Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Magdeburg Cathedral, the oldest Gothic cathedral in Germany, is a must-see landmark in the charming city of Magdeburg. The Protestant place of worship was completed in 1520 and boasts a stunning late Romanesque-Gothic style with Renaissance sculptures and carvings. It defines the city's skyline and houses a vast collection of paintings and sculptures from different eras.
The Magdeburg Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of Saints Catherine and Maurice, is a true gem of Gothic architecture and one of the most remarkable landmarks in eastern Germany. Rising majestically in the heart of Magdeburg, its soaring towers and detailed stonework make it an unforgettable sight even from a distance. But beyond its architectural brilliance lies a serene and deeply spiritual atmosphere that captivates all who enter. Walking through its grand doors, you’re immediately surrounded by silence and awe. The vast interior, with its high vaulted ceilings, towering columns, and colorful stained-glass windows, creates a sense of reverence and peace. Light streams softly through the windows, painting the ancient stone with hues of red, blue, and gold. The silence is not empty, but full a space where one can reflect, pray, or simply breathe in the beauty of the sacred. The cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a historical monument. It holds the tomb of Emperor Otto I, the first Holy Roman Emperor, adding a layer of imperial history to its spiritual depth. Each sculpture, altar, and corner tells a story, connecting visitors to centuries of faith, art, and culture. Outside, the cathedral’s grounds offer equally peaceful surroundings, perfect for a quiet stroll or a moment of contemplation. Whether you’re drawn by faith, history, or an appreciation for art and architecture, the Magdeburg Cathedral offers a soul stirring experience. It stands as a reminder of the power of human creativity and spiritual devotion, a place where past and present, heaven and earth, beautifully meet.

Pretty church, the time we come in just has people speech, and then the organ play music. This area rear has Asia people, they speak Germany for sure, so I can’t really understand inside cultural relics. Plus you have to pay 2 euro if you want to take photos, so I put my cell phone ( translator) in bag. Buy post cards instead.

Magdeburg is a charming city with a rich history and a pleasant atmosphere for visitors. Known for its impressive Gothic Magdeburg Cathedral (Dom zu Magdeburg), it’s a must-visit for anyone interested in architecture and history. The Elbe River adds a serene vibe to the city, perfect for riverside walks. The city combines medieval charm with modern amenities, offering great parks like the Elbauenpark and cultural sites such as the Jahrtausendturm. It’s not too crowded, making it an ideal destination for a peaceful yet enriching experience in Germany.
Rodrigo M — Google review
No tickets for entering but if you want to take photo there is a 2 euro fee.
Marcin B — Google review
If you’re a history fan, you’re going to love this place. The stories about the history of the cathedral itself and King Otto are interesting. But for those who are more amazed by architectures, not really a bucket-list material. But I guess you’ll drop by because this is the no.1 sightseeing spot in Magdeburg. Oh by the way, it’s two euros to take photos inside. I would consider this as a donation to maintain this robust structure. Enjoy!
Ji L — Google review
The place is really good. There are two nearby houses on which vines and Ivy has grown which looks really amazing. The Elbe river is just 100 meter's from this Cathedral. One can walk along the bank of the Elbe river too. There are many nearby good restaurants too and the tram station is near too. One can reach the Cathedral within 10 minutes from the nearest tram station.

Huge. Dark. Impressive. Beautiful. A must-see when visiting Magdeburg. The high towers are a landmark that can be seen from far away already. Go inside and get lost beneath the perfectly crafted gothic construction which reaches high up into the sky. If you get lucky you might be hearing the organist doing some rehearsals.

Grand Cathedral. Have some ongoing renovations but majestic.

