Luneburg

Lüneburg is a town in northern Germany. In the medieval old town, red Brick Gothic–style buildings frame Am Sande square. Housed in the former Lüneburg Saltworks, the German Salt Museum details the history and importance of salt mining, the source of the city’s medieval wealth. Many buildings in the historic quarter lean due to centuries of mining. Lüneburg Kalkberg, a limestone hill, sits in a nearby nature reserve.

Historical landmark
Am Sande is a picturesque market square located in the historic old town of Luneburg, Germany. The square is surrounded by charming gabled buildings that house various shops and eateries, adding to its medieval charm. St John's Church with its leaning spire overlooks the cobblestone plaza, creating a stunning backdrop. In the Middle Ages, Am Sande was covered in sand rather than cobbles, making it easier for merchants to navigate their carts to the market.
As a person who lives in Lüneburg I can only recommend it to people who want to visit!! It's town is truly beautiful and amazes me every time!! The best time to visit is either spring or autumn because the city starts to glow in it's true glory.

For the most part the town is a lovely getaway for couples. The architecture and the tiny walk ways within the town is great. It is family friendly and one can explore within a day. It's so much prettier in the Summer. I would highly recommend this place for a day activity. Aber schnell...the town awaits 💮🌼

This is a beautiful square surrounded by amazing architectural structures. The outside roof tops are all different and wonderful. Definitely a must visit when in Luneburg.

I visited Am Sande in Lüneburg over the weekend, and it was a wonderful experience! This stunning historical place is perfect for a quiet, relaxing day. The area offers a big open space for walking with family and enjoying the picturesque view of the beautiful buildings. There are also many nice cafes where you can sit and enjoy the sun. Lüneburg is a very nice city with incredibly kind people. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a serene and charming getaway!

One of the most beautiful towns near Hamburg in the north of germany. The streets with restaurants and its unique architecture. Definitely worth a visit . How to reach: take RE3 from Hamburg to Luneburg. takes about 30 minutes to reach.

Great historical square with many old beautiful houses and tall brick gothic church. Located in the old town center. The square is always crowded. Not far from the square there is an old water tower with observation deck where you can enjoy amazing views of the city center.

Am Sande is the sole center of this former salt mining city, which made it a prosperous medieval town. Rich entrepreneurs and merchants built beautiful gabled houses here, some of them leaned today because of salt excavation

Museum
Cultural landmark
The German Salt Museum, also known as the Luneburg Salt Museum or Salzmuseum, is a captivating venue that showcases the 1,000-year history of salt mining in Luneburg. Situated on the former saline site, this museum delves into the city's rich past as a prominent salt producer and its significance within the Hanseatic League.
Surprisingly, I had a wonderful time touring the Salt Museum. They offer an audio tour in English for 1€, alternatively you can borrow a binder of translations of the exhibit for free. The space is much larger (and deeper) than expected and gives you a thorough history of Lüneburg and its role in the middle ages. Loved the maps and models of the original town layout and interactive models of the saltworks. As a solo traveling 30 yr old, I highly recommend it if you like history and salt :)
I H — Google review
The lady at the reception was very nice! The museum had niceee different kinds of salt The water source was also random but interesting! The little shop was LITTLE! The museum wasn’t in English you had to book a tour guide for that. The museum also included many languages such as Kurdish! Which as a Kurdish person I very adore
The H — Google review
Fantastically interesting museum in one of the former salt factories. A complicated story told well but with old museological technology which does not always function. The shop has a great variety of salty products. The question who owns the salt-mines remains open even after the visit.
Andrea P — Google review
Very interesting visit in Lüneburg — learned a lot about the town’s historic salt production and how it shaped the city’s prosperity. The exhibits show the tough and harsh working conditions of the salt workers — impressive and humbling to see how hard life once was.
Markus M — Google review
The experience overall was pretty nice. The history was pretty interesting, and I personally loved the fact that there are little fountains that let people taste the water like it was back in the day. The stuff was very friendly, but we got a little confused with the directions. We asked multiple times where the start was, and we never got a clear answer. Long story short, we started from the end, and we finished at the start. The ticket costs 8€ and I think it was 4€ plus if you want to have the little device that explains everything during the experience. It was pretty good for 1 time but not a must, in my opinion.
Dodis T — Google review
Interesting look into the Lüneburg history through salt. Features salts from all over the world, the old machinery, fun salt facts, media, a big puzzle for the kids and more. All the info plaques are only in German, though.

Very interesting. Enjoyed it. Must visit.
Haidab H — Google review
Fascinating museum all about salt to visit, especially with older kids. The exhibits were interesting, we enjoyed the original washroom from the salt mine that stood there. Easy to walk to from the centre of Lüneburg.

St. Michaelis Church, dating back to the 14th-15th century, holds historical significance as it was where Johann Sebastian Bach attended school and sang in the church choir. The church's acoustic qualities are praised, making it a popular venue for events like Christmas services. Visitors can explore both the interior and exterior of this centuries-old church while enjoying its medieval surroundings. The church offers a serene escape from the bustling city and is considered one of the most beautiful places to view Hamburg from above.

