Amazing experience living in a tulou ( 土樓) like a local, it was 10c at night but thank God for the heater and hot water shower. It is totally worth the longer trip for the authentic experience. PS Remember to bring your own instant coffee if you are a coffee addict! Homemade dinner made by the host was 280yan for 3 and simple breakfast was 15yan for 1. Boss lady is very friendly and hard working, I hope this place will forever stay authentic and non commercialised.
Very special ancient building although it's dilapidated and left few old folks living there.
The Chuxi tulou cluster in Yongding Fujian is the most primitive and most Hakka-characteristic Tulou clusters. With a history of 600 years ago, the Xu clan's ancestors migrated to the mountains to build tulou in order to escape war and bandits. The ancient Chinese believed that the sky was round and the earth was square, so the Chuxi tulou clusters can be divided into two shapes; round and square.
It's a beautiful small village. The architecture is very unique and full of traditional Chinese culture. The most unique feature is that people actually live in those buildings and you can observe how they live their daily life! Besides, there are many restaurants in the village that offers delicious local dishes. The price is fair too, unlike many tourism attractions.
Of all the tulou the Chuxi is my absolute fav. It’s maintained to near original authenticity without the touristy add ons. The tulou buildings are a sight to behold. If your legs are up to it, do take the short hike up the hill for an exquisite view of the structures from a vantage point
An interesting cluster of Hakka traditional round houses. It is funny that the USA thought these were nuclear missiles war head when they first spotted them from the spy plane high in the sky.
Very beautiful tulou cluster, i wish i could spend more time here to explore around. Worth the visit
Fantastic place! I took mom and her friends, over 70 years old stayed at Tulou's traditional homstay a night. Drove from Meizhou 2.30 hrs and bought the ticket for person who not over 60 years old, probably about 120 yuan (I'm not sure, you should ask them when arrive). Quite easy to access here! The room has heater and air condition, water heater, and boiler. The bed is quite comfy but noisy a bit. (I recommend 3rd floors but you need to carry the baggage to the upstair by self) There is the restaurant for served Hakka food to guests also. You can sightsee around Tuluo and walk up to the top of hill (beat up your heart a bit) for check in to the top of view. ( the opposit side of Tuluo). Hope you all great trip to there.

It's nice visiting and looking at these historical buildings
(Translated by Google) Earth building architecture is a living fossil of the wisdom of our ancestors! precious! How to revive the earth building life is a big question. come on! (Original) 土楼建築是先民智慧活化石!珍貴!如何讓土楼生活重現,這是大學問。加油!
Personally, I fell it is not really worth the trip into this building as I felt it was an intrusion into other's privacy. Just visiting and looking at the place from the outside is good enough.
(Translated by Google) If you're alone, the best way to see the scattered tulou is by taking a motorbike taxi on the back of a motorbike. It's probably something the locals do on their own, but they were very kind and it wasn't that expensive. (Original) 1人なら、散在する土楼を見て回るのには、バイクの後ろに乗るバイクタクシーがあります。多分地元の人が勝手にやってるのでしょうが、なかなか親切でそんなに高くなかった。

theres a lot of tulous to the village, you cant see all of it in one day. if you want a guide, there are a lot of them. if you start exploring, you will probably be approached by a lot of them. if you want to go up the tulou, there will be locals who will allow you to go up to their part of the tulou for a certain price, as it is illegal to go up the tulou. the whole village is beautiful, its a must-visit in fujian
This is the famous UNESCO site of a Hakka village. The location on the satellite view is a bit off, but it's easy to locate it. I arrived by car with a local and there are good signs in English on the way and huge car park. Luckily, I was visiting it during the Spring Festival, I can imagine why the car park is so big - must be a rather popular spot. Better to get a combined ticket for other Tulou (called King of Tulou - you'd need to drive another 3km down the road to get there) and I ignored the local tourist guides and just bought a ticket at the ticket office. There's a walkway that leads to the village or you can take a taxi in a golf car (for extra charge). There are lots of Earth Houses and all of them are really authentic with real people still leaving. A local grandpa approached us at one of the main buildings and offered to let us upstairs (we paid 10 RMB per person and he didn't speak any English and I don't understand why is it not regulated in a UN site, but hey) and take pictures. Otherwise, there are local who don't let you go up (signs say you can't go up). There's one square shaped building where you can actually go up and it is designed to be a museum, there are some rooms with paintings and models, make sure you don't miss it. Amazing site if you like to explore history, really lets you to feel the life at the older times.
