Nestled just outside the bustling city center, Tottori Sand Dunes is a breathtaking coastal expanse that stretches for 2 kilometers and boasts towering sand formations reaching heights of up to 45 meters. This stunning natural wonder, shaped over a staggering 100,000 years by sediment from the nearby Sendaigawa River and ocean currents, has become Tottori's most cherished tourist destination.
The Tottori Sand Dunes are truly breathtaking — a unique landscape you wouldn’t expect to find in Japan. Walking across the vast dunes feels like stepping into another world. The view of the ocean from the top is stunning, and it’s a fun experience whether you’re there for a relaxing stroll, photography, or a bit of adventure.
Maleena W — Google review
Very interesting but rather small place to see desert like terrain in Japan, there’s two bus stops, one with a rope way, the other without but closer. It was nice to chill on top of the dunes looking towards the ocean and nearby mountains. The beach looks amazing and the water is so clear, it would be a great place for a swim, but you aren’t allowed to.
Kenyanke — Google review
A desert which stretches along sea coast gives a serene wilderness. It’s a pure bucket list destination. Recommendations: there is no vending machine at the spot so better to bring water with you. Toilet: no Parking: plenty of paid parking. But there is free parking spaces in front of サンコスモスshop.
吉岡 — Google review
The sand dunes were absolutely incredible! It was definitely a workout — walking through the sand was so tiring, but honestly so worth it once you reach the top. The views were amazing and unlike anything I’ve seen before. Such a unique experience — I’d 100% recommend it, just make sure to bring water and good shoes!
Nicole C — Google review
This was my first time treading through a sand dune and IT WAS THE BEST TIME OF MY LIFE! On terms of parking, the price is reasonable and there are a lot of spaces. For the sand dune itself, although it was really windy (As the sand dune was facing the Sea of Japan), the view was very mesmerizing! However, my shoes and socks were covered in sand. So, I recommend you wear sandals / slippers to any kind of sand dunes! Therefore, you’ll have more fun! I highly recommend to go here if you ever have the chance to go to Tottori!
Wong W — Google review
The sand dunes are a really nice attraction, it is so beautiful but be ready to empty you shoes from all the sand afterwards! Go inside the information center to get your stamp if you are collecting them. The parking is 500 yen for 24 hours, but it is only valid as long as you don't exit.
Rosalie P — Google review
Go for a tourist stop horseback dune. But, if you cross to the other side (West), where there is more vegetation covered dunes, you will discover plenty of floral and fauna. Not many people on that side.
Ilka D — Google review
Amazing sand dunes, powdery sand, it’s literally a different side of Japan. We went there in mid-July, and it was scorching hot, so make sure to bring water and don’t forget to apply sunscreen. Nevertheless, it was absolutely beautiful .🤩

Jinpukaku Mansion, located in Tottori City, is a stunning example of Meiji era architecture. This 1907 French Renaissance-style house was designed by architect Katayama Tokuma and is now open for tours. The European-style building features large pillars, white walls, brick fireplaces, and a beautiful spiral staircase.
It is a European style building of great cultural significance. Is a 2 storied tile roofed, white wooden building. Its hipped roof is fitted with crown style ridge ornaments and baroque eave ornaments. There is a garden and pond behind the house.
GAN Y — Google review
Very well preserved French Renaissance building with lots of interesting artefacts inside. All of the information is in Japanese however there is an audio track played frequently that gives information in English. The spiral staircase built with no supporting beams is amazing and the gardens are just stunning! For the cheap ¥150 entrance fee, it is well worth a look!
Mary T — Google review
Only ¥150 admissions fee to this beautiful house and gardens. Enjoy good views from the second floor and also sitting in the Japanese style (fusion?) garden. To see the whole place, it only takes about 30 minutes. This space can also be rented out.

It is interseting to see a western residence on castle ruin area. The residence is very beautiful and I love to learn the history about it. However it is a pity that the wall decayed. It should be renovated.

Although the interior was closed for renovations for next couple years, the grounds were very scenic along with the tea house and pond.

Jinpu-kaku is a famous Western-style French inspired residence of Ikeda clan situated at the base of Tottori Castle Ruins.
Julie L — Google review
A beautiful Western-style building in Tottori. The entrance fee is only 150 yen. You can learn about the history of the building through the pictures inside it. Be careful that you have to take off your shoes before entering. There is no air conditioner inside so it was quite hot. It only takes 10 minutes to go around the building if you do not read the history part of it. The view from the garden is pretty, there is a grass area where you take photo of the building beautifully.

