My recent experience at Sol y Sombra left a lot to be desired. Both on my reservation, and when ordering I told them about my allergies, however they still brought me dishes with those allergens visibly present. When I pointed this out, I was questioned if I have even told the wait staff about this allergy. My bill and the reservation show I did. The dish was then taken away, and when I asked if the other dishes were safe since they were served, and potentially cooked, right next to the allergen containing dish, I was told they 'should be fine'. Other issues: I ordered the same wine twice, and the second time I ordered it the white wine came out red. After the second course, all of our plates were taken and put table was cleared, which we thought meant our service was over, at which point we asked for the bill, got asked to leave a tip, and got ready to leave. Then more food was brought out to us? With no plates or cutlery to eat it with. Later, we then asked for a box to take the food away with, and had all our cutlery taken and plates taken again, so we just had to slide our food off the serving plates into the box. Also, the men's bathroom has no toilet roll holder and instead the toilet paper is kept of a shelf that is sloped, about to fall off the wall, straight towards the toilet. Decor, music and seating arrangement created a nice relaxed atmosphere for a night out. Other two members of our party loved their evening, I did feel that the set menu only format took something away from the tapas experience. For me tapas is all about picking several small dishes of food from the menu and mixing and matching your favourites, enjoying a drink and then ordering some more if you still have room! The set menu format was almost like a tasting menu where you have little control over what food will be served that evening. Point out the flaws even if it a small one. But I seriously couldn't find any with this place. The place inside is beautifully and tastefully decorated. The music is chill, not too loud. The waitress we had was polite, knowledgeable and her Spanish was perfect. The food was mind blowing. I'm very fussy but went with an open mind and a willingness to try new things. I was not disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I didn't like everything, but that's personal choice. The food was high quality, high flavour. The drinks we had were delicious (cocktails of course) we could have had dessert but for the first time in a long time, I was beaten. We got a table after 6 on a Friday night so this is definitely a good spot to go even on a busy night out. Right in the city centre, easy to find and great selection of choices. The hotdogs, pasta, grill and burgers? If you need protein this is a top notch spot to go. I had the chicken burger and my father had the Angus beef burger. They are also super accommodating! The owner/manager is so lovely and assisted us in allergies and intolérances every step of the way. They have gluten free buns, vegan ice-cream (be vary if you have a soy allergy though! And this was after having had many great meals at other restaurants around town. The biggest issue was the service. Our initial server took our order and then completely disappeared. Our drink and food orders eventually arrived, late, but brought out by other servers. We never got the water we asked for until we asked another server for it. And then, once we finished our initial beer/wine/cocktails, we were never asked if we wanted more. It was strange. Not sure if our server took our order and then went on a break. But the service here was definitely lacking. From a food perspective, I got the Smoked Pork Ribs, which were ok, but didn't compare to barbecue you can get back in the states. My wife got the Grilled Chicken Fillet with jerk BBQ sauce and really liked that. Our kids got nachos, which they liked. We also ordered the prawn appetizer along with the fried plantains - both of those were very good. Overall, the food was good. Unfortunately, though, poor service can ruin a good meal.

We orderd 2 starters and 2 mains and sat across from kitchen. Bell rang 3 times when started were ready, we alerted a staff member to the food sitting on counter going cold. They went to get our food and one of the starters was the wrong starter. We kept the halloumi starter which was cold and waited on the other starter (chicken wings) to be cooked. When the chicken arrived we both bit into raw chicken, all the chicken was raw and slimey and a danger to eat! We alerted a waitress who said “ the marinade makes it look that colour” Very insulting. Both mains were mediocre compared to usual and my daughter couldn’t eat her chicken main meal as the raw starter had put her off. The waitress apologised and said she was adjust the £50 bill…… she deducted £3 . Pathetic Terrible experience and won’t be back !!

It was certainly one of the pricier set dinners I had in Dundee but the food did not disappoint, ingredients were fresh and the pasta was made to perfection.

The first thing I didn't like was the food. I ordered a Caesar's salad which by default cannot be bad. However the chicken had a terrible smell. So terrible that I put it aside and after eating fast I asked the waitress to take my plate because it was really smelly. I told that my chicken was smelly and what I got as an answer was something like it is normal because of the plastic wrap. 15 years as a butcher I have seen this smell only to chicken that has gone bad. We sat upstairs and found the service from staff to be friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Starters (risotto and bread with oils) and main meals (duck and steak pie) were very tasty with decent sized portions and well cooked al dente vegetables. First time for me ... but the wife, of course, had three times previously with three different members of her band of cronies, graced this fine pub with her custom and favour.  We had fish, prawns, salad, chips, bread, bannocks and coke that were as good as the best of any pub ... but turned out even better for the rapid first-class manner by which they were served.  The place was spotless and interestingly decorated with more than a nod to Art Deco and The Tay Estuary at the southern end of town. The joint was busy but capably handled by a pair of friendly astute young girls who ably constucted our path through post-lockdown pub attendance with serious aplomb.  All in all, a great success.  It's well refreshing to note that, at least in Royal Arch Land, value for money, creditable cheer, civility and the publican's traditional warm welcome are still around in these truly unconventional times.

