Points of Interest & Landmarks
Oshino Hakkai is a picturesque village located in Oshino Village, Yamanashi Prefecture, between Yamanaka Lake and Kawaguchi Lake. The village features eight ponds known as the "eight seas of Nunye," which are fed by melted snow water from Mount Fuji. This natural filtration process results in cool and pure spring water that has been revered for over 1,200 years.
This area seems very magical and surreal. The traditional houses are well preserved and nicely maintained. The clear water in those ponds and creek are very calming. It is a very popular tourist destination so there are many loud and annoying tourists as well.
World E — Google review
A very special indeed museum village which is an UNESCO World Heritage site. The village has 8 ponds which are considered sacred to the pilgrims who go to visit Fujisan. On a perfect day you can see the best views of Mount Fuji from the village. There is no entrance fee to visit the ponds and the village. Also a great Market is at the entrance to the village on the right side. Against a fee of 300 Yen we visited also the Hannokibayashi Folklore Museum. I personally recommend 2 hours for the visit. If you are coming by car a lot of parking spaces are near the entrance ( 200 - 300 meters by foot ). On the road from the parking spots to the main village entrance are a lot of tasty foos stalls. We ate some tasty fried baby octopuses, some Wagyu Skewers and some super tasty donuts. Jump over if you are in the region. It worth it.
Robert R — Google review
This place was beautiful and amazing to visit and experience. Even though it was a cloudy day, the spring waters were clear and beautiful. This place stays crowded, but you can escape that. Many places to try snacks and foods. The souvenir shops had a lot of good items. You can purchase fruits and many local foods. Their are walkable areas to enjoy some quietness. If you can book a group tour, it's better.
Natasha F — Google review
Beautiful place but very crowded with tourists. It’s better to visit early morning. Very comfortable to walk with your pet there. There is souvenir shop and food seller, I’ll recommend to try their mugwort rice cake and japanese peach tea.
Diva A — Google review
Very cute village and lots of vendors. However, some Chinese tourists were acting absolutely crazy over the water fountain to taste the spring water. They brought 5L water bottles to fill up the water and did not follow the line as they didn’t want to wait their turn. In that sense, the experience was terrible but nothing against the village. It’s quaint and beautiful.
Shiona D — Google review
Oshino Hakkai is definitely worth a visit! A beautiful traditional village with charming old houses, delicious local snacks, and crystal-clear mountain spring water you can drink. From here you also get stunning views of Mount Fuji, which makes the place even more special. A peaceful atmosphere combined with history and nature – truly a must-see when in the Fuji area.
Ricardo S — Google review
★★★★★ Oshino Hakkai is a peaceful and picturesque village with crystal-clear spring water and stunning views of Mount Fuji. 🏞️✨ Each pond is so pure that you can see every stone and fish at the bottom. The surrounding traditional houses, waterwheels, and small shops selling local snacks make it feel like stepping back in time. A perfect spot for photography, relaxing walks, and enjoying Japan’s natural beauty. Visiting early in the morning or on weekdays is best to avoid crowds.
Crystal H — Google review
Very nice area with plenty of shopping and food options. Village atmosphere with some modern touches. Crystal clear water ponds. The water actually comes down from Mt Fuji. Parking was only 300 yen. Nice place to stop at if your in the area.

Waku-ike Pond

Mentioned on

Scenic spot
Waku-ike Pond is renowned for its crystal-clear and pristine water, earning it a spot among the nation's best spring water according to the Ministry of the Environment. Visitors can enjoy stunning reflections of Mt. Fuji in some of the 8 beautiful ponds and gardens, making it a picturesque location for nature enthusiasts. The area offers opportunities for shopping, enjoying street food, and feeding koi fish. It's advisable to wear comfortable walking shoes as there is plenty of walking involved.
Tourist spot to see Mount Fuji. A stop worth making. Wonderful shops and food stalls to enjoy a little local cuisine. We had a very tasty takoyaki for 800 Yen. The pond is wonderful and relaxing. Take some time to relax and enjoy the area. I'm a personal fan of the water wheel. For as crazy as the whole thing is it still manages to be relaxing. Enjoy your Mount Fuji day!

Your tour would be incomplete without making a trip to visit some of the local villages in Japan. Our village visit was to the tourist attractions of Kakuike Pond, located in Niigata Prefecture, Japan, that captures the serenity and beauty of nature. This place is famous for its 7 crystal clear ponds with crystal-clear running waters creating a stunning surrounding to admire and photo taking. The clarity of the pond is so pristine that it has gained the affectionate nickname "Niigata's natural mirror." Our visit falls in the late autumn months, this has brought about breathtaking freshness in the air we breathe displaying rejuvenated vibes for visitors to enjoy. The landscape adds a unique charm, transforming the ponds into a peaceful, and enchanting wonderland. If you're a photographer enthusiast you will l cherish the atmosphere here with its striking ponds making it a unique experience. There's nothing magnificent to shout about just a village with a souvenir shop at the main attraction but it remains somewhat off the beaten path, Kakuike Pond is a must-see for those who want to experience the untouched beauty of Japan’s landscapes. Here you will enjoy the peace and quiet nature has to offer in the natural beauty that Japan has to offer. Our visit was rather short with throngs of busses coming here. At the least it brings some memories of Japan's countryside.