(Translated by Google) Tottori Hisamatsu Park, nestled on the ruins of Tottori Castle, is recognized as one of Japan's 100 most famous castles and 100 best cherry blossom viewing spots. Famous for its magnificent stone walls and renovated castle tower, it evokes memories of the Ikeda clan's past. In spring, approximately 230 Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom brilliantly, creating a picturesque scene for the ancient castle, which becomes even more magical when illuminated at night. The park boasts lush greenery, distinct seasonal scenery, and offers panoramic views of Tottori City and the Sea of Japan. Also, the park is adjacent to historical buildings such as Jinpukaku. This fusion of nature, history, and culture makes it a representative tourist attraction in Tottori City, offering a delightful experience for both history buffs and nature lovers. Historical landmark
Tottori Castle Ruins, also known as the 'Castle of the Eastern Clouds,' date back to the 16th century and were once a significant political center. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this formidable fortress, including stone walls and moats that offer insight into Japan's feudal past. The site is particularly popular during cherry blossom season, offering a picturesque setting for a leisurely stroll.
Great walk through the ruins and the gardens. Particularly enjoyed the walk up to the very top, 10 levels in total, about 30 minutes walking. It did get steeper after level five though, but will worth it for the view. Was there when the Sakura was in full bloom and it was awesome.
Simon R — Google review
As it was raining, so had to walk mindfully as the steps were slippery. Information was displayed at the designated reconstructed parts. We could also get a bird's eye view of Tottori as we looked down from the ruins at Mt Kyusho. Along the way up, we came across a fox shrine. There is a public toilet but looks like it has not been cleaned for quite some time.
GAN Y — Google review
I tried it in the evening, 8pm. I had a strong flashlight and right at the beginning I scared off a couple of deer. A minute later I scared off a couple of wild boars, very close to the base of the path ... At that point I preferred not to check if the flashlight would work against the the bear too so I preferred to go back to the hotel. Came back in the morning and went up. It takes about 20 mins from the shrine to the top, maps doesn't estimate this. Unlike other climbs in Japan this path is more difficult. I would not recommend it at night without a decent headlamp and a friend, not even just the descent.
Valentin U — Google review
There are many castle ruins all over Japan, and this one looks like many others, with just a bunch of stone walls left, but it wins points for offering a nice hike and view. The hike consists mostly of clambering up stones turned into steps big steps. It is a bit steep at some parts, and I was quickly out of breath and lacked energy because I skipped breakfast. Eat before you go and bring water. At my slow pace with many breaks it took about 45 minutes to get up, and much quicker, 20-30 minutes, back down. The other people on the hike were very friendly, too. Locals seem to enjoy using it for their morning walk. There are other trails at the top, perhaps leading down the other side of the mountain, but I did not know where they went and I had a train to catch. It would be fun to explore this area more! And watch out for bears (according to the signs).

The Tottori Castle Ruins, a 16th century hilltop fortress, offer stunning views of the city and beautiful cherry blossoms during their peak season. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful environment to picnic or take an easy hike up for panoramic vistas. However, those who venture further should take caution as proper hiking gear is recommended and there may be bears in the area. This historical landmark provides a unique opportunity to experience Japan's rich history while taking in its natural beauty.
Great to see the ruins and western style building. Once the city is finished, restoration then I would love to come back. I think this with visiting the sand dunes made for a great historic trip.

(visited over 50+ castle) No map. No map parking. No information. For such a historicaly famous castle, this was one do the most disappointing. I have been to about 60 castles so far. And this is my 37 in the "top 100 castle" stamp rally book. I drove. I get there and see no indication a castle park or museum. No castle parking. I see some sort of map. Pull over. Map is garbage. I even ask a passing Japanese person where is the castle parking. Even he says, yeah, I'm not sure this map is not good and don't know. I end up parking at some prefectural something or other parking lot. But where is the 100 castle stamp? I call my wife to please search google for some info in japanese. She find out it's some building, not related to the castle and closed every Monday!!!! Good things I didn't drive 8 hours and spend a few 10,000s bills to get here. Oh I did. Like I said, this is the 37th top 100 castle I have been to and none do them are closed but the major holidays. If they are, they have the stamp accessable somewhere, OR some information about where it is located. Determined, I walked to the not-affiliated museum, also closed but knocked on the window and got someone's attention. I asked them about the stamp. They actually had one for the castle. They let me in, let me stamp my book. But this was all pure luck and perseverance. None of this info is anywhere to be found in japanese or English. Very famous castle... With very little done to promote it, preserve it, or rebuild it. Can barely even get to it or find out about it. Top 100 but tottori treats it's like a last place. The sidewalk was really nice.

