Visitors can explore paintings by Joseph Wright of Derby and learn about his renowned portrayal of the industrial revolution in the Peak District.
Great free experience in Derby. Some really interesting things to see in here, with a number of different themed rooms over 3 floors. The staff helped us out and were really friendly and welcoming! Well worth a trip

I really enjoyed my visit to Derby Museum. The archaeology section was full of interesting pieces and told the stories in a way that was easy to follow. The highlight for me was definitely Joseph Wright’s paintings, they were displayed beautifully and felt really special to see in person. The museum itself is easy to get around and has a nice mix of history and art. A great place to spend an afternoon.

Didn't know what a gem this was! Free entry for this place is mad. It has so much to see. There was art, taxidermy, ceramics, history of war room. A cafe on the ground floor too. So much to see and can easily spend a good hour or two here. The staff were pleasant and helpful, too.
Holly B — Google review
This was a fantastic museum to visit, where we went to the section about the history of transportation in Derby! The steam traction engine model is a fantastic feature alongside different trains including diesel ones too, really appreciate the model railways working here.

A fantastic little museum, lots to see even though it's only a few rooms. The artifacts from around the world were very interesting

It's one of the best places to visit It's so good size for a museum that it won't make kids tired. Everything inside it for art to stuffed animals and including Mummy Amazing please to visit

I'm surprised at the exhibitions within this museum, I took my daughters as they had there school project put up as an exhibition. The staff were really polite and friendly and we're very informative with my girls. There were many looked after artifacts, ranging from roman, Anglo saxon , Egyptian and many more, to which I was actually glued looking at.

Took 3 of our grandchildren here today. They really enjoyed it especially the army section and the mummy and the natural history section. Excellent place.. good disabled access too. Went to the cafe for hot chocolate afterwards.. Free but we gave £10 donation as these places deserve our support

Pickford's House, located in Derby's Friar Gate area, is a beautifully restored Georgian townhouse that once belonged to the renowned architect Joseph Pickford. The museum offers exhibitions on 18th-century life and historic costume, providing insight into the lives of both the wealthy residents and their servants from the 18th to 20th centuries.
Took 3of our grandchildren here today for a couple of hours during half-term. The staff were lovely and helpful..the children were fascinated seeing how people used to live. Eg washing.. toilet. Kitchen.. not with internet phones and Xbox!! Free parking free entry but we gave a donation and £1 each for the trail. Well worth it. We have taken them to all 3 of Derby museums now.

Lovely museum house/home including The Dracula returns to Derby exhibition on now! 4 stars as I'm disabled and the only access to all floors is via stone stair case with good banister! Free entry, large car park at rear, gift shop and garden.
Sarah S — Google review
The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and I was given a helpful overview on arrival. The house is a Grade I listed building and has been beautifully preserved, with original features such as the old bathtub and sink still in place, which adds to its charm. Inside the house, there is also a Dracula exhibition which is very well presented, though I have to admit it gave me quite a scare! The museum is for free!
Kathy — Google review
Very interesting museum! It's close to the center, free admission and is simply unique compared to a lot of other museums I've been to. Visually impressive displays to see. Nice small garden to relax afterwards.
Namie R — Google review
Absolutely brilliant museum, a short walk from the town centre. Interesting exhibitions including toy theatres and dracula. Set over 4 floors, with no lift but plenty of seating for a rest on each floor.
Gemma P — Google review
Lovely little museum, just down from the Friar Gate Bridge. The ground floor of the house is set out as it would have been when the Pickfords lived there. Paintings on the walls include sone by Joseph Wright Of Derby. Upstairs are theatrical items, including puppet theatres, and currently there's a Dracula exhibition commemorating 101 years since the play Dracula got its world premiere at the nearby Grand Theatre. It's free and well worth a visit.
Mike C — Google review
A wonderful Museum that allows you to step inside and step back in time. Attended as a school group and the children were in awe of the grand setting and inspired to truly imagine life in the past. We took part in a 'Time Travel Toys' workshop, which was multifaceted and engaging - providing lots of historical information alongside opportunities to build, craft and play that kept children engaged. Staff were very supportive and thoughtful of the varying needs of the class. Thank you!