The pond was a holy place. There were so many coins under the water. But now throwing coins on the pond are strictly prohibited. But beautifully scenic view and over crowded place.
Trisha T — Google review
Waku-ike Pond is a clear and beautiful spring pond, you can see right to the bottom, with lots of coins scattered around. Just a reminder: throwing coins is actually not allowed, even if it looks like others have done it. I saw one big white and orange carp swimming gracefully, really pretty.
Melvin J — Google review
Super clear pond with koi fish, so pretty and peaceful! Great photo spot, and on a clear day you can even see Mt. Fuji in the reflection. Definitely worth a stop at Oshino Hakkai! 🎏

8 beautiful Ponds and gardens. Number 7 can reflect Mt Fuji. Lots of chances to shop and grab drinks but wear sensible walking shoes to get about and maybe a back pack for your purchases, etc

No need to buy a ticket~ There are always a lot of tourists... The tofu is good, and the ice cream has Oshino spring water flavor. I highly recommend buying a ticket to take a photo with Mount Fuji and the spring water~

Imagine this: you're in a peaceful Japanese village, birds chirping, Mount Fuji in the distance... and then suddenly, three dragons burst out of a fountain and start spitting out the most delicious water you've ever tasted in your life. No, you're not hallucinating. Welcome to Waku-ike Pond in Oshino Hakkai. This water is so pure it tastes like liquid enlightenment. Legend says one sip adds three years to your life. I chugged half a bottle, so I’m basically aging in reverse now. If I keep drinking this, I might just unlock immortality or become a magical dragon myself. Bring a bottle. Bring two. Bring a cauldron if you must. Hydration has never been this magical. Honestly, if a water sommelier existed, this would be their final boss. Drink from the dragon. Embrace your destiny.

Okama-ike Pond is part of a group of eight ponds, each with its own unique features and names. The pond's name comes from the way the water bubbles up, resembling boiling in a pot. This beautiful heritage site was formed by lava strikes during Mount Fuji's eruption, creating crystal-clear waters that allow visibility down to 12 meters.
Extremely Beautiful village!! Amazing views of Fuji from it. Really Beautiful ponds, there’s a local grocery store too. Very hospitable people

It has great views of Mt. Fuji but the pond and surrounding tourist village is nothing special. There is some good Japanese street food available there though.

Deguchi-ike Pond is the largest among a group of ponds in the area. It got its name from being located at the 'exit' of this region. Shobu-ike is surrounded by iris beds, Kagami-ike offers a clear reflection of Mount Fuji, and Okama-ike bubbles up like water boiling in a pot. The other ponds include Waku-ike, Choshi-ike, Sokonashi-ike, and Nigori-ike.
Beautiful small village but very crowded on weekdays and weekends. No ticket required to roam around the village. Mt fuji is only visible on not so cloudy days ! Unfortunately i didnt get to Mt Fuji that day. Also can buy many souvenir in the shop there.
Shruti B — Google review
It's just a small sleepy lake with a few toriis and a "cabin". Sure, you could go on a small hike but I still don't see why you would get out of your way to come here (by the way, no parking and no restrooms)
Diego G — Google review
We arrive at 6pm but almost all stalls are close so we couldn’t few the vibe, but there was still many tourist at that time. Feels like a very small places, not much to see.
Shelley L — Google review
Deguchi-ike Pond is the most secluded and least visited of the Oshino Hakkai ponds, mainly because it’s quite far from the main cluster. The area is quiet and calm, surrounded by more natural scenery, and has a peaceful, untouched feel. It’s not as pretty or well-decorated as the others, so if you’re chasing Instagram photos, you can probably skip this one. But if you’re someone who appreciates raw nature and stillness, it’s a nice spot to enjoy away from the crowds. Just take note, the road in is narrow, parking is limited, and there’s a small fee for parking.
Melvin J — Google review
Small pond, clear water with some fishes in it. Doesn't have any "wow" factor. Not worth if you're walking over all the way from Oshino Hakkai. There is restroom available. And car park area next to the pond, that you have to pay.
Dexter C — Google review
The crowd was unbearable, and the shops closes early at around 4. There are english signs saying not to throw coins on the pond but is mostly ignored.
Gep E — Google review
I would definitely recommend swinging by if you are visiting Oshino Hakkai: very quiet place to have a break from overturism :)
Andrea G — Google review
A lot of insects and not much to see. Walked quite a while from the main area was quite disappointed

Nigori-ike Pond

Nigori-ike Pond is one of the eight ponds in Oshino Hakkai, a picturesque village known for its crystal-clear spring water. Each pond has its own unique feature, and Nigori-ike's claim to fame is its cloudy appearance. According to local legend, the pond turned cloudy after the owner refused to give water to a beggar priest. Despite this story, the pond remains relatively clean and offers a tranquil atmosphere for visitors to enjoy.
Great place to view mountain Fuji and also enjoy the pond!

It was a beautiful place to explore even for a short time because we spent most of it for lunch. Our tour guide recommended the grapes here and it’s delicious.

Crowded place. Clean water flowing through the ponds. Fish pellets on sale to feed the carps in the ponds. Big effort to drive through the narrow streets full of tourists in and out of a car park.

Choshi-ike Pond is a small, circular spring pond located in Oshino Village, known for its cultural and historical significance. It is one of the eight ponds that make up Oshino Hakkai, a sacred site for pilgrims climbing Mt. Fuji. Each pond is enshrined with a different dragon king, and pilgrims traditionally soaked and purified themselves in these ponds before ascending the sacred mountain.

