Shinto shrine

Nestled in a serene mountain setting, Ogamiyama Shrine Okunomiya is an ancient shrine accessible via a long stone staircase. The shrine boasts the longest stone-flagged approach in Japan and is adorned with statues and monuments, offering a historical and religious experience. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil surroundings and peaceful ambiance, making it an ideal place for introspection. The shrine also serves as a starting point for ascending Mt Daisen or embarking on a picturesque hike through nature.
Very quiet and peaceful. Beautiful shrine surrounded by forest and nature. Honouring the Mountain God.

It's a short hike from the parking lot to Ogamiyama Shrine There was a sign near the first torii gate saying it was a 15-minute walk, but I think it would take about 20 to 30 minutes. You need to be prepared. The stone steps, with sunlight filtering through the trees and covered in moss, had a mystical and beautiful atmosphere. Panting, I managed to make it to the inner shrine 奥宮 and eceive a goshuin 御朱印. The climb was so difficult that receiving the goshuin was all the more moving.

Peaceful and tranquil shrine, and not crowded during weekdays. Great place to be alone with your thoughts. Recommended for beginners, just be sure to wear good footwear as the cobbled path is made of rocks and gravel. From this shrine you may begin your ascend to Mt Daisen, or another midway point that is 20 minutes up (800m trek).

Daisenji Temple is an ancient hillside temple complex dating back to the 8th century, offering stunning views of the surrounding forest and mountains. The area around the temple has been preserved as a national park, boasting a rich variety of vegetation and wildlife. Visitors can also enjoy outdoor activities such as kayaking at Akamatsu Lake, just a short drive away from the temple. The serene atmosphere of the temple makes it an ideal place for beginners to explore and take in the peaceful surroundings.
This is the stairway entrance to 大山寺。entrance fee was 300yen per person. There’s a path on the left side of the stairways that leads to another shrine . We didn’t take it as the weather was too cold. Else it would be a lovely 15mins stroll in the woods. This is probably free.

Quiet and peaceful temple, sitting on a hilltop. There is quite a climb up to the temple. From the temple, you can also climb up the stairs further to another shrine, or to begin your ascend to Mt Daisen. Recommended for beginners as it is not difficult. Be sure to make the descend before sunset as it can get dark without many lampposts.

One of my favorite places in all of the Chugoku region. Daisen-ji is a peaceful stroll through the mountain town and towards an increasingly serene respite partway up Mt. Daisen. Beautiful in any time of year.

We went during autumn and it was beautiful! Locals here are very friendly, were absolutely delighted to see our 6 yr old daughter hiking with us. Although we didn't do the summit, the walking trails offer a fantastic view of Daisen and the National Park. Daisen is indeed a chubby version of Mt Fuji. We saw some interesting bugs and moss too.

(Translated by Google) Part 12 of our historical exploration! This time, we're heading to Shimane and Tottori! We start with the first day at the Mugibanda Ruins, a vast Yayoi period site where only one-tenth of the entire site has been excavated, and I believe there's still much to discover. The weather was beautiful, so I excitedly parked my car and went to the information center, where a very friendly staff member explained the order in which to tour the area. The site is so vast, and the weather was so beautiful that I was drenched in sweat as I toured each site and entered all of the restored pit dwellings. My current obsession is the Jomon and Yayoi periods, so I cooled off in the dwellings while imagining what life was like back then (lol). The view was also beautiful, and there were benches set up at scenic spots, so I sat down and enjoyed the view. There were also plenty of insects, such as grasshoppers, giant dragonflies, and Japanese black swallowtails, making it feel like I'd traveled back in time. When I took a break at an information center when I was halfway through the trip, I asked for recommendations for nearby places, and they introduced me to Aoya Kamijichi Historical Park, which opened in March last year and was not on my list of places I had looked up in advance. I decided to save the remaining half for another time and headed to Tottori on short notice (lol). I had a great time talking about hobbies with the staff, and had a great time from the first day of the trip. I will definitely stop by to see the remaining half of the trip, so I hope to hear more fun stories from you when I do. And that brings me to the 13th installment! Continue to Aoya Kamijichi Historical Park (Original)

Nestled along the scenic Mt. Daisen Natsuyama trail, Daisenji Amidado is a historical gem that beckons travelers with its rich heritage. This temple, recognized as the oldest structure among Daisenji's buildings, dates back to the early Heian period but was relocated and rebuilt in 1552 after being devastated by a landslide in 1529.

