Hirizo Beach, located near Tokyo, is a popular spot for snorkeling and observing vibrant marine life. Accessible by a short boat ride, the beach boasts crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. However, it can get crowded during peak season. Visitors recommend arriving early to secure parking and space on the boats. The rocky beach offers excellent visibility for observing various coral fishes but may require bringing your own chairs or air mats due to limited sandy areas.
Superb... Excellent snorkling site outside Okinawa. During peak season this tiny beach will be horrible crowded but at the end of season (September) this tiny beach almost like private beach. Rocky beach has Crystal visibility, plenty various of coral fishes. Marine boot is mandatory, except rock and other sharp objects the beach also has many poisonous Stone fish. Absolutely recommend

The snorkeling area is nice as it's an enclosed area surrounded mostly by rocks. You need to get quite a bit out to be deep enough to swim. You will definitely need some shoes for the water as there's sea urchins and sharp rocks that I would not suggest walking barefoot on. Once you're further out though, the water and marine life is really nice. Biggest negative is how crowded it is and having to arrive super early in the morning for parking. Most cars started waiting as early as 3am to get a parking spot. Then there's a lot of waiting until the boats start running at 8am with a huge queue of people waiting to board it. After arriving at the beach, everyone sets up their massive tents so it's a bit of a pain to walk and get around the rocks.
Bryan C — Google review
Hirizo beach is a very nice “beach”, just made out of only rocks everywhere, very small and so easily crowded. The view is very nice and snorkeling activity is ok, but too many staffs yelling at you not to swim here or there . Include also 2000¥ boat trip for one person and 2 min transportation to the beach.
Bonjour T — Google review
Probably the best spot for snorkeling around Kanto area. However, you need to get to the port really early like 5am to get a parking lot and put your stuff to secure your spot in a line for a boat. Also, there will be so many people in a small area. A sand area is very limited. Other space is stones and rocks. You must take your chairs and/or air mat. Japanese people like to stay in tents so they’ll block your view.
Hiroki I — Google review
That's incredible that you can find such a tropical place so relatively close to Tokyo. Arrived at Nakagi Port you can purchase for 1500 yen (as of 2018) a return transfer ticket, and boats are linking the bay every 5 minutes. However, beware the crowd of midsummer weekends. If possible go a little off season (like in mid September) and on a weekday.
Davide C — Google review
Secluded little beach with a small cove for snorkeling. Lots of fish and coral. The beach is very small and can get crowded. It's made of rocks so foot protection is a necessity! Unless you bring folding chairs don't expect to lounge comfortably either. There are no facilities but the boat to the harbour goes every 10 minutes orso. Recommended if you're in the area and a little out of season!

Izu, shizuoka is really a good location during burning summer, crystal clear water and many more locations which will amaze you, there is a Cape aiai famous location for taking pair photos, sea and mountains of beautiful colours.
Beyond B — Google review
One of the best area for snorkeling in Kanno area.. There are very clear water and tropical fishes. Boat access only from Nakagi. Boat fee is 1500yen/person, parking 1000yen/vehicle. Once you paid boat fee, You can take boat many times for toilet, food... Because beach don't have anything. It takes 5min from Port to beach.

