What made this sermon so hurtful for me was when he asked everyone who was a parent or anyone who was caring for or had cared for a child to stand. I can only tell you how much my heart ached as I sat then observed an older couple, also sitting, as the man grabbed the woman's hand and looked at her with all his heart. Pastor Duggar en̈couraged all standing to applaud themselves and the service ended with all remaining standing. I don't need to explain why I wasn't able to be a mother but my Pastor and my church let me down. I never recovered from that day that Christmas holiday season and never returned to Brookwood. No Pastor should ever forget that life doesn't always treat all the same and messages should take that into account.

So what else would you need? Besides of all that, Brookwood has an incredible facility (my daughter goes at the academy school for day care), a program of activities built for the entire family, a great care and ministry team, plenty of small groups to help you get connected (I attend the Brazilian community group...they are awesome!!) Beautiful to see the variety of communities, races and people coming together and worshiping God in this place. Real church made from real people, it may feel intimidating (or amazing) at the first glance because of the size but it will certainly feel "small" and warm when you start to connect with the people.

This is not a traditional Baptist church in any way. If you would like to know why, read more below: I visited the church for the first time by attending the Easter service (2019). I have been a Baptist for all my life (over 30 years) and have attended many different baptist churches over the years Here in Greenville, SC and elsewhere. The first thing I did not like was when the children’s leader brought all the children up to the front and informed and the church that their lent agreement was not to say the word “Hallelujah” for lent. This struck me as odd as why would a church instruct children not to say “Hallelujah” as if it is a bad thing to say. Given lent was over since it was Easter, the children were given bells at this time to ring whenever any hymn or the pastor said the word (Hallelujah) which became a joke as all the songs sung that morning had the word Hallelujah and the pastor kept saying it as if it is a joke to get the kids to ring their new bells. The bell thing did not bother me but to me was taking the Lord’s name in vain (Exodus 20:7 and Hallelujah means “praise the Lord”). The second thing that I did not find appropriate was the actual sermon message which focused not on our salvation through Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and rise from the dead but the pastor instead said that salvation is the ability of one person to help another and focused on talking about how others helped him recover from depression (he may have also mentioned recovery from drugs but it was not clear). So instead of focusing on the main event and principle in Christianity he focused on himself and how the church has helped homeless people and LBGT individuals. I know Church is a very personal thing and some people like churches others may hate, but I did not find a single review online or on the church website that mentioned that the church was lead by a person who went through rehab for one reason or another (the pastor) and that the church is LBGT friendly and welcoming especially given the view of Baptist on LBGT and other similar individuals.

He went far above and beyond as my parents, and eventually my husband and I, relocated from the midwest. Even before we officially decided to move we wanted to be in contact with a realtor to find out about the Greenville area. She .....out of the blue mentioned she was a therapist and could NOT promise this would be a safe space tonight , so be ready. IT BLEW OUR MINDS! The church should have been Christ centered unifying us NOT making us resurface PAIN from the past. Praying for this church.
