The German Salt Museum, also known as the Luneburg Salt Museum or Salzmuseum, is a captivating venue that showcases the 1,000-year history of salt mining in Luneburg. Situated on the former saline site, this museum delves into the city's rich past as a prominent salt producer and its significance within the Hanseatic League.
Surprisingly, I had a wonderful time touring the Salt Museum. They offer an audio tour in English for 1€, alternatively you can borrow a binder of translations of the exhibit for free. The space is much larger (and deeper) than expected and gives you a thorough history of Lüneburg and its role in the middle ages. Loved the maps and models of the original town layout and interactive models of the saltworks. As a solo traveling 30 yr old, I highly recommend it if you like history and salt :)

The lady at the reception was very nice! The museum had niceee different kinds of salt The water source was also random but interesting! The little shop was LITTLE! The museum wasn’t in English you had to book a tour guide for that. The museum also included many languages such as Kurdish! Which as a Kurdish person I very adore
The H — Google review
Fantastically interesting museum in one of the former salt factories. A complicated story told well but with old museological technology which does not always function. The shop has a great variety of salty products. The question who owns the salt-mines remains open even after the visit.
Andrea P — Google review
Very interesting visit in Lüneburg — learned a lot about the town’s historic salt production and how it shaped the city’s prosperity. The exhibits show the tough and harsh working conditions of the salt workers — impressive and humbling to see how hard life once was.
Markus M — Google review
The experience overall was pretty nice. The history was pretty interesting, and I personally loved the fact that there are little fountains that let people taste the water like it was back in the day. The stuff was very friendly, but we got a little confused with the directions. We asked multiple times where the start was, and we never got a clear answer. Long story short, we started from the end, and we finished at the start. The ticket costs 8€ and I think it was 4€ plus if you want to have the little device that explains everything during the experience. It was pretty good for 1 time but not a must, in my opinion.
Dodis T — Google review
Interesting look into the Lüneburg history through salt. Features salts from all over the world, the old machinery, fun salt facts, media, a big puzzle for the kids and more. All the info plaques are only in German, though.
Freyja — Google review
Informative and interactive museum at the previous salt manufacturing factory, explaining history of the Lüneburg as City of Salt Mines until the salt manufacturing ended in 1980. It costs 1€ extra to get an audio guide, it comes in English too.

St. John's Church, located in the historic center of Luneburg, Germany, is a magnificent Brick Gothic church with a rich history dating back to 927. The church is known for its 14th-century tilted steeple and the legend surrounding it. With its 108-meter bell tower dominating the skyline, St. John's features striking Gothic-style architecture and is home to the world's highest brick vaulted ceiling.
In the midst of a long vacation with many busy streets and sidewalks, it was refreshing for the soul to find some solitude in a church.

This beautiful church is the oldest in the city of Lüneburg, located in the city center, and is considered a significant example of Northern German Brick Gothic architecture. Make sure to go inside and admire everything at your leisure...!🤩

This is a definite visit if you are in the area. Opportunity to relax and reflect in an old old historical building. They supply a good range of language guides -a donation can be given too.I normally hold Churches as cold however this building really ‘talked’to me -to calm down. I believe ‘this life’ is Heaven, we are all experts so we think! but we are all very lucky that we are a part of a Planet just the correct distance from a burning Planet that allows the very essence of life -atmosphere/water/temperature -someone might have had a hand in this ??!!

Am Sande is a picturesque market square located in the historic old town of Luneburg, Germany. The square is surrounded by charming gabled buildings that house various shops and eateries, adding to its medieval charm. St John's Church with its leaning spire overlooks the cobblestone plaza, creating a stunning backdrop. In the Middle Ages, Am Sande was covered in sand rather than cobbles, making it easier for merchants to navigate their carts to the market.
As a person who lives in Lüneburg I can only recommend it to people who want to visit!! It's town is truly beautiful and amazes me every time!! The best time to visit is either spring or autumn because the city starts to glow in it's true glory.

The observation deck of the Lüneburg water tower offers a fascinating glimpse into history with its impressive 14th-century architecture. The view from the top is truly magnificent and well worth a visit. The staff are friendly and helpful, even if there is a language barrier. While most exhibits are in German, this should not discourage non-German speakers as the fourth floor speaks for itself and translation apps can easily assist in understanding the content.
Best place to visit in Lüneburg! The view from the observation deck is amazing. The tower is very well maintained. There are both stairs and elevator. Aside from the views, there's a museum inside and the mechanisms from the old water system. Absolutely worth visiting.

Very nicely refurbished water tower located in the city center. It's actually a museum (and used for events), not just a viewpoint. Some of the floors have exhibits on water usage. Dogs welcome! 5 eur per person. Great views of the city and surrounding area. Highly recommend. Little gift shop at the entrance.

