Large dairy farm with hands-on activities, horseback-riding tours & eats like soft-serve ice cream.
Slide 1 of 8
Lovely place for both adults and kids! Soft ice cream, fresh milk, archery, horsebsck riding, lots of space for a picnic or resting in a hammock. Every activity has a small fee 500-1000 yen. Easy access from Morioka station - 30 mins by bus (750 yen by suica or cash). Only a few buses per day! Last bus back 16:00. Not crowded at all on Friday.
Date of enjoyment: 15/4/25 Came down here on a rainy Tuesday, there weren’t many tourist/visitors. The car park is free and massive, upon entry you will find a vast land that is reminiscent country setting in the western world. We went straight for the buggy and it was tough work. There were also museums for shelter from the rain and cold, we spent most of our time in the souvenir shop as there are diary products that is as good as Hokkaido, we tried theit butter cake and yes it is delicious. They also have a soft serve which is very strong diary flavour and trust me you don’t need any other toppings just straight up goodness. The viewing to the milking cows require a separate ticket and a walk outside of the park of which visitors will find that the scenery is not as magical in spring when spring blossom have yet to bloom. There’s also ramen and pizzas restaurant for a taste Koiwai Farm. Allow roughly 2hrs of time for a single visit.
Drove about an hour from Akita—not too far, but just enough to feel like a proper escape. Koiwai Farm lives up to its reputation as a peaceful, working dairy farm set in a stunning natural landscape. The highlight was wandering through the animal barns. We visited the cows (where the famous milk comes from), watched the sheep grazing, and even saw a few horses. It’s hands-on without being overcrowded, and the animals are clearly well cared for. A great experience, especially for families or anyone who enjoys a slower, rural pace. Of course, the real star is the Koiwai milk—fresh, creamy, and genuinely delicious. You can taste the quality the moment it hits your tongue. Worth the trip alone. We also tried the on-site pizza made with their own cheese, and it was outstanding: rich, melty, and perfectly baked. Paired with a rainy afternoon, the cozy place felt like a warm shelter with sweeping views of the misty fields outside. Service was friendly and efficient, and the whole place has a relaxed, authentic charm. No over-the-top tourist gimmicks—just good food, fresh air, and a real farm experience. Conclusion: Highly recommend. If you’re in Akita, getting back to Sendai and looking for a scenic, tasty, and low-key outing, Koiwai Farm is a gem.
It is a very enjoyable farm even though there were only 5 horses when we visited in April. It was a clear sunny day when we visited, the green pasture against the clear blue sky was incredible. All was worth while. It was tranquillizing to walk around the premise and enjoy the milk, yogurt, beef skewers, baked potatoes and soft cream. It probably will be more exciting in summer should there be more animals around.
A pleasant family activity, but pretty pricey. Everything inside the farm, except visiting the “other side”, where the cows are, is additional charge. We joined the 40-minute tractor tour “around the farm”, but it turned out to be a snail-slow forest tour, probably no longer than 2km, with a Japanese language only narrator. The food at the farm is okay, but pricey. The homemade milk products are tasty. We found the farm side more worthwhile and more charming.
A very chill place. The farm is very big divided into two sections, good for couples date and the best for family trip either way young kids. I like the archery, it’s pretty cool. Remember to traste both the milk and milk ice cream, very rich and delicious. Lucky to see some Sakura blossoming. 2025 Spring
Not worth the trip. No sheep or horse to see today. Most activities close for the day. All experience is addition cost and not included in the entrance’s fee. Entrance’s fee ¥800 but nothing much to see. You can’t bring back the milk and must consume in the park.Quite disappointing
Came late afternoon, did not visit the farm as several activities were not in operation. Went to the shop instead and enjoyed the dairy products. Yoghurt was superb.

Landmark stratovolcano in Towada-Hachimantai National Park with a challenging hike to the summit.

