmon, udon, Thai Iced Tea), our selections were limited. So, we ended up having teriyaki rice bowls and salad.
Jaymar S — Google review
We got miso and a couple of rice bowls. The food was good, fresh and tasty, however the place would really benefit from some extra cleaning efforts. All the outside seating tables were fairly dirty (you can see on the picture what I mean by that). Service also was just OK.
Dmytro B — Google review
I wouldn't recommend the place if you have other choices at the area. The food is good, nothing special. But the thing I hate the most is automatically included 20% tip. Don't get me wrong, I am ok with tips and I pay tip, but they must be deserved. Just taking an order does not worth 20% tips. The tables outside were not very clean. Chilling homeless at the table does not improve overall feeling about the place.
Ivan K — Google review
Not sure why some people are complaining. We have eaten there many times over the years. The setting is very nice. It's rather quiet considering how busy the park is. The food such as the curry rice bowls and sandwiches are rather tasty! I would certainly recommend this place!

Nestled within the vibrant Balboa Park, Panama 66 is a trendy American eatery that offers a delightful mix of hot and cold sandwiches alongside an impressive selection of local beers. Set in the picturesque Marcy S. May Sculpture Garden at The San Diego Museum of Art, this open-air venue invites guests to savor simple yet flavorful dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients.
It's a great spot right in the middle of the park. On the weekends they are super busy but if you are around during the week, they have live jazz on Wednesdays. They have a garden with heaters. It's a cozy place with soft lighting and jazz music and great food. They have a lot of options for vegans as well as meat lovers. I love their smash veggie burger. Their fries are exactly like house made fries. My another favorite is their garden salad with salmon. I like that they have both healthy and comforting options. The patio is dog friendly -but you can't sit at the bar with your dog. Overall I would definitely recommend this place. The service is super fast and the jazz music just makes it worth it!
Melodi B — Google review
Pro tip: if you are only getting drinks, there is a different, faster line in. There are limited tables, so if you bring drinks in, take them out with you so the next folks don't have to deal with those dishes on the small tables. Go early to find parking, find a seat. 7/24/25 We dropped by for The Museum of Modern Art Gilbert Castenada's Jazz night session. (Wow, how lucky we are to have someone who cultivates this in our city!) It's great that they have this partnership. We ordered drinks at the bar and walked into the auditorium and found seats quickly. I was impressed with the tall, young man busing tables there. He was mindful of the music and cleared tables quickly. A soda with glass and ice and margarita will be around $19 plus tip. There is a clean bathroom down a long hallway. Could work better: Be prepared to wait in line. There is regularly a wait here to get in and then to be served. Don't go here for a quick bite, there are other options for that. My sister's margarita seemed to be lovely, smaller than expected and had a fruit fly in it. (It happens.)

Came for an early lunch and was impressed with the space. It is tucked away in a great corner of the plaza between two unique buildings with a zenful garden space. Ambiance is nice, plenty of seating and good menu of items to pick from. The pulled pork sandwich was good, meat was moist. Staff was very amicable. You order at the cashier and find a seat. Quick service.

Great jazz place good food. Food is delicious, well prepared and great service. We had the truffle fries which were very crispy and hot. The meat and cheese charcuterie board was massive with diverse options. Music was top notch- really great quality live music. The furnishings are not good, old and flimsy. The place needs a refresh.

Enjoyed eating in the large and shaded outdoor patio at Panama 66 in Balboa Park. Great vibe, connected to a statue garden that is beautiful. We enjoyed the miso glazed salmon and pollo adobado tostadas. The wine was great too, we had the Sauvignon blanc and Albariño. Nice that it is dog friendly. Great place to stop when it’s too hot. Friendly and quick service. Recommend!

Panama 66 is a fantastic outdoor restaurant, and my fiancé adored this place. The environment is busy and the service and food were fantastic. The fries were delicious (Truffle Parm), fresh, and crispy with the aioli sauce on the side. We also ordered the Charcuterie board and they give you an amazing amount of cheese, meat, bread, and olives 🫒 for the price. I think that's what caught us off guard, you're so accustomed to paying high prices and you only get a little, Panama 66 gives you what you pay for and more. I love being pleasantly surprised by restaurants making your money spent well worth it. If you visit Balboa Park go eat here and you'll get a bang for your buck. Quality food Quality service Quality attentive staff

A great option for lunch if you’re looking for a bite while in the park. No table service (order and take a number) and all seating is outdoors with wonderful views next to a sculpture garden. Great craft beer selection and a nice bar to eat at if all the tables are full. Prepare for a line to order and sit during peak hours. Food is approachable (salads, sandwiches, shareables). Their fries are delicious! Kid-friendly as well.

I'm glad that there is the best restaurant is where center of the Balboa Park that symbol of San Diego. That's the Panama66!! Best location makes best restaurant, and best restaurant makes best place. They can get best customers. At the first, the reception gentleman was very kind and friendly. He knows everything of the Balboa Park. His hospitality opens my mind and makes it good mood. Of course, all staffs are kind too. The Park Burger is amazing! There isn't any unnecessary thing. Fluffy bans, thick and juicy meat, a lettuce, and middle ground sauce. Especially, beef is awesome. They can beat anything with just its beef, but they make perfect combination as a burger. The only negative thing is no public restroom. I'll come back! (The Park Burger $20.47)
