Nature & Parks
Griffiths Island is a picturesque island connected to the mainland by a causeway, featuring a nature reserve and an iconic lighthouse. The 20-minute walk from the bridge to the lighthouse offers stunning views of the bushy trail and rocky surroundings, perfect for capturing beautiful photos. This island is also home to a protected short-tailed shearwater colony, adding to its natural charm.
Griffty Island is a very clean and unique area with lots of wildlife. There is a circular walking track that includes a lighthouse and takes a few kilometers to complete. The beach has sand erosion, and the sea is turquoise and full of fish. Along the coast, there are shearwater birds’ nests everywhere. It’s a peaceful and special place, perfect for walking and enjoying nature and animals.

During our short visit to Port Fairy, we made time to walk around Griffiths Island, and it ended up being a quite enjoyable. The island is easy to access via a causeway, and once across you’re greeted with wide walking paths that loop around the coastline. There are two main tracks to the lighthouse, one 1.17 km and the other 1.66 km, so we decided to do both, making a complete circuit to take in all the scenery. The walk itself is varied and interesting. Some sections take you over sandy dunes and along the beach, while others follow wooden stairs and boardwalks through coastal scrub. The paths are well maintained and easy to follow, suitable for most fitness levels. Along the way, we were lucky enough to spot a couple of wallabies grazing in the grass, which was a nice surprise. The lighthouse is the main feature and makes for fantastic photos. On the day we visited the weather was changing quickly from bright blue skies to heavy cloud cover and even patches of dark rain clouds, which created different moods and backdrops for photography. Combined with the ocean views and rugged shoreline, it was a stunning spot to explore. If you’re in Port Fairy, Griffiths Island is definately worthwhile. Peaceful, scenic, and full of character.

Lovely area to walk and see wildlife. If it's windy, take the rightward path to the lighthouse. You'll have the sand blowing against your back instead of in your face.

📍 Griffiths Island, VIC, Australia A forgotten paradise. Pure nature. Just 4 hours train+bus from Melbourne. Should this still exist in 2025? The South hike is more challenging and takes longer time than the north hike, with plenty of rocks and obstacles. which will make it impossible for wheelchair access. Therefore, ppl with wheelchair should go for North track. This island has no living house on it, which makes it a true hidden pure nature gem. You may come across wallabies or bird migrating from Antartica depending on the season. Shot from DJI Mini 4 Pro
Thân N — Google review
A magical place to walk and see wildlife. We were delighted to see the wallabies who were just so graceful and elegant with their little joeys. We visited on a rainy windswept day but it was still a really nice peaceful walk to the lighthouse and along the beach. I would absolutely recommend.
Lucy W — Google review
I visited this place with my friends and family with kids. It was a small walk of around 700m till the lighthouse. Walk was pretty nice with a bit of clear water walk and then a walk between flora . The weather was no AO great as it started raining as soon as we started to enjoy the view. The lighthouse was nothing spectacular but the overall sea view and a rainbow at back made it mesmerising. Sea waves were big and the rocks made them look magnificent. A must place to visit in Port Fairy. You also get a park near parking and a nice area to sit and have picnic if it’s sunny. 😊 Hope you enjoy your day .

If you've got time to explore while travelling past Port Fairy, please stop and take this magnificent walk (it also helps stretch your legs from the car ride!) Was phenomenal and exciting for all ages 😊

Nice little island to hike to the lighthouse. Full hike takes an hour and it’s a mix of trails and beach paths and a nice little meander around this tiny island. Lots of birds to spy. Crashing waves off the Indian Ocean are very awe-inspiring and therapeutic.

