Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Reopened in 2014, the Kamo Aquarium in Tsuruoka has transformed into a cutting-edge attraction, featuring an impressive display of jellyfish. Boasting the largest collection of jellyfish in the world with over 50 different species, it has earned recognition from the Guinness World Records. The Jellyfish Dream Theater showcases these elegant creatures in colorfully lit tanks, offering visitors a mesmerizing experience. Additionally, guests can enjoy seal shows and interact with starfish at the touch pool.
Did not expect much but this place is full of surprises. Disregard the initial fish tanks This is home to 88 of all 120 jellyfish species in the word and the prix de resistance is the bioluminescence jelly fishes the subject of which won Japan a Nobel prize in chemistry with the GFP protein research .
Wing A — Google review
It is an interesting aquarium but when we visited it, it was quite busy. If you like jelly fish, you would love this place, as they have good educational display as well, showing the jellyfish at different stages of life. I found the admission fee of ¥1,500 to be slightly on the steep side considering the size of the place.
Un V — Google review
This aquarium is really beautiful, and I enjoyed the many kinds of jellyfish I could look at. The only downside was that a lot of people were taking videos and would stand for a long time in front of the aquariums. I guess I’m too old to appreciate that! We went to the restaurant and had an amazing delicious and very reasonably priced lunch. If you are a seafood lover, I know it’s funny to eat seafood at an aquarium, but still, it was amazing!
Don M — Google review
A cruise ship stop in Sakata gave us the chance to visit the Kamo Aquarium. The jellyfish room where they hold concerts is otherworldly and unique, but my favorite was the tank of baby salmon. Ive attached those photos first. Nice T-shirts in the gift shop, good ice cream and a cold drink machine with my favorite Mets Lemon Squash. A perfect day.
Wendy F — Google review
It is an aquarium, but has an extensive jellyfish exhibit. We were able to see dozens of different species of jellyfish. There were glowing jellyfish, and the display of jellyfish in a huge tank was breathtaking.
Yutaka K — Google review
The jellyfish are incredible! So amazing to see so many different types in one place
ウルフJamie — Google review
Coming from a country with much stricter animal rights rules and regulations, going to this aquarium was extremely upsetting. The tanks were hugely overcrowded with little to no natural vegetation. There is no natural terrain in the jellyfish tanks whatsoever, whilst aesthetically pleasing this cannot be in the animals best interest. Worst of all was the seals. There were six or seven of them in one tiny swimming pool, going round and round in laps. There were two seals in isolation in the smallest pools imaginable, one was swimming in tight circles desperate for stimulation whilst the other was barking in distress. I have attached photos of their horrendous conditions. I left with my heart in my throat, deeply upset to have given this organisation my money.
Hannah D — Google review
The main attraction here is the jellyfish collection and lecture. I wasn't expecting much at first, but I was simply fascinated by the collection. They also have a restaurant where you can eat jellyfish and puffer fish if you're up for it. My only complaint is that the seals should have a much bigger space to live in than they have.

Shonai Shrine is a Shinto sanctuary located on the grounds of a historic castle site in Japan. It was built after the dismantling of the original castle and now enshrines four feudal lords of the Shonai domain, known as the Sakai clan lords. The shrine maintains a strong connection to its former rulers, with historical items such as armor and dolls from the Sakai family displayed in its treasure hall.
This shrine is located in the center of Tsuruoka. It is small, but has many visitors and is worshipped by many people. Various flowers are painted on the ceiling of the main hall, so it is worth paying attention to this when praying.

Nothing bad. It’s a nice small shrine with a long history. This was part of Tsuruoka castle. That’s probably why there’s a treasure room where you can see Samurai’s equipments. The armor, Katana, bows and arrows are worth a look.
Hilo I — Google review
Serene place where you can pray and participate in many festivals. Their bunny fortune of the year is cute. I couldn't help but buy one. They also have other activities aside from religious one such as yoga, matcha ad wagashi tasting, making hinagashi, hina dolls exhibitions, etc, which you can check on their social media. The priest and shrine maidens are friendly to everyone, including foreigners. They have a small water basin that they fill with flowers of many type, and they change it accordingly. It's my favorite part of the shrine.

