🌟 5/5 – Unforgettable Mt. Daisen Adventure! We hiked Mt. Daisen at the start of November—technically autumn, though it felt like winter at the peak! Reaching 1,709 meters with a real-feel temperature of just 3°C, we even got caught in a brief hailstorm. It was exhilarating! The climb took about 4 hours up and 2 hours down. My legs and back were sore from the ascent and carrying a backpack, but it was absolutely worth it. We had lunch in a cozy insulated hut near the summit, which was a welcome break in the cold. I went with friends and colleagues, and we took tons of amazing photos. The views, the weather, the challenge—it all made for a journey to remember. So much fun, so much laughter, and a true test of endurance. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a thrilling autumn hike!
2.5-3 hours to the summit (with a tea break in between) and the path is mostly well maintained. In mid-November, it was quite snowy and slippery from around the attitude of 1,600m. The autumn leaves were quite nice below 700-800m I would say... We liked the small shelter at the top of the mountain where we (and most of the people) had quick lunch break.
Very well-maintained trail and many people climb up the path to the top. I would recommend bringing some bug spray, sunscreen, and water.
It is hard for beginners to climb and descend Daisen, but the viewing is so beautiful.
Tough hike. About 900m elevation, stairs all the way. Couple of different routes. Infrequent buses from Yonago so get your timing right. I took the 9.30 bus and only just made the 3.20 return if I had missed it would have been a 3 hour wait so probably better to take the earlier bus.
It took some time to climb this mountain, but the reward - beautiful view is well worth!
The highest point in the Chugoku region of Japan. Not very high@ 1710 meters but the elevation change of nearly 1000 meters and very few flat areas makes this climb strenuous. There is a never ending set of stairs/rocks until the view opens up around 1600 meter mark and from there you gradually walk up to the summit on a wooden board (you cannot get off the board as it is a protected area). I did the climb on a dog day summer afternoon and the summit was still crowded. The actual summit (1729 meters) is closed for the regular visitors because it is a very dangerous walk on a very thin ridge barely the width of your shoulders. The more adventurous people take the back side route but I wouldn't advise it and you would be crazy to even think of attempting it alone. (check Youtube for videos) It took me 3 hours to reach the summit but I can do the same route on a cooler day in 2.5 hours. The descent took me 2 hours. Carry lots of water in Summers or get ready to shell out lots of Yens for water at the hut on top. No toilets between the parking lot and summit. If you prefer clean toilets, do your thing in the toilets of the parking lot. Like most mountains in Japan, there were a lot of a over prepared trekkers but I would suggest keeping things as light as possible especially in Summers. I come from a very hot place but even I was surprised by the profuse sweating that I experienced. I would recommend this hike but please get there early because the parking lots near the trail are usually full by 0700AM after which you have to park quite far from the trail (add another 40-50 minutes to the time).
Great hike took us just over 2 hours to get to the top took the Natsuyama Trial up and the Motodani Valley trail down. The trail is very steep but well marked. Unfortunately it was quite foggy at the top but the midpoint view and temples in the way down made it very worth it!

Very quiet and peaceful. Beautiful shrine surrounded by forest and nature. Honouring the Mountain God.
It's a short hike from the parking lot to Ogamiyama Shrine 大神山神社. There was a sign near the first torii gate saying it was a 15-minute walk, but I think it would take about 20 to 30 minutes. You need to be prepared. The stone steps, with sunlight filtering through the trees and covered in moss, had a mystical and beautiful atmosphere. Panting, I managed to make it to the inner shrine 奥宮 and eceive a goshuin 御朱印. The climb was so difficult that receiving the goshuin was all the more moving.
Peaceful and tranquil shrine, and not crowded during weekdays. Great place to be alone with your thoughts. Recommended for beginners, just be sure to wear good footwear as the cobbled path is made of rocks and gravel. From this shrine you may begin your ascend to Mt Daisen, or another midway point that is 20 minutes up (800m trek).
Great Shinto shrine in Japan. This shrine has sacred atmosphere. Old shrine buildings are impressive!
Long flight of stone steps, flanked by old pine trees. The autumn colours were gorgeous.
Very beautiful shrine! Please don't skip this when you go to Daisenji Temple!
Beautiful view of the mountains and pretty hike up in the winter.

