Walked up the 418 steps to the view point - the café wasn’t open, but the view is free. Loads of great views and there are plenty of additional walks along the hillside to explore. The steps were great fun and passed quickly - quite easy to climb and some fun numbering keep you informed as you go. Well worth the climb.
A must do when in Ålesund. You get the classic view of the city. Most spectacular in a fine day but be careful on the steps in wet and stormy or icy conditions. My recommendation is to go up the stairs from Byparken (The town park) and the to come down the little used track that starts about 100m past the restaurant. It is much more peaceful and is more gently on the knees apart from the last steps.
2023/Jun, we drive from Kristiansund through Atlantic road cross several islands and did some stops and photo taking then arrive in Alesund. The second day we drive around city ,harbor and country side. Close noon time,we drive up to the top hill to enjoy the 360 degree view of beautiful Alesund sitting around by sea and cruise ships with her beautiful color houses. Later we enjoy lunch and wind in a restaurants beside sea and colorful houses, it may tell the spectaculars and specialties and beauty of Alesund.
You don’t need to buy any tickets here. If you want to go to the top, there’s a restaurant where you can have some drinks or food and enjoy the view from inside, or you can go outside to the top. But it’s better to experience the view from outside. I don’t need to explain it the view speaks for itself. It’s even better if you take some drinks with you
It is the the highest point inside the town to watch it from above. Amazing forests and paths to walk and enjoy the view. From the top you can get a 360 view. It is interesting to discover and walk through some tunnels scattered in the area. You can go there through the 400 steps, or through the road on foot or bus up to a point.
A highlight of visiting Ålesund is the view from Aksla Lookout Point (Aksla Utkikkspunkt) and walking down (or up) the 418 steps between Ålesund CBD and Mount Aksla. We were staying midtown, so walked up the quiet backstreets (Setrevegen, Fjelltunvegen) and trails to Mount Aksla. From there, we followed the pleasant wooded trail west to Aksla Utkikkspunkt. Later, we walked down the steps to Ålesund CBD. The wooded trail from Aksla Dam to the lookout point (Utkikkspunkt) was very enjoyable and not particularly busy until 100 metres from the lookout area. Also a couple of viewing spots along that trail. I think most folks take the tour train along Fjelltunvegen, and some walk along that road unaware of the trail the parallels the road. Aksla Utkikkspunkt and the 418 steps were understandably busy at the end of July but wasn't overwhelming (we saw two massive cruise ships docked below, and might have been others). A few very small stopping areas along the steps. Walking down (rather than up) the 418 steps seems to be an advantage because you are constantly facing different perspectives of the spectacular view. Visited at end of July 2025.
Wonderful view across the islands, just a short walk from where the bus stops. The bus was a little expensive but it was a bit too far to walk from the cruise terminal. On the day we were there, some locals where handing out free hot chocolate (the best I’ve ever tasted) and hot dogs.
418 steps to the top, for brilliant views over Ålesund. Although you can get to the top also by land train. I’m not a lover of heights, and coming down the steps, with not always having a rail, or wall, on my side, for reassurance wasn’t very pleasant.