Park
Amusement park
Elbauenpark is a stunning 104-hectare nature park nestled in the heart of Magdeburg, often celebrated as the city's green lungs. This vibrant oasis offers an array of attractions that cater to families and nature enthusiasts alike. Visitors can explore beautifully designed gardens, engaging playgrounds, and educational paths that promote environmental awareness among younger guests.
It's an absolutely lovely park. The best vacation destination with a serene setting. It's suitable for both walking and jogging. Come in the evening to find serenity. The presence of trees and birds creates a peaceful and calm setting. 😎.
VIRAL A — Google review
A nice park to visit. It's relatively wheelchair friendly. The bridge over the road might be too steep for some. There's a very steep slope in the back of the butterfly house (which is very nice), my power wheelchair couldn't do it. If you want to avoid the slope, turn around when the path next to the fish pond goes down. The tower is not accessible. Only the ground floor can be visited. I had not read on the website, that a part of the exhibition was about ancient Egypt. Nice surprise, as I'm interested in Egyptology. We visited the park with two teenagers. The Toboggan run was their favorite (€ 2,50 p.p). We didn't have enough time to see everything in an afternoon, the park is large. It didn't help that people turned signs with arrows around because they easily could.
M D — Google review
The park is quite large, and there’s a lot of walking involved unless you take the train. Since it was raining, not all the children’s attractions were open (the trampoline park, for example, requires a separate fee). On the grounds, there is the Jahrtausendturm, which involved a good climb to the top, and then we came down through the inside. We explored the most important points in human history. The exhibition is very impressive and educational for children as well. We spent about 2 hours in the tower. The butterfly house is at the other end of the park, and it was fascinating to see the different butterflies there. The kids didn’t get bored and are already eager to come back. We walked about 7.5 km.
Rainis K — Google review
Absolutely calm, wonderful place to visit and specially on sunny days. The park is clean and well maintained. The Millennium Tower is a huge testament to historical events and a eye-catching sight. Although I've visited when most of the facilities were closed/limited due to restrictions, I can imagine this place being lively and beaming with people in normal times. Definitely worth a fun day with family/friends.
Shubhankar V — Google review
Excellent for family or couples, picnics, day out or just a stroll. Children enjoy the slides and play area. Bigger children might find museum interesting.
Asim R — Google review
The entrance ticket is pretty cheap. With a student ID, you can buy the discount one day ticket for €5,50 or a green ticket for €3,00. I do recommend buying the one day ticket, where you can enjoy the top view of the millennium tower as well as other exhibitions. Most important of all, you can ride the park express and enjoy the park itself ❤️
Elizabeth S — Google review
Very big and nice park with lots to do! For 9€ you can go to butterfly house, museum and explore stuff in the park: maze, animals, roses, playgrounds and more. We’re 25/26 y.o. and had so much fun!!
Romy C — Google review
Our main destination of this trip. The park is beautiful but we took 1 hour to find the right entrance, and we weren’t the only family lost, we were 3 families trying to get into the park. A rainy Sunday where you couldn’t find a coffee or any place to eat. We had to leave the park to go to lunch, loosing the option we paid to visit the butterfly house because the staff said is only one time use ticket. Really disappointed

Art museum
Nestled in the heart of Magdeburg, the Green Citadel stands as a testament to the visionary creativity of Austrian artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. This whimsical building, located just a short stroll from key landmarks like the state parliament and Cathedral Square, showcases Hundertwasser's signature style both inside and out. Visitors can explore its vibrant courtyards, dine at delightful restaurants or cafes, and browse through various shops.
A nice building complex with a couple of restaurants inside. There are more than two entrances and they sell crazy good ice cream 🙂
Sofía G — Google review
A truly unique architectural gem in Magdeburg, designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser and completed in 2005, shortly after his death. The building breaks away from conventional architecture with its irregular forms and rooftop gardens. While visually striking, the interior spaces—especially the shops and hotel—could benefit from more curated content that reflects Hundertwasser’s philosophy. In many ways, it feels like a cousin to Gaudí’s works in Barcelona, though on a much smaller and more commercial scale.
Mousa M — Google review
It’s a very special building, several shops, cofe shop on the first floor. If you want to go to the top, have to buy ticket at information place and people bring you inside every hour. We don’t have time this trip, but only the ground floor, very interesting shops a lot!
Lily C — Google review
What a beautiful building! Walked around the outside and went into the inside gardens. Stunning!
Guðrún F — Google review
Amazing building that despite its weirdness fits amazingly well in to the historic buildings nearby. A coincidence seeing it as we more or less stumbled across it while stopping in Magdeburg for lunch. It is well worth a detour if you're not to far away.
Rita O — Google review
A beautiful architectural masterpiece by Hundertwasser. Fascinating, unique, something you have to see. Variety of shapes. Use the tour with a guide to get complete information. Nice cafe and shops.
MK — Google review
Special architecture - on the fridge magnets found in souvenir shops. Possible to go around and into the courtyard.
Peter J — Google review
We took the tour (which was almost hourly during the weekend) which was surprisingly interesting. We learned a lot of cool and interesting facts about Hundertwasser and got to explore the different rooftop areas of the building. The Japanese restaurant on the ground floor is also worth a stop :)

The Jahrtausendturm, a striking cone-shaped structure located in Elbauenpark, stands tall at 60 meters and is celebrated as one of the tallest wooden buildings globally. This architectural marvel was constructed to mark the new millennium and features a unique exterior ramp leading to an observation platform. Inside, visitors can embark on a fascinating journey through time across five floors, exploring 6,000 years of scientific advancement—from Ancient Egyptian mathematics to Medieval medicine and Renaissance inventions like the telescope.
This is an educational trip , even for an couple like us . There is alot to be learnt in the sciences. Theories and simple examples for one to understand them and put to effect. It's also very educational for the kids . Take note that if you plan to visit this sight we would suggest that you use public transport as its easily accessible that way as parking lots are quite a distance away .
Edward R — Google review
I should warn you that this place hooks you in soon as you enter the door. The building is interesting looking but the real magic are the history lessons that you learn and also get to test them out. I don't want to give it away but it's worth more than how much pay. Suitable for both adults and children alike. I would recommend it fully.
Carl — Google review
The tallest wooden building in Europe. I bought the ticket to enter the park, and took the electric car to get there. A beautiful scene can be seen from the top, which is reached after climbing 243 steps or 450 meters on the exterior ramp. This 60-meter-tall structure in the Elbauenpark is shaped like an unusual cone. The Jahrtausendturm's interior is home to an exhibition that spans five floors and 6,000 years of human history, tracing the evolution of science. With each new level, you will advance through history, beginning with Ancient Egyptian mathematics and continuing through Medieval medicine, Renaissance mechanics and alchemy, and modern inventions like the telescope and printing press.

