Museum chronicling Fort Monroe's colonial roots & its military role from the 19th century onward.

If you’re a history buff this is a must see if your in the area visiting or if you live in the area and have never been. It’s an old military base with a museum and lots of history. Beautiful old houses and church. The museum has lots to offer and you can walk the grounds of the base freely. I will say that they do have some civilians occupying some of the dwellings so please just be mindful. We wouldn’t want to trespass in others property. Fort Monroe is very educational. It is surrounded by a moat and you can walk up the steps outside the museum and visit an actual pet cemetery as you walk on top of the museum and take in spectacular views as the museum itself is actually built into the ground. It doesn’t cost anything but you will have to obtain tickets that you can get at the information center located just steps away from the museum itself.
A very interesting and informative museum tour. Highly recommend. You have to get your tickets at the information center and admission is free.
The best history location around. You get to go into the fort and see jow the fought. Tells the histrory from the first settlers to reach the Bay and how they treated the native americans. Also how the african people played a big part in the nations history. The construction of the fort is awesome.
Its a nice and interesting museum that you can walk through and have seen everything in probably about 40 minutes. They used to have more exhibits I believe before Covid but I was told due to flood damage in 2020 some things have changed. It has some neat information and displays about the history of the Fort and its role during the Civil War. This is also where Confederate President Jefferson Davis was held captive for 2 years which the museum also has information about. Entrance is free but you must go to the Visitors Center which is less than a 3 minute walk and reserve/pick up tickets. They let people in the museum every 15 minutes and tickets are very easy to get. The visitor center on its own also houses a few exhibits which are quite interesting. If visiting the Casemate Museum I highly recommend combining it with a walk of the area. It is quite accessible and there are countless of nice views and walks around this area, within and outside of the fortress.
This museum is FREE & filled with amazing history. My 8 year old daughter loved it. We spent about 2 hours there and she kept wanting to see more. Fort Monroe is a must see and visit. I would suggest that afterwards if the weather is right swim outside the fort on the beaches. This is great place for families to spend the day, and pack a picnic.
Great museum of American history. This is a free museum. There are a couple of buildings that you can go into. You can also walk the base on a self guided tours. There are maps available. All of the staff we encountered were friendly and knowledgable and answered any questions that we had. There is also a scavenger hunt that children can do.
Best thing about this place: it’s FREE! Staff are super nice and informative. We went to the museum, but we had to go to the visitor center to get the free tickets. We ended up staying at the visitor center for 30 minutes and then heading back over. Kathy was a volunteer there and was super knowledgeable. We got to see Jeff Davis’ prison cell. Afterward, we walked around the fort on the self guided tour. Highly recommend, especially for the price, ha!
It's a very nice scenic place to walk around. Great exhibit inside the base too. I spent a whole day walking around here. The top of the base, you can walk here with your dogs. The graves are a pet cemetery. The landscape is taken care of but just be careful of the steep hills.

Love this museum. They have several activities for kids from air plan simulators and educational exhibitions. I highly recommend IMAX and sign up for the membership. We would need more than once visit!
My family visited many Space and science museums. This museum displays many airplanes, space capsules, engines, and interactive exhibits. Some exhibits were video games, some physics, some reading, there is an elevator that teaches three floors. The museum had a couple groups there today and it looks like they have labs to teach hands-on activities. There is an airplane that you go inside. There is an affordable option to watch movies about space and exploration. I highly recommend everyone to visit. BTW there are places to eat within walking distance.
