My husband and I popped in on the off chance as this was one of his haunts in his younger days, the staff were so accommodating and we had a delicious meal. I first came across this garden in a lovely book "Secret gardens of Somerset" beautifully written (Abigail Willis) and with superb photographs (Clive Boursnell).The garden is very compact, a small garden to the side of the house and a woodland garden to the West with views of Porlock bay. I wanted to photograph the Azaleas and Rhododendrons and they did not disappoint, they are stunning.
However this garden is tricky to photograph. Like most plants Azaleas and Rhododendrons do not photograph well in sunlight/anything approaching bright light (petals will look burnt out) you will lose saturation. On the other hand light very quickly drops to a low level in this garden. To get the best images choose a day with no direct sunlight or wait for the shade to come across the top garden. With digital cameras opt for a higher ISO setting (this increases the sensitivity of the sensor) and unlike the old 35mm film you will not notice any grain. You can now even do this on some phones. Shoot keeping any sky totally out of the viewfinder, this will expose for the lush greens and the colours will "pop". If you shoot RAW, add light (0.3 of an F stop) in processing but add a touch of saturation to compensate.
I hope you can tell from the images, I absolutely loved this garden. It is soft, gentle and intimate. It is an old fashioned sentiment but I feel it has been a privilege to be able to photograph it, I will definitely be back.

Small but very pretty gardens, near Porlock. Lovely views from the gardens to the sea. Takes about 30 to 40 minutes to walk around, on average. It is a long thin plot with paths on several levels. We took about 45 minutes, but stopped for photos and to look at things in detail. Beautiful rhodedendrons and azaleas. Quite shady woodland paths, some covered in moss which are a bit slippery in places.

Great beach, very quiet and so beautiful, would recommend parking at NT Bossington and walking down,it's a short walk on good paths. The beach is purely pebbles of every size which could be hard going if you're not fully mobile or have a pushchair etc. There is a path that runs for most of the way behind the beach which is easier going and means you can hop onto the beach wherever you fancy instead of walking on the pebbles all the time. So much to see and find here, we found an octopus (sadly not alive) and loads of cuttlefish bone and obviously you have the lime kiln and pill boxes.
A word of warning please don't be tempted to go in the water and this probably applies to dogs off lead too. The current is very powerful and the pebbles very loose underfoot on dry land so underwater would be extremely risky. Our pooch is very much used to swimming in this kind of scenario and always on a long lead, please don't be tempted just enjoy the beauty of what is around you.

A little hard to find, go out of the car park over the bridge (behind the 'you are here' map) and turn left. Follow the path up and around through woods then it'll thin out, you'll see a national trust 'stump' in the middle of the path and to your left is the gate that takes you to the beach.

Beautiful location, very quiet as only accessible on foot. The beach has lots of 'shelves' and is very pebbly - with big pebbles at that. This isn't a complaint as it's nature, but not so suitable for families wanting a dip in the sea. Walk along the beach and you'll see a pool formed by the River Horner which then makes its way underneath the pebbles. Check out the concrete pill boxes left behind from the war. There's a couple, both of which you can go in.

Very disappointed with our takeaway meal from this place.
My husband walked down from the campsite to purchase a takeaway and was told cash only so as he only had his phone to pay, he returned to the campsite to inform me of the situation.
8 then walked into the village to get cash out of the machine and order our food.
I was told it would not be ready until 8.10pm ( over an hour and half wait). I asked if I needed to pay upfront but was told no.
I agreed and returned to the campsite to wait.
My husband then returned at said time to pick up our order.
I ordered the seafood box and chips.
The whole meal looked and tasted like it was cheap, nasty over fried in old oil food. Absolutely disgusting and I couldn't eat it ( gave it to my dogs).
Hubbies was just as bad, he couldn't eat the brown shrivelled chips.
A very long wait involving ×3 trips too and fro from campsite to chippy for nothing.
I might also add that the owner was a miserable so n so who blatenently had no sense of humour and made me feel that I was an inconvenience for stepping into the chippy to attempt making an order.

My wife and I had lunch here 26th September and were so impressed with the high quality of food (All Home Made To Order), service and styling of the tea room, added to that classical music playing too.
In a perfect spot with Porlock's car park a short distance away. On recommendation from Shaun I had their speciality Whortleberry Cake, which was so good, I bought a jar of Whortleberry Jam.

They’ve recently re opened after a winter close down where they’ve spent a lot of time and money changing the layout and facilities at the gardens.

Four friends out for a cycle ride looking for a morning coffee and cake. What a wonderful surprise to come across Kitnors Tea Room In the beautiful village of Bossington. We entered to be greeted with the most beautifully landscaped gardens and a fabulous outside seating area amongst mature apple trees and a lovely giant wooden sculpture of a rabbit which gave the garden a fantastic focal point not forgetting the beautiful views out across the moors. We visited this tea room a few times recently whilst on holiday. It is an absolutely gorgeous little place with beautiful peaceful gardens and an undercover area if raining. FABULOUS & DELICIOUS. Anita took all the catering cares away from my shoulders for a 7 day retreat that I ran in May 2021. The catering is VITAL to me to ensure a successful retreat, and is not something that I have the time, energy, or wherewithal to undertake myself.
I'd never tried Anita's cooking before I booked her (I live in London and Covid restrictions meant I couldn't do a trip to check) but she'd been recommended by the local tourist information as one of my options and on the phone and with the sample menu she sent me I felt like I was in good hands.
I run the retreat as vegetarian and we had people with gluten and dairy intolerances - none of which phased Anita at all, we still had a fabulous, varied, heart-warming and healthy variety of meals with attention to detail and 'the trimmings' that meant everyone felt included.
We were delighted - every meal was tasty and wholesome and made my attendees very happy. The homemade crumpets and cakes kept our need for comfort well satisfied and the main meals were well thought out, nutritious and delicious - and plentiful too (there's nothing worse than doing big emotional cleansing work and then being left hungry after meals - this was never a problem!)
These photos don't really do Anita's food justice - I will do better next time I run the retreat - and have requested her for next year already.
PS - I also popped to the cafe on my way out of town and tried one of their meaty pasties ..... I'll be going back for more of that too!