Visited this place whilst on our cruise. Easy access via concrete paths with wheelchair wide doors. Everything here is easy for wheelchair users and buggies. Payment by cash or card. Welcome with a smile and helpful advice. Also good disabled parking at the front door. All floors are solid and easy gradients to navigate. There is so much information at this place to take in. The fish tanks were all clear and clean and very easy to see the fish etc. Outside there were the penguins and the otter tanks which were a delight to see. There was also a massive tank with seals in. Inside was a lovely cafe with a choice of very tasty cakes and sandwiches. It was spotless to and nice and airy. The toilets were very clean and access to the Disabled toilet was on the flat and very good access with big doors.
Atlantic Sea-Park is an incredible experience! The aquariums are beautifully designed and give you a close-up view of Norway’s fascinating marine life. The outdoor areas are stunning, with seals, penguins, and otters in spacious natural settings. Everything feels well-organized, family-friendly, and educational — perfect for kids and adults alike. The staff are knowledgeable and clearly passionate about what they do. A must-visit if you’re anywhere near Ålesund!
A Great Aquarium We were taken to the Aquarium as part of a tour from the cruise ship. It was a lovely sunny day and there is plenty to see outside as well as inside. They have otters, seals and penguins (lovely!) and the keeper did a great talk about the otters in English. In fact all the staff spoke very good English. There are some great views outside as well. Plenty for children to do both inside and outside so a good place to visit as a family. Inside there are various sized glass tanks and a viewing tunnel where you can see the fish etc. There is also a large open top tank where you can look over and watch the various sea life. Lots of interactive activities for both children and adults. There is a great cafe too which had lovely cakes and food! Again the staff here spoke very good English. There is a shop with various souvenirs etc. Good clean toilets. The Aquarium is well worth a visit and we would like to go again one day.
This is a great aquarium and a must visit if you are in the area. There are a variety of exhibits and you’ll learn so much about the sea creatures of Norway and beyond! We loved watching various fish swim freely through the large tanks and listening to their knowledgeable staff give presentations on the animals (they spoke in both Norwegian and English, great for us foreign visitors!). Watching the diver hand-feed a whole bunch of fish is their large tank was very impressive.
Best aquarium I’ve been to! Talks were educational and interesting, as well as super cute! Loved the otters and penguins, you can tell they’re really cared for. If you’re in the area please go and support this wonderful place, I wish we had this in the UK, I’d be there all the time!
Very well designed with lots of tanks to see the sea life and tons of interactive exhibits for the kids and adults to enjoy. Plus the Cafe was wonderful too!! Enjoy!!
Great Aquarium with lots of different ocean species to discover. Great place to visit if you're staying in Ålesund.
I had a fantastic time at Atlantic Sea-Park! The aquarium is well-organized, interactive, and beautifully located by the ocean. The variety of marine life is impressive, and the feeding shows were both fun and educational. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and the outdoor area with the seals and penguins was a highlight for the whole family. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area – a great experience for all ages!

Lighthouses
Striking lighthouse with sweeping sea views, a cosy cafe & exhibits covering the landmark's history.
Slide 1 of 8
I always look forward to visiting lighthouses when I travel and I was very happy to find this one. Unfortunately, it was 3:00pm when we arrived, and the lighthouse and the cafe were closing, but we were able to walk up to the lighthouse to take pictures. The cafe was very clean and modern with big open windows with a beautiful view; we had walked in just as they were closing. There was plenty of parking and you had to pay to park. This beautiful lighthouse with scenic views was built in 1853 and stands 22.5 m high. This lighthouse is not a far drive from Ålesund and it is well worth the trip.
Very calm place with lots of spots where you can simply sit and rest your mind. We arrived too early to enter the lighthouse or café, but we could still walk around and enjoy the landscapes — we even saw a rainbow. I strongly recommend bringing a thermos with tea or coffee; it makes the experience feel much cozier.
Lovely interesting lighthouse that you can enter and climb. The view is extraordinary.
Spectacularly isolated lighthouse - very steep steps/ladders to the top. Lovely visitor centre - how on earth they make it pay when it's in the middle of nowhere beats me, but it was all lovely.
Nice relaxing place. Excellent way to see the lighthouse and the surrounding area.
Beautiful and quiet island. Fascinating rocks on beach. Great sunset.
The lighthouse wasn't open to go in when we visited but you could walk around it and enjoy the beach and open views all around. There is a centre very close with cafe and art displays, plenty of parking and it was really quiet when we visited. A great place to relax and explore
The area is very beautiful. You need to climb narrow stairs inside of the lighthouse, it is not long, takes 2-3 minutes. The view is outstanding. We were there in June, and It was very cold and windy on the top.