This is the stairway entrance to 大山寺。entrance fee was 300yen per person. There’s a path on the left side of the stairways that leads to another shrine . We didn’t take it as the weather was too cold. Else it would be a lovely 15mins stroll in the woods. This is probably free.
Great ancient Buddhist temple in Japan. Old Buddhist statues are impressive.
A very beautiful nd silent vintage. Snowing surprisedly.
Quiet and peaceful temple, sitting on a hilltop. There is quite a climb up to the temple. From the temple, you can also climb up the stairs further to another shrine, or to begin your ascend to Mt Daisen. Recommended for beginners as it is not difficult. Be sure to make the descend before sunset as it can get dark without many lampposts.
Went in the autumn. Not as crowded as other more popular temples. Reading the other comments, I agree that this temple can be beautiful in all seasons.
Quiet and peaceful temple on a hilltop. Beautiful view!Recommended for the sunny day, there is quite a climb up to the temple.
One of my favorite places in all of the Chugoku region. Daisen-ji is a peaceful stroll through the mountain town and towards an increasingly serene respite partway up Mt. Daisen. Beautiful in any time of year.
We went during autumn and it was beautiful! Locals here are very friendly, were absolutely delighted to see our 6 yr old daughter hiking with us. Although we didn't do the summit, the walking trails offer a fantastic view of Daisen and the National Park. Daisen is indeed a chubby version of Mt Fuji. We saw some interesting bugs and moss too.

It's a nice place to walk around and the pit dwelling reconstructions are cool to see full sized and in context. The views from the park are also quite lovely.
don't forget the pass
Decent place to walk around and see some old house replicas.
I love this place ! Feel so ancient surrounding us 😇💪🏽
(Translated by Google) Part 12 of our historical exploration! This time, we're heading to Shimane and Tottori! We start with the first day at the Mugibanda Ruins, a vast Yayoi period site where only one-tenth of the entire site has been excavated, and I believe there's still much to discover. The weather was beautiful, so I excitedly parked my car and went to the information center, where a very friendly staff member explained the order in which to tour the area. The site is so vast, and the weather was so beautiful that I was drenched in sweat as I toured each site and entered all of the restored pit dwellings. My current obsession is the Jomon and Yayoi periods, so I cooled off in the dwellings while imagining what life was like back then (lol). The view was also beautiful, and there were benches set up at scenic spots, so I sat down and enjoyed the view. There were also plenty of insects, such as grasshoppers, giant dragonflies, and Japanese black swallowtails, making it feel like I'd traveled back in time. When I took a break at an information center when I was halfway through the trip, I asked for recommendations for nearby places, and they introduced me to Aoya Kamijichi Historical Park, which opened in March last year and was not on my list of places I had looked up in advance. I decided to save the remaining half for another time and headed to Tottori on short notice (lol). I had a great time talking about hobbies with the staff, and had a great time from the first day of the trip. I will definitely stop by to see the remaining half of the trip, so I hope to hear more fun stories from you when I do. And that brings me to the 13th installment! Continue to Aoya Kamijichi Historical Park (Original)

incredible people and time at a great price. highly recommend if you're in Tottori to check it out. the snow is perfect and the people working are so kind and helpful.
I'm sure this resort is great when all the lifts are open but when we went there were only 3 lifts open. One of them we had to hike to get to. The morning was very icy but when the snow started to melt the snow got better. Pretty fun though and also getting the chance to ski in Japan (It's way different from my local resort)
There are many different trails and tracks, suitable for everyone from beginner to experienced, even cross country skiing. Also a good number of restaurants and ski rentals are available on the mountain. You don’t need to carry them up if you feel lazy. If you love skiing/snowboarding, get the 2 day pass.
My first ski experience, and it was fun! We fell and rolled many times, but we laughed and enjoyed! Great memories!
Was kind of difficult to get started. Drove, parked, shuttle bus, walked through village, then access ski lift, slide down slope to ticket machine. Took over an Hour after parking. The slopes were decent, very spacious but each area is separated and you have to walk to each area. The restaurant also got very crowded, impossible to find a seat 12-1pm. But I enjoyed it, still the best resort in Tottori.
Amazing places, The first time of my life . The wonderful time & that was amazing relaxing place.
Very small, poorly groomed but you can have fun here. The lift closers this year can only spell trouble for the future of this place.
Excellent value for money. Discounted lift passes for foreigners. One of the best resorts in the chugoku region. Highly recommend.