It is the oldest building among the existing temples in Daisenji, and was destroyed by a mountain tsunami in 1529, and was rebuilt at its current location in 1552, at the end of the Muromachi period. It was originally built as a hall of worship, but when the practice ceased in the Meiji period, it came to be called a hall for enshrining Amida (Amida etc.). The principal image is a wooden seated statue of Amida Nyorai (266 cm) created by the Buddhist sculptor Ryoen in 1131. On either side of the statue are enshrined the bodhisattvas Kannon and Seishi. Both the building and the statue are nationally recognized. It has been designated as an important cultural property. Mountains
Daisen, the highest peak in the Chugoku region, is a volcanic mountain and a center of worship with a Buddhist temple. The village near the hiking trail heads offers accommodations such as Itadaki Daisen and Hotel Daisen Shirogane, along with local properties on Airbnb. While it was once a local ski hub, there are signs of new life in the town. Alternatively, visitors can stay in Yonago, the nearest large city to Daisen.
🌟 5/5 – Unforgettable Mt. Daisen Adventure! We hiked Mt. Daisen at the start of November—technically autumn, though it felt like winter at the peak! Reaching 1,709 meters with a real-feel temperature of just 3°C, we even got caught in a brief hailstorm. It was exhilarating! The climb took about 4 hours up and 2 hours down. My legs and back were sore from the ascent and carrying a backpack, but it was absolutely worth it. We had lunch in a cozy insulated hut near the summit, which was a welcome break in the cold. I went with friends and colleagues, and we took tons of amazing photos. The views, the weather, the challenge—it all made for a journey to remember. So much fun, so much laughter, and a true test of endurance. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a thrilling autumn hike!
Carlo S — Google review
2.5-3 hours to the summit (with a tea break in between) and the path is mostly well maintained. In mid-November, it was quite snowy and slippery from around the attitude of 1,600m. The autumn leaves were quite nice below 700-800m I would say... We liked the small shelter at the top of the mountain where we (and most of the people) had quick lunch break.
Aya M — Google review
Very well-maintained trail and many people climb up the path to the top. I would recommend bringing some bug spray, sunscreen, and water.

It is hard for beginners to climb and descend Daisen, but the viewing is so beautiful.
J L — Google review
Tough hike. About 900m elevation, stairs all the way. Couple of different routes. Infrequent buses from Yonago so get your timing right. I took the 9.30 bus and only just made the 3.20 return if I had missed it would have been a 3 hour wait so probably better to take the earlier bus.
Team F — Google review
It took some time to climb this mountain, but the reward - beautiful view is well worth!
Bohuslav Š — Google review
The highest point in the Chugoku region of Japan. Not very high@ 1710 meters but the elevation change of nearly 1000 meters and very few flat areas makes this climb strenuous. There is a never ending set of stairs/rocks until the view opens up around 1600 meter mark and from there you gradually walk up to the summit on a wooden board (you cannot get off the board as it is a protected area). I did the climb on a dog day summer afternoon and the summit was still crowded. The actual summit (1729 meters) is closed for the regular visitors because it is a very dangerous walk on a very thin ridge barely the width of your shoulders. The more adventurous people take the back side route but I wouldn't advise it and you would be crazy to even think of attempting it alone. (check Youtube for videos) It took me 3 hours to reach the summit but I can do the same route on a cooler day in 2.5 hours. The descent took me 2 hours. Carry lots of water in Summers or get ready to shell out lots of Yens for water at the hut on top. No toilets between the parking lot and summit. If you prefer clean toilets, do your thing in the toilets of the parking lot. Like most mountains in Japan, there were a lot of a over prepared trekkers but I would suggest keeping things as light as possible especially in Summers. I come from a very hot place but even I was surprised by the profuse sweating that I experienced. I would recommend this hike but please get there early because the parking lots near the trail are usually full by 0700AM after which you have to park quite far from the trail (add another 40-50 minutes to the time).
Vinayak B — Google review
Great hike took us just over 2 hours to get to the top took the Natsuyama Trial up and the Motodani Valley trail down. The trail is very steep but well marked. Unfortunately it was quite foggy at the top but the midpoint view and temples in the way down made it very worth it!

I ordered Daigo udon, mini tempura bowl, shrimp tempura udon, and small shrimp tempura bowl. The low voice of the lady taking the order also irritated me as I had to wait. I just ate Sanuki udon in Kagawa the other day, so I can't compare it, but I was disgusted by how bad the texture of the udon was. (Translated by Google) I've been going there for 40 years, and it would be unfair to compare it to back then, but a few years ago, when I ordered cold udon, it had a dry texture, so I started ordering only hot udon. One day, two of us went in and ordered the same "Miyama Udon", but the waiter first delivered one and then went straight to the kitchen without saying a word to deliver the "Daigo Udon" to the customer sitting next to us. Even though he passed in front of our table, he didn't even say "Please wait a little longer". After a while, he brought the remaining "Miyama Udon" whispering "Sorry to keep you waiting". I felt that it would have been better to deliver the "Daigo Udon" to the customer first, and then deliver ours later and deliver the "Miyama Udon" at the same time! At the time, the restaurant had just opened, and there were two groups of two people, including us, and two groups of single diners. I couldn't help but imagine what it would be like if it was crowded at night.

When I come to Daigo, I always order: ◉ Daigo Udon ◉ Mini Tempura Bowl The bonito broth complements the handmade udon perfectly. It's quite filling, so I'd be satisfied with just the Daigo Udon, but I always like to finish off with a mini tempura bowl. lol Thank you for the meal today♪ (Original) 10:30オープン すでに沢山のお客様!