Playgrounds
Markeaton Park, located near Derby, is a popular destination for families and visitors. This expansive public space spans over 207 acres and offers a variety of attractions such as craft village, gardens, boating lake, kids' play area, and sporting facilities. The park hosts numerous events throughout the year including festive celebrations with live music, Christmas crafts, and an Elf Trail competition. Additionally, it provides a glimpse into history with remnants of an old World War II army camp.
Lovely urban park on the outskirts of Derby. Visited yesterday for parkrun. Large hand standing paid car park. Only gripe is the one time I actually didn't have cash, the machines were cash only. Not everyone likes using apps. Contactless on the machine options as well please. Lovely craft center and free toilets. Would visit again

We (two families) went to the paddling pool (last weekend) and had about 30 minutes of water time. We noticed that the water was very cold and dirty, with visible mud. The bathroom facilities were also unclean, and the pool seemed overcrowded. The next day, our children—and the adults who were with them in the pool—experienced vomiting, fever, and diarrhea. This may have been caused by poor water quality. I hope this review is taken into consideration to help improve conditions, such as controlling the number of visitors, enforcing rules like requiring a shower before entering the pool, and ensuring frequent cleaning and sanitation. Otherwise, the play areas were excellent.
Jevan A — Google review
One of the best parks in the area as it has big open spaces and lots of facilities. Good flat walking areas with hard paths. Toilet facilities and a nice cafe with a beautiful outdoor seating area. They also have a limited 1 hour free parking if you need to just pop in, which is located near the shops. The triangle near the garden centre also has limited free parking, as well as the crem. The park has lots of things to do for kids, one of the biggest play areas I've seen. The paddling pool is also open in the summer, which is the best thing ever on a hot day.
Jody B — Google review
Love going here as a family. There are so many things to do. The parking itself is pretty cheap, if you're paying on the MiPermit app you're looking at about £4.70 for four hours which is very decent considering. Recommended to go with kids as the Mundy Play Centre is fantastic. There's a huge park which is great for kids of most ages (smaller section for the little ones and a huge pirate ship and some climbing areas for older ones). There's also canoes, high ropes, bouncy castles, small kids cars and inflatable slides. Most of which you do have to pay extra for, and it varies in price but overall it's relatively inexpensive for what it is. There is also a great shops in the craft centre area. Overall a fantastic day out with the whole family and you can easily spend hours there. Whether you're wanting to entertain the kids, have a picnic or just a stroll round the park
Ben — Google review
Large open space park offering a range of activities and features for all ages. Plenty of parking but is app only. Scan QR code to download app and then pay for parking. We paid £2.70 for 2hrs. There is a play area for kids and a stream for dogs to play in. Cafe and restaurant for anyone wanting to eat. Also ice cream vans. Some craft shops in centre of park. Plenty of trails and woodland to explore.
Sardev S — Google review
Lovely park with a well-maintained kids’ play area and a nice walking path. Clean, peaceful, and great for families.

It's always nice to go for a walk to the park, plenty of space for runners, bike users, there's a playground and some shops. Sunny weather really makes the park look great.

