Displays on characters from local folklore, known for their fearsome wooden masks & straw outfits.

An absolutely Amazing place & tradition !!! This museum is off the beaten path, however, it really rewards the efforts to get here a hundred times over. The wonderfully unique & enigmatic Namahage custom is incredibly captivating, as are the strikingly dynamic and powerfully mysterious Ogres/Oni that are such an important part of the Oga Peninsula & its phenomenal people & history. Japan has many fantastic aspects and majestic manifestations of its fabulous culture, and the Namahage tradition and this marvelous museum is one of Tohoku's best and not to be missed :)
A nice museum to visit with your kids. Such a cute place. It reminded me of the museum I visited as a child in the 90´. The museum is nice and simple. 1 topic : the Namahage. We still refer to this with my daughter now after several month visiting it. There is a little video that again dates a little where you can see how children in the 80’ and 90’ were traumatized by the monsters. Weird and fun to watch at the same time. There are craftsman inside the museum to prepare masks and other articles. The gift shop is sooo good . Outside there is a little traditional house where they replay the tradition for you. Be careful if you have asthma, there is smoke and real fire smells. There is a little library at the entrance. Plenty of eggs dispenser ( the little toys for the kids) the toilets are pristine. One of the oldest trees of Japan is 15min walking distance from it. I will definitely go back when we have other kids in age. Ideal for 7 to 11 yo.
Very neat and informative stop on one of Japan's most interesting traditions! I learned a few new things and enjoyed this small museum. The mask maker wasn't there when we went, but it was a fun time regardless. I'd recommend watching the 30 minute documentary in the little theater too. Cool place to stop at if you are in the Northern Japan region!
A really unique tradition that is interesting to learn about. The museum is stunning and does a thorough job. The architecture is enchanting. The surrounding nature and drive to get there are stunning as well. For only 400¥ more you can actually experience Namahage coming to your "house" yourself. Definitely recommend, and you can spend a gorgeous day exploring the unique Oga Peninsula too.
for those interested in japanese folkore, this museum is a total gem! some of the information are only in japanese but it's totally fine with google lense. I took the shuttle from Oga and arrived around 11h and took the other shuttle at 14h20 and i didn't have much time to walk around the shrine nearby. however i think I spent more time than most people in the museum and the souvenir shop is really nice. I also went to the namahage performance, it's only in japanese so I didn't understand a thing but it was still an amazing experience. I would suggest to go to the museum before the performance since there is a short documentary in the museum (in english) which help to understand the performance for non japanese speakers.
Very famous Akita tradition. Museum has costumes for cosplaying the namahage people. You can also experience namahage breaking into your house . There are namahage models, a movie explaining the origin, and all for 1100 yen per person (combined ticket) it is far from Akita city and is a 2 hour drive up the hill.
it's really hard to go Namahage museum by public transport. the first bus from Hadachi station is 11:36 (oga aqua rium line). please inform driver where you go and he will notice you when arrive the bus stop where to transfer.the Van (bus) will get you at 12:06. it is only 200 yen from station to museum with 1 hour. I took taxi back to station due to limit of time. it costs 4600 yen.
It was a great place to take the kids and experience another piece of Japanese culture. I recommend sitting down to watch the Namahage documentary and taking photos while trying on the masks.

Beautiful lighthouse. Nice roads. Nothing much there during winter but if you yearned to travel the roads less-travelled, this is one of the nicest routes
A lighthouse on the cape in Oga Peninsula with beautiful scenery of Sea of Japan around it. A good spot to enjoy sunset. There's also a monument for North Latitude 40°, although no English description about it.
he first lighthouse was built in 1898,[4] a white hexagon 24.4 meter steel tower. It was electrified with a 1,500W lamp in 1932 and manned until 1972, when it transitioned to automatic control. From 1973 Nyudozaki carries a continuous white spotlight that shines on the Mizushima Islet about 1,000 meters to the north. It is currently one of the 16 Japanese lighthouses which is open to the public, who may climb to the top for a panoramic view over the Sea of Japan (not available in winter season). A small museum has been attached since 1998 displaying references and lenses.[1]The Tower is listed as one of the “50 Lighthouses of Japan” by the Japan Lighthouse Association and operated by the 2nd Regional Coast Guard Headquarters.
300 yen is valuable.
Good place on the edge of Japan. Good views makes it a good place to relax. I would suggest to go here during sunset but there is a boat ride which you can do till 4:00 in the evening. Can't say how good it is though.
Scenic spot at the Japan Sea coast ! Bit of a long drive out on , sometimes, very adventurous roads! Great when the sun shines!
Great lighthouse