Port Fairy Lighthouse on Griffiths Island is a historical landmark located at the meeting point of Moyne River and the ocean. The island offers easy one-hour walks, swimming spots, and picturesque landscapes for photography. It also houses a small lighthouse and a protected mutton-bird colony that visits from October to April. Built in 1859, the lighthouse stands 13 meters above sea level and does not allow public access inside.
Beautiful for a wander! On the day we went it was fairly quiet. Quiet and lovely for a wander. I took the shorter easy to walk path. Such a beautiful place. Across from the lighthouse walk is a great park and public toilets. It’s a really well set up area.
Melissa — Google review
Beautiful walk around the island, it takes about 1hr 45 min., very easy to do. You will admire volcanic rocks, white sand that blends with the yellow sand, crystal clear shallow water and powerful ocean waves.
Federica T — Google review
A beautiful walking loop takes you along the beach and leads to the lighthouse. It’s a great spot to take a break. Like all lighthouses, this one is also stunning.
Nurcihan K — Google review
A beautiful flat walk on a wide path will lead you to the lighthouse on Griffiths Island. Absolutely beautiful. I am so pleased we went in this walk. I was surprised by the beautiful scenery and waterholes that we came across. The lighthouse is very photogenic and the area has so much history. Absolutely stunning and well worth a visit! If you are going to continue your way around the island it is important to note that this is not flat. It requires scrambling over rocks and sand dunes while praying you don’t slip! Lots of fun but certainly not for those with mobility issues.
Sandi G — Google review
Choice of walking trails to reach the lighthouse. Pathways are well defined. Great views along the way, you might even meet some wildlife!
Val B — Google review
There are two main paths to the Griffith Island Lighthouse: The left path is the shorter and flatter route. The right path is the scenic route that takes you along the beach. This path requires navigating some boulders, but is otherwise a straightforward and easy walk.
Ziard — Google review
Was great but I wish they let you know that you can’t get to it when tide is in unless you take the shorter walkway.

East Beach is a highly popular destination known for its safety and expansive sandy shores. It offers ideal waves for novice surfers and features the charmingly named Pea Soup cove, which boasts tranquil waters perfect for snorkeling. The beach has been recently upgraded with improved accessibility to the water, including footpaths, steps, and ramps. Visitors can enjoy clear light blue waters that remain shallow even when walking out quite far.
Fabulous beach for surfing small and medium waves. I've been both to Warrnambool Flume/Surf Beach and Port Fairy East Beach, and Port Fairy takes the medal. The waves are more visible (easier to predict if they can be surfed) even with winds from S/SW, and the ocean is, on average, quieter, thus allowing the paddle to be easier and less tiring. Warrnambool Beach ocean conditions are usually more unstable; waves that seem to be surfa-able but suddenly turn out to not break at all or have three to four waves at once, all of them going in different directions. In contrast, Port Fairy's waves are straight and consistent, facing towards one direction. Ah, and the water is so clean! If the weather is very rainy and windy, seaweed could be brought to the sand and onshore, but not as much as Warrnambool's beach. (Sorry, Warrnambool!)

This is a great beach which also has a surf life saving club. The water does not get deep to quickly, so you can walk out quite far with it still being shallow. Not to mention the very clear light blue water.

Enjoyed our 9 holes when viisting Port Fairy. The booking online was easy and we were welcomed in the Pro shop and by the Captain. Some spectacular views along the coast and challenging holes you need to be accurate a few lost balls into the spinnifex. Will visit again.

If you’re in Port Fairy and you play golf, you gotta make time and play 18 holes here. Simply beautiful and right next to the water. So relaxing! Check out when competition days are and try to avoid them so that you can get a smoother run on the course. Staff are friendly and helpful too so great experience!

The best golf club with a public access for all Golf lover should play when they are in Melbourne, specifically when visiting Great Ocean road. The online booking was very easy and we were welcomed very well by staff at the pro shop. I love every single hole in the course. especially on the back 9, You will fall in love with the 12th, till the 16th. Make sure you enjoy that particular holes. I met a couple from local area and they are very nice showed me several unique spot on the course. Five stars golf class

Great course, great value, with about 6 holes on top of the dunes/water front with great views. The other holes are good but get a bit “cow paddock” during winter with soft fairways my ball kept getting plugged and covered in mud. The greens are PURE so good to putt on and fast! But as a result are generally flat and have little movement. Will definitely come back in summer

Fantastic links course, rolling fairways, uneven lies, fast greens and when the wind gets up- woah! A bit dry atm but tees and greens are in good condition. $70 for 18 holes, not cheap but the back nine is as scenic and challenging as a links course can be b

