Carol Anne, owner, went above & beyond to assist me in rescheduling when a member of our travel group became ill. The entire staff is friendly and professional, and the tour itself was wonderful. It was such a treat to get my first glimpse of an iceberg, and see the gorgeous shoreline and attractions of St.John’s such as Cape Spear and Cabot Lodge, Jelly Bean Row, etc. from the ocean. This is definitely a tour worth taking and gives you the additional bonus of 2 enjoyable hours of interesting down time from the hustle & bustle of travel & sightseeing. Back in January when we were planning what to do, we decided to spend a few days in and around St. John's. We covered all the must sees - Signal Hill, Cape Spear, George St, and so on, but we wanted to include something special for the afternoon of the actual day. It occurred to us that we don't see that many whales in the river that flows through our small town just outside of Ottawa, so we decided to book with Gatheralls. So glad that we did! While we enjoyed everything that we saw and did in St. John's, both of us feel that this was the absolute highlight! We loved the experience. Just being out on the ocean was a cool experience. The puffins and other birds were incredible. The crew were fabulous! The singing, the jokes and laughter, the information about the puffins and other birds was fascinating - who knew that a little puffin could dive up to 200 feet into the ocean in search of food - and the screech in ceremony was hilarious. Apparently there was a two-metre swell that day and I truly came to understand what the term 'sea legs' really means. We passengers were all over the place, hanging on to seats and railings while the crew was standing and walking around like we were on dry land. Impressive! Alas no whales. So zero stars for the whales, but five truly deserved stars for everyone at Gatheralls. If we're ever in St. John's again we'll go back to give the whales a chance to redeem themselves.

I was surprised at how small it was however as I was expecting a large mansion from the pictures online. The guide was stumped a few times at our questions and wasn't able to answer. Also a bit disappointing to find out that very little is original in the house and all the furnishings, dishes, paint, and floors are recreations. The tour only takes about 20 mins with a small group. I'm not sure what kind of show they used to put on in the past but we didn't experience any tastings, performances, wine vault, or activities of any sort as described in past reviews. Also too bad the rooms are cordoned off with rope for further expooration.

North Head Trail is the hardest trail out of all the trails surrounding Signal Hill. The majority of the trail has guard railing but a small section needs you to hold a chain to traverse the narrow rocks. That being said, that section is fairly small and isn't a point of concern. If you are afraid of heights, you might want to mentally prepare before heading out as some areas are quite steep. In my opinion, this is the best trail out of all the trails in the Signal Hill area and you should try it at least once if you are visiting St. Johns. The views are breathtaking, but windy.