It's a great place to visit and explore for Chinese culture and World Heritage. Strongly recommend you to go in an off-season tourism period.
This village has several interesting Tulous. The one called Fuyulou is a unusual tripartite rectangular one. There is also a large round house called Zhenchenglou. We stayed in a guesthouse called Changdi Guesthouse within the Fuyulou. I think it was the best way to experience life in the tulou as well as to enjoy home cooked Hakka food. There are all kinds of interesting agricultural activities in the village. You can enjoy the local vegetables, mushrooms, tobacco, tea and fruits, all at very low cost. There is even a rice wine maker. For less than $9 we got a 2 hour tour of the roundhouses. Visiting this village was a highlight of our two weeks Fujian trip.
Great cultural heritage.
Great to be there.
(Translated by Google) It cost 20 yuan to ask the tour guide to explain. It is different from just walking around and looking at the flowers, so you can better understand the historical background of the earth building. It is worth a visit. (Original) 花了20元人民幣請導遊解說,有別於走馬看花更加了解土樓的歷史背景,很值得來一看。
(Translated by Google) The first time I went to Tulou was nearly 30 years ago. At that time, the earth buildings were still ordinary people's homes. The journey from Xiamen by car was bumpy and bumpy for most of the day, driving on winding mountain roads. Since then, I have been there three or two times. Now, with the expressway open, it only takes more than two hours to get there. In the high mountains of Fujian and Guangdong, there are some residential buildings of various sizes, round or square, with unique shapes. These are earth buildings, also known as enclosing buildings, which are a wonderful flower in Chinese architecture. During the Song and Yuan Dynasties, the Han people moved south one after another to avoid war. In order to defend against wild beasts and fight against bandits, they relied on the mountains and local materials to design this architectural model that was suitable for living together as a group and could jointly defend against foreign enemies. By the Ming and Qing Dynasties, During this period, this architectural model gradually matured and formed its current layout. The first floor is where the courtyard, ancestral hall, and kitchen are located. The second floor is used for storing grain and stacking farm tools. The third floor is for home bedrooms. There are no windows on the first and second floors, but there are gun holes and arrow holes. Above the third floor Open windows. The Hongkeng Earth Building Group, located in Hukeng Town, Yongding County, is an outstanding representative of earth building architecture. There are more than 40 earth buildings of different shapes and sizes built in different eras, as well as Lin's ancestral hall, temples, schools, etc. built along the river. , so spectacular. Among them, Zhencheng Building was built in 1912. It took 5 years to complete and cost 80,000 silver dollars. It was jointly built by Lin Hongchao, uncle and several brothers, the grandson of Lin Zaiting, the 19th generation of the Lin family. The Zhencheng Tower is a round tower with two concentric rings and a trigram shape, with carved beams and painted pillars. It is beautifully decorated, simple and elegant, and combines Chinese and Western styles. Therefore, it is called the "Prince of Earth Buildings". Kuiju Tower was built in the 14th year of Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1834) and took nearly five years. The owner of the building, Lin Kuiyang, asked Wu Yifu, a Hanlin scholar from Meng Brothers, to design it. The building was built on the mountain, with a low front and a high back. It has a palace-like structure, with a high central hall and low sides. The building is connected to the ridge behind it. The couplet on the gate is inscribed: " The civilization of Kuixing Langzhao flourished, and the gathering of clans here brought a new atmosphere." The construction of Fuyu Building began in 1880, costing more than 100,000 Guangyang, and took three years to complete. It was designed by Zhang Xingbing, the prefect of Tingzhou, a friend of Lin Zhongshan, Lin Renshan, and Lin Deshan, the sons of Lin Zaiting. Its structure is a mansion-style structure, shaped like three A mountain implies the meaning of the three brothers. The main building on the central axis is low in front and high in back. There are two horizontal buildings with orderly height and clear priorities. The gate and surrounding walls are paved with river pebbles, integrating seamlessly with the surrounding environment. In July 2008, Fujian Yongding and Nanjing Tulou were successfully included in the World Heritage List. Time has passed and I went to Hongkeng again. I found that due to factors such as tourism development and commercial growth, the simplicity and ancient charm of Yongding Earth Buildings in the past have been greatly reduced, and the pastoral scenery and mountain scenery have also been greatly reduced, which is sad.
