A big, beautiful, and historic park in Akita city. You can easily walk to here from city centre. And there is a Akita Arts Theatre Mille Has around the entrance. Visitors can also have a short break at the Art Theatre. If visited this park at the right time, guess the red leaves or green leaves can show a different view of this park.
It was chilly in the evening but had a great view of the SkyTree tower at night.
A park located in the center city of Akita. This site is the former castle of SATAKE family, who was the Lord of Akita. There is a reconstructed gate, a museum imitated the original exterior of castle, and a shrine honoring the SATAKE family.
One of the historical public parks in Akita. It had been the castle, now it belongs to Akita city. Very beautiful red leaves in a Japanese style garden. There are fountain with carp fishes, lotus pond, Japanese shrines and others. Free to visit. It's very nice and relaxing for us.
This park is a wonderful place to enjoy yourself together with the Akita community, It is a beautiful place that is especially beautiful during the cherry blossom festivals
I came here during the summer. Experiences: There was a street market festival/bazaar going on at the time of visit, where there are many interesting food and crafts for sale around the entrance to the park. There is also a bridge surrounded by large orchids which is the photo-ops place to go. There are a few landmarks in the park, such as the castle ruins, where you can learn some history about the region. There is a also a akita inu experience next to the cafe, which lets you encounter the large sized akita doggo without touching. Price: admission and akita dog experience is free. Duration: About 2-3 hours excluding time spent on the bazaar. Overall, I enjoyed the park as a short excursion while in Akita.
After a last minute change of plans, we found ourselves in Akita for a few hours longer on a drizzly Friday morning in June than expected. We were hanging around to see the Akita inu at "Akita Dog Station" that didn't open until 11AM and stumbled across this park nearby while walking around earlier that morning. I honestly wish I had known about this park earlier. It was the quintessential Japanese park with little shrines, a mini waterfall, garden, woods, bamboo and even a small eatery and gift shop. We didn't have time to do any eating or shopping, nor did we have time to go into the small museum located in a restored building. Instead we spent it just walking around the garden areas and enjoying being outside of the city. If you're in Akita, do yourself a favor and block out a few hours to give this park and surrounding areas some of your time, you won't regret it.
Visited on January 8th. There was a light amount of snow and it was a fantastic atmosphere. There were hardly any tourists so I was able to sightsee comfortably.

Museums
Works by painter & printmaker Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita are the main focus at this modern museum.
Slide 1 of 8
Designed by Tadao Ando, part of the appeal of the museum is its architecture. There was a special exhibition by Kiborino Konno featuring woodcraft that mimics food. There is a cafe - shop overlooking the water feature on the second floor and offering views of the former Akita castle and park.
The Fujita Tsuguharu exhibit was really interesting and the huge painting of Akita was amazing! It's worth a visit just to see the architecture, the staircase is so cool. The cafe is also a great place to spend time with huge windows and a great view. A great place to watch the snow. The roll cake was one of the best I've tasted too!
You can come to visit the cafe without having to pay for entrance ticket. The cafe has a beautiful view of the roof infinity pool.
安藤忠雄又一力作 small museum and Ando styled concrete geometry outside . The triangular portal and concrete staircase is a masterpiece inside. The crowning glory is the full length cafe on second floor using the balcony as a reflecting pond taking in the scenary of the orchestral hall and 千秋公園across the street . Better spend time here with a coffee than entering the museum per se
I really liked it, the architecture is amazing, good artworks and the view from the cafe is absolutely beautiful. By the way, the usucha made at the cafe was PERFECT, better than in a lot pf specialiced tea houses
Great museum. I'm usually not the biggest fan of brutalist architecture, but it fits the vibe theyre going for with the place. The current paid exhibition is stunning, a massive, at least 15m long panel painting that the artist completed in only 2 weeks. Its ridiculous and amazing. The free exhibition is great too, 3 massive sheets of printed fabric and paintings to go along with them. Its worth a visit if you find yourself in Akita
Tadao Ando has created another wonderful piece of architecture.
The special exhibit was exciting, and the architecture is stunning too. However, I wish the special exhibit ticket also included entrance to the permanent exhibit too. Instead, I had to buy two tickets. The permanent collection is nice but small.