Shimoda Underwater Aquarium, also known as the Shimoda Floating Aquarium, is a unique sightseeing spot in Shimoda City. It stands out for its distinctive floating structure on the water. Visitors can enjoy dolphin shows and penguin feeding while observing marine life from an underwater viewing deck. The aquarium's main attraction is the Aquadome Perry, a large cylindrical tank that replicates the Izu Sea environment.
If you're planning on coming here, try to reserve some of the dolphin show add-ons. They're only available by advance reservation, and up-close interaction with the dolphins is pretty much the main selling point of this aquarium, especially if you have children. This facility is a bit small, very old, and not the best maintained, but it has a very smart construction and is well-designed for the dolphin shows, which are clearly the main attraction for the aquarium. There are shows roughly twice an hour. The dolphin shows (Wonder Ocean) are definitely the main event, but all of the other shows are worth seeing as well. It takes around two hours to catch everything. It's not the most well-kept or modern aquarium but the animals are extremely well-trained and some of the tricks they do are genuinely impressive. If you're already in the area, this is worth the money.
Edwin L — Google review
Pretty nice attraction. It’s a small setting but in a gorgeous spot inside of a natural alcove. We were lucky to visit during off season. Still, there were plenty of opportunities for up close encounters with the lovely marine animals who all seem very well cared for and protected. An English guide (brochure) is provided. All shows are in Japanese only, but animal expression requires no translation! The animals here are happy and made us happy.
Jesse C — Google review
It's okay. It needs a serious cash injection to bring it up to more modern standards. There is a lot of rust on the floating walkways. It's a bit on the smaller side. I think you could spend about 3 to 4 hours there max but anything more than that and you really have to be a sea animal lover. The dolphin and sea lion shows are fun but a bit short. The penguin march was a bit overrated a lot of people gathered around to watch it but let's face it penguins our penguins. If you have young kids I think they will enjoy this park but if you're just a couple of adults I think you should go elsewhere.
Daniel W — Google review
A nice regional aquarium famous for its dolphin show, the show lasts about 10 minutes you can pay more for premium seating in the water! It's not huge but decent for Japan standards.
Benjamin Z — Google review
Small aquarium, the dolphin show was great, there are special places to watch, you need to book in advance. And there is also the opportunity to swim with dolphins, you also need to book in advance. I recommend it, you can also have lunch here and have a good time!
Alesya — Google review
Great small aquarium with plenty of free shows. Go in the morning and they line up back to back nicely. Even if you don't speak Japanese the enthusiasm from the trainers and animals is a joy to experience. Even the 3 dolphins had a clear preference for different tricks (spins, flips, posing) - very cute.
Thomas O — Google review
Awful place that should not be open at all, they keep animals in the worse conditions and have no conservation purpose. PLEASE DO NOT COME TO PLACES LIKE. It's so sad. We came across the place while on a walk and saw the dolphins in small enclosure and two turtles by the entrance in a tank as big as my bathtub. SHAME ON YOU!
AGUSTIN L — Google review
Two adult turtles going around in a circle in a tile tub. Just sad. This alone made me not want to enter. They need more space and to be in proper environment. This felt like I was in North Korea and not Japan.

Togai Beach, located near the stunning Irozaki Port in Minamiizu Town, is a hidden gem that promises an unforgettable experience. A short 25-minute pleasure cruise from the port offers breathtaking views of Cape Irozaki's rugged coastline and its iconic lighthouse. The beach itself features crystal-clear waters where you can spot vibrant marine life like puffer fish while strolling along the scenic promenade.
Wonderful beach looks like private after 5 PM. Reach before 3:30 PM to get into boat to reach Hirizo Beach. Unforgetable trip.
Muthu V — Google review
It's a good beach with sable rocks. The water is relatively clear and quite clean. I would recommend this to families that are exploring the area! If the boats are not working for Hirizo, this beach is a perfect substitute. For camping I recommend the one in Iruma beach, just 10 min away by car.

The picturesque cove beach in a secluded location boasts a sandy and rocky shoreline, encircled by majestic mountains and teeming with marine life. The beach exudes beauty, tranquility, and serenity. While the sand may not be entirely pure white, it is still of satisfactory quality - soft enough to provide comfort. The gentle waves during vacation time rarely exceed 2 feet in height.
It's a lovely beach, very quiet and spacious, great snorkeling - lots of fish to see 🐠🌊🏖️ Also, very conveniently, there are coin lockers by the toilets! They take 300¥ and means you can happily swim and snorkel without worrying about leaving your valuables on the shore.
Darren M — Google review
A very nice beach for surfers and to chill. At the time we went it was spring, so a lot of algae was mixed with the sand. The cliffs are also beautiful together with the beach and sea.
Ryusei H — Google review
The Benzaiten Cape (弁財天岬) forms a natural barrier to large waves coming into the cove during a storm surge or typhoon, which has resulted in a cove that has a lovely beige-sand beach. Access to this cove is easiest if you can drive, which is approximately a 3-hour 30-minute drive from Tokyo. The cove is also accessible from Izukyo-Shimoda Station from where you can take a 45-minute bus ride and then take a 26-minute walk from the nearest bus stop. Despite the fishing industry working offshore of this beach, the beach itself and the waters are quite clean and free of any debris from the fishermen (or most any non-organic debris). Not all Japanese beaches are as nice, but I was impressed with how this particular community seems to have been able to strike a balance with the needs of industry, recreation, and tourism. Parking is available for free if you arrive early, public restrooms are available, and the beach was very nice on a par with Shirahama Beach. Compared to beaches in the Shonan area, Yumigahama Cove beach is much nicer! Check out the videos of Yumigahama Cove at the @pix4japan YouTube channel.

