I know it was closed for a time during COVID, but being back in Australia, I was excited to re-visit Mullumbimby sushi and was glad to see it show up in the search results for “best restaurant Mullumbimby”. Izakaya Yu was a delightful experience that I encourage you to book in for dinner and enjoy some great Japanese food in a laid back setting. The staff were welcoming and attentive, making sure our dining experience was pleasant. The menu offered a variety of traditional Japanese dishes, and we decided on the some Lotus Chips, Miso Soup, and we got the Yu Yu Roll and Eggplant and Tofu mains to share. My son got the Karaage Chicken and some tuna and avocado rolls. I like being able to see the kitchen teams work and at one point the chef ran over to give me an extra spoon for Miles which showed real teamwork and great service which we appreciated. The Lotus Chips were crispy and disappeared quickly. The Miso Soup was comforting, with a depth of flavor that I enjoyed. The Yu Yu Roll was a standout for me, well prepared and bursting with fresh delicious seafood. The Eggplant and Tofu dishes looked great and the flavours were beautifully balanced. My son devoured his sushi and chicken and the piece of chicken I stole was crunchy and flavoursome. Izakaya Yu is definitely more expensive than the Middle Pub in Mullumbimby but was worth the reminiscing for the family, and I enjoyed an Asahi and a Ginger Sake cocktail to ensure I was maximising my exposure to the authentic taste of Japan. Despite being over full, we tried the Ice Cream and can definitely recommend making the room if you like Hazelnut, Green Tea or Black Sesame ice cream (you get to choose two). They have a small bar section which was always good for a walk ins. I arrive early and there’s 2 tables with 2 people. I get told there is a 30-45 mins wait. There’s literally no one there. They state they are expecting large crowds who have booked - that’s great but your establishment is empty! In the time it took to wait for a table I could have ordered, eaten and left. I ended up going down the road, ate at a place which is always supper busy, was sat and served promptly and came back and the place was still largely empty. Ridiculously inconvenient and really should up their customer service experience, especially for the prices they charge. There are loads of other friendly, happy places to go to in Mullum. Not this one. The good staff leave and the objectionable rude ones seem to stay.

The facts are that my coffee order was pushed aside and not made, I waited 45 minutes and when I questioned why my order wasn’t being made I was met with aggressiveness from your staff and “do it yourself” and had to then beg for my my coffee cups and money back. I stayed absolutely calm however I was taken aback at the aggression and abuse I received when I asked what was going on. As already mentioned, there were several other people who also were complaining, and I did see another woman get very upset at how your staff handled the situation taking no responsibility and also being completely aggressive and abusive towards us. Your response shows that you are ok with your staff treating paying customers like this and you should be ashamed. Customers spend your money elsewhere this business is abusive and doesn’t look after their customers. Absolutely unacceptable and inappropriate behaviour from a business. Worst experience at a cafe ever. I’m so angry! I ordered 2 takeaway coffees at 7.56. One docket up infront of mine. Waited …. Waited.. 45 mins later and still no coffee. The lady infront of me and behind me wondering where their coffees are. Noticing people sitting down getting their coffees who ordered 20 mins after us. So we asked where are our coffees what’s going on? We got a “we have our own process so you can wait” I said it’s been over half an hour and are coffees are half made to the side. We were not advised of a 40 minute coffee wait. Another staff member walked up and said “you clock on and do it then” and I said I happily would, it would take me 2 mins to do the 3 remaining takeaway coffees. Then they continued to make other coffees ordered so much after us and ours just continued to sit unmade. I’m so angry. I waited 45 minutes for nothing, and when I politely and very fairly asked why are my coffees not being made I was met with “do it yourself” no gracious apology or trying to make it right. These staff members are incapable of doing their jobs and they have no ability of basic customer service. The barista seemed confused and not confident to make the coffees and the dark haired girl was extremely rude and a horrible piece of work, I would never employ these girls and they need serious training in how to manage 3 coffees and address a customer follow up after a 45 minute wait when it wasn’t even busy! Worst service ever. When there’s a very valid issue occurring and the staff are unable to respond with the capability of resolving the matter, but rather swear and aggressively start an argument with a line of confused paying customers, you have a serious problem. Having staff that lack skills and training is one thing, but to blatantly be aggressive to customers and lack ability to address the issue professionally with the customer, choosing to dig your heels in and blame the innocent customers, there is a serious lack of grace and accountability from management too. I ordered a smoothie and a juice. They called out my juice order and I went to pick it up, and there was a smoothie beside it. I just assumed it was both my drinks.
