Tomioka Silk Mill, also known as Tomioka Seishijo, is a historic silk spinning mill established in 1872. It was Japan's first modern silk factory and played a crucial role in the country's efforts to modernize during the Meiji Period. The mill was built with the assistance of French specialists to enhance the quality of silk production through advanced machinery and improved working conditions for its employees. The site features well-preserved buildings from its early years, including warehouses and residences.
Underrated World Culture Heritage location. You'll be surprised on how little known to the International tourists. Maybe not everyone is interested in silk mills or textile history. Good job in preserving such an important era of human history.

The most visited place of Gunma prefecture. The most attractive tourist spot of Tomioka City. It's a world heritage place that demonstrates the ancient Silk production and processing system of Japan. Moreover it's a model Silk factory that foster machines and modern system of silk factory across the country...

Attraction: Nice place to visit on your way to your destination. Many buildings are closed, so you can only see them from the outside. There are two rather large buildings that you can walk through one has a second story with a few exhibits you can read about. There's not that much walking since the museum is quite small. Fees: We paid $1,000 yen per person, but there are discounted rates for children. Food: There are several places for small snacks and light meals outside of the museum. We didn't try any of them and so can't recommend. Parking: There's no parking specific to the museum but there are small parking lots spread around town at the entry. Going rate is $500 yen for a full day.

Visited last year.. There is free Tomioka Silk Mill app that can be downloaded for the audio tour in various language. It’s an interesting historical place to learn how raw silk was made in the early days.

One of the world Heritage Sites of Japan. Full of its historical remains. Access is really inconvenient, however if you have a car its easy. The walking inside the Silk mill feels like you are living at 18th century. It really feels that you time travel and went back to 18th.

We dropped by Tomioka silk mill after camping just for a fun. It was amazing experience to see the process of making silk and historical house constructed before the war. Especially we are interested in the lifestyle of staff and trainers. We could see the furniture and documents. Highly recommend.

A must see. Everything is in Japanese though which shocked me for a UNESCO site but it was fine with Google translate, I got the idea. Would go again on a day that wasn't insanely hot.

Mount Myōgi, a significant volcanic mountain in Gunma, is renowned for its unique rock formations and numerous hiking routes. Formerly part of the Jomo area, it is one of the three famous mountains known as the Jomo Sanzan. The challenging trekking paths offer steep rocks and narrow trails with chains to hold onto. It's not recommended for novice hikers due to its difficulty level. The summit offers magnificent views, making it a popular destination for adventure-seeking hikers.
Mount Myogi is very beautiful mountain. With very steep terrain. There are many hiking roots. I only went up to the first mountain and view point because it was very hot.

If you are looking for a high level mountain trekking challenge, this is the place were Japanese come. From the large parking area, you can take sevel high demanding trekking paths. Some will challenge you through very steep rocks and narrow path crossing, hanging from chains. Take your time and not despair. This is not a place to bring your entry-level hiking friend. The views at the top are magnificent.

2023.05.20 Hike : - A very challenging mountain to hike. Suitable for people who loves adventures. Just make sure to bring helmet and gloves with very good grip.. Expect long chains and steep hike. Always check the weather before you hike. Not advisable to hike on rainy days because of the leeches. Base on my experience, conquer Dai-no-Jo summit first if youre a beginner with no guide.

Met no human during our climb but two deers. Some areas were not accessible. Decided to do the hike up till the 大 word. And back down. Overall good climb, prepared gloves as we needed to use the chain for some parts

Tomioka Silk Mill's East Cocoon Warehouse is a remarkable structure with a 100-meter frontage. Built in 1872, it combines Eastern and Western techniques, using a timber-frame brick structure with traditional Japanese tile roofing. The building served as storage for cocoons awaiting processing and now houses exhibits on the mill's history and silk manufacturing methods. It stands as a testament to the mill's innovative approach, having adopted overseas brick-making methods at a time when Japan did not produce bricks.
(Translated by Google) It is a representative building of the Tomioka Silk Mill and was designated as a national treasure in 2014. The Higashi-Oki-cocoon-dokoro is built using a ``timber-frame brick structure'' in which bricks are piled up on a wooden frame, which I think is quite unusual. Above the entrance to the central part of the east cocoon place, bricks are piled up in an arch shape, and in the center there is a keystone called a keystone. ``Meiji 5'', the year the Tomioka Silk Mill began operations, is engraved here. (Translated by Google) It is a world heritage site. Before the war (or rather, during the Meiji and Taisho eras), there were no fully automatic machines like we have today, so girls from the samurai clan went to work and manually pulled thin raw silk from silkworm cocoons. Combine several strands to make a single thread. This is sericulture. This raw silk is surprisingly strong and cannot be cut with just a little force. These techniques were passed down by French engineers, and the buildings also use French techniques. It's that famous brick building, and technology is also used in the way the bricks are laid. by the way, At that time, there happened to be an exhibition that recreated world heritage sites using Lego, so I went to see it. European technology was incorporated, including the use of French steam engines and string handlers. Tomioka Silk Mill is a very large factory where over 300 female workers can work at once. It is said that the female workers who came from all over Japan learned the techniques of mechanical silk reeling, returned to their hometowns, and passed on the techniques. When the latest thread handling equipment was invented, Tomioka Silk Mill quickly adopted it and it became a model for other silk mills. The silk-manipulating and cocoon-laying places are national treasures and were built using a combination of Japanese and European techniques. Yahei Tajima's former residence and Takayamasha were built to create a large number of cocoons by devising new techniques for raising silkworms and storing eggs, which are the raw materials, and establishing a school to spread the knowledge. Chicken restaurant
On the way back from Saku's van dwelling, I visited a shop that had piqued my interest. The restaurant had limited seating, causing an unexpected delay in getting lunch. Despite the small space, the menu offered a surprising variety of dishes including Unaju (grilled eel over rice), Katsudon (deep-fried pork cutlet over rice), and Tori Katsudon (deep-fried chicken cutlet over rice).
Really delicious chicken! Torihei is a chain that specializes in chicken and to my knowledge, is only in the Gunma prefecture. I’ve come here for both takeout bentos and for dining in for lunch, and this is some of my favorite chicken I’ve had. The meat is incredibly tender, not dry at all, and the sauce is just perfect. I was really surprised at the quality of chicken coming from this relatively inexpensive restaurant chain. Their chicken karaage is also so delicious, juicy with a light crispy fry on the outside. Glad I came across this place and would recommend it for sure.