Free observatory deck at 100m high. Great sunset view of Nippon Sea. First floor is local market. Good idea and concept.
Solid use of a tower to enhance a roadside station. Great views and entry is free. Prices in the market appear just a little higher than other markets, but not prohibitively.
2025.11.01 Sat Some event is going on.. The Akita Police car and motorbike look so cool. View from 5th floor at the Observation tower was enjoyable.
What a grand tower by the seaside/Harbour. And the visit to the top was FOC - free! I was very surprised. Food for lunch was ok, simple, nothing much to shout about. After lunch we went to the top view; And subsequently had coffee at one of the other restaurants below. Nice scenery to see the shore line, windmill fans lining the coastal line too!
Very good shopping for local Akita things. Awesome that they do not charge to go up the elevator. Spectacular view.
Drove into this roadside station on the way to the Nahagame museum at oga from Akita city. We were captivated by the beautiful port scenery and that’s the reason why we stopped. After stopping, we went into it and saw that there were eateries inside it. But maybe it was too early, it was not opened yet. But the souvenir shop had opened and there were many local items for sale. Washrooms were clean as well. After which I went over to the harbour area to take some pictures and saw a naval vessel docked.
Great place to see the Japan sea especially when the weather is clear ...the entrance is free and there's a coffee place where you can enjoy the view with a some ice cream
This where cruise ships dock. Nothing special about the place. Do not go for the cruise ship options. There is a train stop 5mins walk away and you can get into the city for 200 yen per person, versus the 25 USD the cruise charges

Tower of a former fortress in Akita. The history is very interesting. The view over the city from the top floor is particularly worth seeing. Admission is not expensive, 150 yen per person. Therefore, a visit can be worthwhile.
Interesting restored castle tower. Exhibits show the history of the samurai clan, silver mining, and cedar tree forestry. The fourth floor has spectacular view of Akita City. We got discounted tickets for being cruise passengers. The park has beautiful trees and a shrine
100 yen entrance fee, but you can keep your shoes on. No English pamphlet but the QR codes found on exhibits are sufficient, and does a good job explaining the history. The view on the top/4F is nice considering it is not a very tall structure.
A must visit when in Akita. A wonderful insight into the Satake Sho-gun family history. Interesting museum area on ground and 2nd floors. City views 360 deg from the 4th floor from indoor or outdoor balconies.
I didn't go up as my time in the park was limited, but definitely worth going up. 100 yen admission fee only and you can tell it's very well maintained. If you don't want to go down the same route when you're leaving, take the small flight of staircase next to the washroom just behind the building.
Beautiful in winter. Admission: free
Simple and inexpensive castle to visit. Entrace fee is only 100 yen. Situated at the top of the hill and only accessible by foot. It takes around 20 minutes from Akita Station. View of Akita city from 3rd floor of castle is very good.
Pleasant walk thru park to toower.

Came here for the nokkedon, which is a build-your-own rice bowl dish. I was not disappointed! The hardest part was finding the right place for the nokkedon. There isn't anyone trying to sell the bowl, it's just a self-service counter. At least once you find it (see the pictures), it has plenty of instructions, some in english, but most of it is in Japanese. Luckily Google translate works really well here. The counter has a map with the participating stores, including the place to get the rice. The rice store doesn't look like a rice shop at all, but once I got there, the lady knew right away and got some rice for me. Then, just go to whatever participating store there is and pick any sashimi that you like! There are plenty of tables to eat your bowl, so finding a spot was not a problem! Just be mindful the nokkedon is available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Have fun! ---- Came back 1 day later. The rice place had changed, and now they were selling boxed rice in the store in front of the stand. It was less fresh but still good enough as there was a microwave to heat it up.
This fish market in Akita is an absolute gem for seafood lovers! It’s a vibrant, bustling place where you can truly experience the local food culture. The highlight for me was the make-your-own sashimi donburi experience—going stall to stall, choosing from an incredible variety of fresh fish, and then having it all served over a bowl of perfectly seasoned rice. It doesn’t get fresher than this! The selection is fantastic—tuna, salmon, uni, ikura, and many other seasonal catches, all at very reasonable prices. Each vendor was friendly and happy to explain their offerings, making the experience both fun and educational. Beyond the seafood, there’s also a great variety of fresh regional fruits and local specialties, perfect for a snack or to take home as souvenirs. The market itself is clean, well-organized, and easy to navigate, with plenty of seating areas to enjoy your freshly prepared meal. If you’re visiting Akita, this market is a must-stop for a truly authentic and delicious experience. You’ll leave with a happy stomach and probably a few bags of local treats! Highly recommended for anyone who loves fresh seafood and wants a taste of local life.
Not as well organized as aomori's nokkedon, but we eventually managed to individually order our seafood bowl for a great value. We recommend the tarako and mentaiko!
A place to find cheap and fresh fish and products. You can buy ready to eat sashimi directly from many fresh fish stalls. The name of the product is "Nokkedon", literally "put everything on the rice bowl, and eat." Go to the designated "Nokkedon" desk to get tray and start with, go to rice stall to buy a bowl of rice, and miso soup for free, you will need to buy fried foods for best taste with sashimi, and go to every fresh fish stalls that sell ready-to-eat sashimi you like; You can choose every kind of sashimi you like with very cheap prices. And finally go to many available tables to put (nokke) your sashimi on your rice bowl, and eat.
Interesting produce and fish market to visit. A large number of fresh fish and crustacean species caught in local waters and local seasonal vegetable and fruit produce. There is a small booth area within the market that is a historical display of old photographs and memorabilia on Akita as a fishing village several hundred years ago that I found really interesting. Search it out. Best visited early in the day. There are a few little eateries around the edges of the market for a fishy bite to eat.
We were here at 11am on a Friday during winter. Fresh produce / seafood market. Clean market, it was nice to look around without any tourists~
You can eat fresh tuna and clambs if you want!