Restaurant
Nestled in the charming Daisen town area, Sunset Cafe offers a delightful escape for food lovers and nature enthusiasts alike. While it may not accept credit cards for its famous shaved ice, the rich flavors of their sauces make every bite worthwhile. The cafe's interior is adorned with captivating cards showcasing Mt. Daisen and local attractions, available through a small donation—an inviting touch!
Came here for lunch after a snow walk to the temple and doing hot spring. The restaurant is a perfect rest place, while waiting for the public bus. The burger is delicious and coffee is great. Cosy environment with chill music

Best pork burger after I hiked from Mount Daisen. The fries is so tasty and not like normal fries we get from Mc Donald. The nugget also hand made by the restaurant. Atmosphere restaurant is great. It provide indoor and outdoor dining.

Absolutely wonderful burger and lovely space to wait for the bus. At Tokyo prices it's like McDonalds. Pay in advance. Beeper tells you when you have to pick up your food. Clean the table yourself. Beer came with the burger 30 minutes after I ordered. No idea of hospitality No wonder all the Japanese inns in this village are literally falling down and abandoned. No service mind.

Good choice of burgers. But only one (chicken burger) for people who don’t eat beef. The food is okay, but the views during sunset are amazing.

(Translated by Google) When my husband came to Komorebito to climb Mt. Daisen, he said, "It was the most delicious hamburger I've ever eaten." The hamburger was so big I wondered if it was dinner. I used a knife and fork. I chose the tomato and cheese hamburger with spicy sauce. You get a ¥50 discount when you order a drink set, so I went with ginger ale. (I ended up having a cafe latte at a convenience store on the way...) But it was a perfect complement to the spicy seasoning, and I was delighted. The French fries were the equivalent of a whole potato. (Sorry, the photo only shows a few left.) The bread was delicious, and it was almost too good to eat in a tourist area. The hotel on the upper floors was beautiful, and I thought it would be nice to have dinner here. (However, the hotel was quite expensive, so I gave up.) It was a self-service restaurant, so I gave the service a ✩3 rating. The view was amazing, so I recommend it on a clear day. It was a weekday and lunchtime had long passed, so we were able to enjoy a special seat.

Nestled near the base of Mt. Daisen, DaisenKan is a charming inn that exudes a nostalgic vibe reminiscent of traditional training camps. Ideal for both climbers and skiers, this cozy retreat offers comfortable accommodations at an affordable price, with meals available upon request. Guests rave about the delicious Genghis Khan dinner served here, perfect for replenishing energy after a day on the slopes or trails.
The shower room is not good and so small. You had better to go to another spa near this hotel. The meal was delicious. You might be satisfied.

(Translated by Google) I used it for climbing Mt. Daisen. The inn is a good old inn. It feels like a nostalgic training camp. The children were happy to learn about the know-how of climbing Mt. Daisen, and the children were provided with complimentary food as well. I could take a bath anytime, so it was nice to be able to sweat off after climbing. I ate Genghis Khan after feeling tired and was able to recover considerably. thank you very much. (Translated by Google) Although the building is old, the inn is located next to the Montbell Oyama store and is run by a couple who feel at home. Used by mountain climbers and skiers. I used it for skiing this time. Although the lift is a little far away, it's not a problem at all compared to going from home. There is also a parking lot next to the inn. We are thankful that there is a ski storage room, drying room, and tune-up table in the basement. For dinner, you could choose between hot pot and Genghis Khan, and most of us ate Genghis Khan. We also have Genghis Khan. It's delicious! I will use it again as the price is low \(^o^)/ (Original)

(Translated by Google) Used for overnight stay. Room without meals: 5,500 yen. Plus meal costs. Dinner was Genghis Khan. It's just delicious. The people at the inn are very kind and polite, so you can feel at ease. It was on the 3rd floor so there were stairs. The slippers were old and almost slippery. A sink like a forest school. The toilets are warm, new and clean. The room is on the Montbell side and has no view. I can't watch TV because the signal is bad. Hot water is boiled in the hallway, so feel free to bring it with you. There is also a microwave and refrigerator. In the morning, you can have a rice ball bento made for you. (Instead of breakfast) I go up the mountain with it. I'm glad that I can use the bath after coming down from the mountain. It's hot and feels good! You can also park your car there. You can pay when you return. Maximum convenience. The only thing is that the rice ball bento was not salty enough. I would like to request improvements. (Translated by Google) I stayed at this inn because it was the closest to Mt. Daisen's Natsuyama trailhead. The building is dilapidated and you can only stay here without meals. To make matters worse, the hostess' customer service attitude was very bad. master? He walked past the guest without saying hello and went back to his room. The bath is too hot and small. What do you mean by 6000 yen per night? I will never use it again. Not recommended for people who are concerned about old odors. Washrooms and toilets are shared. The hallway is dark. The bath is on the first floor and can accommodate about 3 people. It's not a hot spring. There is Gouenyuin in the immediate vicinity, so we recommend that.