The whole team were welcoming and friendly, couldn’t do enough for us. Our room was very spacious, perfect with the dogs!

Perfect welcoming place to go to. We phoned to book in because we have a rescue anxious dachshound who literally barks at every dog which can be difficult when wanting to eat out. The very kind gentleman on the phone said he would place us in the restaurant area because it's was quieter there for us. When we got here just after 6pm we realised they had shut a part of the restaurant area off for us so we could peacefully eat dinner together with no issues. The food was lovely and the puddings were also very tasty and the portions were generous too. Definitely would recommend to anyone who needed that extra support with a nervous pup and looking for good food.

I was looking forward to trying some English Ale however the glass of Tribute that I was served was very cloudy and flat. It did not taste very nice. I took this back to the bar but the lady said it was okay. I could not drink it, so left it on the bar. Shortly afterwards a scruffy looking bald headed man came into the bar and started pumping from the section from where my drink was served. My English friend said that I must have been served the "end of the barrel" as a new one was being pulled through. Why would I have been served something undrinkable?

Very poor and unprofessional bar service. Visited on the afternoon of Monday 25 August with family. Although the bar area was not busy we witnessed several customers come into the bar and was waiting patiently at the far end to be served. As someone who runs a Pub myself, I wonder if this member of staff has received any training at all? Can’t recommend more to go there and spend a day or two in the farm. The place is so unique abs with a character!
The house dates somewhat 600 years old and has absolutely special vibe. We stayed at Foxden room with private bathroom and we’re very pleased with our stay. The room is lovely, all perfectly clean.
We had hawks and owl experience, owls are so magnificent! It worth to see them all in the Owl Garden.
We were touched by Cathy’s warm welcome and attention, and also by her Inspirational Barn with the story of her life and how she created the place as it is now.
For riders there are horses, we only shorted saw them in the stables which was also a great experience. All are different and beautiful.
And great breakfast too! Very much recommend!

Whilst staying in Minehead for a holiday, we booked to do an hours private owl flying experience at Exmoor Owl & Hawk Centre.
We started off by being invited to visit all of the birds they keep at the centre in their own enclosures (they have around 30+!).
We were then taken into a private barn where we got to fly three birds each, and learnt loads of new facts about them and how they behave in the wild.
It was a really brilliant experience and something you don’t get to normally do when visiting bird centres. The experience leader was really friendly and very informative.
We then we’re invited over to the stables to meet the horses and a lovely lady who who worked there told us all about them and let us meet them up close.
100% would recommend to anyone who loves birds and wants to try something a bit different!

Went to Porlock on a whim to escape the house on 30 December hoping to find somewhere for a coffee and found this place open (this was the only non-pub). We ordered a cream tea each (in December!) and it was completely delicious! The scone was still warm and the cream was very good. The flavour of the Whortleberry jam was amazing. My partner said the coffee was very good. It was a nice light place to sit and hear the wind whistle. Their range of cheese was very good (my partner's mum had struggled to get Cornish Yarg before Christmas but this shop had some) and their chutneys and jam range was fantastic (we came away with 2 chutneys!) The gentleman serving was very good, nothing too much trouble - left us alone while we ate but just as happy to chat afterwards. With just 3 tables I think you would struggle to get in in the busy months but would thoroughly recommend trying!

I stayed here with my nan recently, we went for days out independently as opposed to joining walking groups. Despite not joining them, we were made to feel part of the team and joined in with the evening entertainment and sat socially at dinner. I wasn't sure about this at first however I soon got to know each individual and we spent the week telling each other about our days out. The accomodation was small and cosy, great shower and comfy beds. All the staff were highly accomodating and friendly making effort to ensure everyone has a great time despite the usual issues of being short staffed, you wouldn't have noticed. The food was delicious, of wedding qaulity and the kitchen staff were punctual so no one is left waiting. This was a great experience and as a 27yr old I'd encourage more young people to go as you'll have a great time!

We are National Trust members and are visiting various sites in the Exmoor area. The Holnicote estate is huge so we picked a couple of places within. Horner has a great woodland walk, good for dogs, the Tea Garden there is privately run, their coffee is packets you add water to ugh! Food average. On to Bossington, quaint cottages, tea garden with proper coffee and great scones. Local beach consists of massive pebbles piled up into a rampart worth a look but don't expect a beach.

I must admit I was disappointed in this. The areas included in the Holnicote estate are beautiful for hiking but the house and park itself, although lovely, does not offer much and we turned back to some of the hiking tracks and towns around after a short visit.