The building is historic, over 100 years old. The display of goods produced locally is impressive. Definitely worth a visit.
From the outside the building is very nice. Unfortunately all the shutters were down and looked like it had been that way for some time. There was a sign on the front door but couldn't understand it. If your planning on coming to see this building from the inside, it'd be well worth investigating whether it's going to be open. Still nice to see from the outside though.
A small museum in a former bank with a modern block attached showcasing artworks by artists like Kawase Hasui and Katsuhira Tokushi.
This is the former bank building constructed in 1912. Fireplaces and beautiful old decorations remain. Many of Tokushi KATSUHIRA (1904-1971)'s prints are also on display. He was an artist who has drawn traditional Akita scenes, agricultural landscapes, shrine festivals, playing children, and so on.
every japan northern city has a similar building which is the old central prefertural bank . This is our third one after 盛岡and 山形。 This is also surprisingly the smallest one . Free exhibits of the trading hall and lovingly maintained walls and ceilings. 大正 nostalgia all around
Good place to spend an hour or so out of the cold of Akita city.
Cool history and building! Worth a little stop. Co-entry ticket with the Kanto Festival Museum available.

(Translated by Google) Among the many festivals in Japan, isn't this one one that ranks quite high? When viewed from a distance, the many lanterns that resemble ears of rice flicker dreamily, and when viewed up close, you can see the Sashite exhibiting their strength and skill, making it a completely different scene to enjoy in the same place. Compared to the ``dynamic'' Aomori Nebuta, I got the impression that Kanto was more of a ``quiet'' lantern, but when I looked at it closer, I realized that the kanto was also ``dynamic''.
(Translated by Google) I traveled to Akita that October, and one night, falling on a Saturday, I stumbled upon the Akita Kanto Festival. I later researched it and discovered it's a traditional festival held annually from Tanabata to Obon, a major August event. I still don't understand why I saw it in October. The Kanto resembles ears of rice, and the hanging lanterns resemble rice bags, symbolizing a wish for a good harvest. The largest, called "Owaka," features 46 lanterns suspended from a 12-meter-long bamboo pole, weighing a staggering 50 kilograms! The pole-holders, carrying the lanterns on their hands, foreheads, shoulders, and waists, demonstrate incredible strength and balance, a truly impressive feat. The sheer number of participants made for a truly spectacular spectacle, and I was incredibly lucky to have witnessed this festival.
(Translated by Google) The name "Kanto" was coined by the mayor of Akita to commemorate the Emperor's arrival in Akita during his tour of Tohoku. On the day of the festival, numerous lanterns are tied to bamboo poles. These lanterns vary in size, but are arranged in a precise pattern. Some people use their foreheads, shoulders, and waists to support the poles, which are crammed with numerous lanterns. This is a test of balance. The accompanying HAYASI music and commands ignite the enthusiasm and energy of the crowd, inspiring everyone to applaud and arouse the performers' eagerness to perform. The crowd was enormous, with seats available along the street for free and those in the central divider requiring tickets. This has generated significant tourism revenue for Akita City. This unique lantern hanging display has also generated significant business opportunities for Akita, continuing the centuries-old tradition of the Kanto Festival.

