Lüneburg Town Hall , considered by researchers to be the largest in the region, is an example of secular architecture from the Middle Ages and early modern period in northern Germany . It was built around 1230 and has been expanded and rebuilt several times over the centuries, while remaining the primary seat of Lüneburg's city council and administration.
Lüneburg, Am Sande, one of the most central places. One of my favorite pictures. I’m sure you will love there.. Lüneburg Town Hall is an example of medieval and early modern secular architecture in northern Germany. it is the largest medieval town hall in northern Germany.
The Lüneburg Town Hall is an example of medieval and early modern architecture in northern Germany and is also the largest medieval town hall in this region. It's fortunate that the Lüneburg Town Hall didn't have to suffer any war damage! It's truly beautiful to behold! 🤩
Worth place for Visiting & soothing your mind.
Lüneburg's town hall is a storyteller, administrative seat, landmark and gem all in one. With its 259 rooms, it is one of the most outstanding architectural monuments in northern Germany and the largest medieval town hall in the north. The construction of our town hall began around 1230 and was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded over the centuries. Thanks to its 700-year building history, traces from various epochs have been left throughout the town hall: Gothic and Renaissance court arbor, prince's hall, old archive, chancellery and mayor's chamber. Masterful woodwork adorns the large council chamber, which is one of the largest Renaissance halls in Germany. The Hall of Homage and the market facade date from the Baroque period. In the tower there is a clockwork with chimes made of Meissen porcelain. The town hall is still actively used as the seat of the administration of the city of Lüneburg. However, the most beautiful rooms are open for you to visit as part of a guided tour.
PROS: superb old town | pedestrians friendly | families will have fun here CONS: some street musicians would be great
If you come Lüneburg, then make sure to take the guided tour of the City Hall. The city hall is supposed to be one of the most beautiful city halls in Germany, which was as the city itself was luckily was not destroyed during the war. If you come on a Saturday, you cN combine the visit of the market right outside the city hall, with a guided tour. We had the most entertaining German lady, who could tell way more than what she was able to tell us in this one hour tour. If you think my review was useful, kindly press the like button. Thx
Very nice building, unfortunately was partly hidden because of reconstruction works on the square in front of it.

This is a medieval port ramp used for (un)loading salt and other products from boats. It's set in the very center, but more we liked the relaxed vibe of the area. There're several bars and restaurants around with outdoor seating, and people sit on the bridge with their drinks enjoying the beautiful scenery around
It is a picturesque social hotspot with beautiful scenery and sunshine well into the early evening in spring.
The Old Crane is a historic harbor crane located at Lüneburg's ancient Ilmenau port. The crane, which was built in 1797 and was one of the most powerful in northern Germany at the time, still characterizes the image of the Wasserviertel today and is regarded as a landmark. Lüneburg was first mentioned in medieval records in a deed signed on 13 August, 956 AD The crane is constructed of a load-bearing wood framework. Great atmosphere, stunning environment, and nice restaurants to eat or just have a beer are all must-sees if you're in Lueneburg. Today (June 24, 2023), we went on a weekend trip. Lunenburg) is a charming and historic town on the Ilmenau River, bordered by the Lüneburg Heath in the North German state of Lower Saxony. The town is located about 50 kilometers southeast of Hamburg and is the capital of the district of Lüneburg, with a population of approximately 75,000 (2018). So very beautiful, do visit. And lot of Restaurant are also there.
Definitely worth to visit ❤️ the vibe in warm days when town citizens eat and drink in restaurants nearby is wonderful ❤️
A short trip to Lüneburg is the natural consequence after visiting Lübeck. The salt that made Lübeck rich actually came from Lüneburg! At the former harbor in the water district (Wasserviertel), you'll find this "Old Crane," a (secret) symbol of Lüneburg. This is where the precious salt ("white gold") was shipped, bringing great wealth to the city during the time of the Hanseatic League. In the Middle Ages, the crane was an important tool for lifting heavy loads, especially salt bags, onto ships or onto land—thus allowing the salt to be transported further to Lübeck through the Stecknitz Canal. Two old ships can still be seen there. And there are plenty of lovely Cafés around the square - a true tourist magnet! 🤩
This old crane is on the water providing a beautiful scene over the water.
The restaurant has amazing location near by the river, and it is a big one. As you can see from the pictures they have nice view and atmosphere. The staff was very warm, friendly and quick service. They serve Lavazza coffee and the cakes were fantastic, and also normal prices. Strongly recommend and if I have the chance I would definitely visit it again!
Very beautiful, especially with the Christmas markets and the lights. This is a beautiful city, well worth a visit.

