Nature & Parks
Hiyoriyama Park, situated on a 56-meter artificial hill, offers breathtaking panoramic views of Sakata City and the Pacific Ocean. On clear days, visitors can even catch a glimpse of Matsushima Bay. The park is renowned for its stunning cherry blossoms, with over 400 cherry trees creating a picturesque setting for hanami viewing from mid to late April.
Lovely park. You can see a lot of things in one place. The lighthouse is my favorite one. The place is quite large and not so many people visit it. It's also recommended to visit some interesting temples around the park.

A quiet park with little people visiting. Can see some hawk flying in the sky, and can see many boats at the ports too. I only saw a foreigner when I spent my 2 hours there. Come if you like some history thingy and quiet place to just enjoy the day especially during Sakura season because I can see the trees are there with a big field to camp! Come watch more of the park in my YouTube channel "Aerick Wanderland"

This is Very awesome! Local people may not aware, but this park is very good as it is filled with many songs and poetry of historical person. There is a ship, this also tells us about historical lessons. The shape of lake and the landscape imitates the ancient sea route of business.

Nestled in the historic buildings of a former Maiko and Geisha house, Sanno Club offers visitors a unique glimpse into Japan's rich cultural heritage. Originally established as Uhachiro in 1894, this venue has transformed from a high-end restaurant to an engaging cultural site. Guests can immerse themselves in the art of crafting Kasafuku ornaments—charming miniature creations that dangle from vibrant red umbrellas—and delve into the fascinating history of the Kitamaebune Ships at the downstairs museum.
Kind of old Japanese restaurant. Now full of Japanese hanging decorations. There’s a tea room on 1st floor, nice garden can be seen. Lot of antique items are remaining on the 1st floor. No real rush even in holidays. Worth visiting if you have an interest on tradition Japanese items. Entrance fee is ¥800. Car park available.

Hidden treasure in Sakata! So thrilled I came across the Sanno Club while looking at area sightseeing places in our hotel. This gorgeous former fine dining establishment has been turned into a truly magical space. The woodwork and architecture throughout the building alone is worth a visit, but the former banquet hall is now this lovely place to see the handcrafted work of local artists, both current and historical. Highly recommended.

This place is magical! There is a cool history to it and the display of the kasafuku was stunning beyond words. The building is a beautiful example of old architecture that is so well preserved. The staff was super nice and sweet. Highly recommend a stop by while you are in Sakata.

My friends and I have who have all extensively traveled around Japan were very impressed with this building. The attention to detail of the design and craftsmanship of the building is a testament to how wealthy the family and area was! The second floor room filled with Yasafuku is absolutely stunning and magical. We all degree this is a very underrated site.

Probably one of if not the coolest thing we did on our trip. We got there right when it opened so it was so quiet and peaceful and the woman helped us and explained the meaning of everything upstairs. Then she even gave us a tour around the downstairs as well. The shop also has soooo many cool gifts for anyone. HIGHLY recommend a visit!!

Homma Museum, established in 1947, showcases a wide range of Japanese arts and crafts exhibitions featuring tea ceremonies. This museum is known for its rich collection of historical artifacts from the Shonai region, including original works by renowned haiku poet Matsuo Basho. However, it's the unique and exceptional traditional garden that sets it apart from other museums- a must-visit destination for nature lovers.
So impressed by the villa, garden and art collection! It's so relaxing to drink matcha and look out to the garden. I didn't want to leave!!! Homma clan is a great art collector. I was able to read all the descriptions in english using the QR code! Well done!

Museum entrance fee is bit expensive, not worth visiting if you are not interested on Japanese history. Outside there’s an house you can use the same the ticket to enter. Garden is well designed and maintained typical Japanese style one. Japanese style tea room is there where you can enjoy Japanese green tea and sweets for ¥600.

A nice museum that hosts traveling exhibitions, I really loved the absolutely incredible garden, it blooms with a beautiful serenity that sings to you from inside.