A very cool piece of history, with an even greater view at the top. Being able to see the beautiful 1300s architecture around Lüneburg is worth the €5. The staff were super nice, and despite the language barrier was able to help direct us. The content of the exhibits are mostly in German, but don’t let that deter you if you don’t speak it. The 4th floor speaks for itself, and if you really are interested in the words they’re very clear and easy to translate with an app. I did not expect to start my trip falling in love with a water tower, but it is worth making an effort to see if you’re around Lüneburg (30 minute train from Hamburg 100% worth the trip)

Lüne Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded in 1172, is located just outside the city center of Luneburg. Stintmarkt, located in the picturesque old town district on the Ilmenau in Luneburg, was historically a bustling fish market during the Middle Ages. The area is adorned with replicas of two old boats from the Hanseatic era and an old wooden crane that serves as a reminder of its maritime past. Today, it has transformed into a lively street filled with a charming mix of shops, cafes, and restaurants.
A great historical place with old beautiful houses and great views of the old Ilmenau river harbor. Located just opposite the Fischmarkt and the old crane. You can enjoy nice views here. On the river you can see many geese and ducks. Also there are a few restaurants with open-air terraces where you can enjoy tasty meal - especially I recommend Das Kleine.

The cobblestone streets and old buildings remain in good condition, making it a fun spot to take photos. There are tourists, but there aren't that many, and you can get a feel for the daily life of the locals, so it's not too touristy, which is a good thing! Lüneburg Town Hall is a historic building with medieval origins and a stunning baroque-era facade. Construction of the town hall began in 1230, incorporating architectural elements from various periods. The original Gothic facade was replaced after a storm in 1703, resulting in the spectacular front seen today. Guided tours offer visitors the chance to explore the lavish interior, featuring murals, frescoes, and intricate wood carvings.
Lüneburg Town Hall , considered by researchers to be the largest in the region, is an example of secular architecture from the Middle Ages and early modern period in northern Germany . It was built around 1230 and has been expanded and rebuilt several times over the centuries, while remaining the primary seat of Lüneburg's city council and administration.

Lüneburg's town hall is a storyteller, administrative seat, landmark and gem all in one. With its 259 rooms, it is one of the most outstanding architectural monuments in northern Germany and the largest medieval town hall in the north. The construction of our town hall began around 1230 and was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded over the centuries. Thanks to its 700-year building history, traces from various epochs have been left throughout the town hall: Gothic and Renaissance court arbor, prince's hall, old archive, chancellery and mayor's chamber. Masterful woodwork adorns the large council chamber, which is one of the largest Renaissance halls in Germany. The Hall of Homage and the market facade date from the Baroque period. In the tower there is a clockwork with chimes made of Meissen porcelain. The town hall is still actively used as the seat of the administration of the city of Lüneburg. However, the most beautiful rooms are open for you to visit as part of a guided tour.

I was here with my mother who visited from another country and with my daughter. They were both impressed. Some reviews here are saying that the museum is small. The Old Crane in the Lüneburg harbor is a centuries-old industrial landmark that dates back to 1346. This historic harbor crane was used to lift valuable goods such as salt and firewood. It features two hidden wooden carrying wheels and is still fully functional, despite becoming redundant after Lüneburg was connected to the railway network in 1846.
This is a medieval port ramp used for (un)loading salt and other products from boats. It's set in the very center, but more we liked the relaxed vibe of the area. There're several bars and restaurants around with outdoor seating, and people sit on the bridge with their drinks enjoying the beautiful scenery around

The Old Crane is a historic harbor crane located at Lüneburg's ancient Ilmenau port. The crane, which was built in 1797 and was one of the most powerful in northern Germany at the time, still characterizes the image of the Wasserviertel today and is regarded as a landmark. Lüneburg was first mentioned in medieval records in a deed signed on 13 August, 956 AD The crane is constructed of a load-bearing wood framework. Great atmosphere, stunning environment, and nice restaurants to eat or just have a beer are all must-sees if you're in Lueneburg. Today (June 24, 2023), we went on a weekend trip. Lunenburg) is a charming and historic town on the Ilmenau River, bordered by the Lüneburg Heath in the North German state of Lower Saxony. The town is located about 50 kilometers southeast of Hamburg and is the capital of the district of Lüneburg, with a population of approximately 75,000 (2018). So very beautiful, do visit. And lot of Restaurant are also there.

A short trip to Lüneburg is the natural consequence after visiting Lübeck. The salt that made Lübeck rich actually came from Lüneburg! At the former harbor in the water district (Wasserviertel), you'll find this "Old Crane," a (secret) symbol of Lüneburg. This is where the precious salt ("white gold") was shipped, bringing great wealth to the city during the time of the Hanseatic League. In the Middle Ages, the crane was an important tool for lifting heavy loads, especially salt bags, onto ships or onto land—thus allowing the salt to be transported further to Lübeck through the Stecknitz Canal. Two old ships can still be seen there. And there are plenty of lovely Cafés around the square - a true tourist magnet! 🤩

A regional history museum which ultimately has a unique connection to the local area. Its origins as a hunting museum give it a unique touch; there are now displays about nature and the hunting tradition which tie in well with the more conventional historical topics. There are plenty of interactive displays. The displays are in German but they have audio guides in a few other languages.