Apollo 12 is a must-see for space fans, but the scope, pricing, and maintenance of this museum leaves a lot to be desired. Perhaps it is simply the off-season, or poor timing, or I'm not the target audience, but as great as it is to see Apollo 12 and other sorts of interesting aerospace history like the YF-16 and the F-18 HARV, there are a few (mostly maintenance) issues with this museum. Coming from the larger DC museums, it can hardly be described as a "large" location. This is a smaller location outfitted for field trips and group activities rather than museum-goers, and is largely kid-focused (not always a bad thing). There are a few pieces of unique history here that people should not miss, but equally a lot of video-game distractions that anyone could play anywhere for free, likely with more functional controls. The admission price is not unbelievable, but I would not call it a "bargain", even with the "free IMAX" inclusion. The concession prices and quality are quite poor. At least one bathroom faucet was broken loose in its mountings, and the other one did not function. The IMAX theater is quite well maintained and reasonable, the projectors work as they should, and the 3D calibration is very good, overall a reasonable experience, but quite obviously a padding technique to keep you in the building longer. I personally cannot get enough of space/aerospace history, so I find it hard not to recommend this location, but for the average visitor, it might be mildly underwhelming. Maybe it is a better value with a membership for the local visitors who want to bring their kids in to a fun locale for the weekend, or teachers who want a science camp.
The Virginia Air & Space Science Center in Hampton is such a fun and memorable place! I first went when I was a little girl, and I remember being completely fascinated by all the planes, rockets, and hands-on exhibits. Years later, I went back as an adult while I was teaching 5th grade, and I took my students on a field trip we had an absolute blast. It was amazing to see them light up with the same curiosity and excitement I had as a kid. The museum does an awesome job making learning fun, and there’s something for everyone, no matter your age. Highly recommend! 🚀✈️.
This was mine and my son’s first time experiencing this space center! We were absolutely blown away by how everything was set up and laid out. It was so cool walking around all the different air crafts and learning about how they were made and what they were like in service! My son couldn’t believe that some of them can go over 1000mph and the museum volunteers were so helpful and informing with any questions that we had. We could definitely stand in front of the space shuttle all day long it’s so awe inspiring and beautiful! It was definitely extremely heavy seeing the enola gay in person, knowing that something so awesome can do so much evil is almost incomprehensible
Went as a chaperone for one of my kiddos' field trips. The staff was friendly, particularly the gentleman named Scott who explained the difference between a Harrier jet and a Kestrel. He also told us a story about a jet (probably an F2H Banshee) that lost an engine that had to be helped out of North Korea before ejecting to safety. I highly recommend because, there is lots of information, things to do and even a play place and a cockpit for people to feel like real pilots and a simulator to boot. Not to mention a giant IMAX screen with 3D movie capabilities!
We went for a private event. Very nicely done. Got to visit the exhibits in the museum with no rush.
Very nice museum. Lots of interactions for all ages. You can get a solid two hours in here

A beautiful beach and boardwalk that is well maintained. There are plenty of benches and swinging benches along the boardwalk to sit and enjoy or its perfect for walking or biking with beautiful views. The playground is brand new and is well shaded during certain times of day and there's something for kids of all ages
I love going to this beach. The new playground for kids is great. The beach is usually clean. Life guards on duty during busy weekends and holidays. Beach closed at sunset, and police presence is noticeable. Bathrooms close soon after.the beach closes. Family friendly.
I’ve always enjoyed coming out to Buckroe Beach in Hampton. The sand is clean, the water is calm, and it’s a great spot to relax without all the heavy crowds you sometimes find at Virginia Beach. There’s plenty of space for families, walkers, and people just wanting to catch the sunset. As someone who runs a local business (Military Veterans Moving People of Hampton), I really appreciate having a place like this nearby — it’s where I can clear my head after long moving days and reconnect with the community I serve. It’s nice to see so many other Hampton locals making this beach part of their daily routine too. If you’re in Hampton, I definitely recommend checking out Buckroe Beach. Whether you’re just taking a quick walk, bringing the kids, or just sitting back and listening to the waves, it’s one of those simple treasures that makes this area feel like home. 🌊☀️
Such a great little beach. Never crowded. Great for power walking, watching the sunrise and baby/toddler adventures. They have a new playground that's huge and accessible from morning to sunset. Bathrooms available and separate bike path. There are 2 piers, and I opted for the one closer to the playground which is open during the day and locked by a gate by 5 PM daily. During the summer they have a farmers market across at the park.