Went there for the Hina Doll Exhibition. The front office staff is friendly and helpful. You can request her for an English pamphlet but explanation in English is readily available by scanning barcode (via internet). I paid 450 yen (cost for university student, bring your student card), but adult entry is 1000 yen covering all parts. The museum consist of exhibition buiding, Japanese garden, and villa. From the main entrance you will enter the exhibition building first. It's full of art and doll collection from various period. I recommend not to go alone because the nuance is kinda... vintage and eerie. Note that the toilet is only here, so make sure to empty your bladder here before moving on to the other parts of the museum. The garden is serene, you can hear birds and moving tree branches house. You can also see the beautiful villa and blue pond filled with huge koi fish from the garden. To enter the villa, just follow the mark. You will be greeted by another friendly staff. When I went there, they also show the hina dolls arragements and the 傘福 (kasa fuku) native to Sakata. The hina dolls exhibition lasts till 6 April 2023. They also have umbrella service for free if it's raining, and you can enjoy tea+dessert in the villa at additional cost. You can also bring professional camera, because photo and video are allowed in every parts. I won't spill the most beautiful part because it has to be you who discover it😄

This is a atypical museum which including a park and a historical building. There is not much exhibit showing in the main building but the most attractive thing to do is sitting on the historical building watching the park which seemingly as a picture of nature. The museum is equipped with carpark and toilet and is located in a convenience place.

Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Reopened in 2014, the Kamo Aquarium in Tsuruoka has transformed into a cutting-edge attraction, featuring an impressive display of jellyfish. Boasting the largest collection of jellyfish in the world with over 50 different species, it has earned recognition from the Guinness World Records. The Jellyfish Dream Theater showcases these elegant creatures in colorfully lit tanks, offering visitors a mesmerizing experience. Additionally, guests can enjoy seal shows and interact with starfish at the touch pool.
Did not expect much but this place is full of surprises. Disregard the initial fish tanks This is home to 88 of all 120 jellyfish species in the word and the prix de resistance is the bioluminescence jelly fishes the subject of which won Japan a Nobel prize in chemistry with the GFP protein research .
Wing A — Google review
It is an interesting aquarium but when we visited it, it was quite busy. If you like jelly fish, you would love this place, as they have good educational display as well, showing the jellyfish at different stages of life. I found the admission fee of ¥1,500 to be slightly on the steep side considering the size of the place.
Un V — Google review
This aquarium is really beautiful, and I enjoyed the many kinds of jellyfish I could look at. The only downside was that a lot of people were taking videos and would stand for a long time in front of the aquariums. I guess I’m too old to appreciate that! We went to the restaurant and had an amazing delicious and very reasonably priced lunch. If you are a seafood lover, I know it’s funny to eat seafood at an aquarium, but still, it was amazing!
Don M — Google review
A cruise ship stop in Sakata gave us the chance to visit the Kamo Aquarium. The jellyfish room where they hold concerts is otherworldly and unique, but my favorite was the tank of baby salmon. Ive attached those photos first. Nice T-shirts in the gift shop, good ice cream and a cold drink machine with my favorite Mets Lemon Squash. A perfect day.
Wendy F — Google review
It is an aquarium, but has an extensive jellyfish exhibit. We were able to see dozens of different species of jellyfish. There were glowing jellyfish, and the display of jellyfish in a huge tank was breathtaking.
Yutaka K — Google review
The jellyfish are incredible! So amazing to see so many different types in one place
ウルフJamie — Google review
Coming from a country with much stricter animal rights rules and regulations, going to this aquarium was extremely upsetting. The tanks were hugely overcrowded with little to no natural vegetation. There is no natural terrain in the jellyfish tanks whatsoever, whilst aesthetically pleasing this cannot be in the animals best interest. Worst of all was the seals. There were six or seven of them in one tiny swimming pool, going round and round in laps. There were two seals in isolation in the smallest pools imaginable, one was swimming in tight circles desperate for stimulation whilst the other was barking in distress. I have attached photos of their horrendous conditions. I left with my heart in my throat, deeply upset to have given this organisation my money.
Hannah D — Google review
The main attraction here is the jellyfish collection and lecture. I wasn't expecting much at first, but I was simply fascinated by the collection. They also have a restaurant where you can eat jellyfish and puffer fish if you're up for it. My only complaint is that the seals should have a much bigger space to live in than they have.