(Translated by Google) It's no good if you don't go here quickly. On Saturdays and Sundays, the place is full by 7 o'clock. The advantage of this location is that it is close to the Natsuyama trailhead. However, there is a large parking lot nearby, so you don't have to worry. There are also many clean restrooms near the parking lot. On the return trip after the summit, if you are descending from Gyojadani towards Ogamiyama Shrine Okumiya (Gyoja trailhead), the large parking lot is closer. I chose that. Since you will be taking a day trip to the hot spring ♨️ and buying souvenirs, a large parking lot is more convenient. Anyway, my legs will be shaking on the way home, so I think it's better to be closer! After! Please grab a pebble 🪨 from the parking lot and climb up. And please leave it at the top of the mountain! These are pebbles that have fallen from climbing mountains. It means returning it to the mountain. 🙏
(Translated by Google) This is the closest parking lot to the summer mountain trail. It's free during the snow-free season, but a fee applies from the end of December to early March when the ski resort opens. I believe it's 1,000 yen per day. The parking lot fills up early on weekends and holidays, so it's best to arrive by 6:00 AM at the latest, but even then, you might not be able to find a parking spot. Even on weekdays, the parking lot gets fairly busy, and in some cases, it can fill up after 8:00 AM. When I arrived just before 8:00 AM on Thursday, October 9, 2025, it was about half full, but by 8:30 AM, it was about 70% full. The parking lot slopes from the entrance to the back, and cars must be parked perpendicular to the slope. This means that if you sleep in your car, you'll end up sleeping sideways, which isn't very comfortable. If you plan to sleep in your car and hike the next morning, the Bakuroza parking lot is flatter and more comfortable. It's a slightly longer walk, but it's only about five minutes, so I don't think it's a big deal. Also, I think the water in the hand-washing bowls in the public toilets at Nankogawara was not drinkable, but I don't think there was any sign saying so at Bakuroza. However, it's safer to bring your own drinking water such as mineral water. The general rule to access the hiking trail is to head from the parking lot entrance towards the Natsuyama hiking trail entrance, but there is also a shortcut that runs from the back of the parking lot to below Amida Hall on the Natsuyama hiking trail.

There is a climbing notification submission box. One thing to keep in mind when it snows is that the area to the right of the entrance is covered with tall trees, and as the temperature rises, the snow and ice on the branches will fall rapidly. (Translated by Google) It is located just off the Daisen Natsuyama trail. It is the oldest building among the existing temples in Daisenji, and was destroyed by a mountain tsunami in 1529, and was rebuilt at its current location in 1552, at the end of the Muromachi period. It was originally built as a hall of worship, but when the practice ceased in the Meiji period, it came to be called a hall for enshrining Amida (Amida etc.). The principal image is a wooden seated statue of Amida Nyorai (266 cm) created by the Buddhist sculptor Ryoen in 1131. On either side of the statue are enshrined the bodhisattvas Kannon and Seishi. Both the building and the statue are nationally recognized. It has been designated as an important cultural property. The hall is open to the public only on the 18th of every month from March to December (9:00-16:00).

This was such a beautiful place to see the wisteria in full bloom without any crowds! The walk from Nawa Station was not too tiring nor steep and, even though the buses and trains were quite infrequent, it was worth it. The mornings seem to be the best time to visit, with only a handful of people around 9am. It was nice because I could take pictures without worrying. Overall, such a lovely and quiet place to visit.
Nice place to see wisteria/fuji flower But you should check the status of flower before coming because the matsuri time is not always same as full blooming time. Best time to see might be from middle to end of April