Aquarium

Large marine complex with spotted seals, penguins & polar bears, plus rare Japanese sandfish.
Slide 1 of 8
Pretty good Aquarium. Polar bear looked miserable since it's summer. We went on a weekend and had to use the alternate parking lot up the hill from the aquarium but the view was great.
Prepare your jacket, the temperature is low over there during fall.
Lots of displays, good value for money. Delicious restaurant. Amazing views. No English at all. Tanks and cages are so small. The polar bear and seals are pacing they’re so bored. They have 4 octopus in tiny tank! So 5 stars in some ways 1 star in others.
Enjoyable time. Aquariums were clean and well documented. Didn't expect to see polar bears and have close encounters with seals and sea lions, very exciting.
The coastal road drive from Akita to the Aquarium GAO is very scenic, passing by fishing villages, stretches of wind turbines and stunning views of Japan Sea. There are lots of parking spots. Upon entering you will see a giant tank with big stingrays swimming among the fishes. The seals and sea lion performances during feeding time is very entertaining and the trainers are very professional. We can see it up close and it’s a lot of fun. There is also a polar bear but because the summer day is extremely hot, the bear needs to be protected and stayed in the shade. Overall a nice experience and very suitable for kids and families. Outside the Aquarium, you can see the rugged coastline of the Oga Peninsula and the Lighthouse.
The aquarium at Oga was a really cool place to have a look. We got to see polar bears, penguins, and upside down jellys who spend life on their heads apparently. The polar bear was playing while we were there which was cool. The food there was awesome for the price. We got to hold sea slugs. They felt horrible. Will do it again.
It was one of the best aquariums I went to. Very well presented information, with a lot of different species and frequent shows with the penguin, seals, and sea lions. The staff were very kind and accommodating. Will visit again if I ever go back to Oga peninsula!
An aquarium at the tip of the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture. Since it was a local aquarium, I entered the aquarium without much expectation. However, it was a wonderful aquarium that far exceeded expectations. They exhibit saltwater fish, freshwater fish, sea lions, penguins, and other animals that take advantage of their behavior and characteristics. I was able to enjoy it enough even if an adult watched it. It was compatible with coronavirus, and the body temperature was measured with a thermography camera at the entrance. The infectious diseases were well dealt with, and I could feel the high awareness of the people involved in the aquarium. If you come to Akita prefecture, I definitely recommend you to visit.

If you can only do one thing in Japan make sure it is going to the Namahage festival in February. The best night ever, made better by the falling snow. If you are visitng outside of February do go to the nearby museum.
We visited this place to see the namahage festival. One of Akita's most old festivals. The place was pretty and the festival was worth seeing. The snowy weather made it even perfect 🤩
This shrine marks one end of the pilgrimage route across the mountains of Oga. In the past it was a syncretic Buddhist site, but became a Shinto shrine in the Meiji Period. Up behind the shrine is a collection of interesting Buddhist statues and massive stone stairs leading into the mountains. We went here instead of the nearby museum because there was a line to get in there, but while the shrine is quieter the whole narrow mountain road and parking can be crowded during holiday seasons.
A beautiful shrine with lots of history. Also lots of stairs. Wonderful little stall for purchasing omamori or other shrine souvenirs. Very kind worker as well, they were willing to put up with some broken Japanese between me and a friend to ask a question. Highly recommend if you are in the area!
The hotel shuttle bus driver did not wake us up and brought us back to the bus staging area and had us walk back to the hotel to catch the next shuttle. Came all the way from America to see the festival and missed half of it because we fell asleep on the final shuttle bus. Stay awake!
Famous for its Namahage Festival held annually in February.