Selected as one of Japan's 100 best cherry blossom viewing spots, the shrine is located within Tsuruoka Park and is a famous spot where 700 cherry trees bloom in full glory in mid-April. Chido Museum, designed by the acclaimed architect Shigeru Ban, seamlessly blends historical Western and Japanese buildings with local cultural artifacts. The museum showcases a collection of cultural items from the Sakai family, folklore materials, and historic structures from the Shonai region. Notable highlights include a garden residence favored by the feudal lord and a home dating back to the Edo Period. Additionally, visitors can marvel at an impressive assortment of iwai-bandori, straw backpacks used for celebratory occasions.
very enlightening learning about the history of the place. the blue old police post?? UNBELIEVABLE!! the view of Tsuruoka?? UNMATCHED!! the garden?? FORGERTABOURIT!! 🤩
Almariah — Google review
We arrived at the museum around 1.5hr before closing. I asked the lady (I am a native Japanese speaker) at the reception how long we would need to see everything and she said an hour, so we went in. There is no way you can properly visit the place in an hour. If you are just rushing through, may be yeah but if you want to properly visit the place and read the description of the exhibits, no, you will need well more than an hour! We were not pleased at all considering the JPY1,000 per person entrance fee they charged! The wee miniature figure exhibit was very interesting. We were also pleasantly surprised to see Mcintosh architecture/design represented in the dolls house section. The traditional river boat/canoe exhibit was unusual and interesting. They also have a small Japanese garden at the back, which by the time we saw it, it was getting too dark. Is it worth a visit? Yes, definitely, but not if you only have an hour. Shame, it would have been a four star attraction if it weren't for the wrong advice we were given regarding the time needed to visit the place.
Un V — Google review
When in the neighbourhood, recommend to spend time here. Allowed me to better understand the depth of some of the history of this part of Japan. Easy parking on the property.

A fairly interesting museum of local culture, architecture, and the like. I thought the entry fee of 700 yen was a bit rich given the source of most exhibits (donations), the size of the museum (not enormous) and the subject matter overall, but reasonable people can differ on this point, I expect...
John E — Google review
If you are an university student, you could get special price by showing your ID card. There are several buildings to visit and take a look, and the garden is so pretty. It's nice enjoying the view by only sitting on tatami. The stairs inside the police office a little bit too high, so be careful if you decide to go up

Zenpoji Temple, an ancient Buddhist temple dating back to the Heian period, is nestled in the serene Dewa Sanzan area near Tsuruoka's coastal region. The temple offers daily prayers and invites visitors to participate in Zazen meditation, providing a tranquil space for spiritual reflection. Monks-in-training frequent this sacred site, which boasts remarkable buildings designated as Tangible Cultural Properties.
Beautiful temple flushed with history, art, and culture! The prayer service is amazing to watch too!

No, it's not as old nor as famous (at least to gai-jins) as other temples but I loved the serene atmopshere of this temple with the total lack of tourists. Despite the aged looks, most of the structures are from the 19th C, including the five-story pagoda. There is a pond a short walk from this temple where you can see (if you are lucky) a carp with a human face.

Having been to many temples in many areas of Japan, we really enjoyed this one. Instead of overcrowded and smaller temples in Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka, this one is far more interesing and also more serene. You can walk around feeling all alone even on a weekend. The staff is very friendly and for a small fee you can see the inside and even enjoy a service. A fabulous temple in our opinion.

The Sankyo-Soko Rice Storehouses Site, built around 1893, comprises of a dozen warehouses that serve as a museum and souvenir shop today. The cluster of storehouses features traditional architecture to marvel at and is just a 20-minute walk from the station. Visitors can spend hours here or explore nearby attractions too. The site offers an interesting glimpse into the past and has been renovated to feature modern shops and restaurants while still retaining its classic atmosphere.
The parking lot is not at the Google map spot or the car GPS spot. You have to go around the corner to the main road and find the parking (which was free). Great to walk around and very peaceful. The giftshop was nicely laid out and well priced. The little museum is very cute. There are several toilets.

A row of ancient warehouse that has origin a few hundred years ago. Place is visited by tourists for photography opportunities as there isn’t much explanation on the history. The warlord who started this also introduced a kind of small boat that’s fast and good for movement of produces along the river and its tributaries.

Must visit place when you are in Sakata. For me, the best time to visit this place when autumn comes. It's recommended to get to know about Oshin first before you come. The place is so cozy and not really crowded during weekdays. There are souvenir store and some food stalls of you want to eat something for lunch. There are a lot of kinds of souvenirs that you can find. Sadly, the museum is closed.

