We’ve been coming up to Anstruther for years in the camper, and more often than not we’d find ourselves in the queue outside the famous Fish Bar. Years ago, the wait always felt worth it—the fish was generous, fresh, and paired perfectly with their always-delicious chips.
Sadly, this visit left us underwhelmed. The chips are still very nice, no complaints there, but the fish itself was a real letdown. The portion was so small it felt like there was more batter than actual fish inside. Granted, the batter was tasty, but when the fish is meant to be the star of the show, it just didn’t live up to what it once was.
The service also seems to have slipped a notch. Not terrible, but definitely not what it used to be when things ran like clockwork. All in all, it just didn’t have the same sparkle that made it worth queueing for in the past.
Next year, we’ll probably give somewhere else a try. Still good chips, but sadly the Fish Bar has lost a bit of the magic it used to have.

We visited this place for a classic British meal and were not disappointed. The Fish and Chips was truly traditional and delicious—the batter was crispy, the fish was flaky and fresh, and the chips were perfect.
The service was efficient and prompt, though perhaps not overly friendly or warm; they were definitely professional.

Just go! A friend who used to live in Edinburgh recommended this place for fish and chips. I had the lemon sole and my wife had the traditional haddock. Both were excellent! Had the Haddock Fish Supper and honestly — the best fish and chips of my life! The fish was perfectly golden and flaky, the batter crisp without being greasy, and the chips… just incredible. It’s honestly akin to magic, TBH.
The staff were super friendly and helpful, making the whole experience even better. Worth the trip from Australia just to taste it!
💡 Tip: It can get very busy, especially during lunch and dinner rush, so aim to go close to opening time if you want to avoid the queue.

On having a cottage break away with our dogs we thought we'd travel the 40 minutes to try the famous Anstruther fish bar. We were not disappointed. The best fish supper ive had. Really tasty batter and the freshest haddock the chips were fluffy and crisp on the outside. The wife went rogue and got halloumi sticks with chips and curry sauce. In her words the best chippy she's had. I had a side of homemade tattar sauce. It was all delicious. I can see why this is ranked the best. This will be a regular whilst in Fife.

Called into the Anstruther Fish Bar on Friday afternoon very busy with sit in and takeaway although I was a fare bit back in the queue the young lass took my order and some 20 minutes later my order was ready.
I ordered their traditional battered haddock 🐟 and chips 🍟 along with a breaded 🍞 lemon 🍋 sole 🐟 and chips 🍟.
The breaded 🍞 lemon 🍋 sole 🐟 was plentiful with two lemon 🍋 sole 🐟 and a fare portion of chips 🍟. All of the above were tasty and delicious 😋.
On the other hand the battered haddock 🐟 was a bit of a damp squib as there were three very small haddock 🐟 fillets in the box 📦 not their usual full on can't get it into the box single haddock 🐟, the chips 🍟 were good slight crispy on the outside and soft inside. Although I did notice that the takeaway box 📦 had shrunk somewhat in size to a very small oblong box 📦.
All in all not the best experience we have had at this chippy and at a cost of just under £25. I'll be giving the Wee chippy a try next time we're in Anstruther.

Not quite sure why people rave about this place. The fish and chips are good, but there was almost no fish under my crispy batter.
Seems like I and the rest of the early customers got the odd bits and ends from the previous day… Disappointing really, as there are many other less ‘famous’ fish and chip shops where can get a full fillet and more chips for a lower price.

It has a sunny beer garden out the back that looks down onto a burn.
The place supposedly once housed King James V back in the 1500s.
Definitely worth running up a tab in this tavern, must be one of the oldest pubs in the UK, soak up the history!

Perfect blend of cosy pub and incredible seafood.
I wish I lived closer to this gem. The tagliatelle with haddock and smoked mussels was the best fish dish I’ve ever had. Really fresh ingredients, beautiful flavour and well presented. If I lived just 2 hours away from this place I would drive back just for this dish.
We had the salmon and caviar to start which was also amazing.

We have wanted to try this place for a while after trying to get in by just turning up, but it's always busy. This time, we pre-booked a table. We parked in the street up from the pub and walked down. There was road works on the footpath in front of the pub, which directed pedestrians onto the main road, not very good as this is a busy road. We entered the pub, beware if you are tall, this pub was built years ago, so the lintles are very low. The pub is your classic fisherman's pub, all stone with wooden beams. We were taken to our table, and soon after, a server took our drinks and food order. My Cullen skink was really nice, my wife's soup tasty. Our mains were both sirloin steaks, although not on the menu our server did say there was rib eye available as well. Mine was to be well done. My wife's was medium to well. However, the server mixed these up, and we had to swap plates. My steak seemed to get pinker as I worked my way along it, so not quite well done all the way through. The chips, although salty, were good. We found it to be a bit pricey for the food that was served and the hilarity coming from the kitchen on that night probably contributed to the poorer quality of food. The servers were polite, prompt and well presented but service was let down by the mistake with the steaks. The toilets, although clean, were a bit tired looking and in need of an update. The hand wash and lotion smelled really nice.

