When we first arrived at The Art Hotel, not in the lobby but in the hallways leading to the rooms in the old wing, it honestly resembled something out of a scary movie. It immediately reminded me of the film Barbarian, where a girl checks into an Airbnb late on a rainy night and only in the morning realizes how unsettling her surroundings truly are. As I stepped out of the room to chat with the front desk, I was reminded of how unpleasant the hallway and surroundings looked and felt. In fact, unsettled and a bit ill, that was exactly how I felt. Walking into our first room, it was musty, moldy, and uncomfortable. We all literally started coughing and getting itchy throats. If you find yourself in the dingy hallway, you’re in the wrong and in the very old side of the hotel. While it may be acceptable for some, it’s definitely not for me!
Thankfully, the young man at the front desk was outstanding. After explaining that the room was making us physically sick with the moldy smells, he apologized and quickly moved us to the new wing, where things were far better. If I owned a hotel chain, I’d make him a high-level manager. His professionalism and kindness truly stood out. I wish I had gotten his name, but it was our last night in Tokyo after 15 nights, so we were spent and just wanted rest before our long flight home to the US.
The newer rooms are far more acceptable. The hallways have a more hotel-like vibe and don’t feel like the SK movie motel feel of the other side. However, they’re still closer to 2-2.5 stars by my own standards. I also think all hotel carpeting should be replaced with flooring because carpet holds odors and doesn’t feel fresh. Even in the upgraded room, there were still some minor spots on the walls, but no smells!
For those who don’t mind something modest, clean but nothing really more, the new wing may be fine. Personally, my taste runs a lot higher, but my daughter booked this room for us online and kinda last minute. The next day, we went and had lunch at the Hilton nearby, and that atmosphere was much more aligned with what I enjoy. I don’t mind paying for what I want! Still, the front desk service at The Art Hotel was very much the highlight of this stay. I still recommend this hotel, but only in the newer wing because, like I said, the newer wing is acceptable and I’m sure nice for many.