Interesting to see along a beautiful coastline.
We only stopped because we noticed it was on the way already. A fun spot for a few photos, but not worth the trip if its out of your way. Based on others' photos, seems like it would be best around sunset. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes as the walk to Godzilla is quite rocky and uneven.
It's better to go when the weather is clear an around sunset to get a good view of the rock... However up near the light house there is a great view 😍😍
If I squint I can see godzilla.
Good experience to this Godzilla Rock, Parking is more than enough. Small lighthosue nearby. During high tide might not be possible to go near to the rock. Best to view during sunset time. Bonus tip- drive clockwise direction on this island for more beautiful experience
Godzilla shaped rock. Dangerous to walk to in the snow as there is not visibility for footing. Roads on the way to the destination are difficult to drive on if you’re not used to ice and slush
Bit hard to reach but fun to look at, you won’t spend much time there, some climbing over rocks is necessary to get there
There is a strange rock in the shape of a monster.

Expansive and easily accessible new obsevation deck that overlooks the Oga landscape, particularly ancient craters that extend into the ocean. The deck is built to accommodate a large number of people, but we were the only ones there even during Golden Week. There are toilets nearby, but no concessions -- an old rest house was apparently abandoned.
A observatory close to Oga aquarium that overlooks the peninsula. It also explains what the water holes are. Also visible in the distant mountaintop is JASDF radar site.
A new observation deck is being constructed. Amazing view~
Beautiful place from seeing sunset....🌞🌞🌘🌓🌒
Nice lookout point with information tables about the nearby mares.
(Translated by Google) First visit on May 27, 2025 When it's sunny, the view is amazing and you can enjoy the spectacular view. There is a fairly large free parking lot, so you'll never have trouble finding a place to park your car. There is also a public toilet at the edge of the parking lot. The Sea of Japan is magnificent, visible beyond Ninomegata, and you can enjoy the sunset in the evening. If you want to see the lagoon beautifully, you can get a better view from the observation deck from the parking lot, and go down the hill to the right.
(Translated by Google) I stopped here on my way back from staying at Oga Onsenkyo. Perhaps because it was early in the morning, there were no other cars heading in the same direction as me, and after a few minutes of driving alone on a fairly steep mountain road, I came across an open area with an observation deck and a large parking lot on the other side of the road. There are a few steps up to the observation deck, but the deck itself is on a slope, making it easy to climb. I recommend visiting on a nice day as you can enjoy 360-degree views of magnificent nature. This is a complex of 5 shrines to various deities, and is on the other end of the ancient pilgrimage route across the mountains from Shinzan Shrine. There is a sign in English by the parking lot that explains the legend behind the area, the ogre stories, and the origin of the monumental stone stairway up to the shrine buildings. It is only 20 minutes, but steep in spots and treacherous when wet, so wear appropriate shoes! Besides a toilet at the parking lot and self-service window for buying lucky talismans, there is no staff and no amenities, so bring water etc.
Unusual shrine in a beautiful corner of Oga Peninsula. The short uphill hike to get to the shrine makes it even more interesting.
(Translated by Google) You can see it after climbing the legendary 999 stone steps that were built by an ogre in one night from the Goshado parking lot. The shrine is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, and is also known as the birthplace of Namahage. The stone steps are not well-formed, so you have to be careful of your footing as it is a mountain path that takes just over 20 minutes one way, but the sense of accomplishment when you reach the top is incredible, as you can see mysterious spots such as wells and ponds along the way. The mountain path that leads from there to Mt. Shinzan is said to have been used by mountain ascetics for training.
(Translated by Google) The stone steps are said to have been built by an ogre in one night, with 999 steps. They are uneven and quite difficult to walk on, making the climb difficult. There are five shrines at the top, which give it a divine feel. There is a well along the way, and if you look into it and don't see a face in it, you know you don't have much further to go...but I was relieved when I did. I was worried about encountering a bear, but it was fine, as I carried a bear bell with me as I climbed. Please be careful if you go.
