Ram Jhula just blew my mind away. This bridge is built in Rishikesh. There are 3 ways to look at Ram Jhula.
First is from the point of architecture. It's a piece of art. This suspension bridge over the river Ganga tells you so much about India. There are thousands of people using it every day and it is working perfectly.
Second is from the point of beauty. You can enjoy the views of the river Ganga and ghats from this bridge. The views during the morning, evening sunset and night are all beautiful in their own ways. You can just keep admiring the beauty of the area around.
Third is from the spiritual point. Ram Jhula is named after the Lord Ram. This bridge connects the spiritual part of Rishikesh from the main road. Gole Market is a neighborhood in the heart of New Delhi, India built within a traffic roundabout by Edwin Lutyens in 1921. It is one of New Delhi's oldest surviving colonial markets and is considered an architecturally significant structure. In the years that followed, the Connought Place shopping area was built adjacent to it, catering to the daily needs of thousands of government employees living in nearby residential areas built for them in 1925. These employees worked at the nearby Secretariat Building, as most government offices had relocated from Old Delhi a decade before the new capital had been inaugurated in 1931. Many of the employees were brought into the new capital from distant parts of India, including the Bengal Presidency and Madras Presidency.
After the partition of India, noted painter B.C.Sanyal and his wife Snehlata, a ghazal singer and actress moved to Gole Market. Their "refugee studio" became a hub for artists and students in New Delhi and was later known as Gallery 26. The studio later gave rise to the Delhi Shilpi Chakra, which Sanyal founded with several of her artist friends. This organisation had an important influence on the contemporary art of North India.
By the turn of the 21st century, 28 shops operated in the market, most of them dating back to the 1920s. They included numerous confectioneries, sweet shops, and fast-food restaurants, including Kaleva, Bengali Sweet Shop, Karachi Sweet Shop, and several meat shops. Over the years, the facade deteriorated as a result of unauthorized construction and additions and was in a state of disrepair. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) fined several shopkeepers for operating without proper licenses or for unhygienic conditions.
In 2007, the building was declared unsafe and the NDMC offered shopkeepers alternative shops but they rejected this plan. This forced the NDMC to engage in restoration work. Later, the NDMC proposed granting full heritage status to the building and ending all commercial activities. The traffic police supported the move because running a market in the busy roundabout caused traffic congestion. By May 2009, eviction notices were served to the shopkeepers by the NDMC, which soon had six shops in its possession. The rest of the owners started a campaign against the forced move.
Later, the NDMC revealed new plans to convert the heritage market into a museum. Very nice collection at affordable price but the behaviour of staff is really poor. If you ask them to show something even in very polite tone, they reply you rudely. They literally insults customers. I really wanted to complain about the staff behaviour but there was no one I could address to, hence writing the review. I have spent years of my life living in India—seven, to be exact. Masala is a huge part of life; one of the most critical daily resources, and yet, one of the most difficult to locate in pure form. Even when you are well adept in a kitchen and a spice cabinet, sourcing is never easy—you can spend all the time in the world perusing the biggest wholesale spice markets without ever being really sure that the items you’re sampling will make it into the bag at the quality and price and amount you have agreed upon.
This could never happen at Amit Ji’s shop. He knows exactly what he’s talking about. His prices are fair. The quality of his products is truly unparalleled in all aspects. Both his whole spices and blended masalas are spectacular. And the cherry? His fine selection of teas. You can find everything from Ayurvedic herbal blends to fun “traditional” green and black varieties—many with real dried fruits. You can even smell it all from outside as you walk past.
I have certainly found my spice and masala purveyor—as long as they stay in business, I will be a customer.
