Nestled just outside the bustling city center, Tottori Sand Dunes is a breathtaking coastal expanse that stretches for 2 kilometers and boasts towering sand formations reaching heights of up to 45 meters. This stunning natural wonder, shaped over a staggering 100,000 years by sediment from the nearby Sendaigawa River and ocean currents, has become Tottori's most cherished tourist destination.
The Tottori Sand Dunes are truly breathtaking — a unique landscape you wouldn’t expect to find in Japan. Walking across the vast dunes feels like stepping into another world. The view of the ocean from the top is stunning, and it’s a fun experience whether you’re there for a relaxing stroll, photography, or a bit of adventure.

A desert which stretches along sea coast gives a serene wilderness. It’s a pure bucket list destination. Recommendations: there is no vending machine at the spot so better to bring water with you. Toilet: no Parking: plenty of paid parking. But there is free parking spaces in front of サンコスモスshop.

The sand dunes were absolutely incredible! It was definitely a workout — walking through the sand was so tiring, but honestly so worth it once you reach the top. The views were amazing and unlike anything I’ve seen before. Such a unique experience — I’d 100% recommend it, just make sure to bring water and good shoes!
Nicole C — Google review
This was my first time treading through a sand dune and IT WAS THE BEST TIME OF MY LIFE! On terms of parking, the price is reasonable and there are a lot of spaces. For the sand dune itself, although it was really windy (As the sand dune was facing the Sea of Japan), the view was very mesmerizing! However, my shoes and socks were covered in sand. So, I recommend you wear sandals / slippers to any kind of sand dunes! Therefore, you’ll have more fun! I highly recommend to go here if you ever have the chance to go to Tottori!
Wong W — Google review
The sand dunes are a really nice attraction, it is so beautiful but be ready to empty you shoes from all the sand afterwards! Go inside the information center to get your stamp if you are collecting them. The parking is 500 yen for 24 hours, but it is only valid as long as you don't exit.
Rosalie P — Google review
Worth visiting and people will not believed you that you are in Japan. The sand dunes is huge and you need to reserve lots of energy to walk both ways to the beach. You can take lots of pictures with the spectacular views…. A place with unique experience in Japan. ❤️
J C — Google review
Go for a tourist stop horseback dune. But, if you cross to the other side (West), where there is more vegetation covered dunes, you will discover plenty of floral and fauna. Not many people on that side.
Ilka D — Google review
AMAZING, if you are in the surroundings areas, this is a must do! I went there in this July 2025 so a little hot but then, you can just jump in the sea. I had a very good time.

Art museum
Museums
The Sand Museum, located near the Tottori Sand Dunes in Japan, is a unique indoor space that showcases changing exhibits of stunning sand sculptures created by artists from around the world. The museum's concept revolves around 'world travel in sand,' featuring intricate and ephemeral works of art that transport visitors to different parts of the globe. Since 2012, it has been housed in its own permanent residence, making it the only indoor sand museum globally.
The museum has a great concept that every year a selected country of the world is introduced with sand sculptures. The theme of this year is Japan. A dozen topics are arranged in a chronological order to describe how the Japanese history and culture is evolved. My favorite topic is the art of Japan, ukiyoe, for it’s both educational and aesthetically pleasing.
Dave — Google review
This world’s first indoor sand museum doesn’t do your average beach sandcastles. Think massive faces, amazing life-sized human figures, towering structures, even detailed entire cities. All sculpted from JUST SAND and WATER. Unreal. 🏰🇯🇵 #SandMuseum #Tottori
JJJay A — Google review
An amazing exhibition! The craftsmanship and detail in each sculpture are incredible. I really appreciated how much information was provided about each piece, which made the experience even more interesting. In my opinion, the entry price is very fair - I would have happily paid more for something of this quality. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Tottori!
Lauren O — Google review
I really enjoyed this. I'm a history teacher and the history shown here was amazing. The talent of the sculptures was really awe inspiring. I highly recommend coming to visit here. When I went, it was japanese history. It changes every year.