A very relaxing beach and far less crowded than Shirahama. It's beautiful in the afternoon abd becomes tranquil at sunset. Nothing to dislike.

Amazing beach. The sand was super soft and the water nice and warm. A lot less crowded compared to many other beaches, but is significantly harder to get to as you either need to drive to take a bus from the closest station at Shimoda.

Irozaki Cape is located at the southern end of the Izu Peninsula and boasts a rugged promontory adorned with a Shinto shrine and lighthouse. The area offers breathtaking views and the calming sound of crashing waves. Accessible by bus from Izukyu Shimoda station, visitors can purchase a 2-day Shimoda Irozaki bus pass for easy transportation to various points of interest along the way, including beautiful beaches.
Breathtaking view of the ocean. Spent 30 mins here which is enough for the lighthouse and cape view unless you’re an influencer maybe an hour. Didn’t pay to be on the rock but it’s alright as the views are still amazing

There is a large paid parking lot - cost about 500 yen to stop there. 10 min walk to the lighthouse and shrine. There is a small cafe, gift shop and eating area at the entrance.
S Z — Google review
Good place for those who enjoy walking near the cliff or seeing the ocean scenery from the lighthouse. The place is open from 9am - 4pm. You will also find the 1st shrine build at cliff since 701Ad and the 2nd shrine that was build in 1903. You may get a charm from the shrine from 300yen onwards. The wind is pretty strong at the cliff so do take care while walking around it. The welcome centre have a cafeteria whine serve lunch and snack and a gift shop for you to buy souvenir from the park. You may travel to this location by purchasing a tokai bus pass from the tokai bus terminal opposite Izu shimoda train station.

There is a big welcome center next to the parking lot with food and drink options (seemed to be newly built). The edges at the cape are quite steep, so be careful. However I found the views from nearby Yusuga Park more impressive. Also note as of May 2024 closing time was already 16:00.

Fantastic place. Worth visiting as the view from the southern most top of Izu peninsula is just amazing. The ocean in front of you, the waves crashing down on the rocks, beautifully colored water, the high wind / breeze, cute little lighthouse-,can’t go up though, the shrine at the cliff end and at the tip - it is absolutely fantastic. Parking lot has many spots available (500 JPY). We saw a bus there as well but not sure about its frequency. There is a souvenir shop, a small restaurant with select few dishes, a few tables and chairs to settle down, toilets etc - all of which seems like pretty new, so sparklingly clean. The staff was standing right at the front gate of the small building (adjacent to parking spot) and graciously offered free umbrellas to carry till the end of Iro cape as it was drizzling a little bit. The hike is just 10 mins simple walk from parking spot. Kids can easily go. Fun fact: As is the practice with many Shinto shrines, the Iro shrine also has a mirror installed where one would keep deity. The understanding being that “A shrine’s mirror on an alter is often angled for the effect that the spirit of the kami is reflected within the person looking in the mirror.”

This traditional Japanese repast showcases a flawlessly cooked portion of Kinmedai, a prized fish renowned for its subtle taste and tender flesh.
we walked all the way from yumigahama beach to Okada restaurant and it was worth the 20-min walk. we thought we needed google translate again for the menu but they were ready to provide us with an english menu. (yay!) there were only 2 of us but we ordered 3 sets because everything looked good. and it was. the sashimi was fresh. the tempura was tasty. the pork had a unique zing to it. and all the sides were delicious.

My review is based upon the restaurant being out of lobster. My family order the tempura thinking that the seafood would not be breaded, however it was. Not a great meal, but very authentic. I would go back and try it again if they had the lobster meal

It's a common type of restaurant in the site seeing area. Service and food being not great but ok level, and bit pricy as most tourists would expect. I tried the kaisen-don. Miso soup cup and rice bowl had seaweed and rice sticking outside the dish. 1 piece of pumpkin and bit of pickles were on sides. As for the taste, nothing surprising but I wish the rice was a sushi rice. I'm still thankful that they are open throughout the year, not just the on-season. Be sure to carry a cash and not a card.