Super informative, compact museum that was excellent for learning more about Ålesund’s history. It was cool to go here before walking more around the city and recognizing all the Art Noveau around town! The contemporary exhibits were wonderful too. A must-visit!
Jugendstilsenteret og KUBE is a fascinating blend of art, architecture, and history in Ålesund. The museum beautifully showcases the city’s Art Nouveau heritage through interactive exhibits and stunning design details. KUBE adds a contemporary edge, with thought-provoking modern art that contrasts nicely with the historical setting. The staff are friendly, the building itself is an artwork, and the view from the upper floors is lovely—a must-visit for architecture and art lovers alike.
Beautiful art nouveau building with an interesting display and movie on Norways's Jungenstil movement. Also, all the other displays and exhibits were set up beautifully with detailed descriptions in English. Really enjoyed our visit here!!
Very much enjoyed this gem of a museum, the innovative Time Machine (also in English if required) gave us a great insight into the area's history. The helpful team kindly rejigged the art nouveau history slide shows to also play in English. The downstairs display indicating the battles to preserve the local architecture were familiar, whatever country you are from. Coffee and biscuits available. A short walk from the cruise terminal.
I understood Art Nouveau much better after this illuminating trip. The whole building itself is a work of art and more immersive than expected. Lovely staff, quirky and honesty box run cafe, owls everywhere. It's as if a fantasy elf designed an apothecary and living quarters. The art museum attached wasn't that great tho but included in the price.
What a wonderful museum! I love small niche museums and this one is great. Architecturally significant for its Art Nouveau design. There is a great collection of enamels; things like teaspoons, decorative items, other tableware. There is some furniture from the era. And the front entrance is a former pharmacy with all the drawers. And be sure to look for the owls
Interesting museum. The time machine described the fire and reconstruction nicely. The top portion was only a house with affluent furnishings (but I have no idea about the significance of who lived here).
Beautiful..... A very nice old place in Alesund. Worth for a short stay, also the nice museum.

This place is really nice and peaceful. You should totally visit and see those old buildings. It'll give you a good glimpse into the history of Ålesund. It's like a big open-air museum. My wife and I had a great time taking cute pictures there on a bright sunny day.
Lovely place. We spent around 1.5 hours walking around the outside area. Accessible by car/bus, ~15-20 mins from Ålesund city center.
Living History in a Lovely and Peaceful Setting To visit Sunnmore Open-Air Museum you’ll need to make your way up to charming Alesund, a worthwhile stop for many reasons! The museum boasts a truly wonderful presentation of Norwegian history, and was to us much more enjoyable than the thorough but somewhat overwhelming Folk Museum in Oslo. The grounds at Sunnmore are meticulously kept. The strategic layout of the historic buildings plus thoughtful landscaping takes full advantage of the sun and lakes, offering endless back-lit, dreamy Norwegian vistas from every angle. The nearby mountains were still snow-capped during our visit, adding to the folktale atmosphere. Be sure to walk over to the church, but be respectful that this is a cemetery still in use. Note: there is handicapped parking close to the museum. Alesund is easily reached by air from anywhere in Norway. Rent a car at the small and efficient airport and begin exploring. There are many fantastic towns like Andalsnes within easy driving distance of Alesund. This region is worth far more exploring than one stop on a cruise ship itinerary can ever give you.
I went in the weekdays and it’s really relaxing for leisure walk/ hike. The park itself doesn’t have much guide but the paths are clear enough to lead you to all the key areas. The exhibits/ houses well displayed and demonstrated how the Norwegian live in the past. Quite an interesting place to explore.
Excellent museum with information in English as well as Norwegian. Massive area. You could spend half a day easily.
Nice. We were there after 17:00...but could walk outside and still enjoy it. Cosy place with good info about object. With busstop near entrance
Excellent museum demonstrating life in Alesund Norway with a recreation of houses and buildings along with a wonderful boat museum including Viking longboats. We came on an excursion from the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship and it was very informative and enjoyable.
Beautiful outdoor museum. Very cute little houses, you can see how people lived there. A lot of interesting history of Norwegian life. There is an exhibition of small and large boats. You can easily spend an hour or two there walking outside, watching the lake and flowers.