Nestled within a tranquil forest, Maruike Pond is a hidden gem that captivates visitors with its stunning turquoise waters. This small yet enchanting pond, measuring just 20 meters in diameter and reaching depths of 3.5 meters, is fed by natural springs and surrounded by a scenic path perfect for leisurely strolls.
The color of the water will be beautiful with the sunlight. The atmosphere is really calming, surrounded by the high trees. There is a small temple in the edge of the lake made this place feel more sacred. It's a bit difficult to find because there is no big sign in the road. But if you follow the google maps, you'll find it. Good place to visit!
Pinasindi W — Google review
It was just as beautiful as described, added charm from the woods around it, the atmosphere was magical. Very glad to have visited. Still, definitely has to be a sunny day!
Säde R — Google review
Come in a sunny day at 10:00-14:00. The turquoise but crystal clear colour of the pond is glittering. It’s a small place and has a calming atmosphere. But, there are not many photographic subjects. It is not worth a visit itself. And, it is not easy to find. You have to drive there and park in the open space in front of a salmon hatchery. Facing the hatchery, walk to the right along the path, see the sign 丸池樣 and cross a little bridge, turn left and walk up the path a bit and you will see the pond on your left. It’s just a few minutes walk. Parking is free. Note: Remember to keep the water clean ~ so please don’t touch the water!

Sushi restaurant
Suzu Masa is an extraordinary one-word restaurant in Tokyo that offers an amazing Omakase experience for lunch, priced at 3000 yen. With only 20 spots available, it's a sought-after dining destination. One of their outstanding sushi creations is the Madai, which features sweet snapper seasoned with salt and sesame on top. This unique preparation sets it apart as one of the best nigiri sushi pieces you can find.
I have had a lot of sushi in my life and I can safely say this has been my favorite experience thus far. I had the omakase option. The chef somehow elevates the sushi to heights I have never experienced before. The play on texture, the perfect seasoning on each piece truly made the experience one should try at least once in their lifetime. Given the opportunity I will definitely go back!

We came to eat in this restaurant by chance. And what a mind-blowing food! Freshness, textures, taste and everything else is not only of highest quality but also in its own unparalleled league. We ate at numerous sushi venues, including famous and Michelin starred ones, and honestly nothing beats the delight we felt while eating at this place. Our most heartful thanks to the chef and his team for this unforgettable experience!

Day 2

North side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the north side side of town. Start the day off with Hiyoriyama Park, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Homma Museum of Art. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Hiyoriyama Park, situated on a 56-meter artificial hill, offers breathtaking panoramic views of Sakata City and the Pacific Ocean. On clear days, visitors can even catch a glimpse of Matsushima Bay. The park is renowned for its stunning cherry blossoms, with over 400 cherry trees creating a picturesque setting for hanami viewing from mid to late April.
Lovely park. You can see a lot of things in one place. The lighthouse is my favorite one. The place is quite large and not so many people visit it. It's also recommended to visit some interesting temples around the park.

A quiet park with little people visiting. Can see some hawk flying in the sky, and can see many boats at the ports too. I only saw a foreigner when I spent my 2 hours there. Come if you like some history thingy and quiet place to just enjoy the day especially during Sakura season because I can see the trees are there with a big field to camp! Come watch more of the park in my YouTube channel "Aerick Wanderland"

Nestled in the historic buildings of a former Maiko and Geisha house, Sanno Club offers visitors a unique glimpse into Japan's rich cultural heritage. Originally established as Uhachiro in 1894, this venue has transformed from a high-end restaurant to an engaging cultural site. Guests can immerse themselves in the art of crafting Kasafuku ornaments—charming miniature creations that dangle from vibrant red umbrellas—and delve into the fascinating history of the Kitamaebune Ships at the downstairs museum.
Kind of old Japanese restaurant. Now full of Japanese hanging decorations. There’s a tea room on 1st floor, nice garden can be seen. Lot of antique items are remaining on the 1st floor. No real rush even in holidays. Worth visiting if you have an interest on tradition Japanese items. Entrance fee is ¥800. Car park available.

Hidden treasure in Sakata! So thrilled I came across the Sanno Club while looking at area sightseeing places in our hotel. This gorgeous former fine dining establishment has been turned into a truly magical space. The woodwork and architecture throughout the building alone is worth a visit, but the former banquet hall is now this lovely place to see the handcrafted work of local artists, both current and historical. Highly recommended.

This place is magical! There is a cool history to it and the display of the kasafuku was stunning beyond words. The building is a beautiful example of old architecture that is so well preserved. The staff was super nice and sweet. Highly recommend a stop by while you are in Sakata.

My friends and I have who have all extensively traveled around Japan were very impressed with this building. The attention to detail of the design and craftsmanship of the building is a testament to how wealthy the family and area was! The second floor room filled with Yasafuku is absolutely stunning and magical. We all degree this is a very underrated site.