Sights & Landmarks
Kedleston Hall is a stunning neoclassical mansion located in the village of Kedleston, Derbyshire. Built in the mid-18th century, it boasts grand Palladian architecture and is surrounded by over 740 acres of picturesque parkland with lakes and walking trails. The interiors, designed by Robert Adam, showcase a remarkable collection of fine paintings and furniture. In the summer, visitors can enjoy outdoor theatre and cinema on the grounds.
Kedleston Hall is a beautiful location for walking and enjoying some time with nature. I'd thoroughly recommend getting there early to beat the crowds as on a sunny day, it does get very busy. There is good car parking and excellent facilities at the entrance. Most of the walks are clearly marked, with loads of spots to stop and sit down to take a load off, or enjoy the grounds. Excellent location for the dogs, lots of space to sniff and run around, though it is leads on throughout the site.
Steven M — Google review
I was really impressed and enjoyed our recent family visit. Lots of parking close to the Hall and grounds. We had a voucher and entered the hall/gounds for free. The hall itself is smaller than some other places such as Chatsworth but still felt big on the inside and lots of rooms to explore. A refreshing facility here were lockers for bags/possesions. This made a massive difference compared to some other places that demand no bags taken into the house, but nowhere to store them. We had our kids day bag and picnic bag and we locked them away without any worries. The staff were very polite and kind and even helped us with our possessions and didnt make us feel like naugthy children for daring to come to a place like this with bags ( take note Chatsworth ) The house has some dazzling rooms to explore and takes a good hour to take it all in. Behind the house is an amazing church which despite its small size is stunning inside with several amazing tombs and sculpures. The grounds are lovely with the addition of a childrens play area tucked away with lots of things to keep the little ones busy. There is the usual gift shop and refreshingly a book shop, which I grabbed a few items from. I cant comment on the cafe/resturant as we didnt use it but the food and decor looked very nice. There is a small coffee stand near the stables which does a very nice mocha and sells Bluebells icecream for what I thought was a very reasonable price. Overall I would definatley recommend.

The cows greet you on entry but once across the bridge, the house and setting looks like a landscape painting. In the house, it has a Rome pantheon oculus ceiling and amazing collumned room. A good bit that's easily missed is the curved corridor near the entrance with the big game heads from animals shot over 120 years ago, an insight into the days of the Raj. Could easily spend 4 hours here if you do the walks too.
Nick L — Google review
Quite the contrast to Calke Abbey. Be sure to arrive with plenty of time to tour the house as there is a LOT to see inside. The tour is self guided but volunteers are on hand to assist. Kedelston has holdings reminiscent of a Royal Palace. It is pristine on the interior. There is a cafe on the grounds that is open until 5:00 pm. So, plenty of time for a cuppa after a tour of the house. The gardens are limited, but the grounds in the back of the house are worth going out and enjoying. Flowers were still blooming in late September, but many of them were spent as well.
Barbara G — Google review
Extremely impressive house that was built for show and not actually lived in by the extremely wealthy owners who lived in a wing attached to the main house . The servants hall is the main visitor entrance and even this is grand in comparison to other large period houses. Huge rooms many with high ceilings and stunning features, decorations and furnishings etc this house just oozes money and wealth. The staff and volunteers are extremely helpful and knowledgeable and add personality to the house. Large onsite NT cafe which has a good selection of food/drinks but odd ordering system
A340 F — Google review
Great place to visit good information in the hall and good paths around the estate for wheelchairs and disabled people but very expensive food example £5 for a sausage roll seriously come on get the food prices down and £22 adults to enter you need to get it lower and you get more in I am a member of the National Trust and hear people say this

I recently attended the Diwali celebration at Kedleston Hall , courtesy of Simran Kaur Sandhu, Creative Producer — and it was one of the most enchanting cultural experiences I’ve had in the UK. From the moment I arrived, the atmosphere was warm, vibrant, and inclusive. The hall was beautifully transformed with hand-crafted marigold garlands and glowing diyas, casting a soft golden light across the grand interiors. The way traditional Indian design was woven into the neoclassical setting felt effortless — a perfect balance of heritage and celebration. Some of my favourite moments included the stunning light projections inspired by rangoli art, the interactive cultural displays, and the thoughtful details like restored lamps and traditional games that made the whole experience feel alive and personal. Felt genuinely welcoming and touched with this story. Everything felt authentic, well-researched, and deeply respectful of both cultures. It was more than an event — it was a heartfelt celebration of community, creativity, and light. I left feeling proud, inspired, and grateful to have experienced such a meaningful Diwali at such a historic venue. Truly a must-visit if you get the chance.