St. John's Church, located in the historic center of Luneburg, Germany, is a magnificent Brick Gothic church with a rich history dating back to 927. The church is known for its 14th-century tilted steeple and the legend surrounding it. With its 108-meter bell tower dominating the skyline, St. John's features striking Gothic-style architecture and is home to the world's highest brick vaulted ceiling.
In the midst of a long vacation with many busy streets and sidewalks, it was refreshing for the soul to find some solitude in a church.

Lovely church. So much history in that church. Managed to witness an organ playing recently. Was moving.
Haidab H — Google review
This beautiful church is the oldest in the city of Lüneburg, located in the city center, and is considered a significant example of Northern German Brick Gothic architecture. Make sure to go inside and admire everything at your leisure...!🤩

Most of the times i have visited Lüneburg it was closed. I managed to enter during the Christmas holidays for one of the celebrations. This church has some great artefacts that are definitely worse to see

This is a definite visit if you are in the area. Opportunity to relax and reflect in an old old historical building. They supply a good range of language guides -a donation can be given too.I normally hold Churches as cold however this building really ‘talked’to me -to calm down. I believe ‘this life’ is Heaven, we are all experts so we think! but we are all very lucky that we are a part of a Planet just the correct distance from a burning Planet that allows the very essence of life -atmosphere/water/temperature -someone might have had a hand in this ??!!

Stintmarkt, located in the picturesque old town district on the Ilmenau in Luneburg, was historically a bustling fish market during the Middle Ages. The area is adorned with replicas of two old boats from the Hanseatic era and an old wooden crane that serves as a reminder of its maritime past. Today, it has transformed into a lively street filled with a charming mix of shops, cafes, and restaurants.
A great historical place with old beautiful houses and great views of the old Ilmenau river harbor. Located just opposite the Fischmarkt and the old crane. You can enjoy nice views here. On the river you can see many geese and ducks. Also there are a few restaurants with open-air terraces where you can enjoy tasty meal - especially I recommend Das Kleine.

(Translated by Google) It's a very atmospheric part of Lüneburg's old town. In the past, fishermen used to sell small fish here, but now there are cafes and restaurants, and just a leisurely walk along the river is very relaxing. The cobblestone streets and old buildings remain in good condition, making it a fun spot to take photos. There are tourists, but there aren't that many, and you can get a feel for the daily life of the locals, so it's not too touristy, which is a good thing! It's perfect for lunch or a coffee break, so be sure to stop by!

Nestled in a quaint half-timbered house, Ristorante Buona Sera Lüneburg offers a delightful escape into the heart of Italian cuisine. This family-run gem invites you to savor an array of Mediterranean dishes, from delectable antipasti to succulent veal and monkfish fillets. Pizza enthusiasts and vegetarians alike will find plenty to love on the menu.
Had the seasonal mussels and it was cooked fantastically, and the white wine sauce we got with it was divine
Jan W — Google review
Pizza was very average (barely a soup spoon of sugo for the whole pizza, so i had no idea how it tasted). Small selection of non-alcoholic beverages and i think information about the grams (of pasta) should be included in the menu.

Great experience! The food was amazing, the service is done with care, the bathroom are super clean. Perfect restaurant for such a cute city.

Really nice pasta. The place is a bit boring, but the food is definitely worth it 👌 The best was (nr 36) Orechetta with ham, tomato, and creme sauce. The carbonara was alright.
LUNA L — Google review
The food was ok, for the price it could be much better. The internet was not working there and the service was good. So, overall the place a bit less than average.

Pizza restaurant
La Taverna is a charming Italian restaurant housed in a historic building with a riverside terrace. It offers classic Italian dishes and a variety of Italian wines. What sets La Taverna apart is its embrace of vegan cuisine, seamlessly blending traditional hospitality with modern vegan culture. The outdoor seating area provides stunning views of the historical harbor crane, making it an ideal spot to savor both classic and vegan Italian dishes.
Food was good and the location it's lovely, and they had a lot of space outside with beautiful views. But giving 5 stars because of the service. They were amazing. We got a table outside and it started getting a bit cold, and they were checking on us, they gave me a blanket without me asking, they asked us if we wanted to go inside to finish the meal. We had an issue with the order we got something we didn't order and we felt bad (we were the last customers left) but we ended up saying it wasn't the right thing and they were really apologetic. They were really attentive and ensuring we were ok all the time. Great experience!
Nuria Y — Google review
The place is nice .. we ate 3 different kinds of pastas. And a Brusceta. Nothing exciting. When we asked for the check, they explained that they accepted only cash. Not nice at all. We normally avoid places like that. It is ok but nothing more.
Ofer A — Google review
First the good things: there are plenty of gluten free and vegan options, basically every dish can be turned vegan. The gluten free pizza dough is even self made! I also thought that the place looked really nice and everything was really clean:). Now the downside: I found my Pizza to be not really lush when it comes to taste, pretty bland and the vegan deli meat for the pizza hawaii are just thick cut pieces of vegan sausage... The server wasn't very friendly either.
Sookie — Google review
What a wonderful experience it was! I just went there alone, was on a business trip. I asked Sicilian pasta, which was not in the menu. But they made it for me. That was one of the best pasta I have ever eaten at restaurants. I loved the pasta, coffee (just couldn’t eat any more…the portion was huuuuuge.) Lovely people cook lovely food. Just remind you that they only accept cash.
Keičko M — Google review
Cute place and lots of outdoor seating. Lunch was not that amazing, and the worse thing was that I have little pieces of broken plate (most likely) in my dish. The waiter couldn't do anything but offer us coffee. That was nice but I don't think you should pay for a food you can't finish because of this type of a reason. I did not ask a new plate as my food was not tasty.
Tiina L — Google review
Too good too good too good.. I have had pizzas and pastas all my life but I can bet there pizzas are different and best!! Our Kellner was really nice and served us well.. :) lovely place!!!