We enjoyed a lovely, convivial dinner at the Dreel on Saturday night but I was compelled to post by the level of service we enjoyed given we both had food allergies. I had alerted them at time of booking but they took the time to produce a menu each with food we could eat or could be adapted. The staff made us feel welcome and not a nuisance! We love the Dreel due to it's cosy ambience in Winter and Beer Garden in Summer. We will definitely be troubling them again!

I have been meaning to drop in here for years having driven through Anstruther so many times. It looked traditional and in keeping with its surroundings. Eventually I did. What a lovely experience! Good beer and amazing food. It was a lovely sunny day so we sat outside in the beer garden - such a cosy and chill place. Inside was quaint and welcoming, too. Hidden gem!!! I found in a book a read so we decided to play a quick as our warm up before The Old Course. Best move ever! We could. It believe how scenic it was. Some fun drivable 4’s. 3 really hard par 3’s. So cool!! Highly recommend as a warm up instead of hitting range balls if you have the time.

One of the most memorable and challenging golf courses I played during my two weeks in Scotland. Not just the famous fifth hole but also #2, 6 and 7 due to the small greens, contouring and wind!
Club staff were exceptionally friendly. The greens and bunkers were in excellent condition (better than Old Course). If you’re a a single or twosome, try to get paired up with a member. I was fortunate enough to play with two very hospitable gentlemen. Thanks David and Fraser!

Visited on 11 April expecting to see puffins on the island however when we arrived the warden informed the staff that they had almost all left and went out to sea but luckily I managed to a photo from some distance and was probably the only one on the boat lucky enough to get one. Anyway, despite that it was still a great day out particularly due to the excellent weather we had. The boat cruise was well organised, they expect you to be there about 45 minutes before departure time which varies due to the tides. There is a hut situated on the middle pier next to the RNLI station where you check in and get a boarding card. It is advisable to book in advance as many days will be fully booked during the peak times. The journey time to the island is about 1 hour and the boat carries up to 100 passengers. The boat has a little snack bar selling hot drinks and some souvenirs. There are also toilets on the boat. Beware that the crossing can be a bit choppy and this is exaggerated on the top deck so best to concentrate on the horizon to avoid motion sickness. Depending on conditions the boat will do a little tour and the skipper gives a little commentary over the loud speaker with some useful information and history. We had 2 1/2 hours on the island, I would have liked a bit more time as it’s difficult to cover the whole island in that timeframe especially when stopping to take photos, packed lunch, etc. The return time was clearly displayed as well on our arrival at the island and the staff use a clicker to make sure everyone has returned. The crew were all very professional and friendly and given that I didn’t get to see as much wildlife as I had hoped for it was still a brilliant day out. I will be back in the next couple of months so will keep an eye on how quickly the availability fills up.

Had a very good day sailing out to isle of May, especially as it was a very calm day. The boat was fully booked so be prepared to be very close to other people. The crew were very knowledgeable about all the wild life, coffee and snacks on board. We had two hours on the island,which seems a lot but time flies quickly. Our trip to Isle of May was such an unforgettable experience. The island itself has so much history, not to mention the spectacular views and the wildlife. We wanted to do something different when visiting the Fife coast, and this was it. We really enjoyed our visit to the Isle of May and had a great experience onboard. The skipper and staff were great, and very knowledgable.
The island is great to visit but be mindful of what time of year you go, depending on what you want to see. We just missed out on seeing Puffins by a couple of weeks, which was a shame but there is a lot to see on the island.
There’s a tuck shop onboard with ample selection, if you were hungry or thirsty.
Would visit again, at a different time of year to see different animals.

A lot of expectation on this and absolutely delivered! Food was amazing. Fresh fish with crispy batter. Tasty chips. The smoked haddock a particular treat.
The wait on a cool summer evening was only about 10 minutes but enough to see the final portion of crispy prawns disappear 🙁. The replacement calamari was delicious but no garlic sauce.

We normally go and stand in an enormous queue at one of the other Anstruther chippers but we decided to try the Wee Chippy for a change and have to say it was best fish and chips have had in a long time. We went for the breaded haddock which was lightly battered and not in the least bit greasy. Even managed to get a table in the restaurant, although I think we were a bit lucky as everyone that came in after got turned away so would recommend booking. It’s also dog friendly so will def be our chipper of choice on our next visit to Anstruther.