We visited here on a Saturday evening - the restaurant was busy but with ample space in between tables - a relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere. As soon as we arrived, with a pram, another door had to be opened, for some reason this involved a 5ft 3 staff member, on a stepladder with a Butter knife. We ordered banana bread and some bacon bagels (apparently they had no rolls.) The chilli sauce too was bland at best and likely used the equivalent amount of sugar that they used of salt on the "chicken". Obviously I never ate this abomination so called back again asking for a refund. Both members of staff I spoke to couldn't care less and just kept repeating the same thing over and over. This place has no idea what food tastes like from the part of the world they pertain to offer. Avoid it at all costs unless you have a salt or sugar deficiency and appreciate awful customer service.

Four of us booked a table for a meal. The entrance to the hotel looks superb, it was quiet, warm and inviting but strangely no-one about. It wasn't until we went up the stairs to the dining room that we eventually were approached by a server. We were taken to our table and placed our orders for food and drinks. The dining area was really nicely decorated, quiet and comfortable. All the food that was served to the table was excellent, couldn't fault any of it, delicious. The only thing that let the evening down was the service. Don't get me wrong the servers were polite and well presented and interacted with us in a pleasant manner (when they eventually came to the table) but we lost count how many times we had to grab the attention of a server to ask for drinks then wait 15-20 minutes plus before the drinks were brought to the table. Sometimes after asking, we had to ask another member of staff because the first had forgotten to come back. With the cocktails at an average of £17 each that's a lot of revenue the hotel is loosing, we could of happily bought another three or four each during our meal but for the slow service. This is a really nice place to bring someone as a treat or on a special occasion but the service has to be better to justify the higher cost. The toilets were clean and tidy.

Room was nice, clean and initial impressions were positive. At time of check in there was some noise coming from what appeared to be an event in the function suite which was directly below the room. Myself and my wife went out for food and drinks and enjoyed our time in Dundee. However upon return to the room shortly after 11pm there was loud music that could be heard throughout the room which was either coming from the function suite or the bar (not belonging Malmaison) that sits below this section of the building. Due to having unpacked we decided to try and tolerate this... Loud bass noise continued to around 2am. To compound this noise the room we were in was not great as there appeared to be a main drainage pipe for the building located within one of the walls and there was loud and repeated noises coming from it as water and waste moved through them. The location of the room again is not helpful as you are directly at the top of the stairs and as such there was a lot of footfall coming and going throughout the evening causing noise and banging doors. The room in itself was adequate, bed and duvet comfortable but pillows too soft and unsupportive. Staff could have been more supportive as whilst we didn't raise issues throughout the night I did raise them at check out which didn't particularly receive any kind of acknowledgement or apology and instead was solely met with the question... 'otherwise, your stay with us was good?' which I thought was a poor and disinterested response.

The hotel is in a fantastic location. We were 12 golfers and were able to access several courses in the region. The hotel is downtown with several pubs/shops nearby in walking distance. The room was very well equipped. Bed very comfortable. Bathroom excellent. Only issue was with air cooling... The hot breakfasts every morning were fantastic. Our servers were fabulous. Restaurant could use an additional coffee machine to handle peak time. We also enjoyed a private dinner. It was excellent. Amazing afternoon tea, sublime soup, carrot cake to die for, and fantastic food. It saved the culinary aspect of our Scottish vacation.

I was immediately shown to a quiet table by an attractive & well turned-out female member of staff, named Kim, who took my order without delay. Because I was running late, I only had time for a bowl of soup and a cappuccino. These were served up extremely quickly. The soup was delicious & very satisfying. I had to ask to have my seat swapped as the one I had was very uncomfortable with broken springs. This was done quickly and the waiter told me they are going to be replacing the seats. Our starters were chicken liver pate with toast - this is simply two small pieces of toasted bread with a small bit of pate and olive on top served with cranberry jam. I feel this portion could have been bigger. The other starter was shrimp in spicy tomato sauce and this was a very generous amount of shrimps in a lovely sauce and 2 pieces of toasted bread - this was delicious. For mains, we both had chicken and mushroom in mustard sauce. Although I couldn't taste any mustard, the chicken and sauce was really tasty. What let this dish down really badly was that it was served with frozen chips! Not very Italian, and even a small portion of vegetables would have been a far better option. I don't eat chips so these were wasted and there wasn't an alternative to choose from on the menu. There were 5 of us. The waitress was very friendly but we were met with a list of things which were unavailable - prawns, steak and haggis. When the food arrived it was mediocre - the steak and ale pies were a little chewy on the meat front, the steak was barely medium cooked and one of the gravy boats was sent back as it was one, large, gelatinous mass. Desserts, in all fairness, were good. We were already booked in for breakfast - the continental. The fruit platter consisted of three sad looking bananas and we think an orange... may have been a satsuma. The cereal choice was OK, the yoghurts were tasty. The staff were, again very friendly but we did see food being sent back to the kitchen on the evening we were there. Overall the place looks like it is overdue a refurbishment, clean and better lighting. We didn't eat there again because of our disappointment and whilst the hotel location was great if we returned we would be going out for breakfast/evening meals.

Have been going here for years although don’t manage to get in regularly because it’s a bit out of the way. Stopped today for lunch and had a delicious meal. I started with squid while my partner had the bang bang cauliflower. Great parking facilities, wheelchair accessible. Didn't have a booking and walked and quickly seated. We were served drinks and food came quickly, even though they were fairly busy.