Probably one of if not the coolest thing we did on our trip. We got there right when it opened so it was so quiet and peaceful and the woman helped us and explained the meaning of everything upstairs. Then she even gave us a tour around the downstairs as well. The shop also has soooo many cool gifts for anyone. HIGHLY recommend a visit!!

Somaro Maiko Teahouse in Sakata offers a traditional Japanese experience with maiko geisha performances, green tea, and wagashi sweets. The historic building showcases intricate architecture, paintings, and doll galleries. Visitors can enjoy the mesmerizing maiko performances from different periods of Japan and then relax in the garden with a cup of tea. This cultural gem provides insight into Sakata's history as a vital port city and its unique development of Maiko culture through trade with Kyoto.
Fabulous experience. We purchased the lunch show tickets and we're served a beautiful bento box then treated to a brief performance. Afterward we wandered around the building, which was just lovely.

Well worth a visit. You can watch a Maiko (geisha) performance for a modest fee. Need to book in advance via the official website. The tour also includes a look into the past of the historic building, now operating as a Maiko school. Just remember not to take pictures of the Maikos without their explicit permission.

Somaro shows a small slice of Sakata’s deep history as one of Japan’s most important port cities. The Maiko culture originally developed through trade with Kyoto on the Kitamaebune ships, but it developed in its own unique way to bring you one of the best locations for a cultural experience in Japan.

Somaro is an incredible place to visit. For those interested in architecture, you can experience and see closely all the details of what was a high-class restaurant. The paintings and dolls galleries are great to see. The staff is very nice and helpful and the most mesmerizing part of Somaro are the Maiko and their perfomances, ranging from different periods of Japan. After the perfomance, you can enjoy a cup of tea next to the garden and appreciate the sound and nature. Truly, Somaro is a must visit if you are in Sakata, a city full of surprises!

Homma Museum, established in 1947, showcases a wide range of Japanese arts and crafts exhibitions featuring tea ceremonies. This museum is known for its rich collection of historical artifacts from the Shonai region, including original works by renowned haiku poet Matsuo Basho. However, it's the unique and exceptional traditional garden that sets it apart from other museums- a must-visit destination for nature lovers.
So impressed by the villa, garden and art collection! It's so relaxing to drink matcha and look out to the garden. I didn't want to leave!!! Homma clan is a great art collector. I was able to read all the descriptions in english using the QR code! Well done!

Went there for the Hina Doll Exhibition. The front office staff is friendly and helpful. You can request her for an English pamphlet but explanation in English is readily available by scanning barcode (via internet). I paid 450 yen (cost for university student, bring your student card), but adult entry is 1000 yen covering all parts. The museum consist of exhibition buiding, Japanese garden, and villa. From the main entrance you will enter the exhibition building first. It's full of art and doll collection from various period. I recommend not to go alone because the nuance is kinda... vintage and eerie. Note that the toilet is only here, so make sure to empty your bladder here before moving on to the other parts of the museum. The garden is serene, you can hear birds and moving tree branches house. You can also see the beautiful villa and blue pond filled with huge koi fish from the garden. To enter the villa, just follow the mark. You will be greeted by another friendly staff. When I went there, they also show the hina dolls arragements and the 傘福 (kasa fuku) native to Sakata. The hina dolls exhibition lasts till 6 April 2023. They also have umbrella service for free if it's raining, and you can enjoy tea+dessert in the villa at additional cost. You can also bring professional camera, because photo and video are allowed in every parts. I won't spill the most beautiful part because it has to be you who discover it😄

The Sakata ramen category is soy sauce ramen with wonton noodles, right? Leaving aside that, the soup of the Chinese noodles looks dark and spicy, as expected from its reputation, but the bitterness and harshness of the soy sauce is removed, and it is light and mellow. However, it has a strong fishy flavor. A perfect balance that doesn't get boring. The noodles are straight. The char siew is thin and spacious, but it's a lot. It seems to be a soup stock made from chicken or seafood, but it doesn't feel like it's overpowering and is an easy-to-drink soup. It goes well with medium-thin noodles. Is this the standard for Sakata ramen? It comes with chashu pork, menma, green onions, and wontons. Well, it's wonton noodles. The thin-skinned wontons are more melty than slippery and delicious. I'm hungry, but I don't feel well and don't want to eat heavy food... ꒰꒪꒫꒪⌯꒱ Pikon! Today I’m going to eat Tsuki-style quick noodles! I came to the store in such a state. When you take a sip of the soup, it's surprisingly light. The soup stock is simple and, to put it bluntly, ``thin'', but it's delicious. If my physical condition was normal, I might have taken it as a negative, but on the contrary, it was a good thing. It's good to have ramen like this. I would not recommend this restaurant to people who usually like strong flavors and feel that their tongue (taste buds) may be degenerating. Several of my acquaintances, including myself when I first moved to Sakata, criticized it as ``tasteless,'' and I can imagine a similar result. It's meaningless and I don't want it to get a weird reputation. Ah, that's right. My taste buds will recover, as was the case with me, so I recommend it to those who have recently become aware that they have become unable to perceive delicate flavors due to the umami inflation spiral and are considering tongue therapy. That's good, there are good aspects to both light and strong flavors, and you can feel ``delicious'' among a wide range of options. Nestled in a charming locale, Sawaguchi is a delightful dining destination that promises an unforgettable culinary experience. Whether you visit solo or with friends, the inviting tatami room and counter seating create a warm atmosphere perfect for enjoying your meal. Diners rave about the exquisite set meals available in the evenings, featuring an array of delectable dishes like fresh sashimi, crispy tempura, grilled fish, and comforting miso soup.
Maximum satisfaction lunch at a value price of 1650yen. Very tasty too.

