Most of the hands on displays were interesting.but each area was a little sparse. Seem like they could have a little more stuff but it could be the miserable day and not being in season . The spindle guy was awesome. He seemed to like his job. Let everybody have a hand that turn a spindle if they wanted to. I forgot what the lady was showing back there but but she was really pleasant and helpful too. Blacksmith was a little snarky with people and refused to give a young kid one of the handmade nails, like he gave one of the adults. The prk was empty so it wasn't like he was having to give them to a bunch of people and he had a whole bowl. Just thinking He didn't handle the request nicely. Love that! Had a penny press The gift store didn't have too much stuff in it, but also understand that it was out of season but the clerk in the store was really friendly and nice. Enjoyed looking at the ship. The guy working on the top part of the ship wasn't quite as forthcoming when you ask questions but the guy in the bottom. He was amazing. Told us all about the ship and the different stuff on it. And we could ask all kinds of questions and he really knew his stuff and acted like he enjoyed answering our questions.. But it was a nice afternoon PS: It also was a cold damp, windy miserable day

It is a free museum with minimal exhibits. If your kiddo likes wooden boats, this has several full scale smaller boats for you to look, see, and touch. It has some cool historical tools and a lovely little guest book. I also enjoyed the cool water fountain. In the wide open space, allowing the breeze for the day to flow on through. They also had some excellent relaxing chairs in the porch. We enjoyed this spot, and learned a bit about shipbuilding tools, new and old. I believe they also do some sailing classes as they had a great setup.

However, this was our first time touring with Captain Johnny. By far, it was the best experience we have had on any of our vacations. We likely saw 25 dolphins, young and older, swimming in pairs and frolicking together in larger pods. We also had a brief sprinkle during our sunset tour that provided a great rainbow for the family to enjoy. Johnny also returned the boat to the docks through the marshes, so we got to see a different part of the sound that we had never experienced before. The crew was helpful and courteous. They shared much about the area, the hunting lodge, the pelican island and the Bodie lighthouse. They were also quick to answer any of our questions. It was a great experience and we will definitely return to Captain Johnny's for our next dolphin tour in OBX.

It was amazing to see how big the garden was. I could have done without all the orb weaver spiders but luckily we survived. Even though I cam during an off season I still think it was a nice experience because I have never been anywhere like this before.

There was one group there when we arrived who were just leaving and we didn’t encounter another group until we were leaving about a hour later. • They do have the Blue Goose Stamps here specifically for Pea Island NWR and Alligator River NWR. The store here had merch from several of the local NWR, similar to those over at Pea Island. • This is a must stop location for sure. It’s right across the street from the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site but had so many fewer people. • The store had a ton of merch in it similar to Pea Island NWR. • The exhibits in here are the BEST of any National Wildlife Refuge we’ve been too. It’s up there with Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery in KY and Waccamaw NWR in SC. The kids spent a good 20 mins doing ALL of the aerial tours in the “plane simulator”. We also watch over 30 mins of the videos in their 4-D theater. Beware once you selected one video you must watch through the entire thing before selecting the next one. I would strong suggest doing them in order from top to bottom. It was just amazing. So many interactive and hands on exhibits. See pictures in my review. • We were short on time and we unable to do the hiking trails outside the visitor center but we would certainly visit again to do those.

We stopped at the visitor center for information and a map, and were on our way! On the drive, we saw three bears, a beautiful crane, and lots of flowering lilly pads.
