The 7mi “lake front loop” (refer to the trail map) is pleasing if you enjoy the scenic water views and access to the mile marker benches to stretch, rest and refuel. Personally, I got turned around a few times due to the trail splitting into different directions at times with no identifiable trail marker of what the paths led to. So instead of the advertised 7mi it became a 8.3mi hike for me. I went in March after some heavy rain and thunderstorms in the preceding week. There were trail markers down and 3 areas with large fallen trees blocking the path requiring off-trail hikes into the wood brush or climbing over the fallen tree trunks. The trail appears quite enjoyable for mountain bike riding and I may try that later in the Spring. There are several other trails (Heyward, Upper, Peninsula…) that intersect so studying the map before hand may be useful. Trail map sign only at the parking lots. Be sure to grab a picture if you're venturing off the main trail. Multiple side peninsula trails take you closer to the water. Similar upper trails go into the forest away from the reservoir. Can be done as easy out and back smaller trails on either side of the lake. Not crowded despite the great weather, probably because of all the options available nearby. Worth the hour long drive from Richmond for me. Solo early fall clockwise hike of the 7 mile lake front loop trail plus the rocky peninsula trail, retracing the trail before the bridge, and some segment of the upper trail . Helpful hiker shouted to me when I went back on the upper trail instead of Go forward on the lake front trail. How I wished he could have helped me when I went back on the bridge and did an extra mile or more. A trail map would have been a huge help. Without it, I assumed the supposedly swinging bridge (it didn't for me) across the lake is a shortcut and I went back looking for a trail around the inlet. Plenty of spots at 9am on the lower lot. Saw a handful of people on the first 2 hours. More folks past 11am. Mile marker scout benches very helpful for the main trail, though mile numbers have faded away - Oct 2025. Took me 4+ hours for 9+ miles. Rocky peninsula trail with overgrown bushes has the best 360 view of the area on top of a rock. No facilities except a portapotty at the upper lot - end of trail on the clockwise loop. Thankfully all the trails were open, though I had seen on a website some might be closed and I had backup trail options like the Ivy Creek and the Saunders-Monticello trails.