Insanely pretty! Must visit spot if going to the sand dunes! Relaxing after a long hike as well. Staffs are super helpful too and there’s toilets!!! When we went to the staff to get a locker, they offered us to keep our luggage’s with them! They were super dupe friendly. There’s also a bus nearby, I think 4 lines total so it’s pretty flexible if you want to get to Tottori station or surrounding towns. Would recommend a lot.
Kim B — Google review
Absolutely amazing experience! The museum was so well put together — every exhibit was fascinating and beautifully displayed. I learned so much and genuinely enjoyed every minute of it. The staff were friendly, and everything was super organized. I would highly recommend visiting if you get the chance — definitely one of the highlights of my trip!

I grew up in Tottori, but this was my first time visiting here. It was amazing! This is one of the best places that tourists should visit in Japan. Tottori is the smallest prefecture in Japan, but I’m proud that it has such an amazing sand museum.
Shu — Google review
By far the most impressive exhibition I have seen for a long time. Blown away by the skills of and detail with which the artists were able to create these sculptures, using nothing but water and sand.

Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Hakuto Shrine, located in Tottori, may not be the most grandiose shrine, but it holds great significance due to its connection to two of the region's well-known folklores. The shrine is linked to the national folk story 'The Hare of Inaba,' and it is believed that many visit this shrine seeking blessings for healing burns or skin ailments.
A shrine dedicated to the hare of Inaba. The typical buildings of a Japanese shrine would be the torii gate, the cleansing place, main hall, gift shop, a place to hang the small wooden plaques bearing prayers or wishes, donors' names..... One particular unique feature is the Mitarashi Pond, where the water level remains level, never swelling nor declining throughout the year.
GAN Y — Google review
Lovely shrine with a lot of rabbit statues which has a huge burden to carry stones of wishes and hopes.
Nonthicha R — Google review
Very cute shrine with a unique flavor. It’s said to be closely related to the myth of the marriage between Okuninushi and Yagami-hime, so it’s a shrine famous for seeking marriage. And it,s close to the coast and the beach and has an excellent view.
Evans H — Google review
It’s a nice spot right next to the ocean. My friend really wanted to go. So we stopped by and she got a really cute charm. It is a shrine for lovers to see if it will last. People put stones on rabbits stamped with a kanji. I don’t remember exactly which kanji but it is something about a lasting relationship. Definitely worth a quick visit
Grace M — Google review
A very cute temple with lots of rabbits, i wouldn't say not worth it but with the beach in the front quite pleasant to spend half of the day to walk along the beach after temple visit. in between temple and the beach is rest area where you can have some refreshment or meal and of course buy some local produce and souvenirs or have a cup of coffee!

Hakuto (White Rabbit) Jinja is a Shinto #Shrine in #Tottori. It is the setting of the myth of the White Rabbit of Inabane. It is one of the nicest #Shrine l have ever seen. It is believed that the Shrine's power is to relief from burns and other skin conditions. The shrine is located in a very peaceful pond in the forest with Mitarashi pond where ducks were swimming peacefully.

Bodies of Water
Tottori Prefecture offers more than just its famous sea and sand landscapes. The Uradome Coast, located within the Sanin Kaigan National Park, boasts a rugged coastline shaped by millions of years of erosion. This has resulted in stunning rocky islands and formations surrounded by white sandy beaches and pine trees, often likened to the iconic Matsushima view. Stretching over 9 miles along the water's edge, this coastal outlet is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
About 45 minute walk from kamagaiso observation deck. No pedestrian walkway but fairly flat slope. Very nice scenery, no tourists here so off the beaten path
David T — Google review
The sea is beautifully clear with excellent visibility. There wasn’t as much current as I had expected, so I was able to swim with peace of mind. There’s also plenty of parking, and the easy access is another big plus.
Emma S — Google review
The vast, endless coastline is breathtakingly beautiful, and has been designated as a place of scenic beauty and a natural monument by Japan. Due to its similarity to the Matsushima landscape in Miyazaki Prefecture, it is known as the hidden gem of San'in Matsushima in Tottori Prefecture! Its famous feature is its transparency, which reaches a depth of 25 metres! It has also been rated as one of the most spectacular views in Japan!

Really quiet and beautiful place. Great for a morning stroll at the beach or run. The water is a bit cold in March, but you can walk or swim the the shrine and explore the small rock paths around the beach. Very worth it for a relaxing time away from the crowds.