(Translated by Google) It is said that Choshi Pond got its name from its resemblance to a sake cup, a type of sake bottle. Choshi Pond is the only pond in the Eight Lakes where you can see water gushing from the bottom, stirring up sand. There is an ancient legend surrounding this pond. Long ago, a bride let out a loud fart during her wedding ceremony. Ashamed of what had happened, the young and naive bride ran away from the ceremony, picked up the choshi, and threw herself into the pond. Since then, the story goes, the beautiful bride's figure has been seen at the bottom of the pond. Based on this sad story, the pond is now known as a matchmaking pond. A stone monument at Choshi Pond is engraved with the following words: [Choshi Pond], [Fourth Sacred Site], [Washukitsu Ryuo], and a waka poem expressing the bride's sadness. [Waka] "When I draw water from this Choshi pond, the surface of the water ripples, like a river flowing with waves, as if expressing the trembling sadness of my heart." Trivia: The name "Washukichi" engraved on the stone monument means "nine heads" in Sanskrit. This dragon king is said to have nine heads, devour evil dragons, and protect Mount Sumeru. Also known as the "Kuzu-ryuou," he is worshipped in Japan as a "dragon god" residing in the water. The area offers dining options, souvenir shops, and opportunities to purchase gifts.
You can enjoy the perfect view of Mt.Fuji with the village view. There is also big souvenir shop and snacks stand. Although it is a bit pricey. The Tofu is definitely worth trying. For the kusa mochi, you can find the cheaper on the side road for cheaper price.

In the middle of the Peace Memorial Park, there is a pond surrounding the memorial to the victims of the atomic bombing. It is an object with a memorial to the victims of the atomic bombing, and it is quite large so you can easily see it. In particular, the pond itself is ordinary, but can mean wishing for peace in terms of fame.

Chureito Pagoda

Mentioned on

Sights & Landmarks
Chureito Pagoda, located in Arakurayama Sengen Park, offers an iconic view of Mt. Fuji and is a popular spot for capturing picturesque photos. Accessible via 398 steps, the pagoda stands behind the five-story structure and provides a stunning backdrop of the mountain. While it can get crowded during cherry blossom season and autumn, visiting in February may offer a quieter experience with fewer visitors.
What a special spot! We hiked all the way up to the totally overcrowded main pic spot and then somehow had it in us to keep climbing. So glad we did!! Just a little higher up and there were next to no people and much more space to enjoy the view. Awesome little food trucks and lots of restaurants to explore at the base. There is a great little booth selling pictures and little souvenirs. All cash! I can’t even imagine how beautiful this area is in peak cherry blossoms. We were on the early side of season and nothing was in bloom here yet. Most people seemed like they were there on a tour, they got lucky it was a clear and sunny day. Just the day before was snowing and completely cloudy. We came over for the day from Hakone by taxi which was on the expensive side but so so worth it. We wanted to have the flexibility to come on a clear day and it turned out to be the best move all trip!
Lauren K — Google review
Chureito Pagoda: Great Effort, Small Reward The visit to the Chureito Pagoda is a classic example of excessive effort for an insufficient payoff—unless, of course, you luck out with the perfect day. The frustration begins immediately: an exorbitant parking fee of 1,000 JPY is demanded on almost every street corner, giving the feeling of being squeezed by tourists even before starting the climb. Next comes the exhausting ascent up hundreds of steps. This is a significant physical effort that certainly leaves visitors with high expectations for what awaits them at the top. But to great disappointment, the pagoda itself is not particularly impressive. It's nice, but it hardly justifies the arduous climb. In fact, the entire experience hinges on visibility: If you are lucky enough to have a clear, sunny day where Mount Fuji is revealed in all its glory and perfectly frames the red pagoda, then the picture is worth a million yen, and the effort is justified. However, if you arrive on a hazy, cloudy, or simply low-visibility day, the whole experience turns into a waste of precious time and energy. Bottom Line: It's only worth visiting if you are absolutely certain that the visibility to Mount Fuji's peak will be perfect.
Yariv K — Google review
I went at 5:30am in the morning thinking the crowd wouldn't be so bad. There definitely was a crowd there to see the iconic view of the pagoda and Mt Fuji. But the crowd wasn't too intense. Majority like minded "travellers". Too early for the mainstream tourist and influencer wannabes. The next time I think I would go just before daybreak and watch the sun rise over the majestic mountain. If you're thinking about taking the stairs up, it is a bit of a hike up, so be prepared. Don't be ashamed to have a stop and drink some water. There's a toilet at the top as well. And if you want the trail continue into the mounting going to the other side toward Lake Kawaguchi.
Bobby P — Google review
Chureito Pagoda is one of the most memorable places we visited in Japan. The climb up the stairs can be a bit tiring, but the view at the top is absolutely worth it. Seeing Mount Fuji framed behind the pagoda feels almost unreal. It is a place full of beauty and peace, and definitely something to experience at least once in a lifetime.
Slavi T — Google review
On our trip to Japan, my wife really wanted to see Mount Fuji from this top rated location. Not many people know that there is a dedictaed website that shows visibility level of Mount Fuji and provides hourly updates. We took a bus from Tokyo (Shinjuku station) to Chuodo Shimo Yoshida station and walked to the pagoda to see this stunning view. The walk to the entrance of pagoda is about 20 minute and then up to the pagoda is another 15-20 minute hike but definitely worth it.
Rushi G — Google review
We arrived at 715am on a cloudy October Tuesday morning. The pagoda is surrounded by beautiful forest, the observation deck serves to give you that magic photo with the pagoda and Mt Fuji behind it. We didn’t see the mountain today but it was still a beautiful sight. There is quite a walk to get to the pagoda up stairs or going around a winding path. There were signs warning you about bears (we didn’t see any) and there were hardly any people at this time of day. You can bring your dog for a nice walk too if you like. Parking is available, it seems you must pay for all or most of them but it’s worth it. It’s sad we didn’t get the ‘magic’ shot but it was a peaceful walk in a lovely area.
Kyle W — Google review
I first visited there around April — it was really nice. The cherry blossoms were beautiful, and the weather was perfect. After that, I went back a couple more times. But when you walk up the stairs, it can be a bit tiring, so make sure you’re ready. As some advice, wear something you can easily take off if it gets too hot, and don’t forget to bring some drinks with you.