One of the nicest and cleanest beaches in the area. Beautiful sunrises can be captured here. It can really get crowded on the weekends though. Overall, I great place to relax and enjoy the bay.
Pretty good beach. Lots of parking space and lots of place on the beach to accommodate everyone even on a busy day. Nice kids playground and beach Frontwalk. Lifeguards are there pretty much whole day. Beach showers and clean restrooms available. Open dawn to dusk.
Pretty beach with plenty of lifeguards during the summer season. Dogs allowed during the off season. Playground is brand new. Shelters available for rent. Boardwalk is an easy walk from end to end. Light poles with numbers help keep track of where you are if you have friends meeting you. Beach volleyball area. Summer season large bathrooms open and multiple rinse off stations are located throughout. Single occupant bathrooms open all year which are nice for families. Staff is always on site. Loads of parking but can get packed in summer season. Lots of green space for picnics and activities. Large, accessible pier over the water with picnic tables plenty big for many families to have their own space. Sad they don't do events there anymore since it has the concert shelter. Also a bummer they haven't opened the food truck spots again. There's no food at the beach. Restaurants nearby. And there's nowhere right there for buying beach things. Have to go to the shopping centers bit further away for a family dollar or dollar general to get last minute beach things.
Absolutely beautiful area. We live an hour and a half away in the Richmond area and had no idea this place was here. So much nicer than going all the way to Virginia beach. Calmer Waters due to the bay and beautiful beach. We will be back

Beautiful area to walk. We take our 3 German Shepherds and we walk the grounds where the huge trees are. So relaxing. Highly recommend.
The historical sites are very interesting. The fort is open to the public. There are beaches that have little to no waves, and one can enjoy the passing of cargo ships closely.
I love Ft Monroe. I worked at the YMCA 52 years ago and met my husband there. We got married at the Chapel if the Centurion. Great place to visit!
There's nobody there you can walk all around the place. No tickets or anything. Plus you can watch all the ships coming in and out of the ports. It's a very cool place. Lots of history.
Absolutely gorgeous. Perfect place to watch the sunrise. Or catch a few dolphin sightings. You might see some container ships or barges, as well. Amazing seeing all the historical sites. I'll definitely be back in the summer to make use of the fantastic beaches!
Fort Monroe is an incredible piece of American history. The views of the Chesapeake Bay are beautiful, and the old fort itself is fascinating to walk through. You can feel the history everywhere you go — definitely worth the stop if you’re in the area.
Lots of work being done so when they get some restoration finished hopefully it will be a great historical spot to visit. Detours so couldn’t get to the lighthouse. Museum not open on Mondays.
Got there after the casement was closed. Part of the upper wall is a pet cemetery. That made me a little sad and miss home and our cats even more. So John is coming. Walked half way around on the upper wall then through the parade ground. Saw the Lincoln cannon. Didn’t stay for sunset, couldn’t find a good foreground.

Absolutely had a blast even though they are under funded. The city needs to give them more funding and so they can better care for the animals and get a few more to attract more people. It is a wonderful place to bring the kids! My daughter didn't want to leave!
What a wonderful and informative park! It was a hot day that day so the wildlife wasn't super active but still a lot to see! The reptile handler gave us an indepth and very fun hands on tour of the turtles. Highly recommend this place for a whole day of family fun!
Visited this park for the first time today and fell in love! It’s an enchanting place where time stands still. So many animals to see: cows, horses, alpacas, donkeys, sheep, goats, pigs, ducks, chickens and peacocks. Arrived at feeding time around 10:30am and it was such a joy to see- the sheep were especially friendly. The beautiful garden and winding wooded path were so peaceful. Plenty of benches and picnic tables. Very clean ADA friendly restrooms.