Sanbutsu-ji Temple is a national icon located on the vertical face of Mount Mitoku. It offers a unique experience as it is literally built into a cave's mouth. Visitors can explore the area around Misawa town, including the charming Shirakabe area with its traditional Japanese townscape from the Edo period. The temple also serves as a starting point for hiking trails, with Nageiredo Temple being the culmination of the Mitoku trail.
A challenging but short hike leads to this beautiful temple. Make sure to wear proper hiking shoes or else you will have to purchase their traditional slippers (with good grip) for 900 yen. And entry fee is 800 yen + 400 yen for the temple complex. Was a fun adventure!

Very cool shrine set in the mountains, come prepared for climbing, also the stairs are step and worn from the ages
Only I — Google review
Sorely disappointed as the hiking trail is closed until 1 April as the main highlight has to be up close and personal with the upper shrine. However because it's low season, we had a serene visit to the lower shrine.
Rtexal T — Google review
I loved the mountain climbing but do keep in mind, it’s not an easy claim and going down is even more technical and difficult. The views were beautiful though. I loved it. The whole place and the temple gives a spiritual vibe. This climbing to the top was the highlight of my trip. I enjoyed it very much.

Japanese regional restaurant
Takumi Kappo is a gem that offers fantastic food and amazing service. The staff, despite being busy, provides attentive and friendly service. The menu is in Japanese, but the servers are fluent in English and offer guidance through pictures. The thinly sliced Tottori beef cooked in a mild stock is a must-try, melting in the mouth with generous portions for everyone. The sweet local pear dessert perfectly complements the meal.
Must go in Tottori! Delicious food, healthy and fresh options. Staff are super friendly and welcoming, it was so good we had to go two days consecutively. First day opted for beef wagyu curry which was plentiful and filling with the sashimi on side. Second day beef butter with vegetables, again opted for sashimi as it was delicious. They also have tatami areas which are very cozy and traditional.
Christian G — Google review
The food is amazing. We ordered the short loin set and a stir-fried wagyu cooked in butter. The waitresses brought everything out to share between us. They spoke some English, and explained how to season and cook each dish. Highly recommend
Amber B — Google review
I was a little surprised to see so many open seats when I arrived for dinner, but better that than no seats available. Opted for their tottori wagyu beef set, which they promptly worked on. The menu has English, so there is no issue ordering as a foreigner. The beef was quite tender and I was surprised to see it came with wasabi, as I had only eaten that with sushi before, but it did add a little kick to the beef. Dessert was some fruit, but I was surprised how sweet the persimmon was. Very friendly and attentive staff (maybe even a little too attentive), but great place to try out local dishes!
Brandon S — Google review
My friend and I ordered a set meal and a hot pot. While the dishes looked simple, every bite was full of flavor. The beef had beautiful marbling and richness, though I prefer thicker, chewier cuts, so it wasn’t my favorite—but my friend loved it. What stood out for me was the soy sauce fish in the set meal; the sauce was perfectly balanced, and now I’m curious to learn how to make it. Since we visited during China’s National Day holiday, the place was packed, and service seemed a bit stretched. I hope they find a way to manage the high demand and don’t miss out on this great crowd. In general, they have a great service and environment.

I’ve been to Tottori two times (2018 and 2025), and this is my favorite restaurant here. The shabu shabu is delicious, the staff is kind and friendly. I look forward to returning here one day.
David A — Google review
The food was fantastic and the service was amazing! Highly recommend it here and I'll explain why. The server may be on her own, but she was able to serve us attentively. The menu was in pure Japanese but she knows English and showed us pictures as a guide. When serving our appetizers, she was explaining the dishes to us. She also offered to explain how hotpot works, but we were already familiar with it. Initially, there was no space for us, but the owner was able to accommodate us despite that. The food itself was very fresh and delicious. The appetizers that came with our set meals have a surprisingly pleasant quality. Normally I don't eat some of them, but the ones served here tasted different in a good way. The hotpot sauce is also unique that it adds to the flavor of the already-delicious wagyu. The wagyu hotpot tastes really good for its price btw!