Very helpful tourist and visitor center. They helped me book a tour to the fjord. Lots of pamphlets and maps too for purchase here. They speak many languages. Open early at 830 am as well
The lady behind the desk was so helpful in booking a boat tour to the fjords very knowledgeable and friendly! Would be nice if they were open more!
Very nice town with Jugend style house. Stay 1-2 nights to explore and enjoy the city before or after the fjords and mountains. We visited end of May and it was not crowded. Several outdoor activities available. But many things van be done by your own, public transport will take you to many nice sites in Alesund and the surrounding areas. See or download FRAM app, and consider the concept Travel as a local, i.e bus and ferry to Geiranger about 7h leaving at 9 am. We walk up the 400+ steps to view point Fjellstua with our boys 2 and 5 year old. You can also do it:-)
The guided town walk Art Nouveau and local history was fantastic! The tour guide was so good, with so much local knowledge about the history which we have not learned from elsewhere, and also from a contemporary angle. We highly recommend it! Maria, from Sweden
Beautiful city! How yoo the stairs early inn the morning for the best light that lights up the buildings below with no shadows!
Beautiful place must do the 419 steps at Fjellstua for views that are spectacular, the only down side is its very wet. Xx

Gorgeous hotel on the canal. Our room was large with a huge bathroom (with surprisingly nowhere of decent height to hang towels and no space to put toiletries bags ). Very comfortable bed and daily service kept it looking good. Only here for two nights, we loved it. Dinner at Apotekergata No. 5 was wonderful (so we ate there the next night too) with a great wine list and really knowledgeable service (and beautiful art). The breakfast room was so nice in the morning, with the sun coming in through the windows. Very good selection of food. The foyer with the huge chimney and fireplace was lovely for a drink and we even had a pianist for one of the afternoons. The restaurant in the building next door and also has a perfect little cafe/grocery store with lovely sandwiches and excellent coffee.
Amazing hotel in the center of the "Venice of Norway". Beautiful rooms with modern amenities. Awesome views, connected to, and in walking distance of restaurants, pubs, and all the town offers. Bathtubs and sauna available outside, and then cool off with a plunge into the water! Exhilarating! The honey moon suite is in a light house a short walk away!
Brosundet Hotel in Ålesund is a beautifully restored waterside hotel that perfectly blends history and modern comfort. The rooms are stylish, cozy, and full of character, many with stunning views over the canal. The service is warm and attentive, and the breakfast is excellent with local touches. The atmosphere feels intimate and authentic, reflecting Ålesund’s maritime charm. A perfect stay for those seeking elegance and a true sense of place.
A Perfect Blend of Elegance and Comfort Hotel Brosundet is truly a gem in the heart of Ålesund. The ambiance is warm and inviting, blending historic charm with modern sophistication. The interiors are thoughtfully designed every detail from the lighting to the furniture adds to the cozy yet refined atmosphere. The food is exceptional, with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients presented beautifully. The views of the harbor and surrounding fjords are simply breathtaking, especially at sunrise and sunset. It’s a place where comfort meets style, and every corner reflects quality. Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience the best of Ålesund in a serene and stylish setting.
Where to begin? Everything about Hotel Brosundet is perfect. The staff is incredibly warm, kind and accommodating. The room was clean and comfortable. The sauna and outdoor bathtubs were so refreshing and relaxing! Tedans was such a special experience (and delicious). The hotel is also in the heart of Alesund and the entire city is easily accessible from it. We had such a wonderful stay and highly recommend Hotel Brosundet to anyone traveling to Alesund!
What a lovely hotel in the heart of Ålesund city centre! Straightforward check in processes, clean and cute rooms and a lovely well-stocked breakfast! The gym in this hotel is so well-situated with an outside part where you can hang out in the sauna! The uppermost floor rooms are cute attic-style with low ceilings but knowing that, we were not concerned at all! Added to the personality of our rooms! Felt at home for the night in this beautiful city. Thank you for the home away from home. Amazing!
My absolute favourite hotel. It has the perfect calm, cozy, close-to-nature aesthetic with warm woody colours, minimalistic interior, and friendly and nice staff inside - while beautiful majestic mountains that take your breath away lies in the horizon, and the untamable sometimes stormy North Sea are raging outside. The contrast is everything. This is truly a retreat-haven for a Norwegian soul, specially us from the busy capital. Me and my boyfriend has been here twice this year to relax, and has agree to make this a tradition every year.
Tucked in the heart of downtown Ålesund, Hotel Brosundet blends modern design with historic charm. Its location is a standout—just a short stroll from the pier and within easy reach of local shops and cafes. Whether you're here for sightseeing or a relaxed escape, the convenience is hard to beat. The rooms are thoughtfully designed, reflecting clean Scandinavian aesthetics with a cozy, contemporary touch. Expect smart layouts, tasteful furnishings, and a restful ambiance. It’s the kind of place where the details make the difference. Perfect for travelers who appreciate stylish surroundings and easy access to the best of the city. We will for sure be back!