Free family fun. Part petting zoo, part community gardens, part fantastic elementary-ish age playground, part nature reserve, part anything outside.... and ALL fantastic. Volunteers, community members, boy scouts, senior groups, and other organizations join employees in caring for the animals, plants, and structures on this community layering spot. It is a nice slice of nature and countryside life right in the middle of town, in Hampton near the convention center. There are restrooms, and everything is free except for goat/sheep food. The only animals who you cannot feed are the horses and donkeys. Watch out for the goats, who WILL snatch your bag (& eat it unrepentantly) spilling all the food out... which they will then try to reach to eat. The volunteers and employees are very knowledgeable and friendly, answering many questions for us in our visit. If we lived nearby, we'd go frequently to play and visit the animals. Well worth repeated trips with the kids, or a friend, just to take in a bit of nature, and enjoy a more peaceful setting.
We were visiting family in Williamsburg and were in the area for the day and ran into this free farm! We were with my niece and nephew along with my daughter and the kids had a great time exploring the animals and gardens. The farm also has a play ground, picnic tables, and a small concession stand. For a free experience, it was a great find. There are pigs, ducks, goats, horses, llamas, sheep and chickens. They have a few small gardens and a gazebo. As this was our first visit, it looks like they have different seasonal activities and events. If in the area, or of looking for a nice day to have the kids explore, definitely stop by.
My daughter's been here multiple times but this is my first time. I loved it. Very beautiful grounds, lots of nice animals, food trucks, booths, overall wonderful experience. Highly recommend.
Bluebird Gap Farm is a hidden gem. Free admission, a bunch of animals, tons of gardens, and plenty of places to walk and sit. We went on a Sunday and there was a decent amount of people, but still didn't feel overcrowded. The bathrooms were clean, staff was very welcoming, the animals seemed happy and well taken care of, and the grounds were well maintained. Great place to visit with kids or with a book and coffee.
A farm in the middle of the city!Awesome little spot tucked away. Funded by Hampton city for children to play. Free ❤️ Donations welcomed 💙 Stopped by during the fall plant 🪴 sale being set up and got to see many volunteers 🙋‍♀️ (Master Gardeners hard at work ) and kind paid workers of the farm. Cute animals. Playground as a bonus with a wide age range to play on

Very clean beautiful easy to navigate around plenty of free parking and super clean women’s bathroom. My first time there for DJ Envy drive your dreams car show in July LOVE IT!!!
Hampton Coliseum is such a great event! I've seen everything there since before I can't even remember the circus the monster trucks you name it. I was here this weekend for PHISH😎 Probably my favorite weekend of the Colosseum every year . If you haven't been it's an excellent place to see a concert some theater or an event. It's a definitely must see spot if you're in the eastern Virginia area.
Definitely a sight to see for my first time in the stadium. It was as big as I thought it was and as small as I thought it was all in one. Here’s some pointers on my visit; - Small/Close seats with little elbow room - perfect for quick events only lasting 1-2 hours max - I’m a bit thicker so my hips BARELY fit and I’m also 6”2’ so my knees were on someone back the entire time - parking was a bit confusing - Plenty of food / Concessions - bathrooms accessible - seating was easy to understand (Kinda) - wishing they are more truck events but there just wasn’t enough room
Great venue. Super clean bathrooms, great area for confessions. We went for BITE (Beast In The East) and there was a ton of space even though there was tons of people and arcade games.
The Mothership loves Phish. Phish loves the Mothership and I love them both. Very accommodating venue and super nice staff is what I've experienced in going here for the last 30 years. Yes it's old and some will say outdated which is fine. I like it the way it is because it let's you feel the history of the venue since it's hosted so many wonderful shows over the years including Jerey Garcia Band, The Rolling Stones, Primus and The Grateful Dead and so many more. Don't change a thing. As long as they have that tasty lemonade I'll keep coming back.
My favorite venue in VA. Production, atmosphere, sound quality, all A plus. Security has cracked down within the past few years.
No better place to see a show! Old school venue, but so easy to get around in. Staff is awesome and I can't wait to go back againn
Absolutely one of my favorite venues. Biggest complaints are the bottleneck getting into the venue, with far too few security staff and magnetrons, and the bathroom and concession lines were insane.