We found this little cosy restaurant by chance when we were in Tottori. They served very good Tottori wagyu shabu shabu…
Eric L — Google review
Hands down the BEST shabu shabu and, dare I say, wagyu beef we have tasted! The thinly sliced Tottori beef cooked in a mild stock melts in the mouth and there was a big portion for everyone too. All the meaty goodness was washed down happily with the sweet local pear dessert. Staff was super nice, even ran out of the restaurant to help us find a parking spot. Service was immaculate! Price very reasonable for the quality. Had a wonderful time, thank you very much!

Coffee shop
Cafe
Sunaba Coffee is a renowned coffee shop located in Tottori, offering a unique experience for visitors. The area provides opportunities for fat bike riding on sandy terrains, mountain roads, and the beach, allowing guests to immerse themselves in nature. The establishment gained attention by giving away free mugs and offering refunds to customers who preferred Starbucks coffee. Despite its slightly higher prices, patrons appreciate the strong handcrafted coffee served on-site.
Sunaba coffee is famous with their coffee. I can’t drink coffee so I didn’t try it but pretty sure it’s worth give it a try.

Nice coffee shop. Food was good and service was good. I was expecting more from the pictures on atmosphere, but ok. I did like the large ice cafe latte. Coffee was good. Bathroom is just outside main door and was large and clean. Men women bathroom shared.

Really not worth your time. Went for a morning toast set as shown on the menu and....rolls came out instead of toast. Luke warm rolls. The salad was meh at best, clearly not fresh. The boiled egg was prepared poorly and didn't peal properly as a result. Coffee was passable but nothing special. Staff was fine, but ambiance of the place is horrible. it feels like a k-mart Starbucks, which is already not exactly a classy joint with soul. You'd be better off with a calorie mate from Family Mart for breakfast than this place which is clearly just a tourist trap. One extra star for the slice of orange that was the best part of the meal.
Eric K — Google review
Went there about an hour and 40 minute after they opened and they already had a lot breakfast food sold out. Worse, other food options were not available because they did not serve it during breakfast. This is supposed to be a popular restaurant in the area but it seems more about food presentation than actual food availability. The restaurant aesthetics are ok, but it was at an uncomfortable temperature and humidity. Disappointing experience, to say the least. Do not recommend for breakfast hours

Crab Sandwich was okay only because it wasn't hot enough. But the fillings inside is really good. The Iced Chocolate was good though.

Although we often see a queue during weekends for brunch, we went in during mid-day and there was no queue. However, the menu is very limited and the coffee is average. A better bakery or cafe option would be the bakery at the Tottori train station, or the Nana's green tea.
Michelle Y — Google review
(+) Location is near station (+) Taste is delicious (+) Staff could talk English
Ahmad S — Google review
I got a really good cup of coffee here. The price is a little high (¥430, I think, for a small cup of black coffee) but it was very strong and they hand made it on the spot. I didn’t eat-in, but the atmosphere is nice and very close to the station. Of course, the excellent name is another main reason to come here! Formerly, Tottori was the only prefecture in Japan that had no Starbucks. Some entrepreneurial soul created “Sunaba” coffee instead, which sounds both like “Sand place” as well as the Japanese pronunciation of Starbucks coffee! So funny 😆 The coffee here is massively superior to Starbucks and it’s a shame Starbucks has finally infiltrated Tottori.

Natural Farm Coco Garden, located in Tottori, is renowned for its all-natural poultry farming methods and free-range chickens. Situated at the base of the Yazu mountains, it's a 40-minute train and bus ride from Tottori Station. The restaurant on the second floor offers a variety of dishes, but their specialty lies in their fluffy pancakes with a souffle-like texture and rich flavor.
Came here 30 mins before opening and was 5th in line. Anyway, my wife and i were just keen to eat the fluffy pancakes which were highly rated... And we were not disappointed... Super fluffy pancakes served with an organic maple syrup. Highly recommend.