Ålesund Kirke is a beautiful and peaceful place that truly stands out in the heart of Ålesund. The architecture is stunning, with elegant stonework and impressive stained glass windows that reflect the rich history and craftsmanship of the church. Inside, the atmosphere is serene and welcoming, perfect for quiet reflection or simply appreciating the beauty of the surroundings. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or just seeking a moment of calm, Ålesund Kirke is definitely worth a visit. A true gem in the city!
Gorgeous church both inside and outside. There is a ship hanging which was quite unusual for me. The stained glass windows were exquisite. The murals upfront are beautiful and unique. It costs 50nok to get in. I wasn't too happy about paying to get into a place of worship and I hope the money goes towards upkeep of the church
Nice church with graveyard. Rebuilt after 1904 fire.
Amazing experience as always. The church is really beautiful
Beautiful church but closed due to reconstruction
Stunning church up a hill in Alesund. Unusually it has a model ship hanging from the ceiling in the middle which apparently is common in Norwegian coastal towns. Insane fresco at the front. Costs £5 each to go in and worth it if you're going to 'read' the church a bit. Not to just go in and go ooh. Loved the severity of it.
Beautiful and serene place cathedral off the beaten path.
Only had a Quick Look at it from the outside. But it was nice. Good stone architecture

Incredible views. If you think you see the top, you don’t. You aren’t there until you know for sure you’re there. The locals even say hi occasionally on this hike.
Beautiful view, windy at the top, make sure to stay safe and bring water if you go there on a warm day. If you are afraid of heights be a bit careful when you reach the top.
A very nice hike with a great view. There is now also an alternative trail as well. No restroom, no fee to enter. You can take a local bus or walk from town.
Challenging trail and muddy but worth the hike. Took the number one bus from the city center to reach the base.
Very spectacular view over the entire city of Ålesund and the islands around it.Good trailsguides to follow leading way up to the top. Some paths maybe wet at rainy season and can be windy and cold depending on the weather forecast.Merely sitting with food on top gives a very big relief to see all the beautiful scenery and islands surrrounding the area.
Beautiful view from the top.
A brilliant walk/hike with two great guides Dylan and Victoria. Well worth the effort to get to the top as the 360° views are stunning.

A great hike to the top and amazing views once you arrive. Lots of opportunities to do some additional hiking and sightseeing in the nearby area.
A total rip off. The whole point of visiting was for the view and the cafe. The cafe was closed ( we got there about 11.30 am on a Wednesday) and consequently no toilets so check to see if they cafe is open before you go. The view point was open but 100 NOK ( about £7.50) which is a complete rip off in my opinion as you can see just as much from the view points outside of the Building. The views are stunning but beware there are no toilets other than the ones in the cafe.
Very beautiful! There’s a free viewpoint just a few steps behind the paid one. The free viewpoint with a picnic table is perfect! A great activity with a stunning view of the city. There’s also a café where you can enjoy the view from indoors.
One of the the most beautiful towns we visited on our cruise. The trip to the mountains summit is a must with fantastic views. The land train has a really informative audio guide of the towns locations and history. There are some really interesting buildings and walks. The people are friendly and very helpful.
Well worth the 418 step climb to the top for the fabulous view of Alesund and beyond.