Mountain peak
Nature & Parks
Mountains
Mount Chōkai is a massive active volcano located at the prefectural border of Yamagata and Akita. It offers various hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and holds a history of spiritual activities. The area features unique rock formations shaped like candles and mammoths due to submarine volcano activity and wave erosion.
I had a chance to hike Mt. Chokai on August 12th. It was one of the best hiking I have ever had. There are many trails but the most popular one is the Hokodate trail. I arrived here at around 8:30 and it was packed already. Not only hikers but also nature lovers and campers were there to enjoy the spectacular scenery. The weather was awesome. You can take a pleasure of seeing Nihon kai (Japan Sea) after a beautiful green nature. Hokodate has restaurants, shops, information center, bathrooms, vending machines, observation deck etc. pretty much everything you will need. The trail starts across the road behind the rest house. Don’t forget to fill out the hiking form for safety. The course stars very smooth and nice path. Then a well maintained road with lots of big rocks comes. The rocks are flatted and placed well on the way. There is an observation deck after 5-10 min but no need to wast time here since there are other places on the way. After an hour you cross the intersection of two small mountains. This place had a great view with lots of flowers and snow on top of the mountains. After a short descending you will climb a steep section. This part might be a bit challenging but you will forgot everything once you reach the top of this section. There is a hut here. Good place for a break. I was sitting and watching the scenery in the front section but realized that the Chokai lake can be seen behind section. So just go around the hut and enjoy the Chikai Lake’s amazing scenery. Some people return from this point after having a walk around the lake. If you like to make the summit than just keep going by following the signs behind the hut. The rocks in this sections are more random which makes it a bit harder to walk. I am sure you will stop time to time to take photo of both Chokai-ko and the mountains on the other side. After about 20 min you will see a descending section follows with another peak. It was my first time hiking here so I thought this is the peak of Mt. Chokai. Actually it is just half way through. However the scenery and path were breathtaking. Before starting to ascend this peak you will see another path joins from the right side. This is the one coming from the waterfalls trail ( Ichinotaki, ninotaki ). From this point on the path becomes narrower and challenging. Once you reach the peak of this section you will see a small sitting area where you can have a short break. Soon you will see another sign at the fork. The right one goes through 3 different mountain peaks before the Chokai’s summit. Seemed too challenging. The left one goes to the hut near to the summit. I went from the left one. You can go from left and come back from the right one. The left section turns more challenging and steeper. You descend first and climb up to through rocky path. The first section is very and very slippery. Take your time, don’t rush. It was very crowded and I had to wait people in-front of me. You can see the summit from this point but it is not a direct path. You will go behind the mountain. You will see the signs every 15-30 min. It took me more the an hour to reach the summit from this point. On the way you will see some people on the top of the mountains on your right side. This is the other path goes to the summit. Once I saw the hut I had relief to reach up to here. The hut is big. There is a restaurant, a museum, a temple, bathrooms etc. You can buy drinks or have a cup of noodles. However this is not the peak yet. On your left you will see the big scary rocks. Just follow the white arrows. Don’t look back, just keep going. It is normally a 30 min climbing the peak. The peak is very small. Just take a photo with the sign and respect other people. This is the Shinzan peak 2136m (Mt. Chokai) Although you can descend from the same path there is another path on the other section to go back to the hut. Alternatively you can follow the path that goes to the peak of the other mountains to reach the starting point.
Recep D — Google review
Snow-free season is good, but snow-covered season is great. The slopes of the vast snowfall of the sunny day of May are hot. The new mountain, which is bordered by the remaining snow, is even more rough. You can go down and slide freely on a large snow surface by drawing a spur. It is a fun unique to skiing. However, you have to be careful enough to take the course after Ohama hut. If you make a mistake in one of the ridges, you will go down in the wrong direction. Check the course you have climbed and then slide down.
Hank H — Google review
I will give this 5star not because of the service but the amazing views on top! Only those who are willing to reach the top will have an amazing experience!