Located at the second floor of the main building. Here for lunch. We ordered the hamburger steak and omelette rice and their famous pancakes for dessert. The entree was so so but the salad bar with varieties of egg dishes did give us a chance to get some veggies. The pancakes are the real charm here and it's a must order dish. It tastes like a souffle and the flavor is so rich with a light egg sweet smell. One of the best souffle or pancake we had so far. The entire dining area is roomy with high ceilings and let you completely relax and enjoy lunch and take a break. The first floor offers many desserts and souvenirs for take out. Definitely recommend to stop by and try their pancakes here.
Jim H — Google review
Beautiful restaurant in the mountains surrounded by nature. The concept is of using all local produce, including free-range eggs from the restaurant's own farm. We arrived when it opened at 10:00 a.m. on a Tuesday (not a holiday) but waited just over an hour for our order to be served. The restaurant was full, but they only had two people making the pancakes. After 30 minutes, we had to ask for our water to be filled up. The restaurant clearly needs more staff. It is unacceptable to have to wait an hour for an order of pancakes. That upset our schedule for the rest of the day. The pancakes were delicious, as usual.
Sean B — Google review
Perfect pancake serves here, coffee is good too. The problems are too far away from everywhere, and took way too long to get my pancake, to dine here you have to wait for 40mins to get a table first then wait for another hour for the pancake. However, its worth the wait once the pancake gets into your mouth and melt in there, it tells you it's worth it!!!!
T N — Google review
The best pancakes I've ever had! (As an American, I'd like to think that's a pretty darn good compliment.) They cook them a little bit on the underdone side to give the pancakes a souffle-like texture, so if you want a more traditional pancake texture, make sure to ask for しっかり焼き(shikkari yaki).
Joy S — Google review

Ninong J — Google review
(Translated by Google) Kanikichi is the best crab dish in Japan. Kanikichi is Japan's best crab dish. General Tatsuya Yamada's crab dishes are said to be the best in Japan. Awarded 2 stars in the Michelin Guide. It is still fresh in my memory that it was featured on “Jonetsu Tairiku” broadcast on December 13, 2020. The location is Tottori City. It goes without saying that it is difficult to access, but if you come from Kanazawa you will need to transfer trains and it will take over five and a half hours, so be prepared for the journey to take some time. However, I was shocked by the overwhelming taste. Once I found out about this deliciousness, I felt happy, but at the same time, I felt that it would be difficult in the future because this would become my benchmark (I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this). In a sense, it is similar to the forbidden fruit of Adam and Eve's tree of knowledge. Why can a simple ingredient like crab make such a difference in taste? What is the secret technique that makes everyone who tastes it say, ``This is something special?'' This is probably the result of the efforts of General Yamada, who is not only a connoisseur, but also a person who has continued to explore each ingredient. The most distinctive feature is that it does not have the characteristic smell of crab. It's strange that I didn't smell the crab smell at all, and even my hands that touched the crab remained odorless. I have a habit of wiping my hands with towels over and over again, but there is no odor at all. Extremely pure. It was my first time seeing a crab like this. ●Crab sashimi The flowers are not forced to bloom, but are slightly swollen with just water, and 3 drops of soy sauce are sprinkled on them with a dropper. It has a clear taste with no cloudiness, and when you close your eyes, the sweetness seems to ripple in your mouth. This is just the beginning, but the first part is enough to get you hooked. ●Grilled crab Pasteurize to avoid burning, so that the aroma of the charcoal does not interfere with the delicate flavor. We decipher the best moments with great care. Then, “take it off” without relaxing yourself. The chef takes out the meat and puts it right into the crab leg shell. The soup is at its best, with no soup dripping out. I feel like I'm still alive. ●Boiled crab There are no words to describe the meat, which is so stuffed and ready to burst. The corners of your eyes drop as the sweet extract gushes into your mouth. ●Crab risotto ●Kora sake ●Crab miso rouibe aging ●Crab fried Even though it's fried, the delicateness of the crab inside bursts forth and the inside of the batter is like heaven. The world has already changed. ●Crab sandwich It may seem new, but it was amazing. This is a wonderful dish that has more than just crab sandwiched in it. The buttery Danish bread blends well with the thick-flavored crab marinated in crab miso, creating a synergistic effect that enhances the deliciousness. ●I like crabs The crab sukiyaki is served separately with each ingredient, including the vegetables, cooked to match. The crab legs have a perfect balance of texture and sweetness that blends well with the soup. Lift the crab claws as if shabu-shabu and let the soup drip off, then repeat the process and cook little by little. The fibers have a slight outline and are smooth and supple. ●Kani Somen A cold dish that uses crab fibers to resemble somen noodles. The unparalleled smoothness of the fibers that gently unravel. Along with the cold soup, you can feel the pleasure as it falls down your throat and down into your stomach. ●Crab egg rice ●Crab rice porridge ●Dessert General Yamada's crab dishes, which change their appearance one after another with each dish, are a parade of ultimate deliciousness. I was happily at their mercy. It's worth the effort to come this far. There are no words for the overwhelming variety of crab dishes.