Mount Iwate (岩手山, Iwatesan) is an active stratovolcano located in the Iwate Prefecture of Japan. It stands at 2,038 meters (6,686 feet) and is the highest peak in the prefecture. The mountain is a popular destination for outdoor activities, such as hiking and skiing, especially during the summer and winter months. It is also an important landmark, visible from many parts of Iwate Prefecture. Mount Iwate is part of the larger Iwate volcanic region and is known for its scenic beauty, with a well-defined, symmetrical shape. Its summit features a crater lake, which is an iconic spot for visitors. The area surrounding the mountain is rich in nature, and it's a key spot for those interested in exploring Japan's volcanic landscapes.
The mountain scenery seen from the train station and the rural village is lovely.
My Japanese sister brought me and my colleagues to see the remains of the Lava Flow from Mount Iwate. For the first time my colleagues and I see stretch of formation of solids lavas and you can see small pines trees growing from the solidy Lava... an amazing sight with the snow starting to melt at this time late April 2019...
Iwate san is one of the most popular hiking areas in Tohoku. It is steep and quite challenging. Good hiking shoes and walking sticks are highly recommended as it gets very slippery because of the small rocks. There are 7 different trails. I used Yanagisawa trail which starts at Umagaeshi camp ground. There are three big parking lots where you can park hour car and get ready. There is cold tasty water fountain and bathrooms here. Yanagisawa is the most popular trail among the others. Approx. 5.5 km in total and 4hrs 25 min suggested ascending time. Descending is also very challenging and suggested time is 3hrs 15 min. I made it less then 6 hrs including the Ohachi meguri round walk at the top. Umagaeshi is 633 m high and the peak is 2038 m. So the altitude change is about 1400 m. The steepness start right away and continues all the way up. There are lots of places you can enjoy the view if the weather is nice. On the 8th station there is a big hut and natural water fountain. Very relaxing place and best place for taking break. It is around 2000 yen per night including sheets etc. The guy was very friendly. After a short break I decided to make the peak first and come back here for a longer break. From the point it is not very challenging except a short distance to climb the hill. Use the right to climb the hill and left to round the loop at the top. This will be easier. After the 2.5 station the route is split into two. The right one is the new road which is a bit longer but goes through the forest. It is more shady. The old road is open, there is not much trees and very rocky. You can enjoy the view but I found this one more challenging since it was slippery. I went up from the new road and down from the old one. There were beautiful flowers on the way. I posted here. It was totally fun and great hiking. Hope this comment is helpful.
The crown jewel in the long string of magnificent mountain experiences available in Iwate! On a nice day the views are simply epic!
Picturesque views all around the mountains and volcanoes, well worth a visit if it's a sunny day.