I normally avoid gluten and rarely eat noodles, but since I'd come all the way to Yamagata, Japan's highest ramen consumer, I decided to try the local wontons (wonton noodles). I ordered the "large wonton" without noodles for 1,050 yen. The skin was thin and the filling was small, but it was still very filling. Just like the name wonton suggests, the skin was like a cloud, so you could swallow it. It did burn the inside of my mouth, though (lol). Ramen restaurant
Kachofugetsu Sakata is a delightful culinary gem that showcases the rich flavors of Japanese cuisine, particularly through its ramen offerings. Visitors often rave about the light yet deeply flavorful broth, which strikes a perfect balance between seafood and chicken dashi. The medium-thick curly noodles complement the soup beautifully, creating an enjoyable dining experience. Many patrons have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of this establishment, especially considering their previous expectations based on other local eateries.
Another 5 stars Ramen shop! Please try their Shio Yuzu Wanton Men (read as Shee-Yo Yoo Zu) It's a wanton noodle instead of normal ramen (but the noodle is still ramen anyway) This sounds like Chinese wanton noodle but it's different from Cantonese nor other Chinese wanton noodle because the noodle they using is actually ramen so you don't have the alkaline taste at all! The prawn they using is very fresh and delicious! The wanton (dumpling) is quite similar to what we have in Chinese restaurant but the noodle and soup are really nice. They were already showing people inside, and the line slowly made its way inside. The first group filled up, and I had to wait about 20 minutes for the next group to be shown inside. I chose wonton noodles from the menu on the ticket machine at the entrance and waited at the counter. My bowl arrived in less than five minutes after I sat down. It was topped with two pieces of pork, five wontons? bamboo shoots, and green onions, and the noodles were regular-thick, curly noodles. First, I took a sip of the soup, which was lighter than I expected. It was a refreshing, clear broth with a seafood-based broth that was delicious. The minced meat in the wontons was larger than at other places I've eaten at, and the flavor went perfectly with the wontons. The pork slices were firm and chewy, and the flavor was infused into them, making them a great choice for eating with noodles. There were also many other menu items, so I'll definitely be ordering again. Thank you for the meal. Customers continued to arrive behind us. This time, I ordered a large portion of spicy miso shrimp wonton noodles with a boiled egg topping and rice. My wife ordered spicy miso shrimp wonton noodles with three meat wontons and rice. The bowls arrived in less than 10 minutes. There was a layer of oil and they stayed piping hot from start to finish. The seafood-based soup went really well with the spicy miso and was delicious. There are so many places I want to visit again, it's hard to choose😅 (Original) Googleで調べてお邪魔しました。

(Translated by Google) I visited "Kachou Fuugetsu" for dinner. This time, I ordered wonton noodles and rice. I placed the pork slices that come on top of the ramen on the rice, then spread the garlic provided by the waiter on top. Then, by pouring a little ramen sauce over it and sprinkling a little pepper, I had a delicious pork rice bowl. I recommend eating the ramen with a little garlic and pepper. Using jasmine tea instead of water leaves a refreshing taste and pairs perfectly with the ramen. The soup is a little sweet, but I added a little salt to make it stronger, which was perfect for my taste and was very delicious. The original flavor is of course delicious, but adjusting the seasoning a little can make it even more satisfying. Overall, this is a restaurant where you can customize your meal to your liking, and the pork rice bowl, ramen, and soup are all excellent. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for dinner in Sakata.