Kawaguchiko Music Forest Museum

Museums
The Kawaguchiko Music Forest Museum is a must-visit for music enthusiasts. Housed in a charming European-style building, the museum showcases a remarkable collection of antique automatic musical instruments dating back to the early 1900s, including an orchestrion originally intended for the Titanic. Visitors can enjoy daily performances by these instruments as well as weekly live operas and other musical events, with a focus on weekends.
This remarkable attraction combines the charm of a meticulously crafted French village with an extraordinary collection of automated musical instruments, creating an experience that feels like stepping into a fairy tale. Modeled after French architecture, every building showcases beautiful Cinderella-castle-style design that provides endless photographic opportunities throughout the grounds. I arrived late in the day when Mount Fuji was completely obscured by clouds, having exhausted other sightseeing options, and entered more out of curiosity than expectation. What I discovered was far beyond anything I had anticipated. The admission fee includes access to scheduled musical performances featuring massive automated organs, live opera singers, and grand automated music organ concerts that demonstrate incredible engineering and artistry from a bygone era. What truly impressed me was witnessing the staff’s dedication during closing time, as they carefully maintained and adjusted the numerous antique automated instruments with obvious expertise and care. This daily ritual speaks to their commitment to preserving these mechanical marvels for future visitors, ensuring each performance maintains its magical quality. The gift shop offers an extensive selection of music boxes in various sizes and musical selections, plus unique items like violins. While perhaps not as comprehensive as Hokkaido’s famous Otaru music box shops, the quality and sound of their music boxes are genuinely beautiful and worth considering as souvenirs. The magical climax of my visit occurred when the clouds suddenly parted, revealing Mount Fuji in perfect view from the French village setting. This unexpected moment created an absolutely breathtaking backdrop that had every visitor frantically capturing photos of the stunning combination of European architecture and Japan’s most iconic mountain. The contrast between the French-style buildings and the majestic mountain created such a surreal, picture-perfect scene that it felt almost too beautiful to be real. This destination successfully combines cultural education, musical entertainment, architectural beauty, and natural scenery into one cohesive experience that appeals to visitors of all ages and interests.

This place is just awesome and full of music. Live music events during the day in different halls. I really don’t know how to describe the place , it’s a big museum and shop together all around music. All in one it worth paying the entrance fee - 1500 Yen / pers. At the entrance you’ll receive a leaflet with the music events ( hour and hall ) and I warmly recommend to see them. We saw that there is also a restaurant on site. Didn’t enter so we cannot say hoe it is. If you are in the area and you are a music lover and love to see musical instruments we highly recommend this place. By the way there are o lot of shops with wonderful stuff. We spent there approx 2,5 hours. If you are coming by car there is a huge parking place just across the street , just in front of the museum on the other side of the road. Enjoyyyyyy !!!!

A must visit for those who likes old pianos and musical instruments--this place has a massive collection. We were able to catch one "Opera" performance and the Opera Singer was really good! You can tour around the place for about an hour, it's quite small. I liked that they have a shop of Studio Ghibli merch! But if you prefer to be with nature, or not really a fan or old organs and recorders, you can skip this.

Visited on a rainy day thinking it would be a good wet weather activity but the museum is mostly not sheltered, except the performance halls. Nonetheless, they provided umbrellas that made exploring the museum much more enjoyable despite the weather. I only managed to catch two performances—the opera and organ— and thoroughly enjoyed both. I definitely regret not arriving earlier to experience more of them. The gift shop also has many interesting souvenirs, especially music boxes for a variety of music pieces, from classical to pop or even studio ghibli tunes. I would really suggest setting some time aside to browse even if you don't intend to buy anything. Lastly, the museum was pretty with flowers and photo spots, and I even managed to catch a glimpse of mt fuji despite the bad weather. Would definitely come back again next time!

Shinobi No Sato Ninja Village is a thrilling ninja-themed park located in Oshino Village, Yamanashi Prefecture. The village offers an array of interactive attractions such as the Karakuri House filled with ninja tricks, Ninjutsu Kaiden no Michi athletic experience, and a throwing star practice range. Visitors can also witness captivating ninja shows featuring authentic implements.
We stopped at Oshino Ninja Village for lunch on our way to Mount Fuji, and it was a fantastic experience. The village offers an immersive glimpse into the world of ninjas, featuring traditional Japanese gardens, exciting ninja shows, and engaging hands-on activities. If the sky is clear, you can also enjoy a breathtaking view of Mount Fuji. A must-visit spot if you're in the area!

