Beautiful Church, and probably the most beautiful "Romane" architecture style church in France. I recommend to walk by also at night, it is simply magical. Just look at the pictures.
Looks pretty from the outside but it's closed due to renovation so unable to see inside. The picture boards on the outside seem to illustrate and beautiful interior, so it was a shame we couldn't see it all when we visited Poiters.
Amazing experience, after many gothic churches, to see this romanique one give you a big surprise. The only pity is that it is closed for many works of renovation
We found Our Lady the Great (Notre-Dame la Grande) to be a beautiful eleventh century church. This is a Romanesque design so it is much darker inside compared with the later gothic cathedrals. The interior is also filled beautifully painted support columns. This is a really impressive thousand year old church.
Wonderfully preserved, beautiful old church - exterior and interior. Amazing painted pillars, decorated side chapel ceilings and stained glass. We had the extra joy of a solo with organ rehearsal. Free entry, short walk from Hotel de ville. Quiet as no market on a Monday
A very ancient church, medium sized but contains a lot of history with beautiful stained glass and painted ceilings. Located in the heart of the old Poitiers village. Very quaint.
Such a beautiful church, loved all the small details on the pillars, the statues and the paintings, beyond extraordinary.
An impressive church both due to its age and architecture, different from other churches due to its darkness

Beautiful 😍 place. So green with fountain, sculpture, flowers, and even animals. Brilliant place for children with children areas to play. Small coffee shop serving also beer . Lack of toilets, unfortunately. There is only one toilet next to the coffee shop but mostly closed.
Nice park and enjoyable stroll for both adults and kids alike. The fountain is pretty - that is when it works... The English Garden has a variety of statues, Trees, flowers, pond and bird's life as well as fishes. Overall, Short walks, panoramic views and kids plays. Free parking close by is difficult. Best options are street paid or Paid Blossac underground parking.
Excellent place for a weekend family outing, a perfect place to enjoy the city's calmness and to play, camp with your loved ones. It offers a great view of the Poitiers city clain and also have a mini aquarium and birds collection for kids to enjoy. One can say a best place to hang out with a perfect snacks carried and best people around only to have quality time and to feel the city's peaceful culture.
A lovely sunny day to stroll around and admire the avenues and flower beds.
Beautiful park ! Good place for weekend picnic !
Beautiful park - however was followed by a sketchy man through the park - so be careful of your surroundings there.
A nice park with an area with small farm animals
Very beautiful and relaxing. Nice view of the city from the park.

A church which gives you an idea of how old the city of Poitiers is, it has artistic paintings and the place of Saint Radegonde who patronized Poitiers city and gave it the pride its enjoying today. For a person who like to spend time in silence and feel the peaceful ambience the perfect spot and one can pay deep respect for the wonders of the artistic works of ancient and roman time. One of the 3 femms of Poitiers. Must visit.
A 12th century church with relics of 6th century saints and impeccable (more recent) wall paintings. It's smaller and has a unique, eerie atmosphere that I found more conducive to peacefulness than the larger and more austere churches. Its historic role in 'protecting' the inhabitants is visible through the many thank-you notes covering the roles, which I found rather emotional (a mother thanking the saint for her son coming back alive from world war one). It's both historic and of cultural significance.
Beautiful church, very peaceful.
Along with the not-so-far Notre Dame de la Grande, it still has beautiful colorfully painted interior.
Don’t miss this church while in Poitiers. The burial site of Queen Radegonde
This is a very beautiful church not far down the hill from Cathedrale St Pierre. It is not as light as the Gothic church, and fewer people. Beautiful frescoes have survived above the choir. What you have to go here to see is the tomb. There is a crypt under the choir with the remains of St Agnes of Poitiers, among others. The stone sarcophagus is really eye catching lit around with candles. Don't miss
This church is so remarkable! The single Gothic nave isn't any Siegel, but the Roman choir and a vast crypt, these are absolutely unique! There is also a sarcophagus with Saint Radegonde. Really worth visiting.
Very Medieval Church built around the 6th century. Its name taken from Frankish queen and nun, Radegund, buried in the church, considered a Saint. The current Church is a combination of Romanesque and Angevin Gothic, constructed from 11th to 12th century. This is build in Latin Cross shape. It is one of many stunning churches in Poitiers. A must visit in this quiet but beautiful French town.

