Throughout our weekend we found ourselves back at Jade Fountain three times and worked our way through everything on the menu, revisiting some of our favorites along the way. As one might guess from the name, this cocktail lounge is in a former Chinese restaurant. The feel is certainly there but the walls are also filled with wonderful and weird. There's so much to look at and explore. The space is huge. Three large rooms allow for plenty of spirit sipping spaces. The bar area and lounge, a chill middle section with seating comfortable chairs, and an area with a pingpong table towards the bathrooms. There'll be no shortage of conversation as your eyes constantly find new things wandering the walls. Jade Fountain Cocktail Lounge is an absolutely awesome spot to stop. Wonderful drinks, great people, and cool decor, they'll certainly be a spot we go to every visit to Duluth.

It is buried inside the old brewery which now hosts several businesses. The tap room is in the old barrel room which is a great environment for having a beer or two. If you have a big group they have some overflow space. We were visiting from Minneapolis and stayed here in a big/double bed. The service was great, the bed was super comfy and clean, and most importantly, everyone was kind, interesting and respectful. The space is awesome! The back patio/deck is cozy and feels private enough to relax but open to meeting other folks staying from all over. I have stayed in a lot of hostels (used to live in Rome, and that's how folks travel over there) and this had all the good qualities of a European hostel - the kitchen is up-to-date, clean and has everything you need; people are social but doin' their own thing, and it's right in the heart of the city, walking distance from canal park and lots of great bars and restaurants. There's ample safe/off-street parking behind the hostel. We didn't use the sauna and cold plunge this time, but we plan to come back in the winter to try it out - it was pretty and clean. We walked over to a brewery where there was good live music and an arts fair happening, and down to the lake to have a picnic. I will say: if you are someone who needs a lot of privacy or has a super weird sleep schedule this might not be the right fit; it's a curtain that separates your space from shared (but quiet, not-gathering) space. I stayed in Hostels in Europe before and was expecting a similar experience, but it was not even close. The Europe Hostels were 10 times better. We arrived a little late, but still before the time that they say you need self check in and I could not find anyone to help us. In fact, as far as I could tell there was never anyone at the front desk at any time during our stay (even when leaving in the morning). We found a sheet with my name on it and the location of our bunk in the main building (not the annex). Then we just wandered around to find our bunk. That was not too difficult, but our lockers were being used by the guests in the bunk that was shared space with us and they explained that the staff told them that was okay and had given them the code or something. Luckily we had only two small bags and so could stuff our things into the cubby, but if we had needed it, that would have been a problem. There were also no towels anywhere the entire time we were there, so if we had needed a shower we would have been out of luck. We also could not make use of the other facilities due to this. The bathrooms were not terrible, but not very clean and I was kind of glad I did not need a shower. The bed was reasonably comfortable in our double bunk and my wife and I slept ok when we did finally fall asleep. However, it took a while because someone was walking around singing angrily about someone else who was snoring, and there was some banging and other things going on. I cannot believe this place cost more than 100 bucks for the night. It was significantly cheaper than the hotels around, but I would gladly pay 2 or 3 times as much to stay elsewhere next time. I will never stay here again. It was an experience, just not a good one.