The wind bends the bamboo tubes, creating a thrilling and impressive performance; sometimes they actually fall over. Rather than watching this on TV, I recommend actually looking up at them from below and experiencing the thrill for yourself. There are also Kanto poles for children, who boldly take on the challenge in front of the crowds. When they are in a situation where they have no choice but to fall over, the adults watching firmly grab them and pass the chance to the next child. It's precisely because children have the opportunity to experience Kanto from a young age that this tradition is preserved. Since we didn't win the lottery for the new system presentation, we somehow managed to win, and of course we participated. The event starts at 2:20 p.m., and entry begins at 2:00 p.m. The morning's work was more exciting than I expected, and I left the customer just before 1:00 p.m. We ate lunch quickly and finally arrived around 2:40pm. The event had already begun, and President Iwase's greetings were almost over, and I managed to catch a two-shot with MC Shaba Dabao. After that, we divided into three parts and interviewed all the players. I was able to hear about my strong points and my goals for this season, both with laughter and with a serious look. The interviews with the new players are quite fresh, and I'm sure they'll be active this season! At the end, all the players appeared and the event ended with a greeting from Nakamura. This season marks the fourth year for J2. The goal is to enter the play competition. I believe that you will make it come true, and I will do my best to support you! The home opener will be against Sendai on March 16th. The next match is against Tochigi, a home match on March 20th. For the past two days, we have held an event to attract customers entitled ``10,000 People Support Project.'' We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible to help us achieve this goal. Akita Omoriyama Zoo , Akitashi Omoriyama dōbutsuen), also known as “Milve”, is a municipal zoo opened in July 1967 in the city of Akita, Akita Prefecture, Japan. Opened in 1972, the zoo covers 15 hectares, with 114 species on display. It is accredited by the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums The zoo is modeled after Asahiyama Zoo in Hokkaido with holding areas designed to mimic the animal’s natural habitat, and incorporating “action exhibits” where animal activity is encouraged, particularly during feeding time. The zoo began as a zoo attached to the Akita Prefectural Children’s Hall within the grounds of former Kubota Castle in October 1950. It was transferred to the control of Akita City in April 1953 and renamed the Akita City Children’s Zoo, and "Monkey Train ride" was very popular.[8][9] In September 1972, it was relocated to its present location. The zoo successfully bred the tanuki in captivity in 1974, followed by the barn owl in 1978, and Japanese marten in 1994. It also successfully artificially inseminated the black-backed jackal in 1990 and demoiselle crane in 1995. All of these successes were the first time for a zoo in Japan.
The trip was disappointing and heart-breaking. Although there are lots of animal species, some of their living environments were really bad when I visited (especially the penguin tank). Besides, some animals (wolf, bear) were constantly walking in circles, they look nervous and stressed out in their small living environment. I just hope the zoo reads this review and pays more attention to their animals.
As far as this ZOO compares to others around the world, very sad case of animals in small cages board to death!!! Tourists will struggle if they cannot understand Japanese as there is very little english to read with signage. Very 1970s The zoo needs more compassion towards the animals welfare. Cages were clean enough and animals look fed and had clean water. This ZOO won't last unless It's animals are better housed and mental health is improved. And a general clean up. The whole place is sad!!!!
This is my second visit in less than a year. Children under high school age are free so that was a big plus. There’s an attraction park there so my friend spent half the time there riding them. We enjoyed learning about the different animals. The elephant did seem a big lonely compared to a few months ago. Winter blues? Overall a great place and wheel chair friendly.
It was nice overall, many different kinds of animals. Some cages felt a bit small for the animals though.
It’s been so long that i did a review until i crossed this. I felt that this zoo deserve a 5 stars review as it’s really worth the trip and also way too spectacular. There are lot’s of variety and interactions with the animals up close and i mean real close, also the enclosure of the animals are pretty clean so there’s little smell to it and it’s really acceptable. Also, the food and service inside the zoo is affordable and pretty damn delicious. I was stuttered by the variety of things that the zoo has to offer and it’s got to be one of the best zoo i’ve been. I thought the whole trip was gonna take about 1 hour to explore but i was wrong. It took me 4 hours to finished everything because of the animals interaction up close and also their delicious food. I will definitely come back again. Both my wife and kid are very happy and we literally spend the entire day there with the animals. Also there is like a small amusement park sort of it. If you’re there best is to rent a car, it really convenient to move around. I will see you again Omoriyama Zoo! Thanks for showing me around
Small but beautiful place. Will visit soon again.
Comparatively small zoo but variety is good. Especially they have a pair of African elephants which I had not seen anywhere else in Japan. Tiger is also very big and healthy. Additional attraction is steam locomotive placed outside zoo. Slightly inconvenient to access. Takes 20 minutes with uphill slopes from Araya station.