(Translated by Google) I only had the image of Noboripaira as a bento box, but I knew that some stores had eat-in options. I came across Tomioka's Noboridaira when I visited Tomioka for mountain climbing, so I was able to stop by. Even though it wasn't even 11:30, the place was already packed with customers. I was able to enter the store without having to wait. Is it that popular? Apparently there were a lot of people ordering take-out lunch boxes, so the parking lot might be full easily. On the way back, there were cars waiting for a parking spot. Perhaps it was because there were so many customers coming in and out of the store, but the cold wind coming in from the entrance made it feel cold. If the heating was working properly, I would have liked the salad udon set. I ordered fried chicken salad instead, and the fried chicken was really delicious. When I think of Norihei, I think of the chicken rice, but I felt nostalgic. It's soft and the sweet sauce is delicious. You can also choose sauce cutlet. I also wanted a salad, so I ordered the fried chicken salad. I think I had also had a fried chicken salad before, but I thought the set was quite filling because of the large pieces of kakiage that came with the warm udon and soba noodles. I was grateful that they frequently refilled the tea during the meal. The customer service was polite and very good. My only regret is that there seems to be only one cash register, so there was a line of take-out customers, so I had a hard time paying my bill. I want to leave early since I finished my meal, but I can't because of the traffic. There were cars waiting outside, so I felt like the store's opening times would be better if we just separated the registers for takeout and eat-in. Sorry for the unnecessary inconvenience 💦 You can also use a credit card for payment. There seemed to be several levels of take-out bento boxes depending on price and content, and yakitori also seemed to be available for purchase individually. It looked delicious and had a lot of variety. Next time, I would like to try the salad udon that my friend recommended. I had looked at the menu, but the portions were a lot larger than I expected. I got a large portion of rice for 150 yen, and the bowl was deeper than I expected, so the portion was quite large. Yakitori and fried chicken looked delicious, but I bought the "Chicken Meshi Bento (Matsu)" for 900 yen. When you open the lid, two types of chicken are spread tightly on top of the rice. The thigh meat is juicy with a strong flavor, and the breast meat has a refreshing taste, and the combination of sweet and spicy sauce, rice, and chicken is irresistible. The pickled vegetables and crunchy plums on the edge of the rice are also a nice way to rest your chopsticks. I had takeout this time, but I'm sure it would be quite delicious if it was warm. It's a much more filling lunch box than I expected, so it's very satisfying♪ (Original)

Udon noodle restaurant
If you're on the hunt for authentic local cuisine, Minosukejaya is a must-visit spot. Nestled in a charming area, this restaurant specializes in "Okirikomi," a unique type of udon that comes either hot or cold. On my visit during an unusually warm day, I was pleasantly surprised by the cool ambiance inside. I opted for the meat-inclusive version of Okirikomi and paired it with a refreshing cola.
The okirikomi is a really delicious regional food. It's filling and inexpensive plus service was quick.

The hot cut udon is delicious, but less for the price. Cold udon sticks to paper and hard to eat. Because it is a sightseeing spot, feeling stuffing customers in a narrow store. Customer service is not good. Not comfortable. I do not recommend here to come at all.

Great udon, but if you go there you should know that you can choose between only two kinds of types of udon!

(Translated by Google) We ate the local cuisine "Okirikomi". On a day when the temperature was close to 40℃, mist appeared at the entrance. I was reluctant to eat hot udon noodles, but the store was well-cooled. Order ``Okirikomi'' ➕ ``Meat included'' for 1,580 yen. Also, cola. Although it was lunchtime, the food was served very quickly. The pot is simmering. I thought it was a little expensive, but is it appropriate? It's full of vegetables, and the way it's cut makes it stand out. It's more like eating vegetables than eating udon. The only thing that bothered me was that the flavor was too strong. Personally, I like strong flavors, but since the vegetables and noodles were soaked in, it was quite salty. Utama is suddenly salty. After leaving the store, I guzzled a liter of tea. The menu isn't that extensive, but the choices are a very flat type of udon called ``Okirikomi'', either cold or hot. I ordered a cold one, but I was told that the udon noodles were so wide and chewy that they couldn't even be compared to kishimen. It was more filling than it looked and it was very delicious. If you have a chance to come here again, I would like you to stop by. On the way from Tomioka Silk Mill to the station, there was Okkiri Komi Udon restaurant, a Gunma local gourmet dish. Entered the store at the same time as it opened at 11:30. Served in just 10 minutes. It was a cold day so I was happy that it was piping hot. But will I be able to catch the 12:13 train? The ingredients are also cut into large pieces so the heat doesn't escape. It's miso-based and has meat in it, and it has a pork-like taste, but it's delicious. A heart-warming taste. The udon noodles are so thick that they are hard to grasp and a little difficult to eat, but I love them. I ate it all in a hurry, burning my mouth, and managed to catch the train on time. Considering the cost of the ingredients, 1,600 yen with meat seems quite expensive, but it's a tourist destination price. I think the rating is a little lower because of the price.