A wonderfully specialist-themed museum which not only talks about the people of East Prussia but also the history, the fauna, and archaeological finds. This brick building from the Middle Ages stands next to the town hall and is known for its bulging appearance, which gave it its name. The house's unique shape was caused by badly fired plaster that expanded when it absorbed water over time. Some believe that touching the wall of this house can bring luck to couples hoping for a baby.

(Translated by Google) A church that seems inconspicuous at first and may not be immediately recognizable from the outside... But inside it is really well designed. The local community is more important than the church itself. The community is characterized by a really great and committed church community that lives, proclaims and revives the faith again and again. The sermons are really great as always. There are also many offers for young, middle-aged and old such as: Scouts, Bible groups, confirmation or baptism preparation, pastoral care, worship and much more... Outsiders will certainly immediately feel in good hands. People who want to research, explore and discover the faith or are new to the faith and now have questions are well advised with this community and leadership (also Winsen, Hittfeld, Neuhaus, Bleckede, Dahlenburg, Seevetal)! Here you are taken seriously, welcomed and guided in your faith, challenged and supported and not left alone. A very clear recommendation!

Guided tours through the historical town hall provide insights into its motivated preservation efforts. (Translated by Google) The Nikolaihof Bardowick is a historical attraction in the Lüneburg district in Lower Saxony. There are several residential and commercial buildings here (14th to 18th centuries), all of which are distributed around a Gothic chapel, the origins of which lie in the 14th century and which were renovated in 1435 (this is a four-bay hall church with a polygonal choir). The complex (a small list) includes the organist's house/pastorate (from 1591/1672), the women's house (from 1721/22), the chapel (from 1310/1435), the provisional house (from 1559), the old men's house (from 1316/1421) and the new men's house (from 1802). The library of the joint community is now located in these buildings Bardowick and also get the keys to the chapel here for a tour. Here in the Nikolaihof you feel like you have been transported back to that time. Also worth mentioning is the complex's old trees, which are simply very impressive. In addition, things around Gradierweg looked pretty neglected: garbage and alcohol bottles dominated the picture. Unfortunately no recommendation. The DORMERO Hotel Altes Kaufhaus Lüneburg is an elegant establishment with well-appointed rooms that provide complimentary internet access. Additionally, guests can enjoy the convenience of a sauna and riverside dining options. The hotel boasts a beautiful setting and offers clean and exceptionally comfortable accommodations. The late check-in clerk was particularly charming and amiable. It should be noted, however, that individuals with allergies may experience discomfort due to the presence of cats in the lobby.
We really loved our stay here. The check-in and check-out were smooth. Our room was spacious and had everything we needed. The free mini-bar was a nice surprise :) I had a work call during our stay, and the wifi worked wonderully throughout the meeting. Would have loved to stay longer than just one night!

I originally posted a review describing serious issues during my stay. That review was removed, but I am now able to review the location after proving I indeed stayed here. The hotel was understaffed — we were locked out of our room for hours with no one at reception or reachable by phone in the middle of the day, because are room keys became defective. Hygiene was extremely poor, including what appeared to be hairballs and trash in the lobby and mold in the shower.

Dormero Hotel Bargenturm Lüneburg - Everything was good, but the mattress was truly unbearable. This wasn't just an issue in my room; my colleagues had the exact same problem. A comfortable bed is essential for a good stay, and the quality of the mattresses significantly detracted from an otherwise pleasant experience.

Nestled along the riverside, this remarkable hotel exudes charm and meticulous attention to room maintenance. However, check-in procedures tend to be prolonged, often surpassing 50 minutes, and breakfast service beginning at 7:00 a.m. may pose an inconvenience for early-rising guests.

Beautiful hotel in the very centre of Lüneburg. I was in town to provide a lecture at Leuphana University. The hotel is situated right in the middle of town, not far from the train station. The rooms are quite spacious and comfortable, and even have a dining table. There is a steam sauna and a gym available to the guests free of charge. The gym's exercise machines do need some maintanence, though. The receptionist, Monika, was wonderful and very professional. Quite a great experience, overall!

Beautiful hotel. Clean and really comfortable rooms. The clerk that checked us in late was absolutely lovely and so friendly. What we didn't know though, was that there are cats there. I'm extremely allergic so I had had a reaction directly when I entered the lobby, into a cloud of cat hair. That's a bit weird but probably lovely for cat lovers. Other than that it's an absolute gem of a hotel.

Great great great!!!! I reserved a block of hotel rooms for my wedding guests here and can't say enough great things about this place. Fantastic value accommodation, breakfast buffet was amazing (not usually included in room rate), beautiful view - right on the canal! And a fun environment.. Pool table, fooseball table in lobby.. Quirky jokes throughout hotel.. And there were 2 white cats hanging out in the lobby on some days!!!! What a unique hotel feature! Also, the front desk were very kind and accommodating, especially with their great English skills for my non German speaking guests. Thanks!!