What a unique place. It has the power to transport you to north Europe, not just because its magnificent golf course and vistas but its friendly members. Club Captain not just share his wisdom on how to play the challenging course under windy conditions: Keep it Left at all cost; but also took a very picturesque picture of us. Pizza restaurant
Coffin Sally, located at 33 Sackville St in Port Fairy, is a popular spot known for its wood fire pizza and cocktails. The pizzeria has garnered praise from both locals and tourists for its genuine knockout pizza, with the mushroom pizza being a standout dish. The establishment's happening ambiance and friendly crowd make it a favorite Friday night destination for many in Port Fairy.
What a VIBE! Coffin Sally ticked all the boxes for a full sensory dining experience. The open fire, the decor, the music, drinks, food and the staff! Well done team. So many cosy nooks, from the front bar, to the courtyard and the extra dining room that lead on from it were all very welcoming. Great drinks list, couldn’t resist getting the spicy Marg. The roast Veg pizza made without cheese was ridiculously good, and dare I say the gluten free pizza base was just as good or even better than the gluten one?! Excellent job at selecting quality ingredients and options for all. Can’t wait to stop in again on our next trip to Port Fairy.

Located inside a 19th Century former undertaker’s building, Coffin Sally is a local hot spot for quality pizzas, local craft beers and wines. The delicious thin crust pizzas are lovingly made using the finest quality ingredients. We shared 4 pizzas and were very impressed! The atmosphere is upbeat, friendly and the staff are super welcoming and knowledgeable. The earthy design features lots of timber, stone and an eclectic mix of decor including skulls! A not to miss experience if you’re in Port Fairy!

The best pizza I've had and I have had a lot of pizza. I don't say it lightly. Each pizza had a distinct flavor. We had the Mexicana, Mushroom, and Capricciosa. Staff is very nice and accommodating. The decorations are very unique and give off a vibe of their own.

We cant recommend this place enough. If you want take away Pizza grab a drink in the groovey bar hidden behind the Pizza shop while you wait. If you want a few drinks, chill in a rad bar with awesome staff then order a delicious pizza. I'm fructose intolerant and they accommodated perfectly. The garlic prawn pizza can come with no garlic and no tomato sauce. I added ham and white anchovies 🤤. Bloody amazing. Mrs had the FIOR DI SALLY. Delicious. Great bases and fresh toppings. Definitely be back for more. Thank you everyone

Unassuming eatery serving delicious pizza. It’s not your typical pizza spot – there’s a cool, creative vibe that adds to the experience Definitely worth visiting if you’re in Port Fairy
HarmaTime — Google review
The pizzas were very..very..delicious, although the prawn pizza didn't have many prawns on it... The base and pizza sauces were spot on. The menu would benefit from having some thick cut potatoes with rosemary and rock salt. The staff could have also been a little more welcoming and warm. The decor is really cool throughout.

Absolutely wonderful meal and service! We also stayed the night at the Merrijig Inn which was fantastic. Beautiful, generous, and full of warmth and character. I can’t wait to come back!!!