Nice church with friendly staff. 15 minutes to see it all.
Monument national ??!!
Entered the building intending to pay and there was a couple already having a talk from the person working there, so we waited by the door. The guide then stopped, looked us up and down and asked if we knew we had to pay and "if we could hear her over there", as if we were trying to steal a tour. There was an open door and then no-one in the ticket booth, so I'm not sure what we were expected to do. We left without going in any further.
Beautiful monument the Saint John baptistry is reputed to be the oldest existing Christian building in Europe. A must see.
Supposedly the oldest existing Christian building in the West and a spectacular example of Merovingian architecture. Interesting part of the history of this building was that it was abandoned around late 1700 during the "Revolution", confiscated from the church, sold to a private citizen who used it as a warehouse! Repurchased and saved from demolition, underwent restoration in the mid 20th century. Worth exploring.
7th century (c. 630-700), a rare Merovingian period monument preserved in an elevated position in France, houses a rare baptistery. Having the chance to visit this baptistery reminded me of Ravenna.
There is a small charge, which seems flexible if like us, you have a large family. Worth it to see what is claimed to be the oldest christian building in France. There is a leaflet that explains everything. Well worth the walk from the centre of town if you are interested in history.

Great museum in the middle of Poitiers. Staff were friendly and helped us navigate throughout the museum's layout (it's like a maze in the best possible way). The only thing to note was that all the descriptions were in french, however we just utilised Google translate on our phones and had no issues whatsoever. Definitely worth a visit.
Roman ruins, medieval art, and fine art. Admission was free on the day we went (Tuesday)
Fantastic museum. It was free to visit and contains some wonderful works by the recently re-evaluated Camille Claudel juxtaposed next to her teacher and lover Rodin, as well as many other works from ancient to 20th century. You will need a good hour or more to see everything. My only criticism is that it would be nice to have a multilingual audio guide or telephone app so as to access more information in multiple languages. One of the highlights of Poitiers and seemingly under-promoted by the city council. Staff were very friendly and helpful too.
Definitely worth a visit. We were very impressed by this modern concrete maze of a museum and art gallery, most of which is beneath street level. It covers pre historic, Roman, Medieval history and some stunning art and sculpture. We had to resort to Google translate as our French isn’t good enough to understand the descriptions. If you like Brutalist architecture this place is a hidden gem.
Worth a visit. I found the prehistoric and Roman sections the most interesting - as well as the brutalist museum building that is an exhibit in and of itself! The ladies on reception were lovely too.
Amazing Museum with an incredible collection of gallo-roman and medieval Age. It was a great Surprise!
A decent museum where especially the section with Roman artefacts is interesting. The paintings are from local artists, although the sculptures are of a top quality. As is free to visit I would certainly recommend this.
A museum in the heart of a city filled with heritage and Roman glory. The building is almost like a maze where you walk around without knowing where you are actually. It takes you on a ride around the artistic, archeological and historical ride into a new world. The paintings and the statute or the ancient tools and coins preserved in a very good manner.

(Translated by Google) Rediscovering the Palace of the Counts of Poitou-Ducs d'Aquitaine. The judicial city is functioning, this palace has finally had its first opening to the public. Obviously not everything is accessible, but the Salle des Pas Perdus and the bottom of the Maubergeon tower are already good, especially since these places benefit from a cultural event from 10/12/2019 to 01/19/2020 . Migrations have invaded our social fields, the CROSSINGS project, through the works of the Korean artist Kimsooja and those of guest artists, questions the reasons or causes of these human movements. Arranged next to, or inside, historic monuments, these contemporary creations invite you to take a walk through the city to (re)discover a very rich heritage. They enter into a strange reasoning with these buildings that are sometimes more than a thousand years old. At the media library exhibition, the guided tour seems imperative to me, the proximity of medieval documents and contemporary works allows us to appreciate the notion of conceptual art through the centuries. Thus, Hildegard of Bingen, a Genius of the 12th century, seemed to perfectly master this notion.