Surprisingly, I had a wonderful time touring the Salt Museum. They offer an audio tour in English for 1€, alternatively you can borrow a binder of translations of the exhibit for free. The space is much larger (and deeper) than expected and gives you a thorough history of Lüneburg and its role in the middle ages. Loved the maps and models of the original town layout and interactive models of the saltworks. As a solo traveling 30 yr old, I highly recommend it if you like history and salt :)
The lady at the reception was very nice! The museum had niceee different kinds of salt The water source was also random but interesting! The little shop was LITTLE! The museum wasn’t in English you had to book a tour guide for that. The museum also included many languages such as Kurdish! Which as a Kurdish person I very adore
Fantastically interesting museum in one of the former salt factories. A complicated story told well but with old museological technology which does not always function. The shop has a great variety of salty products. The question who owns the salt-mines remains open even after the visit.
Very interesting visit in Lüneburg — learned a lot about the town’s historic salt production and how it shaped the city’s prosperity. The exhibits show the tough and harsh working conditions of the salt workers — impressive and humbling to see how hard life once was.
The experience overall was pretty nice. The history was pretty interesting, and I personally loved the fact that there are little fountains that let people taste the water like it was back in the day. The stuff was very friendly, but we got a little confused with the directions. We asked multiple times where the start was, and we never got a clear answer. Long story short, we started from the end, and we finished at the start. The ticket costs 8€ and I think it was 4€ plus if you want to have the little device that explains everything during the experience. It was pretty good for 1 time but not a must, in my opinion.
Interesting look into the Lüneburg history through salt. Features salts from all over the world, the old machinery, fun salt facts, media, a big puzzle for the kids and more. All the info plaques are only in German, though.
Very interesting. Enjoyed it. Must visit.
Fascinating museum all about salt to visit, especially with older kids. The exhibits were interesting, we enjoyed the original washroom from the salt mine that stood there. Easy to walk to from the centre of Lüneburg.

In the midst of a long vacation with many busy streets and sidewalks, it was refreshing for the soul to find some solitude in a church.
Lovely church. So much history in that church. Managed to witness an organ playing recently. Was moving.
This beautiful church is the oldest in the city of Lüneburg, located in the city center, and is considered a significant example of Northern German Brick Gothic architecture. Make sure to go inside and admire everything at your leisure...!🤩
Most of the times i have visited Lüneburg it was closed. I managed to enter during the Christmas holidays for one of the celebrations. This church has some great artefacts that are definitely worse to see
This is a definite visit if you are in the area. Opportunity to relax and reflect in an old old historical building. They supply a good range of language guides -a donation can be given too.I normally hold Churches as cold however this building really ‘talked’to me -to calm down. I believe ‘this life’ is Heaven, we are all experts so we think! but we are all very lucky that we are a part of a Planet just the correct distance from a burning Planet that allows the very essence of life -atmosphere/water/temperature -someone might have had a hand in this ??!!
Nice church with a tower of a very interesting shape, located on Am Sande. Church tower can be seen from the nearby water tower observation deck.
Beautiful church just from outside! Worthy to visit it and the town itself!

This place is worth exploring inside and outside and offers many discoveries. While you are here, enjoy the medieval surroundings. The church itself is open and invites to be visited, offers a quiet surrounding away from the hustle and bustle. This church and the town generally are absolutely worth to visit.
An incredibly beautiful church.

Amazing place with very interesting history! It's really worth visiting the abbey inside, if you can't make it for the time of the tours - private tour is recommended - our guide Charlotte was great and told us a lot about the place
Well, worth a visit. Pleasant walk from the city centre Free entry. Just be aware that tours, to see inside the Abbey, are strictly only at 10 am and 3pm. However, you can walk around the grounds anytime
One of the best things Lüneburg has to offer! The Abbey is idyllic, very beautiful to walk around. It is worth to visit the interiors, there is a beautiful organ and church. The museum is also worth visiting, it was a pleasant surprise (recommended to go the 1st Saturday of the month) . It is all very well kept and the personnel is very sweet and nice to speak to, they'll answer any question.
Really cute place to stop by on a morning or afternoon walk.
Beautiful abbey with peaceful surroundings and rich history. Sadly missed the Sunday guided tour at 3 pm — will return for it! Lovely weaver’s shop with unique handmade textiles, well worth a visit.
Very beautiful old buildings and surroundings. Unfortunately the church was closed, so we didn't get a chance to see that. The weavers located at the Abbey was an interesting visit.
This convent is about a 15-20 minute walk from the center of town, depending how fast you walk. When you get to a road called Bockelmannstrabe, cross over to a bike path that will take you directly to the convent. The walk along the path is beautiful with all the trees. There's a cafe and gardens. Very peaceful. This is only open seasonally.
This is a pretty lovely old convent, got tours, a little cafe, a vegetable garden, sell some fabrics made on the old looms they have on exhibition.