To breakfast here again would be reason enough for another visit, though the cosy room with comfy bed and dormer window was its own recommendation. The absence of a TV was welcome (we watched the football on the screen at The Stump).
Otto B — Google review
WARNING!!!! The care factor of the owners is zero! We’ve dined at The Merrijig a few times. Meals have been ok, but less than anticipated especially when the price is high. ( tough steak, uncooked pasta, salty salty food, unbalanced flavours, odd combinations, no real love on the plate) I’m a chef , so I feel my critique is somewhat valid. We’ve never brought our disappointments to staffs attention, as Siobhan and Leroy (who has left) have always made our evenings lovely, with their attention and friendly manner, we’ve enjoyed the vibe they create, especially in the front bar. Recently we managed to make a booking to stay the night. . . . Our room was canceled, they’d doubled book. Apparently eight other rooms were also double booked, how things happened is mind boggling) Liz and Tanya’s damage control was insulting. We were emailed about alternative accommodation, weren’t offered complimentary meals drinks, breakfast, nothing. When Liz finally answered the phone, she sarcastically passive aggressively understood and apologised. I suggested offering something complementary would have been appropriate, and was rudely told to come have a meal and stay, bring your dog, all on us. As if she’d really follow through with that offer. Ridiculous behaviour, unprofessional. We won’t be back! And Liz after letting me know, over and over and over that you’ve had 15 years in the industry you’d think you’d be able to get things right and manage mistakes more appropriately.
Bob S — Google review
We could see the passion from the chef. The price was high for the amount of food we were served. The staff could have been more attentive, drinks were charged but not received. Water not topped up without asking. I also noticed that serving staff had an extremely soiled bandaid on her thumb that was in very close proximity to my food.
Bernadette S — Google review
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. It's a quirky, characterful bed and breakfast with a great deal of history, so expect somewhat unusual room shapes, cluttered spaces and uneven floors! However this should not distract from the wonderfully friendly and efficient hosts, delicious home made breakfasts and perfect location to explore Port Fairy. My only criticism is that you can hear conversations in adjoining rooms but I guess that's an aspect of such as property. We enjoyed our stay very much and would highly recommend if you enjoy more than a plain motel.
Mark S — Google review
We had a wonderful time staying overnight at Merrijig Inn. The food was excellent in the restaurant and all the staff couldn't do enough to accommodate us, we would thoroughly recommend staying at this querky, homely property . A fabulous experience !

The restaurant's staff has been praised for their professionalism and hospitality, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for a memorable meal, Blakes Restaurant promises to deliver impressive menu options and superb hospitality.
The most magnificent dining experience we have had for a long time and during our week long stay in Port Fairy - this place is an absolute must! The food couldn’t have been more special, so fresh, beautiful flavours and just simple food done incredibly well. A menu with something for everyone, it was difficult to choose as there was so many good options! We were served by Donna who was so lovely, engaged and welcoming! She couldn’t have taken better care of us, she recommended great wine and helped decide what dish to choose. The place itself has a beautiful warm ambience, and wasn’t overly loud or too much with each couple of tables separated in dining rooms throughout the restaurant. Dish highlights were the seafood chowder, the eye fillet steak and the chocolate profiteroles. You will not be disappointed with this place!
Hannah B — Google review
The seafood chowder was a favourite, we tried to re-make when we got home and it just wasn’t the same. Intimate atmosphere, perfect for couples or small groups. The staff were lovely and were able to fit us in even though our booking had been changed.
Mindi L — Google review
The only thing better than the service is the food. Blakes is a truly lovely experience, with amazing staff and a great menu. The seafood board is great value and recommended. Great list of wines and cocktails to pair!
Michael R — Google review
Blakes Restaurant was a great experience in the area. We came without a reservation, and Donna was incredibly kind and welcoming – she even gave us a large table for six, just for the three of us, even though all other tables were already booked. I’d definitely suggest booking in advance. They offer two set menus: 2 courses for $70 or 3 courses for $90 (beverages not included). I started with the black seafood chowder, which was an excellent way to begin dinner, and for my main course I had the lamb with purée, broccoli, and spinach – simply delicious! The service was fantastic throughout. Donna not only made us feel at home but also gave us great tips about places to visit and things to do in the area. Truly a warm and memorable dining experience.
Michael G — Google review
Blakes is such a wonderfully cozy and welcoming restaurant – it truly feels like home. Donna is the absolute gem of this place! She is always polite, tactful, attentive, and ready to help with anything. This is exactly the kind of service you hope for – warm and professional without being overwhelming. The food was outstanding in every way – beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. I ordered the beef steak, which was cooked exactly as I love it – simply perfect. The seafood cream chowder was divine. Donna recommended a Shiraz to pair with my steak, and it was spot on – a flawless match. My friends ordered the lamb, which was tender, juicy, and cooked to perfection. After a week in Australia, this was without a doubt the best breakfast we’ve had! Bravo, Donna, and bravo Blakes! Highly recommended.