11th century UNESCO - one of 78 buildings (including, for example, Saint Sernin, the Pont Valentre, the Pilgrims' Hospital of Pons, etc.) on the four French pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela.
As half of the church was destroyed after the French revolution (used as a stone carry), only the upper part is authentic as the neve and facade were rebuild. But the roman architecture is however wurth while the visit as the repetitive arches within the church gives it a real distinctive atmosphere.
Very nice place to visit.
Wonderful place to visit!
Magical, elegant and beautiful historical ambience. It's history is a fascinating one which dates back to the 11th century. As you approach this church you are immediately drawn to her unusual and unique style. It was damaged during the French Revolution and was restored in the second half of the nineteenth century. A great atmosphere that welcomes all ages, backgrounds and religious beliefs. It's wheelchair friendly and highly recommended for the whole family. It's easily accessible if you're staying in Poitiers or accessible from surrounding areas by public transport or driving. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site bestowed in 1998. A charming and beautiful Church.
The church of St. Hilaire is one of the most important monuments in Poitiers for a number of reasons. First of all, it retains a good deal of it's 11th century construction and sculpture. This is unusual in French cities, where the rise of Gothic architecture tended to result in the tearing down of Romanesque churches in favor of the elegant new trends of the 13th century on. The current incarnation was built with a timber roof, but when that was replaced with stone vaulting, the nave was found to be too wide to support the weight of the stone above, so some innovative measures were taken in the form of an extra row of piers on each side of the nave to help lessen the span to be supported by the exterior buttresses. The scale of the church is massive, not necessarily in height, but in the volume of the building. Walk slowly down an aisle on one side, traverse the chevet slowly, marvel at the changing light, the 11th and 12th century carvings on the capitals and interior corbels, the remnants of Romanesque frescoes, and try to imagine how a rural medieval pilgrim would have reacted to a structure of this magnitude. You can easily spend an hour or more soaking up the peaceful ambience of the place. Another point of interest about this structure is the fact that part of the west end is missing, as this building was partially destroyed in quarrying activity following the French Revolution. Much of the vaulting in the nave and the western façade were rebuilt during the late-19th century reconstruction boom led by such people as Violet-le-Duc and Joly-Laterme. However, the building is NOT from the 19th century, as another reviewer has stated. St. Hilaire is a remarkable example of 11th and 12th century Romanesque architecture that, despite the relatively small areas of 19th-century reconstruction, is remarkably well preserved. It sits atop the central butte of Poitiers, some distance from the Centre Ville, but it is well worth the hike to get there. It is one of the places I visit every time I am in Poitiers.
Photographs cannot capture the majesty and scale of this 11th century church. Poitiers is a very beautiful and ancient town, the people are friendly, it's easy to navigate and there is so much to see.
Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand is one of the lightest, most elegant Romanesque churches in all of France. The slender columns rise up to create a great sense of verticality. Not to be missed. Poitiers has several very fine churches.

Culture. Restaurants. Shopping. A lot of cities have this, so why choose Poitiers? Because the city is really a hidden gem. The inner city with his pedestrian area is still a lively city with some really great restaurants to enjoy, a lot of very lovely squares to have a drink, nice shops to stroll and all of this with beautifully renovated buildings. Good to spend a few days when you pass by or spend some more time to explore the countryside. A pity that the staff of the office de tourism isn't a enthousiast...could a lot more client focused.
One of the friendliest and most helpful offices we have encountered anywhere. They were eager to understand our interests and to suggest an appropriate itinerary.
Escape Game outdoors “Alienor - Aller Simple” is a fun way to walk around the city with the kids but for groups of more than 4 people book 2 sessions as otherwise it will be difficult for everyone to follow. Price is high for adults who can just follow. No gift for participants at the end of the escape game.

We were passing thru on our way to Bordeaux. This is in the old section of Poitier & we found it a charming area. As an American I stop at all the Statue of Liberties in France (there are 35 total).
It’s cute, but nothing special around, if takes 10 minutes to visit from downtown Poitier, so why not? Nearby, there are some old houses worth paying attention
Statue is beautiful, place is small and parking rather hard!
I love this monument in the heart of Poitiers. It's just a shame the rubbish bins are overflowing most of the time. Parking is diabolical in the square, especially during school term and at pick up.