Great place to explore your inner ninja! Good show, good place to chill and visit and learn something about the way of the ninja. As for the food, unfortunately, there is no halal food option or a very limited seafood option. But overall experience was good and recommended for "Must Visit".
Sulaiman N — Google review
We had such an amazing lunch at Shinibi No Sato. The food was great and the atmosphere even better! The garden is beautiful with fantastic viewss of Mount Fuji. The staff and ninjas are wonderful and so entertaining. Highly recommend a visit here.
Kari G — Google review
The Ninja Village is nice especially for kids and the staff was brilliant (I saw some families with children and they were having a blast). We were here for lunch as part of an excursion and the food was good, with vegetables available (so, healthy choices possible!). I only think there should be more food for these excursions as there simply wasn’t enough for everyone. Beautiful scenery and views of Mount Fuji!
André M — Google review
Fun outing with the kids. When i came here pre Covid, there’s seafood set lunch. Now these’s none, so as muslim we have very very limited choice of food here (not recommended). There’s also an entrance fee of JPY1,800 per adult to enter this place (i deducted a star due to this). The place is clean and beautiful, with a garden overlooking mt fuji. Love that the place is not crowded even during golden week. All the ninjas (staff) were friendly and accomodative when you ask for pictures/ they even volunteer to take your picture.
Ina M — Google review
Such a tourist trap. We stopped here for lunch during a Mount Fuji day trip. The buffet service was poor, with limited options and quantities. By the time I reached the buffet table, even the rice was almost gone. Despite there being two buffet tables, each group was only allowed to use one, which was badly organised. I wouldn’t recommend this place. Also, the toilets didn’t even have soap to wash your hands. The restaurant view was beautiful though.
Letícia V — Google review
Absolutely lovely place. Amazing food and atmosphere, even got to see a ninja. Make sure to walk the garden as well
Kay I — Google review
Ate as part of a bus tour. It was buffet style. The food was mediocre and mostly cold (room temp). The "ninja village" aspect was pretty mediocre too. It looked like there was supposed to be some sort of activities or something in the garden area, but all looked disused and we're empty when we visited.

Japanese regional restaurant
Sanrokuen is a traditional barbecue restaurant located in a 150-year-old building that offers an authentic dining experience reminiscent of ancient Japan. Diners can cook their own food on skewers over a charcoal grill at the center of their table, choosing from various set courses featuring meats, seafood, tofu, and vegetables. The restaurant's rustic ambiance with a thatched roof and dark wooden interior beams adds to the unique dining experience.
Food is absolutely amazing, and the portions are very generous. I ordered one ramen and a combo set with ramen, fried rice, and a raw egg on top. Everything was delicious, especially the rich, flavorful broth and perfectly cooked noodles. The fried rice had a nice smoky taste, and the raw egg added a creamy texture. All of this cost only about 2,000 ¥, which is a great deal for such a satisfying meal. Highly recommended!
Pleum A — Google review
Very nice BBQ Japanese setting serving a good variety of seafood and meats. I would recommend ordering ala carte unless you're a tofu, fishcake and rice ball person. The ambiance is relaxing and suitable for chit chatting or business executive discussion. Perfect place during winter.

Sanrokuen 山麓園 is an excellent place for a traditional, authentic Japanese robatayaki. The restaurant is in an over a hundred-year-old building. I am happy to have an enjoyable experience with all my family and friends in our Mt. Fuji trip. The restaurant is fantastic, and the ingredients they use are very fresh and of the highest quality. They also offer the best service. However, please don’t forget to make a reservation. Sanrokuen is usually booked weeks in advance.
Michael W — Google review
It’s an unique experience though on a higher end side. We ordered the 22k yen premium set for 1 which was enough for 2. It will be better if there are more instructions and guidance given to grilling the food as I was stupidly watching my neighbours how to cook certain dishes
J N — Google review
This place takes you back to medieval Japan vibes when you sit around a bonfire and grill, warm, cook your food. Say no more. I recommend if you come to Fuji, find this place. You really need to come and try it.
Chakkaphat C — Google review
Amazing BBQ experience plus a nice bowl of hoto. It was such an experience to bbq the food yourself. Will come again. Do note that there is a waiting time during peak times so do plan ahead.

10/10 for service, food and atmosphere. They were very friendly and explained the basics of robatayaki. It was super-tasty and the historic building is very charming.

