The guacamole seemed days old and brown with overfried chips and "salsa" that tasted like tomato sauce from a can. The street corn my partner got was old and brown and seemed like it had been rolled in ranch rather than real cojita. The only thing that was passable at this restaurant was the drinks because they actually did not water down the alcohol. I imagine they pre-make a lot of their food and it sits for days in the fridge before someone orders it. All the food seemed old, past freshness, no spice, no flavor. Beans and rice came also came with my tacos but I did not touch it because there were random hunks of old dried meat in it (see corn pic)? We stopped here to eat before our concert. Love the outside seating at the front of the building. What a cool vibe. We ate inside, which had a fun, funky vibe as well. I don't love the taste of liquor so I didn't love it, but it was a huge hit with the rest of the group. Highly recommend this restaurant if your are in the area. The atmosphere is a great representation of the local area and serves amazing, fun and unusual dishes utilizing fresh catch/local fare. Mid level price and fun and trendy decor.

We enjoyed drinks at the tiki bar outside (complete with great live music) before being seated right at our reservation time. The main dining area is well appointed, with nice views of the docks and marina below. The dressing had an excellent flavor, though there was a bit too much dressing on the salad for my taste. The views from the enclosed porch are amazing looking out at the docks. The cocktails are well made and the food and fish are fresh and delicious. I am 3 years sober, and was happy to have found a single mocktail on their lmenu, but when I asked about an unknown ingredient, the waiter told me, “yeah I wouldn’t know” and walked away. We were brought our meals pretty quickly, which was nice, but in my husband’s words, “It looks like it came from a retirement home cafeteria” (pics attached). We both ordered off of the fresh Saturday specials menu (that they posted on their social media that day); mine was yellowtail served with scalloped potatoes and squash and his was tilefish on top of grits…except they weren’t. I was served a gray, watery, undercooked tuna steak with mashed sweet potatoes and sliced pickles and onions sitting in a bowl of vinegar. I didn’t know what my husband ordered, so I asked him if his soup was good, only to discover it wasn’t soup (check the picture). I asked the waiter, “wasn’t this supposed to come with scalloped potatoes?” He said, “I don’t know, did you read the description?” I didn’t have the menu still, so I said nevermind, but when checking it later on their social media, I saw I was right. My husband managed to stomach some bites of his food, and my toddler ravenously ate their fries; I didn’t eat anything. As soon as we got back to our hotel 30 minutes away, my perfectly healthy husband and son had explosive diarrhea. I asked the local barista where to go and without hesitation he said, "Cedar Cafe". He told us that they had the best chef in the area and served fresh local food which piqued our interest for sure. She was born and raised in the area and had wonderful things to say. When I asked her what she would eat if she were sitting down for dinner, she offered two suggestions without hesitation and I ordered one. The Snowy Grouper was fantastic, the sides were also phenomenal! I loved that they told us who caught the fish that day in the menu. Everyone enjoyed their meal. When we left, we noticed their pesticide free vegetable garden where they grow their own produce to use in their dishes. It doesn't get fresher than that! We look forward to our next visit for sure.

However if you’re looking for good, down-home seafood dinner, Sam & Omie’s is a must visit. The interior and tables give the place a rustic feel, matching its storied history on Nags Head. We stopped in for dinner around 7pm on a Saturday. No wait and we were seated straight away. It was our server’s second day, a fact we never would have known had she not dropped it on casual conversation. Service was great! I had the crab dip for an appetizer and broiled crab cakes with collard greens and black beans and rice for my entree. Both were excellent, though the crab cakes felt a bit on the small side with heavily shredded crab meat whereas I often prefer slightly larger chunks or crab meat in a crab cake. Since we had a party of 10, we did call ahead seating, calling at 9:30am to get on the list for 5:45pm. We arrive at 5:45pm and were promptly seated. While it was a bit noisy, there was ample space and we never felt crowded despite being in the room with probably 80 others. The table setting, while simple, was very nice with crisp white linens. The service was very prompt, and several guests in our party were able to customize their orders to get exactly what they wanted. I ordered a side salad to start and the stuffed flounder, which came with mashed potatoes and green beans, as the entree. The salad was fresh and refreshing. The flounder, stuffed with crab meat and covered with a sherry cream sauce, was perfect as ever. Note that it does have a fairly strong sherry flavor, which I loved, but may not be for everyone. We return yearly to Tale of the Whale for its outstanding service and consistently good food. We’ll be back next year!

We have a handicapped daughter with special dietary needs, and Jesus, our server, checked her allergies with the chef. Hands done some of the best fish I have ever had. We bought multiple types from them to cook at home and WOW, so yummy. We also got some boiled shrimp from them to go. This dish is way better than the sandwich. SERVICE: You order & pay at the counter and your food is delivered. The guys in there were very patient and helpful. OVERALL: Nice views, prices are average, portions are generous. Pass on the sandwiches and stick to the grilled & fried items.

I was disappointed with O’Neals this time around, but in that bad experience, I found this place. Gentleman inside was super nice and patient. We ordered a half bushel of oysters and waited literally 5 minutes whereas I’ve had to order and wait a day at other fish markets before. Not only have the prices gone up the quantity of food and quality has gone done. We got the Whalebone and it only came with 2 crab legs. Everything was overcooked where the tuna, scallops and sausage were barely eatable. It’s supposed to feed 4 people and cost $260 before the fees they charge you on top of this. And they didn’t even give us cornbread with it like that have in the past. We will definitely have to reconsider where we get our boil next year if this is the new standard :(