The rest area in Shizukuishi, Anekko, is very polar with people travelling between Iwate and Akita préfectures. On the way to Akita, it's the last stop before reaching the mountain pass. There is also a hot spring and a campground. If you drive an EV, it's the last charging station before the mountains.
(Translated by Google) I used it to sleep in my car. The items sold inside are mainly local products. There are camping facilities, bathing facilities, etc. nearby, so it is a lively place. However, it seems that the opening hours of the surrounding facilities are short, which is not suitable for sleeping in your car. There are no convenience stores nearby, so you need to make preparations in advance. (Translated by Google) Stopped in on August 30, 2025 I took a bath, had lunch, and went shopping. The soft serve ice cream here comes in a mix of Hitomebore and milk soft serve ice creams, and I ordered the mix (350 yen). The milk soft serve ice cream was quite rich, while the Hitomebore soft serve definitely had the rice flavor. Both were moderately sweet and hot, so I ate them all in one go. The souvenir shop also had the same warm tomato noodles I had earlier, as well as a variety of local vegetables from Iwate, Akita, and other parts of the Tohoku region, which was a bit overwhelming. As for the essential roadside station features, while the restrooms were clean, the information center's air conditioning was weak, making it a bit muggy, which was a bit disappointing. There is ample parking, but there was a line after noon. I'd like to stop by again if I'm here again. As you'd expect from a sake-producing area, they also sell a variety of sake. There's a river running behind the facility, but it's a shame it's hard to see. One of the best ski resorts we have been to in Japan. Not so crowded and spacious ski tracks. Good staff and great cafeteria. Highly recommended.
It has a nice variety of couses on different aspects. There was good snow with plenty of powder on the days I went there. They don't want you riding in the trees, but plenty of people do and while not very long, some of the trees had decent grades and spacing. It's a bit weird catching a short ropeway (cable car) up and then pretty much 2 more chairs before you get to ski more than flat terrain or link to the next lift. The mid-mountain restaurant is very disappointing, although I have never seen such efficient staff in my life. Man, they work hard and fast. The building is small and cold, with a central choke point - people ordering from the ticket machine back-to-back with the line waiting to place or receive their order. It is almost always crowded and there were times when multiple tables were being guarded by someone "waiting for my friends". They need to knock the building down and build a new one. I guess the Prince Hotel at the bottom has a restaurant, but why would you go down there and start all over. I wouldn't (didn't) go there on weekends, but after initially not liking the resort, I warmed to it and one afternoon of relentless, intense snowfall gave me the best fun skiing, maybe ever.
- The skiing condition was great genuinely. If there was snowing, the snow was quite dry and built up fast for easy powder skiing. The ski patrol was very responsible. Once snowing started to be heavy, they patrolled on the piste to make sure skiers/snowboarders were safe (the resort is very popular for beginners and intermediate). - not windy usually
Best ski resort in Tohuku. Everything is good. If the sunshine lift is a high speed quad lift with covering shelter, then things are perfect. Prince Hotel management, if you see this comment, please consider this seriously.
Got some nice, short good runs in the middle sections. Would be good if they got a Gondola running from the bottom to the top. Good for a day or 2.
Great mountain to ski or board on. Friendly staff at the Prince hotel. Enormous runs but it a pity that several of the ski lifts are no longer operating. Snow isn’t the best this year but after a good powder dump, this place would be magic!! I would definitely come back here again.
Shizukuishi is ideal for intermediate and advanced skiers for a warm-up session prior to a multi-days ski holiday; otherwise, there aren’t adequate number of pistes available. Don’t rely on the only cable car because it operates in 10-15 minutes intervals; use chair lifts instead.
This ski resort resembles something out of the 80's, you can see this place has had it's boom and is now just holding on. Almost half the lifts have gone into disrepair and are no longer in operation! So you can only ski half the mountain, not that there's much else going on here.

Best powder around. Nice and chill and never overly crowded. Fun forest runs and plenty of hot spring options (lots of tattoo friendly ones also) around the area.
- IC card lift pass - Only a few pistes in the ski resort, lifts are slow. But as mainly visited by locals, there was no crowd. Some foreigners come for snow shoeing and back/side country skiing - We concurred with a foreign website which made this place known to us that this is a nice little hidden gem.
Would be 5 stars if the ski resort let you ski in the trees. Ski patrol are not friendly. They will need to change if they want to attract more tourists.
I love this place. The only reason for 4 stars, not 5 is, well, it's very Japanese. Lifts open when they do and there's only 3 on weekdays and 4 on weekends. It has the best value ski pass, especially for seniors and the lady and gentleman at the ticket desk were friendly and patient. There's enough left ungroomed with the limited rider numbers for plenty of powder without venturing into the trees, but many do that anyway. Every chair is brushed clear of snow for you and the lift operators help everyone on. These are serious men. It took many days before anyone responded to my thank you's. So funny. The ladies in the downstairs eatery were lovely every time. It also doubles as a drying room and brown bag lunch area for locals. It's really warm and so is the main restaurant upstairs, especially when the sun shines (which was rare because it snowed so much this month). I will have fond memories of Amihari and I made sure my last day of skiing this year was there. Quite a number of powder runs will certainly help those memories.
Amihari shi area is a medium level ski area in Shizukuishu. It has a great view over the city.
It was okay, but the snow level is really low this year! It would be interesting to go back when there was a more normal base. The runs themselves were okay but there were still patches of earth and grass showing through.
Loved it, great experience overall for snowboarding.
That was a amazing place.