Fuji Tempura IDATEN KAWAGUCHIKO

Mentioned on

Tempura restaurant
Located just a short walk from Kawaguchiko Station, Fuji Tempura Idaten offers a modern and relaxed dining experience. The restaurant serves a variety of freshly prepared tempura dishes at reasonable prices. Guests can enjoy an array of options including shrimp, soft-shell crab, vegetables, and even fugu pufferfish. Additionally, there are vegan choices available made with seasonal produce from local farmers.
We had lunch at this popular tempura restaurant after morning visit to Kawaguchi-ko area and about 30 minutes wait in queue in front of the shop. You just need to put your name on the wait list and when your number called, be ready. I ordered the assorted prawn / shrimp tempura with extra Yamanashi / Yoshida Udon. My wife got the cheap Udon + 1 shrimp tempura set, and an extra fried veggie kaki-age. All dishes are great, and the tempura were top notch. The batters were crispy but not oily so good frying technique is applied. The Yoshida Udon are thick, a bit firm and yet has nice chewy texture when you bite them. Good combo with the tempura. All dishes cost us around ¥ 5,300 after consumption tax. We got free cold water drink from the bar, so all costs are related to food dishes but they're still good value for your money considering good quality and portion. Please note that you can apply different salt condiments to your dishes as per your preferences, but we love the yuzu and matcha salts. You order dishes using the tablet ordering system and they have the English option. You can pay at the cashier using V/MC payment cards so another big plus for international customers. The restaurant is quite spacious and you can choose to sit on the bar like us or the table. The ambience is good and the place is bright and clean, good environment for family lunch.

A lot of tourists come to this tempura restaurant and yeah my friends who visit japan also recommend us as well. To be honest there were so many customers but no staff cared about people who waited outside. so i went inside and asked then I can go without waiting. And since lots of people said it’s delicious i expect a lot but.. yeah as expected it was disappointed Why? First before tempura come they served you rice and soup and I ordered soba , soba came first but need to wait tempura around 10-15min which you know.. rice was gonna cold andddd soba.. the noodles become like extended i was a bit disappointed. When tempura comes. Well yes it’s delicious but to be honest, i cannot say wow oh my goodness it’s toooo goood. Naaaah. It’s delicious as normally!!! Flour was a bit too thick for me. Yeah it’s not much oily that’s why everyone like it I think? But.. hmm well ok it’s just good. If I need to wait for this restaurant? No for 100% But if i just happened to come here , well try once also okay :) All is depends on you. I don’t say it is bad. I say it’s good as normally. Try one is okay tho:)
Piraya M — Google review
I wanted to have tempura and noodles after a long ride from Tokyo to Mt. Fuji. We found this famous restaurant on Google. I decided to give them a try. We are lucky to have the last big table when we arrived at the restaurant very late in the evening. I knew they were good as soon as I walked into the restaurant. They're swamped, and the food smells good. The tempura and all other dishes are very delicious. The service is also excellent. We have a very enjoyable meal after a long day.
Michael W — Google review
A decent place to try tempura. For me, the taste was average and I honestly couldn’t recall anything particularly special about my dish. It wasn’t bad, but also not worth a long wait. That said, the queue system was quite well organized, which helped make the experience smoother.
Pr C — Google review
Dined here while waiting for the bus back to town. The eel they served was huge and tasty, paired with a good amount of rice that leaves you feeling full and satisfied. The tempura that came with it helps to reset the palette a bit, and the dipping sauce gave a fresh taste. I enjoyed the meal!
Joey L — Google review
Quality tempura and quality wagyu nestled near Kawaguchiko station. This would be a nice to place to have lunch while visiting the area. The service is excellent and they even show you the tempura pieces one by one as they serve you your tempura pieces. My only gripe is that is kinda pricey. I mean don't get me wrong the food quality is top notch. But I still think its quite expensive, a bit more on touristy prices.
Sherwin G — Google review
The tempura was just average — nothing memorable. The only thing that impressed me was the fish suridane, but since we have similar seasoning in my country, I didn’t buy any. The grilled chicken was quite disappointing. There was only one staff member working at the time, and she seemed to be handling everything by herself. She forgot to give us a dividing plate, so I couldn’t start eating until I waited a long time to get her attention. Also, I found the overall pricing quite overpriced for the quality and service provided.
On N — Google review
One of the few restaurants open late at night in the Fujikawaguchiko area. It's known for its tempura dishes, so we ordered the Fujisan Tendon set, arranged to resemble Mount Fuji and suitable for 2–3 people. The set includes miso soup and tempura sauce, which are self-service at a dedicated station. The food took quite a while to be served, as the restaurant was full even at 8:30 PM. The atmosphere was lively and crowded, partly due to live music. There was nothing particularly special about the tempura or the sauce. Its main highlight is the very large portion size — even enough for up to 4 people. However, the price is quite high, likely due to its location in a busy tourist area.