The wontons were melt-in-your-mouth and the shrimp was plump. 🎶 It was absolutely delicious! The customer service was also very good and I was impressed. I'd definitely like to visit this restaurant again if I'm in Sakata.

The shrimp wontons were super thin but didn't fall apart! The soup was so flavorful that you could drink it endlessly and never get bored! It was amazing. This is a restaurant I've definitely decided to visit again next time I'm in Sakata. Hirata Bokujo Tonya is a popular spot, especially on Saturdays around 6 PM. The place tends to be quieter on Mondays. Visitors usually spend about 45 minutes here. One of the highlights is the Sangen pork meat platter, which is known for its delicious and tender pork cuts. The portions are generous, but the quality of the meat makes it enjoyable without feeling too heavy.
Everything is delicious! The first miso soup was so good but the next time you refill, you will get a different miso soup, a simpler one. The place looks big on the outside but a little crowded inside. Overall, it’s a good restaurant. ❤️

The Tonkatsu here is absolutely amazing. Its juicy and soft and has super rich flavor. Its perfectly fried and the cabbage that comes with it is a perfect pair. Their food is also organic! Would definitely recommend you stop by here if you like tonkatsu!

(Translated by Google) Visited on a trip in February 2025. The thick-sliced Sangenton pork set was offered for 1,200 yen in a campaign, and the minced meat cutlet set was offered for 300 yen, but in a good way, it's not food in this price range. The pork cutlet was fried crispy thanks to the good oil, and the meat was soft and melt-in-the-mouth. Very delicious. I had a connection to this area from around 2003 to 2006, and I used it several times during that time, and it looked exactly the same as it did back then, giving me a nostalgic feeling. The store is still the same as it was back in the day, and it is still clean enough that you won't feel the passing of 20 years. (Translated by Google) I ordered the Kinka pork mixed set meal and prosciutto. The taste and service were just average for a tonkatsu restaurant, with the only notable difference being the ohitashi (boiled greens) served as an appetizer. It came with three condiments: grated daikon radish, wasabi, and yuzu pepper. The portions were the size of a pinky fingernail, so they were too small. It didn't really seem like they were supposed to spice things up, but they were fine. The sesame seeds were grated by the customer, but I found it unhelpful that the portion size couldn't be adjusted. The salad dressings were plentiful, but the lack of tonkatsu sauces was disappointing. I ordered the "Lumiere" lunch course, which included hors d'oeuvres, soup, main course, dessert, bread, and coffee or tea. For the main course, I chose the Yamagata beef hamburger steak. (Translated by Google) I had high expectations, having enjoyed a fantastic course lunch and dessert at La Soupier, the restaurant run by the same chef who previously served here. The service, value for money, and ambiance were all of a high standard, as expected. However, while I may be in the minority, some of the dishes from the value lunch were not to my liking. I've tried the lobster soup offered at other French and Italian restaurants, and even though this is the original, I prefer it a little creamier, more like a potage. The Western-style stewed potato I selected seemed a little bland, and in contrast, the crème brûlée for dessert was surprisingly sweet, with the burnt topping being more than just bitter. I could understand if the quality was due to some kind of error in the cooking process, but if I tasted it and it was correct according to the manual, I'll just have to accept that I'm just not keeping up with the taste of Sakata's leading French cuisine. I think I would have been more satisfied if I had chosen the premium lunch or special evening course. I would like to return if I have the opportunity. I went to Sakata Station for the first time in a while and was surprised at how much the streetscape had changed. It's right in front of the station, so it's convenient for people using the station. There seems to be a dedicated parking lot, but the adjacent parking lot behind the building is free for two hours, which is plenty of time if you just want to eat, so I think it's easiest to use that. It's small and has limited seating, so it's probably best to make a reservation. The design gives you a view of the outside, which creates a nice open feeling. I had a course meal for lunch, which was delicious.