What a great place! The house was finished in 1765 which was intended for grand entertaining and used to display superb paintings, sculptures and furniture. Kedleston celebrates one 18th century landowners fascination with classical Rome and this can be seen and witnessed throughout the entire house

The Dining Room is an independent restaurant located at 121 Friar Gate, Derby DE1 1EX. It offers a sophisticated dining experience with a focus on classically contemporary dishes made from the best local and regional British produce. The cozy eatery features exposed-brick walls and serves fine wine and cocktails. Additionally, it provides takeaway options for those who prefer to enjoy their meals at home.
We visited today for my birthday and oh my goodness it's was brilliant. Absolutely fantastic service from a very friendly guy (didn't get his name!) from the minute we walked in. So refreshing to have a waiter who does things so well. Cocktails were lovely and well made and the birthday card was a very nice touch. We both had three courses, and finished every last bit of it all! Really delicious. My husband particularly enjoyed the Thai sweet potato soup and I absolutely loved the rump of lamb. The flavours were so fresh and delicious. Felt like a real treat to visit somewhere so lovely. Can't wait to revisit! Thank you!

Excellent gluten free food available, great choice. I had pork belly with roast vegetables and it was superb. Creme Brulee with raspberry sorbet (home made) was heaven too. Virtually everything is gluten free so coeliacs can relax and enjoy their dining experience. Highly recommended (I say that reluctantly as I'd like to keep it secret 😊 it's that good).

We visited The Diningroom for my partner’s birthday, and it was an absolutely fabulous experience from start to finish. The atmosphere was wonderfully intimate, creating a cosy, relaxed setting that made the evening feel extra special. The food was cooked to perfection. My partner enjoyed scallops to start, followed by beef for the main course. I opted for the baked camembert and plantain for my main — and even as a meat eater, I found these choices a real delight. I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest; the flavours were beautifully balanced and truly memorable. The drinks menu was equally enticing. I tried a few cocktails, with the espresso martini being particularly delicious. I also sampled the mint Baileys — not quite to my taste, but I’m always up for trying something new! All in all, it was a perfect evening: great food, excellent service, and an atmosphere that made it feel like a special occasion. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a place that feels both personal and indulgent

Amazing food, great service. Highly recommended especially for gluten free options. My vegan friend was also very happy to see something other than a vegan burger on the menu! Highly recommend the fish pie. So tasty and the fish was plentiful!

We had an amazing meal tonight for my birthday. I was surprised they took an effort to write a card and it was a very nice gesture making me feel special! The food was WOW! From starter to dessert it was all spot on and very good. The service was also amazing, staff are very accommodating and friendly. The ambiance was also very nice and the food were served very quick, it’s also reasonably priced. We would definitely come back again. I highly recommend this place! 👍🏻👌
Cherry S — Google review
Cosy i.e. it's not a big place and it is expensive as the food is not as good as it should be given the prices. Service is good although I'm not sure decanting the wine makes a lot of difference to the end taste given the time span. Coffee M/C was broken so can't comment on quality. Shame they didn't source an alternative!

Indian restaurant
Anoki Restaurant Derby offers a vibrant and stylish dining experience with a modern take on classic Indian cuisine. Located in an old picture house on London Road, the restaurant features elegant decor, including ornate furnishings beneath a gilded vaulted ceiling and opulent interiors adorned with dramatic artwork and extravagant chandeliers. The waiters dressed in traditional Indian attire add to the overall ambiance.
Drove past this restaurant a few times, of which it caught my eye because of the exterior design and the ambience of the inside. I’ve always been a fan of Indian food and this just heightened how much I enjoy it. Decided to go this afternoon and to be honest I felt a bit underdressed, it was really well set up and the atmosphere was great although there wasn’t many people there (because of the time of day we went), the service was great and to top it all off the food was nothing short of amazing 🤤 will be going back there soon for sure.

10/10 for food and service! The chilli fish was the highlight for me, definitely found my new favourite Indian! Photo does not do it justice!