This is the Crucifixion window, which measures 3.10m wide and 8.35 m high. It was commissioned by Eleanor of Aquitaine in the years 1160 to 1170, when the current Gothic cathedral was beginning to be built.
Very old and impeccably preserved stained glasses, which are hard to find elsewhere. This is a sizeable ancient churches of historical and architectural interest. The wall paintings are rather washed out but the ceilings are still crisp in the side chapel. There are multiple explicative notes translated in english so it's inclusive for tourists. Be mindful of the time of your visits as you can't tour it while in use for religious functions.
It is the outside that makes this building into a cathedral as it is spoiled with 3 different arches heavily decorated. The interior only has in parts of the church his medieval paintwork and it also contains some exceptional glass windows which are abundantly detailed with scenes from the live of Jesus.
Poitiers is famous for its historic victories over Al-Andalus, particularly the Battle of Tours and Portiers in early 8th century, where Charles Martel halted the advance of Muslim forces into Western Europe. These victories marked a turning point in European history and helped preserve Christian rule in continental Europe („Rettung des Abendlandes“). Poitiers Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the city of Poitiers. Built mainly in the 12th-13th centuries, it is a prime example of early Gothic architecture in western France. Commissioned by King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine, the cathedral features a wide façade with three large doorways and stunning stained glass windows, including a famous 12th-century Crucifixion window. The interior is spacious, with a wooden vaulted ceiling and richly decorated choir stalls.
Stunning cathedral and one that should he visited and seen when in Poiters. So much to see inside as each part has a unique feature. Beautiful and peaceful 🙏
Saint-Pierre de Poitiers Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Poitiers, in the Vienne department and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is the seat of the archdiocese of Poitiers. In addition to its title of archiepiscopal church, it has had the rank of minor basilica since March 1, 1912. Less well known than the Notre-Dame-la-Grande church, this immense stone vessel is nevertheless the largest religious building in the city and a landmark visible from afar in the urban landscape. Built on the initiative of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II Plantagenêt from 1160, consecrated in 1379, it is in the Angevin Gothic style (use of curved vaults on a square plan) and is similar to the hall churches by its division into three vessels of almost equal height. The façade, flanked by two unfinished towers, borrows elements from the stylistic grammar of northern France. The interior preserves stalls from the 13th century and a collection of historiated stained-glass windows dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, including a Crucifixion, one of the peaks of French medieval stained glass art. The current cathedral was begun in the second half of the twelfth century, around 1162 according to Abbé Auber; it was financed by the bishop and the cathedral chapter but also perhaps by the Duchess of Aquitaine, Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122-1204), and her husband Henry II of England Plantagenêt (1133-1189), as by all the faithful. The construction was long because the church was not definitively consecrated until October 17, 1379. The construction was carried out in seven successive campaigns. They did not follow a predefined plan, which explains many repentances and resumptions during the construction site. Indeed, the initial party, an Angevin Gothic with curved vaults, appeared more and more archaic as the work lengthened. The desire to build up to date clashed with the constructive choices made during previous work.
Beautiful and so peaceful nestled neatly in Poitier well worth a visit.

And to top it all off, a real Sigorsky helicopter. In short, you'll be amazed; in fact, you'll be amazed. The old man who collected everything gives you a friendly welcome and proudly tells you about his collection. Fantastic! If you're in the area, you have to stop by. Once in a lifetime! Once in a lifetime!
(Translated by Google) A very nice museum with beautiful collections! The museum was created by the parents of the current owner. Being a single person, he may not open the doors exactly on time. Be patient, he will arrive. Perhaps it would be a good idea to put a bench in front of the museum so people can wait, especially the elderly. A small sign saying that the museum will open soon would also be a plus. The current signs give the impression that if the door is closed and you have to call to enter, without an answer, you might wonder if the museum is exceptionally closed for the day. Thank you for this wonderful experience!