Had the most delicious Gluten free haddock and chips served with GF bread and butter, a pot of tea and even home made tartare sauce. I can honestly say that it’s the best GF fish and chips I have ever tasted. Separate GF sauces and vinegar too.

The ordering system had stopped working ( a touch screen outside) we went in and ordered waited quite a long time considering it was a chip shop and we only wanted two portions of chips. Stopped here for a night while on the Fife Coastal Path. Great price for what you get. Clean rooms and common areas (truly the most pleasant hostel kitchen I've ever seen), cozy decor, friendly staff. A lovely, clean, quiet hostel right in the heart of Anstruther. The single rooms at the top of the hostel were just delightful. Comfy bed, view out onto the sea, and binos supplied for any bird watching! The shower was great - lots of hot water and good pressure. Would definitely stay here again.

We stayed with our two teens so that we could attend the Pittenweem arts festival. The hostel is right on the water front, and our rooms looked out over the water. Both rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. They both had little sinks right in the room. Linen and towels were provided. There were two shower stalls, a toilet stall and two sinks in the shared area on our floor, which we seemed to only share with one other person. There were also common washrooms beside the lounge area. The lounge had games, couches and chairs, and two coffee tables. The kitchen was open and welcoming with a large central table and a small fridge. We received arrival information well in advance, and had no trouble at all with our booking. A great tour of what they do there, really friendly staff that are more than happy to answer your questions. I loved understanding more of what I'd seen on various media about what they do and what's behind it. I won't ruin anything about the big boat and it's launch trailer but... That's a piece of engineering! Hats off too the people that volunteer for this, it's not easy by any means, it's a tough job. Very happy with the tour, a nice wee day out in Anstruther, a nice gift shop and some great places around to have a wee cake or something after. Visited last week on a booked tour with family, partly so I could view a loved ones name on the new Shannon-class lifeboat, but also to meet the volunteers and have a behind the scenes nosy around the facilities. Very interesting and knowledgeable tour and staff are happy to answer any questions. The equipment, especially the new lifeboat and tractor are really impressive, and the station will be very deserving of their new boat house once complete. We will definitely be back to have a look! Absolutely loved this shop she was made to feel so welcome everyone adored her you can tell the owners really love animals (was great to rest my arms after having to carry her whilst she got a snuggle) I really trusted the people here are so kind and compassionate and I adore Freya so I don't let anyone hold her but you just know in this shop your in safe hands so off she went quite happy . 45 min boat trip to reach the island which is beautiful with loads of puffins, eider ducks, guillemot, razorbills, gannets and other seabirds, seals can be seen too. There are also lighthouses to explore. The guys who man the boat were lovely and very helpful. Terrain is relatively easy going, some hills but not overly steep and you must stick to the paths to avoid disturbing the nesting birds. No cafes or shops on the island so take food and drink although the boat has a small snack bar. We loved this trip which is about 2.5hrs on the island altogether and a great experience for bird enthusiasts.

I received a trip to may isle as a birthday present. Having always wanted to go, my expectations were high, and I wasn't disappointed. Staff are friendly, helpful and attentive. The crossing took less than an hour and was a little rough in a stiff breeze. I would definitely suggest this vessel over the smaller ones if you are a little prone to sickness. The vessel has toilet facilities and even a small shop selling hot and cold drinks and even a stiffer one if required. They also have sweet treats and very popular puffin gifts. On arriving at the island, you are met by wildlife wardens who give a brief talk of the particulars on the island. If nature is what you are seeking this is undoubtedly a breathtaking experience. For around 3 hours we were surrounded by tens of thousands of seabirds of many types. Let's be honest I wanted to see the puffins and explaining what they were like is difficult to put into words. With over 60,000 pairs on the island you are almost surrounded with birds like butterflies in a meadow.

Toilets are ok but 30p to have a pee is a bit excessive. If you can wait go half's with someone else and chip in 15pence each or if you're not that desperate someone might let you in for nowt if they have a radar key. There's showers in here too but the door is locked and you're supposed to be able to get a key from the harbour office but it was closed and no one there on Friday at 3pm. So not sure what time you can use the showers. Nice harbour anyway with boats and things. Some look a little worse for wear but most are ok. Few benches around too so its ok to sit around and watch the seagulls

We had some fish and chips with some mushy peas it was delicious.. a very clean place with a nice friendly atmosphere.. the parking was cheap enough but not many spaces to park..We visited as many shops as we could and bought some Malt whisky.We had nice weather without any rain and the sandy beach was clean and peaceful.We will most definitely visit again soon.

Anstruther is home to its very own Anstruther Model Solar System, which consists of 11 bronze plates located mainly on Shore Street. These plates are spaced out according to the scale of the solar system at 1 to 10 billion and stretch across the town for about 600 meters.