A warm welcome and fantastic service by Yas. Lovely surroundings, plenty of tables and a nice menu. Food arrived quickly, was a good size portion and tasted amazing. The flavours were exceptional and there was plenty of food size chicken that was very tender. The Indian dessert was great too, with warm and cold combinations working very well. There's street parking nearby too, so made all for a great experience. Highly recommend, 10/10. I'll certainly visit again.

It was stunning from the start. As soon as we stepped foot in this beautiful restaurant, we were greeted with a beautiful welcoming feel. The food was stunning and we licked the plates clean. I highly recommend this Indian restaurant !!!!!!! The food is delicious and the atmosphere is authentic. The decor and music truly transport you to this lovely country ❣️ The service is excellent and very helpful. The boss even let us in early, me and my husband were rushing to catch a train because we were only there for a visit, and the boss let us in early, which we really appreciated because we were very hungry and with a small child. Cafe
The Bookcafé is a charming and quirky outlet located in a Grade-2 listed Victorian bank. Originally a bookshop in York, it has been situated in Derby for over a decade, now focusing on serving delicious food and drinks. The café offers an all-day breakfast and lunch menu with freshly made dishes often locally sourced. Whether you're looking for a quiet spot to read, meet friends, or enjoy homemade cakes, this family-owned restaurant provides a welcoming escape with its cozy and laid-back vibe.
I stayed in Derby for a week and tried a few different places for breakfast. I found the book cafe to be the best. Excellent quality food. Particularly enjoyed the scrambled eggs which were light and flurry. Every item on the plate was of good quality. The location of the cafe is very central and the quirky ambience adds to the experience. Only slightly marked down service as there was no table service, only order at the bar was available but that said the staff were nice and friendly. I’d gladly return to the book cafe in the future and recommend to others

Nottingham🇬🇧Bites & Books: A Cozy Escape at Book Cafe Nottingham🍴✨ Tucked away in the heart of Nottingham, Book Cafe is a delightful little haven where good food and relaxed vibes meet shelves of charm and character. 📖☕ I stopped by recently and had a truly satisfying meal featuring salt & pepper chicken, cheese toast, and Greek souvlaki. Salt & pepper chicken🐔 The perfect crunch, with just enough spice to keep things exciting. It was seasoned beautifully and served hot and crispy. The cheese toast🧀🍞 Pure comfort on a plate—crispy on the outside, gooey and rich inside. Simple, yes, but done right. Perfect for dipping or just devouring on its own. Greek souvlaki🥙 Tender, herby, and full of Mediterranean flavor. It transported me straight to a sunny Greek taverna. The pita was soft and warm, and the meat was juicy with that perfect char. ☕️Biscoff latte It is like a cookie melted into your coffee: comforting, nostalgic, and full of flavour. The subtle notes of cinnamon and brown sugar from the Biscoff complement the espresso beautifully, adding warmth without overpoweringbthe coddee’s natural richness. I think this place has become a favourite of mine, without a doubt! Never even realised it was here until earlier on today. After finishing in town, I fancied somewhere to sit and people watch for a bit, while enjoying a drink and maybe a sweet treat too. I looked at a couple of cafes close by, but The Bookcafé stood out the most to me. Well I'm glad I chose this place, because it's awesome and super quirky! A shame I didn't bring my journal with me, as it's a great place to either catch up on some writing or get stuck into a good book for a while. There were plenty of seats to choose from, so I ended up going by the window, so I could people-watch and simply enjoy the world going by. The staff were lovely, being greeted with a smile by one of the young ladies who worked there. There's a choice, to either order at the counter or from the table which is handy. It was simple to use, and you could pay through Google/Apple pay or even PayPal. The young lady I mentioned, kindly came over to inform me that they hadn't got any of the ginger cake. However, they did have a selection of other great-sounding cakes and treats. So after refreshing my memory and having a look at what they had, I went for the coffee marble cake (deliciously moist, with a subtle coffee taste... Not too overpowering!) 👌🏻I also ordered a large cappuccino and they didn't take long at all to arrive. Another lady who brought them over, was super friendly and pleasant, which just enhanced the overall experience so hats off to the staff, for being fabulous! It was nice to sit and relax, listen to the music playing and watch the world go by. Such a great place, if you're looking for somewhere to unwind for a while from the hectic world. 10/10!!