Nestled in the serene fields of Minamiizu, Tsukasa-an is a delightful stop for travelers heading back to Tokyo from Izu. This charming eatery boasts a tranquil atmosphere with its cozy interior featuring a long communal table and intimate seating arrangements for small groups. A fantastic find on the way back to tokyo from Izu. With a setting among the fields, the interior ambience is super calm. They have 1 long table(8 people), and 3 tables for seating 2-4 people. There is a tatami room as well with a couple of table to sit down in typical japanese way. Staff is super nice and food was amazing. Seafood restaurant
地魚料理 信 is a local izakaya in Minamiizu that offers fresh and delicious seafood dishes. The restaurant provides generous portions of fish served with vinegared rice, ensuring a delightful dining experience. Customers appreciate the quality of the food, which includes a variety of fish such as tuna, yellowtail, amberjack, himedai Mutsu, gurnard, striped jack, and flounder.
Kamayaki was very delicious!

when I left the restaurant I was hungrier than when I entered even though I paid for an expensive dinner in my opinion but the thing that bothered me the most was that I had to go looking for cash because they didn't take credit cards to pay

What looked promising (nice new building, wide parking and an outside deck) proved rather disappointing. Drab interior but more importantly, really basic (borderline poor) food, both in terms of taste and presentation. The famous Shimoda Kinmedai (fish) was not only tiny but totally overpriced. The place might be good for a few beers and nibbles, but I cannot recommend it for dinner. There are far better places both around as well as in Shimoda for local seafood.

High price and small portions for what was just pretty ordinary Japanese food.

There is a traditional inn next door, so if you stay with breakfast included, you might have dinner here as there don't seem to be any restaurants nearby. It looks new so the inside is clean. (Translated by Google) [Highly Recommended Restaurant in Izu] This restaurant deserves six stars. My most recommended restaurant in Izu. Incredibly fresh, delicious, and not stingy. [Updated 2025/07] The seafood bowl is 2,000 yen. Still, the variety and portion of fresh fish is generous, so it's good value for money. For some reason, it was empty. It was empty. (Maybe it was just a coincidence?) There was no explanation of the fish in the seafood bowl... The taste wasn't bad, but what happened? As one of my favorite restaurants, I hope it maintains its popularity. [Updated 2024/09] I went again. It's as delicious as ever. <Update> I like it so much that I've been there many times. Every time, it's a seafood bowl. I used to rate it 5 if it was good and 4 or 3 if it was bad, but with restaurants like this, I have to lower the other ratings to make it even. A seafood bowl at 1,700 yen isn't cheap, but the freshness and the amount of fish fillets far exceed the price. I feel like the quality of the food is even reflected in the miso soup. The wakame seaweed has a strong ocean scent. Even in Izu, there are sometimes disappointing restaurants, but this one is a real hit.

Hotel
Hotel Kawachiya is a charming and straightforward accommodation that offers guests a delightful experience with its unique features. Nestled along the picturesque Aono River, it provides stunning views of cherry blossoms right from your room, making it an ideal spot for nature lovers. Guests can indulge in the hotel's communal bathhouses, which boast natural hot spring water rich in sodium and calcium—perfect for relaxation after a day of exploring.
(Translated by Google) The customer service, location, hot springs, everything was great! ! The customer service was great and I had a great time for 2 days ☺️ The hot springs were so effective that the cut I made on my finger the day before was healed! 💦Your skin will also be smooth✨ The natural hot spring water is amazing! Is the hot spring flowing directly from the source a small bathtub? I think there are many places like this, but this inn is quite spacious and I was surprised! ! The indoor bath also has free flowing water, which is quite luxurious! ! The location was also very good for me. We can pick you up from the station, A fan shop famous for its melon parfait, or a direct sales store selling agricultural products? It was fun to be able to walk there. Above all, Kawazu cherry blossoms are so close that I would like to visit again at that time! The room was very elegant and nice, but there was a large ventilation hole above the bath that was in contact with the garden, so I thought there might be a lot of insects in the summer, so I gave it a -1. However, I could see that the rooms were carefully cleaned, and each room had an air conditioner so I could freely adjust the temperature and stay comfortable. I don't know about the food because I stayed without meals, but the tea and sweets left in the room were delicious, and my friend who was staying with me bought some as souvenirs 😋 It was a fun trip thanks to this hostel. thank you very much! (Translated by Google) It's a great inn that makes you realize that this is the real Japanese hot spring, being rugged, simple, and not overly flashy. It's not suitable for those who want to look great with extravagant boat-shaped platters, spiny lobster, abalone, etc. *You can order luxurious ingredients as an option, but There's nothing extraneous, it's just plain, simple, and easy to understand. The bath is also the best, with water directly from the source. The spring quality, temperature, cleanliness, etc. are all excellent. The rooms are simple and beautiful Japanese-style rooms. However, there is a mattress under the futon, the air conditioner is the latest model, and the sink has hot water automatically, so you can feel the hospitality and attention to detail. The food is also of course great. They offer a variety of ingredients, mainly extremely fresh sashimi and golden-eyed snapper. The only thing that's missing is... What I thought was that the photo on the website for the "Kawachiya Kaiseki" plan showed the boiled golden-eyed snapper as a whole fish, but what actually came out was just a single fillet, the kind you'd get in a set meal. It was disappointing, as I had high hopes for it. Also, there was no tempura in the set menu, so it might be a little disappointing for men or those who want to eat their fill. With the exception of one person, the service was excellent and everyone was always attentive, which I appreciated. When I checked out, I had a chance to chat with the landlady, and she bowed politely and saw me off until I was out of sight, which I was touched by. It looks like the hotel will be fully booked during the cherry blossom viewing season, but I'll do my best to make a reservation. I'll definitely visit this famous inn again.