Same as most castles around Japan. Not wheelchair accessible or stroller friendly. Nice view at the top.

Tottori Prefecture offers more than just its famous sea and sand landscapes. The Uradome Coast, located within the Sanin Kaigan National Park, boasts a rugged coastline shaped by millions of years of erosion. This has resulted in stunning rocky islands and formations surrounded by white sandy beaches and pine trees, often likened to the iconic Matsushima view. Stretching over 9 miles along the water's edge, this coastal outlet is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
About 45 minute walk from kamagaiso observation deck. No pedestrian walkway but fairly flat slope. Very nice scenery, no tourists here so off the beaten path

The sea is beautifully clear with excellent visibility. There wasn’t as much current as I had expected, so I was able to swim with peace of mind. There’s also plenty of parking, and the easy access is another big plus.
Emma S — Google review
The vast, endless coastline is breathtakingly beautiful, and has been designated as a place of scenic beauty and a natural monument by Japan. Due to its similarity to the Matsushima landscape in Miyazaki Prefecture, it is known as the hidden gem of San'in Matsushima in Tottori Prefecture! Its famous feature is its transparency, which reaches a depth of 25 metres! It has also been rated as one of the most spectacular views in Japan!

Very cool museum with lots of different historical things to see aswell as geological and zoological exhibitions. Currently they have a bug exhibition on it was really cool! The kids seamed to be really loving it

There were two significant parts to his museum. The first was the natural History component which had quite a variety of land, air and water creatures preserved for your edification. I was glad to learn about the very large spiders that live in the sand dunes before I walked across the dunes. It's good to know what to look out for! There was also a selection of historical craft including pots, weaving, rice straw and more. The second exhibition space was for art, and the kogei exhibit up was an amazing display of single pieces from a wide variety of (somewhat local ) artists work in clay, lacquer, metals, and glass. 😍 I was a little sad I couldn't take pictures in that exhibit, but they did have QR codes on many of the pieces which took you to the artist bio and more examples of their work.

Additionally, there's a bread shop with sit-in options and easy access to Daimaru via an underpass.

Low efficiency In average, the counter take 10~15 minutes to address a small group of people’s (2~4) request, and take in average 5~10 minutes for a single person’s. Could probably take 1 hour for your counter service if there’s crowded. In most of other JR stations they just take 10~15 minutes with the same amount of people.
Huai-Hsuan H — Google review
The staff here are very friendly and helpful! There are also a number of eateries and convenience stores, as well as a department stall. The bread shop sells really nice breads, and there's a sit-in option too. On both exits of the stations you can find Lawson, but the exit beside 7-11 leads you to the bigger Lawson and its only a few steps away. The underpass leads you to the other side, where Daimaru is. You can also get to the sand dunes from this station.

I explained to the station master that I had traveled from Yonago via IC card to Kurayoshi and paid the fare by cash instead. I traveled to Tottori to get the card reset for reentry but I was forced to pay the fare again. I did not have any issues at the other stations in Tottori / Shimane so this is rather appalling. If this is the trouble I need to go through then you should do away with accepting IC at specific stations to begin with

Shikanojoseki Park in Tottori, Japan is a must-visit during springtime. This park, situated on the grounds of an ancient castle and along the banks of the Asahi River, offers a stunning display of cherry blossoms. These blooming trees can be found mainly along the riverbanks, creating a picturesque sight against the blue morning sky or even reflecting in the dark moat during nighttime.
In the autumn season the landscape is stunning.