We booked The Bookcafé’s upper floor exclusively for 45 of us, our families and closest friends, for an afternoon tea straight after our wedding ceremony, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The afternoon tea was generous, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious, with more than enough for everyone. A special shout-out to the scones, which were superb and had everyone talking! The staff were wonderfully kind and attentive, looking after every detail and even letting us play our own background music. Everything ran so smoothly in this lovely venue, with real care, attention, and plenty of smiles. All our guests were delighted, and my husband and I couldn’t be happier with how it all went. Thank you for making such an important moment in our day so memorable.

Really great cafe for gluten free options. I’m not 100% sure where the name came from as there really wasn’t many books? But overall the atmosphere was quirky and cosy. I ordered the bhaji sandwich on the online ordering option. There was no option to make it gluten free apart from the notes section but the waitress was happy to swap it and it came out with a GF bun, the food itself was really tasty

I don't know what to say about this coffee shop, the atmosphere is really different in a very nice way، You order through a QR in the table, the website is kind easy and direct, but the payment, the site doesn't accept the Samsung pay, so you need to fill the card details which I really hated! The waitress that brought us our order spilt the latte, that was okay! But her leaving the mess just like that without asking, caring, or bringing extra tissue at least was so careless of her! I wanted to order the chocolate scone. A mistake happened. We ended up having the cheese one, which was so bad that I wouldn't recommend it, but after complaining, they made it for us by bringing us brownies, and that really saved the day! Thanks to the manager, I guess. She was super friendly and made sure we were satisfied. One final thing, the avocado with the eggs, was super delicious. I would really recommend it to anyone!

The Exeter Arms in Derby is a classic pub that offers a mix of traditional charm and modern amenities. Operated by the local Dancing Duck Brewery, it boasts an impressive selection of Derby brews. As the city transitions through different COVID-19 tiers, the Exeter Arms provides an inviting indoor space for gatherings as well as an award-winning beer garden for outdoor enjoyment.
Managed to get the last table available here on a Friday evening, worth booking in advance. Great menu with good vegetarian options and loads of ales. Really friendly staff that told you the wait time on food at the onset. Food was very good and reasonably priced, really great atmosphere also. Its only a short walk from the town centre and certainly worth a visit.

On a random trip to Derby we decided to eat lunch here. Great food for a good price. The portion size was good too! I would go again.

Another great meal on Friday evening. New items on the menu and the food is always good and who doesn't like a couple of pints of Aye Up!! Definitely recommend a visit 👌

I can't thank the staff enough when I thought I had lost my phone and wallet in the pub after having a wonderful meal with my family last Saturday evening. One of the staff actually chased after us to take a tel number to advise if they found anything. In fact I had left them in my hotel room

I’ve heard so much about The Wonky Table, past it a few times, read up on reviews. Last night I tried it and it did not disappoint!! Very quirky, home-feel restaurant. Limited Menu but with some great options. The food was great and the service too. Would recommend, definitely. Thank you 💫

Pretty odd experience here last night. Starter of lamb kofta was subpar, lamb had a very synthetic taste. The taste, shape and texture suggested it was from a packet. Salad was drowned out by the sauce. This made for a very unpleasant taste alongside the sharp cheese. I didn't finish this. The main was a massive dissapointment. Pork belly, with Irish champ which was absolutely swimming in grease. See picture, just look at the plate it is drenched in fat and oil and grease. There's no excuse for that at all. Got halfway through and just couldn't finish. To their credit they offered to put the desserts on the house and after some persuasion by the waitress we tried a dessert. The key lime pie was nice. The head waiter seemed to want to plant himself about a yard away from our table awkwardly. The waitresses seemed nervous around him. Not a pleasant experience at all and not one I could recommend to anyone. Giving 2 stars as they did at least attempt to correct the mains issue.