Great museum. If you are interested in history of Alesund, this is the place to go. Very informative and interesting. My favorite museum of our trip to Norway. If traveling as a family, there is a map with stickers where you have to place the items in the correct rooms, so the whole family is engaged. It looks small on the outside, but the place is crammed with information and items, such as an original telephone from Alexander Graham Bell which was used to make the first phone call in Europe. Highly recommended.
Brilliant museum with some really interesting exhibits. The staff were really friendly and gave lots of information about the area.
Aalesunds Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Ålesund’s rich history, from the devastating 1904 fire to the city’s unique Art Nouveau rebirth. The exhibits are well-organized, with engaging photos, models, and artifacts that bring the maritime and cultural heritage to life. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the building itself is a piece of history. A small but captivating museum that perfectly captures Ålesund’s spirit.
Small but complete just enough to give good representation of the period. We enjoyed it
Really interesting collection of items that reflect this towns history and areas beyond. Recommended definitely.
A small but interesting Museum I especially liked the photogrophy display with the old cameras and photographs

Very interesting small church.
Over a thousand years old and very unique in Norway. It is only church made of marble. Giske island is close to airport, so stop by before you turn in rental car. Small charge but worth the visit and the views.
Giske Church: A Testament to Norwegian History and Architectural Brilliance. Nestled in the heart of Giske Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Giske Church stands as a testament to both Norwegian history and architectural brilliance. Constructed in the 12th century, this marble parish church is not only one of the oldest continuously used churches in Norway but also the country's only marble church. The origin of the church's white marble is shrouded in mystery, but its journey to the island by boat and the subsequent construction showcases the determination and prowess of its builders. The church's architectural style, predominantly Norman, resonates with the architectural movements of the period. Giske Church was originally erected as a Benedictine monastery and underwent significant renovations over the years, including the construction of its main tower and new roof in the early 12th century. Its role as an epicenter of Catholic liturgy and education in the 1500s and 1600s underscores its historical significance. Following the Reformation in 1537, the church was repurposed for Protestant worship, with extensive renovations carried out in the 1750s and the 1860s. Inside, visitors can marvel at exquisite carvings depicting scenes from the Gospels of Jesus' life, such as the Last Supper and the Resurrection. The church also houses its original 12th-century cloister and a library where medieval books are preserved.
This had a cool bit of history. Who doesn't enjoy an old church? It was clean and easy to get around.
900 years old church. Pretty cool and beautiful, but was closed in the middle of the day…
Very interesting small church. Need the local guide to tell the story of the church
We loved the history of Ginske church. The upkeep of the church and cemetery was quite impressive.

Awesome experience with the nicest docents. Incredible story about this miracle house surviving the fire that destroyed the entire town. Totally worth the visit, and it’s free!
A hidden gem in Ålesund! Waldehuset is a small but deeply moving house with a unique story tied to the great fire of 1904. The fact that this humble building survived when everything around it was destroyed is fascinating, and the guided tour adds a powerful spiritual dimension to the visit. The hosts are warm, welcoming, and passionate about sharing the house's history and message. Whether you're religious or just curious, it's a peaceful and memorable stop that offers something very different from the usual tourist spots. Don't miss it!
You must visit this place, not just for the interior but to listen to the factual stories about Alesund, the house and the fire. It's a must. And it's free.
Really interesting and well worth a visit. It's free but you can make donations or but refreshments. Really nice gentleman spoke to us about the history of the town and the fire
A true miracle this house survived the fire. For July 2018 open every day from 10 to 3 when cruise ships in. Don't miss this! The museum is free and serves excellent coffee for only Kr25.
Fascinating history and remake story of Gods grace to a man, but even more intriguing to hear the whole story. Well worth a visit for everyone. Loved it
Accidentally fell upon the museum after climbing down from the mountain hill top. So glad I found this place, rich history with an amazing story. The smell of the waffles were to good not to try and they did not disappoint as they were so delicious. The staff were so welcoming and kind, it is amazing to see the love and pride they have for this house.
Really old house bought by the pentecostal church for its miraculous properties. Really friendly people, Perfect English spoken of course, Nice coffee and cakes. I won't spoil the story for you. Some of the timbers were 600 years old. Really nice place to visit because we were made so welcome in an anxiety house and museum. And no-one can accuse me of being religious.