(Translated by Google) I found this on a local tourist map! I thought, "I have to go!" and looked at the map, and saw a bear! I read a review and it said there were 99 steps. I arrived, thinking that if I sprinted up the stairs, quickly paid my respects, and then sprinted back down, I might not be able to beat the bear. There were walking sticks at the entrance, so I picked the thickest one. I started swinging it around, thinking, "If a bear comes along, I'll smash it!" After passing a shrine with a somewhat Chinese feel, stone steps appeared. They were actually more like a rocky area with uneven steps. "Ninety-nine steps won't do!" I thought, and started climbing, but no matter how high I climbed, the shrine was nowhere to be seen. That's strange, isn't it? We hadn't even brought water, intending to head back soon. About halfway up, my companion noticed a rock. "Hey, it's not ninety-nine steps. It's nine hundred and ninety-nine steps!" What? Three nines? 999? That review was wrong! The person who wrote it! Ninety-nine steps are scarier than a bear! Hardship and hardship! Water! I finally arrived at the five shrines and went to the shrine office, but it was empty. It was me who took the plastic bottle of water from the office, leaving a 100-yen coin behind. There were also boxes of spare large plastic bottles. ヾ(゚д゚;)Sorry It was so hot I nearly collapsed on the brink of heatstroke, so please forgive me. Also, apparently the Akagami here is tall and incredibly handsome. The Goddess of Lake Towada fell in love with her. Kurokami of Tsugaru heard rumors that the Goddess of Lake Towada was beautiful, so he came to see her and fell in love at first sight. Kurokami (Raoh) and the tall, handsome Akagami (a skinny, slender Kenshiro) fought over the Goddess of Lake Towada (Yuria). Akagami lost the one-on-one fight with Kurokami. Kurokami is Yuria! From today on, you're mine! He cried out in a loud voice, but the goddess brushed off his hand and went to join Akagami, who had fled to Oga with an injured hand. They had three children and lived happily ever after. This is the epic love story. The five shrines are said to enshrine Akagami, Megami, and their three children. It was worth climbing the arduous 999 stone steps. To worship at the shrine, one must climb a stone staircase said to have 999 steps from the fishing village at the base. Currently, you can access the middle of the stairs from a parking lot (75m above sea level) halfway up the mountain, making the climb a little easier than from the base. The following legend about an oni (demon) surrounds these 999 stone steps: Once upon a time, the villagers at the foot of Goshado were troubled by the violent behavior of oni (demons) who would appear every night and wreak havoc on the village. The villagers then proposed a deal to the oni: if they could build 1,000 stone steps in one night, they would offer up one of their daughters every year in exchange. One night, the oni began building the steps at an incredible pace, and by the time dawn broke, they had built 999 steps. The villagers, panicked, had Amanojaku imitate the sound of the first rooster crowing, "Cock-a-doodle-doo." When the demons heard this, they mistakenly thought it was morning and ran off into the mountains without completing the 1000th step, and the deal fell through. The demons never came to the village again, and the villagers were spared the need to offer their daughters to the demons. And happily ever after. (Translated by Google) It has a tranquil atmosphere. I walked a little way up the mountain from a side path, and the leaves began to turn red. Looking closer, I spotted monkshood flowers in bloom. Goshado's historical background lies in the history of Akagami Shrine, which was originally established as a training center for ascetic practices, and is deeply connected to legends and faith. The current building was constructed in 1710, but its origins date back to 1216, when the Seven Sanno Shrines of Mount Hiei were enshrined, and it later became a group of five shrines. The 999 stone steps leading up to Goshado are also closely linked to the legend of the origins of Namahage, and are said to have been built overnight by an ogre as part of a bet with the villagers. Founding and Origins: Akagami Shrine dates back to ancient times, when Jikaku Daishi built the temple during the Jogan era (around 860). Invitation from Mt. Hiei: It is said that in the Kamakura period (1216), Minamoto no Sanetomo invited the Seven Sanno Shrines of Mt. Hiei to build Goshado. Origins of Namahage: Legend has it that the 999 stone steps leading up to Goshado were built in one night by demons. These demons were transformed into five bats brought by Emperor Wu of the Han dynasty, and this legend is said to be the origin of Namahage. Bet with the Demons: It is said that after a bet with villagers, the demons were unable to complete the stone steps and fled back into the mountains, and Goshado was dedicated to these five demons. There's a large, free parking lot with toilets and a park with playground equipment. On calm, windless days, the blue sky and clouds are reflected in the mirror-like water, earning it the nickname "Akita's Uyuni Salt Flats" and creating a buzz on social media. Early morning and evening are apparently the best times to take photos. Unfortunately, there was wind when I visited, and it was around 9:30 p.m., so I couldn't see the Uyuni Salt Flats-like scenery. However, the water was still very clear, and the view was beautiful. At low tide, the shallows stretch for 200 meters, exposing the rocky seabed. This is a rare shallow coastline in Japan, so even though the waves are crashing in the distance, you can see the spray from afar. It was a truly magical sight. When the tide goes out, the seabed, made up of winding strata, appears, and it is said that the shape of these strata has earned it the nickname "Devil's Washboard." Also, during spring tides, you can see scattered hard lumps called "Azukiiwa," a mixture of mud and minerals containing calcium and magnesium. The waters near the shore were still shallow, as on this day I saw someone halfway through who appeared to be fishing or catching something.