The chawanmushi with strong soup stock and mozuku vinegar are both delicious and satisfying! Our impression of this restaurant in a port town is 5 stars. (Translated by Google) I visited on a weekday after 5 PM. I was alone and didn't have a reservation, but they seated me in the tatami room (there's a counter). I enjoyed my favorite dishes, including sashimi, rock oysters, and turban shells, while drinking beer and sake. I even had pork fillet cutlet, and the fried food was delicious too. While it was a bit pricey if you were eating everything by yourself, it was a great place because they serve set meals in the evenings. The service was also excellent. It was a late night snack, but there is also a set menu. This time I had the Sawaguchi set meal. For 1,650 yen, you'll be happy with the large selection of grilled fish, sashimi, and tempura. Also, the oysters I received as a recommendation were large and very delicious. I think this is a restaurant that has delicious seafood. The store staff are also very responsive. I enjoyed it. I would definitely like to use it again if I have the opportunity. (Translated by Google) 2024.1.6 I visited with five children in their 40s and 50s and their parents in their 70s who were returning home from Tokyo for a three-day weekend. The evening course was surprisingly cheap, starting from 3,500 yen, so I thought it would be nice to visit a restaurant like this once in a while. It seems that my friend's parents and Sawaguchi's family have been friends for a long time, and I had heard good things about them, so I made a reservation and visited for the first time in a while. My mother went to the restroom in Nakaza, and when she came out, an elderly female clerk nearby said, When I said hello, he didn't even say hello back and went into the bathroom with a disgusted look on his face. Perhaps he was holding back from using the restroom, but even if you take that into account, it seems like he's a better person than he was before he started serving customers with poor hospitality. It was disappointing to see the arrogance of a long-established store, which is common among the older store staff, but the young proprietress, Kyomi, and the female staff were friendly, so I could see the positive aspects of the younger staff. I hope that you will continue to make the most of your efforts in the future. I had told them in advance that I was allergic to shrimp, but it wasn't really a problem as I could just ignore the fact that shrimp came out. As for the other dishes, on the day I visited, there was flatfish, etc., so I think it was good value for money considering the reasonable price. The customer base was calm and it was a private room, which was good. I would choose another kappo restaurant that is more than twice the price that I usually go to. I think this is a good restaurant for those who think of it as a set meal restaurant rather than a Japanese restaurant.

"It seems like a long-established store and they have set meals. Well, it's normal!" I thought about that and put it off until later. It's a waste. I should have gone earlier. Tamasudare Falls, the largest waterfall in Yamagata at 61 meters, offers a spectacular sight. A short walk from the parking area leads to the falls, passing by a tori gate and gigantic trees. The atmosphere changes dramatically as you approach the falls, providing a cool respite even on hot days. Accessible and serene, it's an ideal spot for a visit. In summer, the falls offer refreshing relief and are easily reached from the parking lot.
Very nice and serene place, had the whole area to ourselves. There were tractors doing some minor construction work but one there was a pavement to the falls easily accessible even in winter, short walk from carpark

The tallest waterfall in this prefecture, it is a sight and also, not too busy! You might even have the waterfall to yourself. Check out the Kirin mum statue with the kid, that's pretty unique.

It is the largest waterfall in Yamagata (61 m). The waterfall looks really spectacular. Just walk 50 meter or so from the parking slot (there is a small shop in the parking area, selling coffee and local vegetables) and you will hear the waterfall. In another 100 meter you will see the tori gate and the gigantic trees. Pass by the tori gate and you will be with your waterfall. The atmosphere is suddenly so different from the parking lot. The place is cool even on a sunny hot day. You will feel like you have suddenly transferred to the dense forest. Sit on some big stone and enjoy the beauty of the waterfall. It will calm your heart and soul. These areas are all snow in winter. So please take special care if you are going somewhere in between November-April.