My wife and I came here on Jan 17, 21 and 22. It’s a cosy airport especially on its departure floor with only one cafe where we had lunch on 21. While there is no train service, the public transportation is the Airport limousine. Its stop is just outside.
Typical rural airport. 50 mins to the city center. Good atmosphere with enough cafes and restaurants with great souvenir shop. The credit card lounge is very new and also good.
Very cool airport. Quite a lot of dog themes, which I loved! Staff at the information desk also helpful. I got on the limousine bus to Akita station, which you can tap on/tap off with your IC card (eg. Suica) or with cash when you get off the bus. It’s ¥1300 to the station.
It’s a typical local airport. Compacted one. But it’s renovated and modern. So I felt good! There are many good souvenirs and good restaurants. I love the Akita dog there!! Try to come!
A very small but very lovable airport. Lots of little shops for souvenirs, fun decorations everywhere, and easy to understand signage. Overall a great place to start or end a journey, and I would not have anything bad to say if someone told me they were landing here.
Efficient service, a large area where local products are sold, a couple of restaurants, coffee shop and comfortable seating available.
Very nice small airport. There's a bus that departs after each flight that arrives at this airport. You can pay with pasmo travel card. About 1 hour to akita train station.
A great little airport, especially for collecting visitors and flying out for a long time. They have long-term parking where you can leave your car for the duration of your trip for a reasonable fee. Online, it can be confusing to work out, but you can leave your car over 20 days, the fee just increases after twenty days. When parking to collect someone, the fee is free, which is great. You can also easily find the timetables for all flights, and because of its size, the airlines are understanding about coming in by bus and the bus timetables. Overall a nice airport. Though, they do have trouble landing with fog (ANA) and you can find your flight turned around at the last minute and sent back to Tokyo.

It's a fun spot with events regularly held, including "Akita Inu Station," where you can meet Akita dogs on weekends, restaurants serving breakfast, an art museum, and an exhibition space. The sounds of the street piano are pleasant, and the "Meguri Umbrella" umbrellas are very convenient for sudden rain showers. I hope the city center, including this area, becomes even more lively. Even though I have no sense of geography, it probably took less than 10 minutes to walk slowly from the station. There were various posters posted about business areas and local tourism, but there were so few people that I couldn't believe it was around 7pm on a Saturday evening lol. Are people looking at me as a tourist?! (I can't help it because I took a picture of the entrance to the museum after it closed with my smartphone in hand, haha) When I passed by the facility, I felt someone looking at me, and the moment I looked inside, I noticed that there were 7-8 people there. I made eye contact with a young man lol (Original)

A must-visit place to dine and buy souvenirs. Some stores don’t allow to take photos of video which is kind of awkward because taking photos and videos is one way of promoting their shop.
Nice shopping mall just next to the JR Station.
Very close to train station. Has 100 yen store here where you could easily grab your necessities if you're a Traveller. Lots of clothing store which you could browse in. There's a muji nearby. There's also plenty of food stores around and might be connected to the train station souvenirs and ohmiyages department where you could grab nice desserts.
The gateway to Akita. In adjacent TOPICO you get most souvenirs such as Akita's illustrations towels and foods. Because coin lockers are few, soon first come, first serve. If you are in the busy season, first of all lockers should be secured. If you do not mind, please press👍

The Picasso exhibition had works from the French National Library and showed Picasso at different times of his life. I liked the comparisons of various artists such as Manet, Gaughan, Rembrandt, and Rodin with Picasso's take on their work.
rather large gallery/museum. the exhibition here is worth seeing.
(Translated by Google) I went here to kill time while on a business trip to Akita, and it was much better than I expected. Mr. Fujita's large mural ``Akita Events,'' which appears to be part of the permanent exhibition, was a sight to behold. It was a wonderful mural to see up close and from afar. When you exit the museum, there is a cafe. The surface of the water reflecting the moat of Senshu Park that spread out in front of me was so beautiful. Whether you're alone or with someone special, it's a great place to spend some time relaxing without being pressed for time.

It houses a collection of paintings with ties to Akita, including Akita Ranga by artists such as Odano Naotake and Satake Shozan. Compared to the Akita Museum of Art, the number of visitors was more relaxed. The "Minebane Taguchi Art Collection" is being held in collaboration with the Akita Museum of Art until September 7, 2025. Admission is 1,500 yen for both museums. While there are works by well-known artists such as Nara Yoshitomo and Murakami Takashi, they are few in number. Instead, there are many works rarely exhibited in Japan, such as those from South America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, which demonstrate the broad appeal of the Taguchi father and son's interest in art. I felt this exhibition was the perfect introduction to contemporary art.