(Translated by Google) 2025/04/03 It bloomed for 5 to 6 minutes. I visited in a light rain, and the parking lot had poor drainage and rain accumulated. Be careful of mud. The cherry blossoms in the parking lot didn't bloom well considering the thickness of their trunks. I was surprised to see an unexpected increase in the number of people as it started to rain lightly after sunset. There were many food stalls and it was very busy, but unfortunately there were no trash cans. Park
Inaba Senbonzakura, which means "a thousand cherry trees," is located in the eastern Tottori Prefecture. It's part of the Coca Cola West Sports Park and offers a serene setting for hanami picnics. Visitors praise its beauty during Sakura season, noting that it's less crowded than other major cities like Kyoto and Osaka. The garden is also recommended for autumn visits to see the stunning fall foliage.
The only English comment without translation is here. As a tourist, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE! You need to be here during Sakura season to understand the beauty, surrounded by cherry blossoms and having a hanami picnic. This place is like no other in the major cities, like Kyoto/Osaka etc. This place is NOT crazily filled with tourists (except for the few of us) and it makes the whole experience a lot more surreal. This place is the epitome of how enjoying a hanami should be like. Filled with so many sakura trees, I'd highly recommend here for even just a stroll. Do yourself a favour and come here before tourists swarm in, which I believe will be in the near future.

(Translated by Google) Visited on 2022/11/14 "Inaba Senbonzakura Cherry Blossom Garden" on Monday afternoon in late autumn. The hustle and bustle of spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom was a lie, and the place was quiet and deserted. The leaves of the cherry blossoms themselves, both in the cherry blossom orchards along the slope and on the top of the slope, have fallen considerably, but on the other hand, now is the best time to see the autumn leaves, including the surrounding areas. The scenery inside the artificial pond, on the small island, and around it is especially beautiful and worth a visit. Visited on 2022/12/06 In the early afternoon during the rain, I walked counterclockwise around the artificial pond from the parking lot at the entrance, and I could still see the autumn leaves🍁. (Translated by Google) In August 1863 (Bunkyu 3), a new Ougi Palace (Ogi Palace) was built within the castle grounds at the current location of Jinpukaku, and the Horyuin Garden (Horyuin Garden) still exists as the garden of the palace, although its shape has changed. This is a garden that conveys the feudal lord's garden style (ikeizumi stroll style) of the Edo period. Horyuin (Sadako Ikeda) became the wife of Yoshitaka Ikeda, the 11th lord of the Tottori domain, but she soon lost him at the age of 17. Afterwards, he entered the country from his main residence in Edo and moved to the newly built Ogi Palace in Tottori Castle. Time passed and with the Meiji Restoration, Tottori Castle was dismantled, and in 1907 (Meiji 40), Jinpukaku was built on the site of the Ogi Palace. The view from the terrace of Jinpukaku (Horyuin Garden) has been preserved as the rear garden of Jinpukaku, and as a result, the space has a synergistic appeal as a harmonious combination of a Japanese-style garden and a European-style Western-style building. (Horyuin Garden) was built by the next 12th lord, Lord Yoshinori, to comfort Horyuin, who was widowed at the age of 17 within a short period of one and a half years after marrying a feudal lord and entering the country from Edo. I did. The garden tells many hidden stories of the many people who visit it. (Translated by Google) To get to Anzo Park, walk along Prefectural Route 281 for about 15 minutes from the Azou bus stop, the last stop on the Matsukami Line bus. In the spring season, the parking lot is opened and you can enjoy playing tennis and walking in the mountains. I don't know what it is like now, but about 10 years ago it was a place for elementary school and kindergarten field trips. 20200326 I came here for the first time in a while just before lunch. There was no one in sight. There was a sign in the management office asking people to contact us if they needed it. It's a park where you can do athletics, but will it be available for use in the spring season? . In any case, it takes about 10 minutes by car from here to (Anzo Forest Park). We are currently preparing for the opening on April 15th. National park
As the name suggests, the San'in Geopark coastline actually runs from Kyoto prefecutre through Hyogo, Tottori, and Shimane Prefectures. So while the National Park is listed as being located here, its quite extensive, and even includes the Oki islands. The region has wholly unique geological features, rare volcanic rock formations, some of which are jutting right out of the ocean. This would be a spectacular road trip, following the entire coastline, stopping at natural hot springs (again thanks to the volcanic nature of the coast) and local stands that sell local vegetables and fruit (again because the soil is fertile due to previous volcanic activity). I love this coastline and try to explore it whenever possible. It's intricate and there is always something amazing to see.

Yoshiishiroyama Park is a charming spot to visit, especially during cherry blossom season when the park is adorned with beautiful blooms. The castle-like observation deck offers stunning views of the surrounding scenery. While entrance to the castle is free, it's worth noting that the park can get quite crowded during peak seasons. Additionally, visitors should be aware of narrow roads and limited parking nearby. The park also features a well-maintained and picturesque vertical moat, characteristic of Yamashiro.