Quite special and easy to access. I basically had the place to myself in early April. The melting snow the refreshing myst, the purifying vibes all around. I’m really glad I made the trip here and was fortunate that it wasn’t raining or snowing but I got wet enough standing in front of the falls but it didn’t matter anyway. Maybe I should’ve brought that new rain poncho I bought.

Mountains
Mount Chōkai is a massive active volcano located at the prefectural border of Yamagata and Akita. It offers various hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and holds a history of spiritual activities. The area features unique rock formations shaped like candles and mammoths due to submarine volcano activity and wave erosion.
I had a chance to hike Mt. Chokai on August 12th. It was one of the best hiking I have ever had. There are many trails but the most popular one is the Hokodate trail. I arrived here at around 8:30 and it was packed already. Not only hikers but also nature lovers and campers were there to enjoy the spectacular scenery. The weather was awesome. You can take a pleasure of seeing Nihon kai (Japan Sea) after a beautiful green nature. Hokodate has restaurants, shops, information center, bathrooms, vending machines, observation deck etc. pretty much everything you will need. The trail starts across the road behind the rest house. Don’t forget to fill out the hiking form for safety. The course stars very smooth and nice path. Then a well maintained road with lots of big rocks comes. The rocks are flatted and placed well on the way. There is an observation deck after 5-10 min but no need to wast time here since there are other places on the way. After an hour you cross the intersection of two small mountains. This place had a great view with lots of flowers and snow on top of the mountains. After a short descending you will climb a steep section. This part might be a bit challenging but you will forgot everything once you reach the top of this section. There is a hut here. Good place for a break. I was sitting and watching the scenery in the front section but realized that the Chokai lake can be seen behind section. So just go around the hut and enjoy the Chikai Lake’s amazing scenery. Some people return from this point after having a walk around the lake. If you like to make the summit than just keep going by following the signs behind the hut. The rocks in this sections are more random which makes it a bit harder to walk. I am sure you will stop time to time to take photo of both Chokai-ko and the mountains on the other side. After about 20 min you will see a descending section follows with another peak. It was my first time hiking here so I thought this is the peak of Mt. Chokai. Actually it is just half way through. However the scenery and path were breathtaking. Before starting to ascend this peak you will see another path joins from the right side. This is the one coming from the waterfalls trail ( Ichinotaki, ninotaki ). From this point on the path becomes narrower and challenging. Once you reach the peak of this section you will see a small sitting area where you can have a short break. Soon you will see another sign at the fork. The right one goes through 3 different mountain peaks before the Chokai’s summit. Seemed too challenging. The left one goes to the hut near to the summit. I went from the left one. You can go from left and come back from the right one. The left section turns more challenging and steeper. You descend first and climb up to through rocky path. The first section is very and very slippery. Take your time, don’t rush. It was very crowded and I had to wait people in-front of me. You can see the summit from this point but it is not a direct path. You will go behind the mountain. You will see the signs every 15-30 min. It took me more the an hour to reach the summit from this point. On the way you will see some people on the top of the mountains on your right side. This is the other path goes to the summit. Once I saw the hut I had relief to reach up to here. The hut is big. There is a restaurant, a museum, a temple, bathrooms etc. You can buy drinks or have a cup of noodles. However this is not the peak yet. On your left you will see the big scary rocks. Just follow the white arrows. Don’t look back, just keep going. It is normally a 30 min climbing the peak. The peak is very small. Just take a photo with the sign and respect other people. This is the Shinzan peak 2136m (Mt. Chokai) Although you can descend from the same path there is another path on the other section to go back to the hut. Alternatively you can follow the path that goes to the peak of the other mountains to reach the starting point.

Snow-free season is good, but snow-covered season is great. The slopes of the vast snowfall of the sunny day of May are hot. The new mountain, which is bordered by the remaining snow, is even more rough. You can go down and slide freely on a large snow surface by drawing a spur. It is a fun unique to skiing. However, you have to be careful enough to take the course after Ohama hut. If you make a mistake in one of the ridges, you will go down in the wrong direction. Check the course you have climbed and then slide down.