It was amazing 🤩🤩 everything was blue no wonder it's called the blue heaven
Went during the last weekend of June and the hydrangeas were in full bloom! I preferred going during the day because the flowers looked naturally vibrant. For the night light up they use blue lights which gave the flowers a bit of an artificial looking tint. It gets crowded so I'd recommend going early. If you're going to the night light-up get there by 6:30.
Spectacular hydrangeas! A must-see if you are in the area around late June-early July.
(Translated by Google) Hydrangeas at Unshoji Temple (June 30, 2025) This was the main event of the trip, and we went there to coincide with the full bloom. Basic information Opening hours Daytime 9:00-17:00 (last entrance 16:30) Evening 18:45-21:30 (last entrance 21:00) Day and night shift system Variable fee system (several stages according to the best viewing time, and varies depending on the combination of weekdays, weekends, and holidays) Day and night are charged separately (same for 🅿) ・ ・ ・ I saw the news about Unshoji Temple Blue before, and my wish has finally come true. After entering the entrance, I was greeted by a lush array of hydrangeas, and when I passed through the mountain gate, the rumored main area was on the right, and both the main hall side and the sea side from the observation deck were worth seeing and were wonderful. I was surprised at the size of the flower water fountain (a pot about 30 cm in diameter) The bamboo forest has a lovely Japanese umbrella object. The only goshuin available were written notes. When I entered the main hall, the decorations were magnificent, and a dragon god was enshrined at the back. As I left the exit, I saw Babahera ice cream, a specialty of Akita, and it was the limited edition Unshoji blue, a color I'd never seen before (even the cone), and it was delicious. The admission fee on this day was ¥1000 during the day and ¥1200 at night, and the parking fee was ¥500 each, with a day and night rotation system. If you visit both during the day and when the lights are on, it's quite expensive at over ¥3k, and personally I would like the temporary closing time to be shortened and a discounted pass to go through (^_^;) It's about 15km from Oga Station on the Oga Line, and there are local trains (1 train/h) and buses (1 train/2h), and the last bus is early (not possible at night) I think most people use their own cars or taxis, but there is a day and night rotation system, and there are intervals between opening hours, and the admission fee and parking fee are collected separately for day and night, so I felt that they had a strong business spirit considering they are attracting people to the remote area. For people living in the Kanto region, the timing of the flowers blooming and the weather is honestly not good value for money (^_^;) (Amahiki Kannon in Ibaraki Prefecture, famous for its underwater flowers, ducks, peacocks, etc., is also difficult to access by public transport, and an entrance fee has been charged since this year, but the entrance fee is 500 yen and you can enter and exit freely on the day, including the lighting, and the flowers are free) I've written a lot about it, but I'm sure I'll end up going back again (lol) (Original)

Researching temples lead me to this particular one and Oga in general (which I have to say, Oga was a highlight of my entire Japan trip). The Temple is immaculately maintained and the people working here are so friendly. The view from the temple bell tower is great (make sure you ring the bell, it is okay to do so).