Awesome experience powder powder powder. No people Great gondola Extremely helpful lift attendees
I think it's the place to go when groomers are the best option. There is limited ungroomed on powder days and because of that, it's either new snow over bumps, or limited, narrow sections on the edge of trails. I understand why they don't want people in the trees, because of terrain traps, but it would be safer if they did open up some tree riding. There are plenty of places they could. I saw people do stupid things like ride down creek lines. It's on a volcano for goodness sake. The water is likely to melt the snow from underneath, so why risk death like that and why risk uninformed customers doing it? The gondola is great on cold days and accesses the full vertical. The lift operators load and unload your equipment on the gondola and are friendly. In fact, all the lift staff were great. The restaurant is huge, so you always get a seat. It's quite warm too with good views. Staff were nice. So, 3 stars because it has so much more potential and because there's a limited variety of courses.
- Gondola available to speed up the acessing time (though old style) - only a few pistes in the ski resort, suitable for beginners and intermediate - Night skiing available every night at the peak season - we went on a weekday and some pistes were closed. - the cafeteria provided hot meal sets, no hot drinks. bottled drinks from vending machine. Soft ice-cream tasted nice.
Good beginners ski in mid to end of April
The place was not too big but the night ski experience was fun.
Too much fun! A must in Iwate if you have children!!

It's beautiful all-year-round, but is famous for being the first area in all of Honshu to turn red in the fall, with the reds coming out as early as mid-September. These photos were taken on September 25, 2019. It's a hike that can be done by people of all ages. I've personally hiked to the summit a few dozen times. It's always beautiful and I love coming back to see the changes over the seasons and feel the crisp clean air.
(Translated by Google) October 4, 2023 is the best time to see the autumn leaves! I climbed from Omatsukura Gate. I thought it would be crowded, so I aimed for an early morning on weekdays, and arrived at the end of the forest road a little after 5:00. Start climbing before 6:00. There was plenty of parking space, and the mountain was empty. As the sun gets higher, the number of people and cars increases considerably. I think it will be extremely crowded this weekend. If possible, go early on a weekday morning 😅 The mountain trail becomes very muddy. Wear at least mid-cut shoes such as Gore-Tex. There are brushes placed where the water runs down the forest road, so you can wash your shoes with your shoes on on the way home. It would be better to have gaiters too. Actually, there were some people like that, but rain boots are fine (the climbing itself is easy). The peak at the summit (1,400m) had already passed, and on this day, the peak was around 1,200m-1,300m at Mitsuishi Sanso. This year, the leaves seemed to reach their peak the week before the three-day weekend, so I thought the week before would be a good time to see the autumn leaves near the summit. The leaves at the summit were almost gone, but the 360-degree view from the summit was spectacular! I took the Matsukawa Onsen-Mitsuishiyama route. Even during the three-day weekend, there were few hikers. There were many tree tunnels, making visibility poor. It's scary to think that it would be difficult to escape if a bear appeared. As a hiking trail, the path is wide and has many staircases, making it relatively easy to walk. However, the drainage is poor, so there are many muddy areas and it can get dirty easily. However, there are few waiting times and it's easy to walk. (Translated by Google) I stopped by on a casual note during my trip, but I was betrayed in a good way. First of all, it is close to the exhibits. You can even touch pieces of real Jomon pottery. The exhibits are not limited to the Jomon period, but are a compact collection of folklore materials from the Edo to Showa periods. The adjacent Nanbu Magiya is also worth seeing, and everything is authentic. If you're lucky, the museum director, who looks like Hayao Miyazaki, will give you an enthusiastic explanation. This was a big gain from this trip. I might want to move to Shizukuishi (lol) (Original)

This museum, dedicated to the preservation of history and the local language, was established in 1974 with the aim of preserving the local culture and everyday tools that would be submerged by the construction of Gosho Dam. It embodies the local community's desire to preserve for future generations what would otherwise be lost. Aerial photographs (from October 10, 1972 and 1983) and ancient documents are also on display, allowing visitors to visually trace what the area once looked like, creating a sense of continuity from past to present. Paleolithic pottery and stone tools. Folk and agricultural implements. Everyday tools from the Edo period to the early Showa period. There's also an interesting display of local industrial techniques, such as weaving (Shizukuishi's specialty "Kikkoori") and rafting. Exhibits showcasing folklore and religious culture, including Edo-period martial arts scrolls and woodblock printing blocks for shrine talismans. The 115-day travelogue, which transcends a pilgrimage to Ise Shrine, is perhaps no different from a round-the-world trip for those of that time.