Nice science museum with hands on experiments and a great view from the top.
Martin B — Google review
It's very nice for a visit but difficult to get to. You need to enter the Elbauenpark and walk for a while to get here, so it's a good idea to combine this with other activities in the park.
Nielsa S — Google review
The museum is really great, interactive and interesting. The bag part..We went in a Sunday rainy day and the museum was very cold and there was no place to have a coffee. Freezing
Ma B — Google review
It's a wonderful wooden architecture with the inside showcasing the history of science and civilizations. A must visit place!
TASNUBA T — Google review
Good place to visit but google map doesn’t show correct way to enter it!! The entrance is too far from what google map shows!!! Shaped like an irregular cone, this edifice in the Elbauenpark was built for the new millennium and at 60 metres high is one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world. Inside, on five floors the Jahrtausendturm has an exhibition chronicling the development of science across 6,000 years of human history. With each new level you’ll jump forward in time, starting on the ground floor with Ancient Egyptian mathematics, and moving through Medieval medicine, Renaissance mechanics and alchemy and inventions like the telescope and printing press. The fourth floor shows all the discoveries of the Early Modern Age, like electricity, stellar parallax, radio, while the fifth is about science in the 21st century. At the top, after 243 steps or 450 metres on the exterior ramp there’s a scenic viewpoint.

Nestled in the heart of Saxony-Anhalt, Zoo Magdeburg is a delightful family destination that has been captivating visitors since its inception in 1950. Spanning an impressive 16 hectares, this well-maintained zoo showcases over 200 species of animals, including rare and exotic creatures. One of its standout features is the Madagascar house and a charming penguin enclosure that adds to the allure.
Great place to see (not only) with children. Parking 4€ per 24hours paid at the ticket office.

This is a fantastic Zoo. It is way bigger than you would think. A lot of animals to see here. It is clean and a good time for families and friends. The dholes were especially cute. And we could basically sit directly next to the Tiger (glass between of course). Would recommend 11/10.

A fantastic ZOO in the corner of Magdeburg. Very clean and nice looking. On every alley there is something to see. You can see here a lot of diffrent animals. Elephants, tiger, lions, pinguins, a LOT of birds, squirells, wild cats, hyenas, etc. Really nice place to visit. In October 2024 cost of normal ticket was 18,50e. Big Parking near Zoo entrance for 4e (all day). In ZOO You can find toilets and a restaurant. If You want to see everything You need around 3 to 5 hours depends on how fast You walk. Really nice ZOO!

Small zoo but packed with plenty of animals kids will want to see. (Lions, Tigers, Hippo, Rhino, Giraffe, Elephant etc.) Perfect with small kids as it can be completed in approx. 1.5-2 hours.
Luke S — Google review
This is a small zoo. However, they have a good collection of animals, and there are several facilities for wild birds. The zoo is surrounded by a natural park where you can travel free of cost. However, to see the animal section, you must have to pay some penny. Currently, the general cost is around 10 to 18 euros per person. It can vary.
Efaz A — Google review
I really enjoyed visiting this zoo! Beautiful view, lot of animals, bathrooms all over the place (that's an advantage) restaurant available! You can even get a closer view to some animals into their cages, that was awesome! I highly recommend it!
Jacqueline E — Google review
Animals have small cots and paddocks. It was sad to see some animals just run in circles as they simply don’t have space. I believe that animals are taken care of well enough as all of them look healthy, active and all. Wish they had more space. Overall, the zoo is good: accessible, has goats to pet, and very green. In the summer/spring it should be much better
Evgeny ( — Google review
I was impressed about the place. So many animals and birds, a lot to see. Also, there are interactive ways to see the animals. You can spend all day here and not get bored. I recommend it especially for families.

Eat here once with my partner. My food was good, but the meat for my partner was overcooked, so it did not taste well. The waitress seemed very impatient, after dinner we asked for menu for desserts, she only brought one for my partner and she only talked to my partner. I did not feel like eating anything.

Tips can only be paid in cash (to all card payers 😉) (Original) Kleine, schöne Lokalität mit leckerer Hausmannskost. Die Weihnachtsspezialitäten waren sehr schmackhaft. Trinkgeld kann man nur bar bezahlen (an alle Kartenzahler 😉)