Hotokura Funari Kawaguchiko

Mentioned on

Hoto noodle restaurant
The hoto noodle restaurant, "Hoto" in Atami, is known for its delicious noodles. The restaurant has a wide menu with plenty of choices, and the staff is attentive and willing to help you find what you're looking for. There's also a full bar where you can enjoy drinks or sake, as well as wine and beer. There's free wifi available, so you can get work done or catch up on your social media while you're eating.
I recently visited Hotokura Funari Kawaguchiko with my family and while the menu options were somewhat limited, the experience was still worthwhile. The highlight was definitely the stunning view of Mt. Fuji — absolutely breathtaking and a perfect backdrop for a meal. The food itself was decent, not particularly memorable but satisfying enough after a day of exploring. The hoto noodles were hearty and comforting. The restaurant is quite popular, so be prepared to queue for a bit, especially during peak hours. The interior has a warm, traditional feel, adding to the overall atmosphere. The staff were polite but seemed a bit rushed, likely due to the crowd. If you’re looking to enjoy a meal with a great view of Mt. Fuji, it’s worth a visit.
GKN — Google review
We came here based on reviews, and it did not disappoint! The food was delicious, especially the kimchi soup. The portions were generous and well worth the price. The view from the restaurant was stunning—you can see Mount Fuji very clearly. The restaurant is quite spacious, making it great for families and large groups. The restrooms were clean, and you can take a queue ticket yourself at the entrance, which is very convenient. The staff provided great service. If we’re in the area again, we’ll definitely come back!
Pang T — Google review
Came to Hotokura Funari primarily because it was near where we stayed (Noborisaka) and didn't regret one bit in terms of the food. Although if we came here for lunch we might have seen the Fuji view. Ordered the chicken and pork versions, along with the horse sashimi and a bottle of the fuji beer. Portions are quite huge for individual. Taste wise - the hoto noodles (thick, flat wheat noodles) felt a bit like knife-cut noodles in China/Korea, but the miso-based soup along with the squash were where all the flavours are in. Squash and vegetables were cooked well, not a mushy mess but sufficiently soft enough. Initially, the waiter told us that the horse sashimi was out. After a few to and fro by him from the kitchen to our table (was quite confused by him myself), he suddenly came back with a plate which was quite a delight. The horse meat is very lean and a little tougher than beef, slightly stringy but has no gamey taste to it. Definitely a must try. Ordered a fuji beer since we were in the area, the ale was fruity but not very light, and went well with the horse sashimi surprisingly.

Tried the famous houtou near Mt. Fuji, no wonder it’s loved by the locals! The thick, chewy noodles and rich broth hit the spot, but the surprise star was the squash — it really elevated the whole dish with its subtle sweetness. Would’ve been even more special if Mt. Fuji decided to show up, but still such a cozy and satisfying experience. 🍲⛰️
Myron M — Google review
One of the must-try dishes when visiting Yamanashi, and this restaurant serves delicious hoto noodles. The place is aesthetic with views of Mount Fuji. Highly recommended!
Angeline C — Google review
A new experience in Kawaguchiko, but a bit underwhelming. Came here with a group of 6 friends and waited about 20 minutes to get a table on an unassuming weekday night. I got the pork hotou for 1650 yen and some sake for 800 yen. The broth and ingredients were very fresh and make a hearty combo. There were loads of squash, mushrooms, and thick noodles that soaked up the flavor of the broth. My main complaint is that for a "pork hotou", there was little to no pork. I'm talking 1-2 tiny thin slices at best, which was very disappointing. Otherwise, the atmosphere and the service of this place were great. Stunning restaurant and you have to take off your shoes to enter. If I was ever back in the area, I'd try something else on their menu?
David P — Google review
The soup was so delicious! They give huge portions. The noodles are very thick and cooked perfectly. The soup is full of fresh vegetables. I got the seasonal oyster soup and my husband got the pork. Both were very good. I really liked the fried potatoe too!

Watanabe Udon offers an authentic local dining experience where the staff speaks only Japanese and the menu is exclusively in Japanese as well. The service is friendly and accommodating, and guests are required to remove their shoes before being seated on the tatami platform. The restaurant can get crowded during peak hours, but it's worth it for their delicious homemade udon dishes like the classic egg and beef udon.
If you are looking to immense yourself in a local dining experience, this is it. Everyone speaks only in Japanese and the menu is only written in Japanese. The service is very friendly and patient so don’t worry about that. You have to remove your shoes before stepping up the tatami platform. We dropped our stuff at the table and then proceeded to order at the counter. They will serve the food at your table and you can pay at the counter after your meal. Self-service water dispenser is also available next to the counter. The homemade udon was thicker than usual and had a great bite to it. This restaurant was very crowded on Sunday 12pm. Queue time about 20 minutes After we were seated, it was very difficult to gain the attention of the server to take order. Another 10 minutes wasted. The grilled fish we ordered was very delicious and fine. It was one of the best grilled fish I ate so far. 5 stars Grilled prawns was quite disappointed. Came here for the views, but stayed on to try the grilled fish. Totally worth it. The fresh, freshwater fish grilled over strong flames with just salt, so fresh and the flesh was extremely sweet. Not a bit of fishy-ness coming from the insides of the fish as well. Price was a bit steep for the size, but for the quality and the taste experience definitely worth it.

This is the spot to have lunch when in Oshino Hakkai. Yes, there’s a line, but the food is worth the wait. The udon is hand-cut and has a firm texture compared to udon elsewhere. The soup’s miso flavor is just right — it compliments the udon, and is also great to slurp. The fried rice is also fantastic, and it magically transforms when you eat it together with the udon soup. In case I find myself in the vicinity, I’ll definitely grab another bowl of udon here. Very delicious! Oh, and it’s not expensive as well! Around 600 yen for a large bowl of udon.

A traditional seating restaurant which serves both cold and hot udon and soba. The tempura udon was particularly nice :) Since they only accept cash, we had to retrieve our money from the car, and they were very kind to let us wait. If you visit Oshino as part of your Mt Fuji tour and stop here to have lunch in the city, this is a great place to eat authentic and delicious soba noodles. We choose to go off the tourist beaten track as nothing in the tourist area looked nice. The food was extremely commercialised and made for tourists, which, of course, may not taste anything Japanese. So, if you’re a traveller who likes exploring more authentic places to eat, this is a place I cannot recommend enough. We were the only two foreigners in the restaurant. The food was amazing! Many good reviews so I got curious about it. However, the udon is simple (harder than usual, but that’s the local way), the soup came a bit too cold, the ambiance is a bit too cheap. Maybe I was expecting too much?