Charming Ristorante with delicious Italian food, Original Lüneburger beer, fine selection of Italian wine and excellent, attentive service. Comfortable seating. We loved it and will certainly recommend La Taverna and come back again! Thank you for the lovely dinner in this beautiful old house. I also noticed that there are some high chairs available and in the upstairs lady's room there is a changing table, so you obviously welcome families with young children. That's a nice extra.

Came here multiple times and tried a variety of food. Overall good, but the baked dishes and the pastas are the best. Huge salads and very thin pizzas. The tomato soup is very good, while the broth with tortellini is not the best. The staff is very kind and helpful.

Vietnamese restaurant
Quan An Ngon Lüneburg is a Vietnamese restaurant that offers a variety of healthy, vegetarian, and vegan dishes in a relaxed atmosphere. It provides a wide selection of beverages and foods to cater to different tastes. Despite the limited availability of Asian restaurants in Luneburg, this new addition has been well-received for its fresh and delicious cuisine. Customers have praised the generous portion sizes and flavorful dishes such as crispy duck in mango sauce and Barbarie duck.
What an awesome find and it’s not exp! We had delicious dishes and the service is so fast and friendly! The fellow leaving for Thailand for holiday was so lovely! The me for the chat, amazing service and great food! Everything was absolutely delicious! We had the beef and rice Seafood soup and spring rolls!

Nice restaurant. High quality food. Very tasty and the portions are big. The service is also good. Attentive and friendly staff :)

The ingredients were fresh and the food had a natural taste. However a little bit pricey for the portion and service you get. The place is very clean and overall a good choice if you like Asian food.
Daniil V — Google review
Came here twice during my 3-day visit in Lüneburg. Had I discovered this gem sooner I would’ve had come here more often. The Pho Bo is one of the best in Germany, and the taro rice dumpling (dessert) is a surprising delight.
SB W — Google review
Restaurant is very crowded, too many seats, too narrow, almost no distance. Chairs are very uncomfortable, just pure wood, small and not very tall. Food is average, could have been more spicy. Prices are moderate and not too expensive in my opinion, but we got the impression, the meat is very rare at least in the dishes, we have chosen. Would probably try something else next time here in Lüneburg.
Guido K — Google review
Good selection of dishes but it could definitely be spicier. No comparison to real Vietnamese dishes but probably toned down for the local scene. Try the mango lassi, really good.
Cornelia K — Google review
Delicious food and drinks! We ordered a crispy duck in mango sauce which was a great balance of flavors and a generous portion size, and the Barbarie duck dish with an equally generous portion that was our favorite. We also ordered a mango fridge cocktail, which i reccomend for anyone who likes sweet drinks. I made a reservation in broken German and the server was very kind and helpful!

I cannot rate the food because I couldn't try it. We made a reservation for dinner at 5 pm, and at 6 pm, they hadn't even taken our orders. Two hours later, we were still waiting for the food, so we decided to leave. We didn't get any apologies on their part. Clearly, a place not to return to.

Trattoria De Flaviis is a charming Italian restaurant located in Luneburg's Old Town. The restaurant offers both indoor seating and outdoor dining when the weather is nice. It is housed in a 400-year-old building that was faithfully reconstructed after a fire in 2017. The ambiance is delightful, especially when sitting outside with a wonderful view of the water. The interior is stylish and modern while still exuding an Italian flair.
Cozy and tasty place. Great italian food. But the mushrooms on funghi pizza they didn’t use dried ones like in Italy correct me if I am wrong. But still it was nice
Ümit Ö — Google review
The location is very nice. Food is okay and they offer most of their dishes in in kids-size, which is really nice. The wine list is solid with Italian wines offering what seems to be good value for money. . I would probably have given them 4 stars, but our visit was heavily clouded by other guests smoking cigars, some kind of mini-cigars and pipe. I would have expected a good restaurant to have prevented that. For that reason we never made it to desserts and they get 3 instead of 4 stars.

Was here spontaneously on a Wednesday night and had a great time. The place is nice, the food was really good. The staff was a little bit “absent “ for my taste but still accommodating and professional. The wine menu was solid.
