Unfortunately, it’s not a priority on upkeep for the island. I assume it would be costly to preserve it and bring it back to life. There’s no tourists there because it’s not listed as a top site to be seen (for obvious reasons) so it’s very peaceful and quiet. You can leisurely walk around at your own pace. My favorite part of this park was the mosaic artwork in the sidewalk (I didn’t take pictures of them all). I know it had to be absolutely beautiful when it was first placed. It’s a must-see if you love old art. Who knows how long it will be there! Sadly, the lack of upkeep has prevented them from sustaining the weather / natural elements and visitors. You can see in my photos that pieces are missing and the colors have dulled over time. There’s broken benches, fountains not running (I assume they don’t work), and other areas that were once nice are now just sitting. There’s statues around the park of important government and military officials. One has no name and a noose around his neck — I will have to look into why that was an important figure at the time. Several hens, roosters, and chickens roam around the park. There’s a building in this park that I’m sure was beautiful a long, long time ago. I included one photo here, but I have additional photos I am posting separately on that landmark. One current thing that is there, is a small kids area. They can play on the newer equipment. I didn’t think to take a picture of that. My advice — go see it before it’s gone!!!

Our guides, Danny and Diego (D&D), were absolutely amazing! The landscapes are beautiful, and each food stop is top tier. You may not even find these gems without knowing the area or going on this tour. My only warning is for those with mobility or other medical issues. It's all walking with hills and uneven walkways, which can be a bit strenuous for those with difficulty walking, asthma, etc. The first stop was a little café where we tried a Puerto Rican take on a ham and cheese croissant with a delicious jam in the center. Followed by a beautiful shot of espresso and cream. This was a great place to start off the tour because it definitely piqued my taste buds. The second stop was actually the historical aspect where we sat in a little park that overlooked a nice view of the water and some land across the way. There, we were taken on a little trip into the past that led up to where Puerto Rico currently is now. Our guides were very knowledgeable and knew how to keep everyone's attention. Plus, being accommodating and making sure to attend to every person on the group. Their personal connections helped immensely in understanding a lot of the architecture, history, social and economic climates, and more. Something you may not get with another generic tour. The next food stop was at a very cozy restaurant where we made our very own mofongo. It was fun to do and tasted amazing! I was disappointed we couldn't take the leftovers back on the ship, but that wasn't on the tour group's fault. They even wished we could taste the mofongo on the 2nd day because the flavors melt into each other. To pair with the mofongo, we had a refreshing frozen piña colada. Apparently, there are two types, which I didn't know before going on the tour. Lastly, we headed back to the little park with the benches and wrapped up with a cooling passion fruit popsicle. It was a great way to end the tour and finish up a hot day in Puerto Rico. But this office exceeded the high bar already in my mind from years of using this company. We sailed in on the Windstar Pride. They called the day before we landed to confirm our reservation and our pick up at the pier. When we debarked they had a direct line to the office we could call to make sure we met up with the driver. They came so quickly we were very pleasantly surprised. And all the staff were fluently bilingual which really helps as our Spanish is rusty. At the office the agents were so welcoming and friendly. What a great start to our 10 days in PR! The icing on the cake was upon returning the car. Of course the desk staff were efficient. The young man who drove us back to our hotel (gosh I wish I know his name. But he was the employee who was driving his dad’s red mustang bc his car was getting repaired) was just the best. His stories about what happen his car and the stories about his dad’s cars were funny and enlightening. It was barely a 5 minute ride and we’ve already been here 9 days but it was the best experience we had the whole visit with a local. Thanks Enterprise!

Apparently, there is a public restroom crisis in Old San Juan whereby we were told by multiple restaurants that "there is no water in San Juan". There was no surprise as to why I was there as we walked right by him when we entered. Sadly, unlike the first security guard, he was NOT welcoming and there was no need to be so pugilistic. So, with out arguing or fussing I went to the entrance to wait for my family. In my minds eye, I would not even be in there if there was a public restroom to use in the city. So, Mr. Mayor if you are reading this I ask of you to check your staff's attitudes towards the general public as representatives of your government, sort out your restroom issues in your city and provide the basic fundamentals of sanitation to your citizenry and visitors. I mean it is 2022 after all I would post more pictures of this historic building that was commissioned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940, but...THIS AREA IS CLOSED.