(Translated by Google) I visited on a weekday in September 2025. I was able to get a seat around 11am without having to wait. The chef greeted me with a cheerful call. Most of the customers were people working in the area. It seemed like people in work clothes tended to order the yakiniku set meal, while people in dress shirts tended to order the udon. The yakiniku set meal was pork, rich and delicious. The yakiniku set meal comes with a bowl of udon, and if you order a large portion, the udon becomes full-sized. This does not mean that the yakiniku itself or the rice becomes a large portion. The udon here is delicious. It has a firm texture, but the udon noodles are sharp and slightly transparent, allowing you to taste the umami of the wheat. The soup is made with bonito stock, so it's not too salty.

The dining experience at 牛舎, a yakiniku restaurant, is truly remarkable. The food is absolutely incredible and worth the price with its exquisite meat quality and delicious flavors. The staff members are exceptionally welcoming and kind, going above and beyond to accommodate guests, even those who don't speak Japanese. This famous local restaurant has a high rating for a reason - the service, food, and people are all top-notch.
The staffs are professional and very polite especially towards visitors from aboard. We feel so welcomed . Beef are good and the charcoal grill added more flavor to the meat. Overall we enjoyed the meal

The food was excellent with top-quality meat. They also have rare Burgundy wines that are hard to find. The owner provided outstanding service and great recommendations. I’ll definitely be coming back again!

10/10 recommend! One of our favorite meals on our trip so far. We ordered the wagyu beef steak (incredible grade/quality), vegetables, bibimbap, kimchi, and cold tofu. The owner and staff were some of the kindest and most welcoming people we’ve encountered abroad, it was heartwarming. Amazing food and experience, must try!!
Britni B — Google review
Such a wonderful restaurant with the best beef I have ever had! The wagyu rib was so tender and flavourful. We ordered: wagyu rib, rice, kimchi (incredible), egg soup and tofu. The staff were so kind and made sure we enjoyed ourselves, the prices are reasonable too.

The meat was delicious and the owners were so nice. They have an English menu available, and the servers try their best to communicate with you :) if you are passing by, please do try this restaurant as it is really amazing ! Definitely going to go back there if we’re in the area !

I love its simplicity. You need to be there just 45 mins prior to scheduled departure time, no shoe removal, courteous people, and they have a little cafe. I wish all the airports were like that.

Small airport with commercial flights between Oshima and Chofu

Foreigner friendly! Landing fees are 1000 yen per landing (including touch and go). Landing south is a bit of a challenge due to the geography - expect some turbulence on short final caused by the hills.

Tiny, clean, cosy airport. All within 20s walk (arrival, departure, souvenir, check-in, restaurant, parking...).

U.S. Air Base Yokota Japan

United States Armed Forces Base
Air force base
Military base
Yokota Air Base in Japan hosts the annual Friendship Festival, a highly anticipated event that showcases a wide array of aircraft including U.S. military and Self-Defense Force planes. Visitors are often amazed by the vastness of the sky and the rare opportunity to see these planes up close. Despite long lines, the experience is deemed worthwhile as attendees witness flight demonstrations and gain insight into national defense efforts.
This is a U.S. Air Force base. It is one of the most popular bases among U.S. soldiers. Except for special events, the number of people who can enter is limited. Nationals of China, Afghanistan, and other countries with poor or complicated relations with the U.S. are not allowed here, even during special events. If you have a permitted nationality, you may enter on regular days with an escort from a U.S. soldier. There are restrictions on what can be purchased on the base due to customs and tariffs between Japan and the U.S. This is in addition to the restrictions on what can be allowed in Japan. At least in the food court of the BX, you can purchase goods without any problem. If you are visiting here, have fun.

Staff are amazing. Young gentleman gave us a ride to the train station and stopped along the way for an ATM. Showed us how to set up payment for tickets as well.

5/18/2025 Visited here the second time for the yearly Japan America Friendship festival. Everyone in the army was nice and kind. They do accept USD but still do the conversion to JPY so JPY was so weak. Cash based cashiers during the festival. Some air performances were shown and people were so excited and taking pictures and videos. Some real American stuff were there for the event, too.
Y I — Google review
It was a wonderful festival! I hope that the cultures of both Japan and America, and the people of both countries, will continue to be friendly in the future. I also hope that we will be new DEI - embracing diversity, and cherishing identity - as friends.

Mt. Fuji Shizuoka Airport West Observation deck

Observation deck
(Translated by Google) It's a small airport and there aren't many flights, but it's a fun place❗ It's spacious and feels great! ️ The FDA planes come in many colors, and every time I go, I wonder what color I'll come next with my kids!? I'm playing a color guessing game❗(lol) Don't forget to take measures against the cold in the upcoming season! ️ The tea you can enjoy on the observation deck is delicious!

(Translated by Google) This is an observation deck located on a small hill. It is about 750m away from the terminal, so it is quite a distance from the Sekiunin Observation Deck on the opposite side, so it is quite difficult to access on foot. Also, depending on the direction of the wind, there is a high possibility that the plane will not come close to you, so the direction of the wind is important in order to enjoy flying from here.