Beautiful park. Peaceful. Well maintained.
Good place to walk around. Plenty of space to do some activities. Usually many people there, but you will always find your spot.
PROS: well preserved | well located | perfect for kids & picnic CONS: some extra benches would be great
Nice place. Lot of place for Picnic or other activities. Playground for children is too small in my opinion, there's more place for organise really nice place for kids, I hope that in nearly future town will rebuild this.
It's a beautiful park. It's the go-to place on Sunday for families with children. The children can splash around in the small fountain which is surrounded by seating. Ther's a small cafe with outdoor and indoor seating. Great selection of cakes, coffee and ice cream! The atmosphere is very relaxed. There's also a fairly big playground for the children with a seating area. There's also a small made made lake filled with ducks who you are not allowed to feed!! Great place to jog and go for a run or walk. Public toilet also available. The park is very well maintained.
Kurpark is a place to go to regardless of weather. It's a nice park to take walks in, get some exercises in, play games, just hang out or also listen to concerts. It has a designated area for dogs to have free play.
Very nice and spacious park including the Gradierwerk where you can treat yourselves to a free saltwater inhalation. Great for kids to run around, very nice playground included.
As with all German parks it is a simple place with fields for relaxing or reading a book. There is a playground here and some strange water fountain structure.

Another attraction on the way to the old town/in the old town which is from a static perspective quite an interesting building. If you find yourself around the old town/city hall you could definitely take a look at this building.
This house is known as the "pregnant" house as the outside wall bellows out like a pregnant stomach. Very interesting and unique for sure. Let me know if you can see the bulge on the wall.
A very cute and random wall, i loved it
It's more of how to get there than the destination itself. A curious little tid bit.

I was here with my mother who visited from another country and with my daughter. They were both impressed. Some reviews here are saying that the museum is small. The size of it is actually really good- you get to see and learn a lot but it doesn’t get boring, especially for kids who don’t have a lot of patience. The also have special exhibits which are also very good.
Interesting collection showing the intricate history of the town, now they’re also showing and keep adding some pieces from the colonial era and it’s great to see that it’s being researched and reflected on. The space in general is very nice and pleasant to spend time in.
A very interesting place to visit while in Lüneburg. The current exhibit on the end of WWII was well done and informative.
New museum that is totally not worth going. It's small and there's nothing interesting in exhibition. One particular staff was also very nosy, following us throughout the museum and keeping an eye on us as if we're going steal any of the worthless artifact here.
Great place! Receptionists and all the staff are amazing too!
Boring, they cared more about the design of the furniture and the architecture of the building instead of the actual content to show. Nothing amusing or exciting inside. Pretty disappointing.

Directly at the town hall is the tourist information. Friendly staff are available for information. In addition to a lot of information you will also get small souvenirs here. Here you can also book beautiful city tours (also via the Internet).
Kind staff, nice souvenirs. Located in the left corner of the city townhall/town square.
Ok, but I think it's could be better. We were told by a tour operator that we could get particular coins her, but they were out of stock. Staff could have been a little more helpful.
The luggage lockers at the train station are broken. There was no sign so I lost my €. The guy at train Ingo had no suggestions. I walked 15 min with my luggage to tourist info and asked where I can lock my luggage and the tourist I go told me at Karstadt. I went to Katstadt and Luggage lockers don’t open until 11am since you have to put a deposit at the restaurant inside. I told Tourist info this and they said We didn’t know. I reminded her that it is her job to know or to call and find out. I know and it’s not my job. I will not recommend anyone to come to Lüneburg. They are UNwelcoming and unhelpful to tourists. My German friend asked me WHY I was coming to visit Lüneburg. It’s not a good visit and I just arrived. That’s a great museum, a deep dive into a history of Eastern Prussia. The museum is quite interactive and has some very good historical pieces. I really enjoyed it!
A regional history museum which ultimately has a unique connection to the local area. Its origins as a hunting museum give it a unique touch; there are now displays about nature and the hunting tradition which tie in well with the more conventional historical topics. There are plenty of interactive displays. The displays are in German but they have audio guides in a few other languages.
A very interesting museum about the story of the Prussians, unfortunately everything is in German language only and the audio tour is very limited with the information provided.
Incredible museum, you can tell a lot of care and devotion went into presenting this important and often forgotten cultural region. Highly recommend it
A wonderfully specialist-themed museum which not only talks about the people of East Prussia but also the history, the fauna, and archaeological finds. Special mention must be made of the two ladies on Reception, they were so helpful in answering questions, the key one being why is there such a strong connection between East Prussia and Lüneburg.
Good museum. Amber impressed.
Fabulous As a keen museum goer this one stands out as one the better “small” Museums. Detailed exhibits and an excellent audio guide in English as well. Top class. Telling a history that would otherwise have been lost to time.