This was my second time diving at Mikomoto to see the hammerhead sharks. Conditions were rough this time, with strong winds and 8–10 ft swells, so coming back to Hotel Kawachiya felt like heaven. Our room was huge, in traditional tatami style, with two tables—one for meals and another by the sliding doors facing the tranquil rock garden. Everything was spotlessly clean and the staff were genuinely friendly. I also loved the onsen, which Minamiizu is famous for, ideal for relaxation after a long day at sea. I usually go before sleeping. The free shuttle to and from the train station was really convenient. It’s also a pleasant 15–20 minute walk along the river to get into town. Highly recommended for anyone wanting an authentic, relaxing stay in Minamiizu!

The facilities in the hotel were of a very high standard and felt like a higher-grade hotel. The hot springs were fed directly from the source, so the temperature of the water was just right and I was able to relax. (Translated by Google) This inn accepts online reservations, but its website lists two optional Hirizohama snorkel packages. For some reason, these options are only available over the phone, and they charged me for the more expensive Hirizohama package on the day. Even when I said I'd booked the cheaper option, they insisted that "I said it, I didn't say it," and charged me in a very aggressive manner. The price, which includes transportation, ferry fare, lunch, and snorkeling instruction, is 15,400 yen. Even though this option is as expensive as the accommodation fee, their strategy seems to be to not send me a confirmation email or any other evidence after receiving my phone reservation. I managed to negotiate down to the cheaper price of 8,800 yen, but they asked me to buy the bento boxes, which I reluctantly paid. They were supposedly 700 yen each, but they never brought the bento boxes I paid for. When I complained, they started blaming Nakagi Marine Center for the bento delivery. Negotiating a refund for the bento that never arrived required tough negotiations with a 55-year-old customer who claims to be the young proprietress of Kawachiya and a woman who is unaware of the rules of casual customer service, and where "he said, she said" arguments won't work. When I called to make a reservation, the woman who answered the phone was only able to give me an unclear response, and only replied when she called back that she had received the reservation, but if I had emailed the reservation details there would have been no problem, so I wonder if this is how they do it? What should have been a fun summer holiday with my kids has been ruined. As we were leaving, the 55-year-old woman who claims to be the young proprietress and is unaware of the rules of casual customer service said to me, "But when you came in you asked if you were here for snorkeling, right?" and when I told her that "he said, she said" arguments wouldn't work she reiterated, "I did," which was hilarious. The wording on the website is also confusing so I think they should change it to avoid any problems, but if that was their intention it was a great success. (Translated by Google) While my wife was bathing in the women's bath, a male employee came in and saw her naked. This was before COVID-19, but it served as our honeymoon with my wife. My wife liked it so much that we've returned a second time. As I mentioned at the beginning, he peeped at my wife while she was bathing. Afterwards, there was no apology whatsoever, and when my wife casually mentioned it to the employee, he just replied with a "huh." Later, when the landlady brought our food at dinnertime, she said, "It seems an employee caused you trouble," with a bit of a sulky look, but with that attitude, I couldn't take it as an apology. After that, we checked out as if nothing had happened, and it would have been different if she had apologized again, but nothing happened. First of all, it's easy to tell if someone is bathing with just a little checking, so isn't the fact that a male employee came in without checking considered peeping? If it is peeping, it is a crime, and my wife, who was in her twenties at the time, suffered for years because we didn't receive a proper apology. I thought it was a good inn until then, so I'm really disappointed. I will never go there again. Female guests should be very careful.