What surprised me the most was that there was no crab smell in the room at all. Even after eating, there was no fishy smell on my hands, which showed how fresh and perfect the crabs were prepared and processed. The temperature of all of the dishes is exquisitely controlled, so it's not just a restaurant where you can eat lots of delicious crab, but a restaurant where you can enjoy a crab kaiseki meal that is made with the utmost care. I experienced one of the luxuries you should experience at least once in your life. Thank you for the meal. Also, I can't really understand what he's saying with his stuttering and raspy voice. I'm sure he's bragging, but why doesn't he just buy the crabs instead of sticking his nose in? Oh, in that case, his mother has the rights to the auction, so there's nothing for the son to do.

Such a luxury store in a shopping district! ? It's like that. Crab entertainment with a parade of crabs, crabs, and crabs that won't leave you smelly or boring. Well it's delicious. It was great food and well worth the price. I felt a little disappointed because even though I said I wouldn't be allowed to take photos, I saw someone I went to take photos on their social media. (Translated by Google) There is no better crab than here. I look forward to each season as it evolves every year. Without a doubt, this is the restaurant where you can enjoy the best crab in Japan. If you go here, I definitely recommend the special course. You'll find such quantity and quality of Matsuba crab that you'll probably never eat so much Matsuba crab in a single day in your life. The crabs here are not from Tottori, but from Hyogo Prefecture. However, since it's a prefectural border, it seems a little tricky. Apparently it costs between 50,000 and 70,000 a cup. I did visit the crab market, but there were no crabs of this size (^◇^;) And, first of all, there is no crab smell. According to the general, fresh crabs don't smell bad. The crabs here are fresh, so the restaurant doesn't smell like crabs. and It certainly doesn't smell like crab at all. The taste is good, but the most important thing is the taste... It's so delicious that I've never encountered crab like this before. First, we start with crab miso. It's insanely delicious. There is no harshness at all. Also, regular crab dishes are a pain to eat, but here, the chef breaks everything down so you can eat it, so it's stress-free. A variety of items are available, including rouibe aged for one year, grilled crab, and crab hotpot. The method of making rice porridge here is very innovative. The raw eggs are piled up like a mille-feuille. I think you will be able to enjoy a new type of rice porridge. These days, creativity is on the rise, but this restaurant, which offers a full course of only crab, is amazing. This is a famous restaurant where you can experience the true depth of crab. I think this is the best crab dish in Japan. It's worth going to Tottori. It was a feast.

Food was really good. 900 yen for a very good curry. Not the largest portion but hits just right. Great location and a good way to start or wrap up your trip in tottori.

Portion is small compared to other places that sells curry so its a little bit on the pricey end. Taste wise, its good and the cutlet was good. It was thin, but not as thin as I thought it would be. Would definitely visit again if I have the chance to.

Went with a little bit of expectation since it’s one of the must-go in Tottori. I ordered the chicken katsu curry (¥900 for regular size) and the portion is extremely small, just 5 small pieces of chicken on top. I couldn’t even finish the rice. Taste wise, it’s quite blunt, not spiced enough for a curry. Service wise, just alright—nothing special. The price is quite high for the area but most probably because it’s an old and famous restaurant?! I wouldn’t recommend my friends to come...

I don't like posting mean reviews but the atmosphere in this restaurant was the worst on our trip so far. Very unfriendly vibes here. The food was just OK. You could do better to look around for something else.

Curry ok but katsu pork is thin. If more thickness, it will great. Up price is ok

Nice curry rice with chicken fillet, but the staff were not welcoming. Went there at around 11:00 and there was no toast or bread available.