Nestled along the stunning coastline of Sakata, Jūroku Rakan Iwa is a remarkable monument that pays tribute to local fishermen. This captivating site features 22 intricately carved busts of Buddhist monks, created by a 19th-century monk as a memorial for shipwrecked souls and to ensure safe maritime journeys. The backdrop includes the breathtaking Mount Chokai, with its snow-capped peak adding to the area's natural beauty.
The feeling of finding the statue one by one then completing them was really great experience. The blue sky and the sound of the waves are great combination with the stones. In the upper side, there is a sunset point, you can see the sunset there. So it's recomended to visit when the wheather is sunny. If you want to go with public transportation, you can take the train to Fukura Station. It is the nearest station, then you can continue to walk.

If you are in the area, worth stopping off to see. But not worth going out of your way to see. Beaches have plenty of modern flotsam. Which is actually the purpose of the carvings, to think of those lost at sea. Some more scenic views a little further to the north.

Kaikoji Temple is a unique and sacred place where the dead bodies of Buddhist monks are considered to represent living Buddhas. The temple houses six sokushinbutsu (mummies), with two enshrined in the sokubutsu-do hall. These mummies, including those of Tadashi Kaijin and Enmei Kaijin, underwent rigorous training for 1,000 days after fasting to death as an act of prayer during calamities.

(Translated by Google) Shakozan Kaikoji Temple is a Shingon sect temple dedicated to the Taizokai Dainichi Nyorai (Vairocana Buddha). The temple was founded by Kobo Daishi Kukai during the Heian period, approximately 1,200 years ago. Later, Shinzen Shonin enshrined Yudono-san Daigongen (Taikaku Nyorai), and was rebuilt by Chukai and Tetsumonkai as a branch temple of Yudono-san Churen-ji Temple, and continues to operate to this day. Since the Edo period, the temple has supported the prayers of people as a base for faith in Yudono-san, one of the Three Mountains of Dewa, and continues to pass on the Buddhist rituals of Yudono-san today. The fireproof sokubutsu hall on the temple grounds houses the only two sokushinbutsu monks in Japan. One was dedicated to Chukai, who entered nirvana in 1755, and the other to Enmyokai, who entered nirvana in 1822. The main hall of Kaikoji Temple is a Gongen-style building, a single-story wooden structure befitting an ancient temple that was rebuilt by the priest Tetsumon during the Bunka era (1804-1818). The exterior walls are made of real wood and finished with white plaster, and the carvings on the veranda are intricately detailed. The ingredients in each dish are fresh, delicious, and beautiful. The owner is vibrant and has a passion for food and especially sashimi. If you love tuna, this is a must-try!

There are a lot of selection of foods, especially seafoods. The dining room are available inside and outside. In the outside, you can directly see the port. Such a good experience to enjoy the food with the port view. It will be really crowded during lunch time so it will be difficult to find a place to dine in. The place is cozy and the toilet is clean. Good place to visit.

(Translated by Google) Available before noon on weekdays. It is shaped like a food court and seems to have 6 stores. However, the only restaurants that seem lively are "Senkatsukuide!" and "Ika Koi Shokudo", which I used this time, and the others seem to be busy. Another store was temporarily closed. The popular stores are facing each other in the center, so it's crowded there, and the edges are quiet. So, the most important thing is that the taste of ``Senkatsukuide!'' was ``average.'' I went for the most luxurious seafood bowl, ``Oashio'', but the taste was not that different from my hometown in Saitama. The price is overwhelmingly cheap at 1500 yen, so I guess it's a good deal in a sense. Even though it was cheap, I should have tried ``Ika Koi Shokudo'' as well. However, this restaurant is not closed on Wednesdays, so you can enjoy a variety of local seafood dishes even on Wednesdays. Since it's in a food court format, you can enjoy B-class gourmet food at a low price. (Translated by Google) My kids really wanted to eat there, so we had a food court lunch at Ikakoi Shokudo and Senkatsu Kuide!!, which seem to be sure to be a hit. At Ikakoi, if you order a set meal, you'll get all-you-can-eat soft-boiled egg and salted squid. The squid was crunchy, chewy, and delicious. This food court's business model seems to be a condensed version of Tsukiji's food court, but even before lunchtime on a Tuesday, there was a steady stream of people ordering food in front of the store. It seems to attract not only market customers but also local residents, and I think it's a sustainable business. Several crane ships were in Sakata Port, and construction was underway, and wind power generation was also churning. While it was unclear whether this was construction, maintenance, or new development, what's clear is that it's a "living port." It's clear that it was a thriving port, as evidenced by the recent record of double the catch of last year. I hope that the remnants of this once-thriving port, fueled by Kitamae ships, will be cherished and preserved for the future. An older, cozy izakaya, this place has a large selection of food and Japanese sake for you to enjoy, with prices that range from quite cheap to generally reasonable. One thing this shop does differently than most other places I've been is that if you're dining at the counter, they have several menu items available on display that require only a bit of reheating/finishing. The motsu from my picture is one such item. The gyoza is also some of the best I've had in Tohoku, though it could use a little more garlic for my taste.