Exceptional food. Best seafood chowder we’ve ever eaten. For mains we all had fish - each had a different type (salmon, barramundi) but all beautifully cooked with crispy skin and generous sides
Eleanor P — Google review
We had the three course dinner and could not speak highly enough of the quality of the food and service. We had entrées of Seafood Chowder, Soup and Prawns and mains of Eye Fillet and Lamb Rump and all were superb. Profiteroles and Crumble were also exceptional. All serves were generous, with locally sourced products and wine list whilst not extensive was more than adequate… and very well priced. Only disappointment was that after coming down at least once a year to Port Fairy for 25 years this was the first time we had tried Blakes! Will definitely be coming back!

Thai restaurant
Lemongrass Thai in Port Fairy is a popular dining spot known for its consistently excellent Thai cuisine and great service. The restaurant offers a varied menu with options like beef massaman curry, yellow curry with chicken, seafood combination fried rice, and honey duck. The staff is welcoming and efficient, making diners feel at home. It's advisable to book ahead during peak seasons due to its popularity. Additionally, the restaurant also offers takeaway options for those looking to enjoy their delicious food at home.
Very friendly staff who remember a face. Delicious food. Been dining here for many years, highly recommend.
Scarlett — Google review
Massaman beef was horrible, couldn’t eat a single bite. The beef was rock hard, dry and inedible. Roti was crispy and snapped like overcooked pastry. Thai fried rice was ok as was the chicken pad thai. Service was terrible, asked for water, got a bottle with no glasses until we got someones attention and asked. No serving utensils for any dish, empty drink bottles piled up, no one took them away even after they struggled to fit the food onto the table. Would only recommend if nothing else is open.
Karrie D — Google review
Dined in the restaurant 18 months ago and it was one of the best Thai meals we'd had. Returned looking forward to another great meal but they were doing takeaway only even though there was only one couple dining in the whole place. Food was a disappointment this time being very light on ingredients, swimming in sauce. Curry was tasty but more like laksa! The sweet and sour was similarly light on and lacked flavour. Unfortunately, we won't be returning despite friendly and helpful service.

Probably one of the best Thai meals I have had - and a wonderful unexpected treat in beautiful Port Fairy. We found Lemongrass in Bank Street during a walk around the town, and the locals confirmed that it was a great choice. Booking for dinner was important, as the place quickly filled up and there was a constant stream of takeaway orders. The food was excellent and very reasonable in price, and I would recommend the Massuman Curry - great flavour and very tender beef. Staff were lovely and service quick and efficient.

Great little restaurant in Pt Fairy. Excellent service from start to finish. The two front of house girls were efficient and very pleasant and everyone seemed to be enjoying the meals. I had the beef massaman curry and it was delicious. In peak season I would recommend booking as it is very popular. It was full when we were there off peak on a cold and windy night. Great value too.

Very happy that we’ve walked far enough on Bank Street and found this restaurant. We were only in town for a night and hadn’t booked anything for dinner. They took us in although the place was packed. We’ve got a table for two right away and were set for our orders in no time. The roasted duck red curry and the Barramundi fish were absolutely delicious, we loved every bite. Highly recommend to come here. Lovely staff and great food for very reasonable prices. Thank you!

Great value for money. Duck red curry was very tasty. Service was very good. Limited wine selection. Would definitely go back.

We had heard Lemongrass was the best Thai in Port Fairy and overall we were happy with the food. However, we did wait over an hour for the entree to arrive. In fairness, the menu DOES say that there’ll be a wait but, it WAS a long time. The chicken spring rolls were great and I highly recommend them. The chicken green curry was great but, the chicken was a little dry. I still enjoyed the meal overall. I liked the coconut rice which had more flavour than most. The fried fish with 3 sauces was very crispy, and I loved the apple strips with it.

Gorgeous brunch/ cafe place. Beautiful decoration and great food. We're addicted to their homemade chips. I do wish the open sandwich steak is a bit more tender but flavors wise it was excellent. Friendly service and decent coffee too. Highly recommend

Port Fairy was extremely busy on the Monday we visited due to the festival. We stopped by Bank St as it was the only place we could acquire a coffee in the throng! Possibly the best eggs benedict I've ever had! Usually cafes serve sourdough with super hard crusts and is difficult to cut through, but what they used here was easily sliced with a butter knife and so tasty. I added a side of avocado and as they gave 3 pieces of bread, I got to have smashed avo on toast too 😉