(Translated by Google) All of the food is delicious, and they have a good selection of Japanese sake. The only sashimi available is mackerel and squid sashimi, and the freshness is average, so there's no need to order it, but on the other hand, the seasoning of the side dishes is quite good. Since there were a lot of people there, it was placed in a small raised area in the back, but unless you call out loud, you will be left alone. Originally, it was a restaurant where locals would come alone on a daily basis and drink at the counter, and there was no commercial interest. I think this is a restaurant that has different tastes for travelers. Even if you eat the lean meat alone, it is not dry. The noodles are delicious. The eggs are jelly-filled and seasoned. 1050 yuan. I asked the chef to reduce the amount of noodles. (Translated by Google) I visited again in the midst of Golden Week. As a result, the inside of the store was a bit crowded, and although they were usually very polite in guiding people to their seats and accepting meal tickets, the customer service was a bit sloppy today, perhaps because of my imagination. However, the taste is top notch as always. I've been frustrated not being able to visit again since they closed on Sundays, but today I went back for the first time in about a year. This time I ordered Ajitama Ramen + Lunch Rice, but the price of Lunch Rice had increased by ¥10. However, they added mayonnaise, which wasn't available when it was ¥100, so I felt that it was more than just a price increase. I would like to visit again, but it's too bad that it's closed on Sundays. It would be a great help if you could blame me and reopen the business on Sunday, even if it's only once a month. I visited again for the first time in about 2 years. After all, Sunday regular holidays are too painful. As someone who can only take Sundays off due to my job, it's very fatal for me, so to be honest, I sincerely hope that they return to the business structure they had when they first opened. This time, I ordered "Zenzen Ramen" ¥1550. It's a fairly expensive menu, but I decided to go for it to relieve the stress that comes only once in a while. Despite the name, the toppings were quite voluminous, and I ended up running out of noodles with about half of the toppings left, but since this is a ramen shop with high quality and the flavors I like, I wasn't too concerned about it. What I was more concerned about was the customer service attitude. Previously, I had the impression that the store was more lively and staff members cooperated by talking to each other, but today there was a somewhat chaotic atmosphere, and in the end, I was working on my smartphone at the edge of the kitchen. I witnessed the clerk start. Honestly, I couldn't help but feel that the level of customer service had steadily deteriorated since I hadn't visited again for a while. Therefore, I gave it one minus. (Translated by Google) P.S.: I had the limited edition Rich Shrimp Miso Ramen. I have the shrimp miso every year, but this year it has been further improved and is more delicious. Personally, I try not to drink the entire ramen soup for health reasons, but it was so delicious that I drank it all up. I would like to add that everyone has different preferences when it comes to ramen. This ramen is characterized by its pure white soup and homemade noodles. It is rich and thick and very different from the typical Sakata ramen, but the balance between the soup and noodles is good, the seasoned egg is well made, and it is delicious. The side of the char siu rice is also quite high quality. It has been featured on local ramen programs many times and has become a popular restaurant. When it first opened, there were more menu items, and I was hooked on the "rich salt" that was once available. Thanks to this, although there are many other famous ramen restaurants in Sakata, I only go to this one. Although the menu has been reduced since the restaurant first opened, there is always a "limited noodle" menu, which changes irregularly every January or February. These limited noodles are tricky. Personally, some of them are better than the original Ajitama Ramen. The miso and shrimp varieties, which are only available in winter, and the spicy noodles that were available until recently were all excellent curry ramen. I would love to see these on the regular menu. All of them are based on Shinyama's delicious white soup, so the taste is guaranteed. I am fascinated by the potential and spirit of challenge of this restaurant, which is challenging itself with various types of ramen while maintaining the taste of the main soup.

(Translated by Google) I visited for the first time for dinner. The restaurant is mainly counter-style. The soup is a combination of one animal-based and one fish-based soup? It's delicious while you're eating it, but the taste of the fish powder lingers, so it's a love-it-or-hate-it restaurant. The noodles seem to be medium-thick and straight, to my taste. They're slightly firm. The pork slices are hard, as they're made from simmered lean meat... personally I don't like them. The boiled egg is well-seasoned and has a nice creamy texture, but is too salty on its own. Overall, I think this is a restaurant that people will either love or hate.
