We loved our visit to the Berkeley Plantation. Our tour guide was so informative and we learned so much. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and located on the James river. We enjoyed walking the grounds and seeing some of the monuments and having George the cat tag along. Definitely make this one of your stops when traveling through Virginia.
What a great visit! Our tour guide was pleasant, knowledgeable and funny too. We ordered our tickets online the night before but you can buy at the door too. A lot of walking after the house tour so wear good shoes. George the cat was an added extra tour guide. Recommend, we learned some history and enjoyed our visit. We’d go back.
This is a great place to stop and see some British/ American history. The staff are wonderful and did a fantastic job. Beautiful location. What amazing history can be found. If your in the area or on 295. Take a short detour and stop. You won't be disappointed.
This was a fantastic place to visit and the tour was top notch! Really awesome, informative and beautiful. Highly recommend and please make sure to give George the cat a snuggle too.
Wasn't planned but so glad a local man in Williamsburg recommend the Berkeley Mansion. Lots of interesting historic insights into Virginia life around William Harrison and Benjamin Harrison Must see this plantation.
One of the best tours I have ever been on. I wish I caught his name. An older black gentleman. He was incredible. He was so full of knowledge and the way he talked to us was just so wonderful. He shared so much about the history of this home and he said he loves history and you can definitely see it. He works directly for the owner of the plantation. I can't say enough about this house if you are interested in plantation life and our country's history and our founding fathers. I would so do this again
Our tour guide was awesome. She did great job explaining the whole plantation. We had few questions regarding some items and she was able to answer all of them. Glad we got to do this tour! Would definitely do it again !
Would highly recommend visiting! We had an amazing tour guide who was so knowledgeable & friendly! The plantation is so full of history. I’ve lived in Virginia pretty much my whole life and never knew until today that this is really where the first Thanksgiving took place! Beautiful grounds and full of cardinals! I’ve never seen so many. And King George (the cat) is a very well mannered & handsome little fella! :)

An absolute gem of the Rt 5 historic sites, and was not busy at all when I went. Highly recommend for the gorgeous architecture, 400 year old trees, and sweeping river views.
This property is truly a gem in examining Colonial and United States history. Being the oldest continuously-run family business since 1614, the surroundings made one feel as if they were transported back in time. The tour guide provided a detailed history of the various peoples who occupied the property as well as a detailed history of the family that resided here for centuries. Overall, this is an essential stop for those who love to explore the sites of Early American history.
An impressive plantation on the river. Many outbuildings to view. Purchase tickets at the gift shop. $11 to walk the grounds and over $20 to tour the house ground floor. The family still lives in the house so the upstairs is closed off. The gardens were disappointing as they were overgrown. It would be nice if a community group would volunteer to help preserve the gardens as they were probably very nice at some time in the past. There are two magnificent old trees behind the house. The tour guide says they are over 450 years old. There is approximately a 2 mile drive from the main highway.
Went here to celebrate my Uncle's 70th birthday 🎂. This Winery was absolutely worth the trip. Very nice, elegant, and spacious. Had a great time. Got to meet new family members and see family I haven't seen in a while. The food and service was phenomenal. Looking forward to stopping by again. One of the most beautiful Winery's 🍷 I've visited.
We decided to come on a whim the Saturday before Father's day. We were pleasantly surprised that admission to the grounds were free that particular day. The house itself was spectacular and we enjoyed.the grounds and gardens. They had an amazing 350 year old willow oak behind the house near the river. The was a very informative time-line of the history of the site found in the ice house building.
Just amazing and rare piece of history. Be proactive and book your tickets ahead online. I glad i did, we got first 11 am spot and had great exclusive guided tour of the first floor of the house, the family actually lives on the second and third floor, so you can't go there. Melissa, our guide, was highly knowledgeable and knew history of the place and about the artifacts displayed. Allow 2 hours for entire walk through, museum and outside buildings. There is also small gift shop on the properry, and winery/restaurant half a mile away if you get hungry.
Beautiful historic home! The interior has been beautifully maintained over the generations, with tons of antiques original to the house. The portraits of the family members are beautiful. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Very impressed!!!!
Great example of a colonial plantation! This was our first stop of the day, and I appreciated the great signage they had up explaining all of the outbuildings, and I believe they have some sort of audio tour around the property, but we skipped that in favor of going on the house tour. You can only visit the downstairs, but seeing that the family still lives in the house, I really appreciate the fact that they are willing to share any part of their home with the public at all. The tour was very informative and I loved our guide! I will have to come back and visit the vineyard next time I’m in the area.

Westover was a conjoined sister to Berkeley. An impromptu talking tour ensued with a renter of its west wing. He is a Richmond architect but has lived here for the last 8 years. He discussed aspects of the house, grounds and James River while noting both Coogan's Point and the s.o.b. Jeb Stuart who purportedly tried to bomb the Union troops encamped at Westover during the "War of Northern Aggression," which would be the southern old timers depiction of the Warhhh. BTW: He is not originally from VA and has not been suckled by Virginia history. Westover commands a beautiful view of the James and a 4+ hour sitting tour of this site is beyond worth of the 5.00 donation. (The 5000 acre eagle reserve is directly across the James.
We had a wonderful visit during Historic Garden Week. The current owners were active guides and amazingly welcome. This property offers so much history and was a joy to tour. If you are lucky to have time when yours are available this is a stop you should not miss.
This house museum exceeded my expectations all around! Beautifully situated directly on the James River, the house is very well maintained while at the same time being lived in by the current owners. Andrea, the current owner, gave the tour. Her love of her home was evident in everything she said about it. She’s done a ton of historical research to find out about it although her family has owned the home for more than 100 years! Many beautiful old trees on the property as well as gardens (a bit wild now) and cemetery. Highly recommend!
Westover is a lovely Plantation that is owner occupied.. This plantation home is not open to the public for daily tours however I left a message to find out when a tour would be held. I was surprised that the owner called me back with an appointment time to see her lovely home...
Gorgeous house and grounds. Stunning setting in the James River. Informative and charming owner as the guide. A not to be missed visit when in the Williamsburg area.
Historic Westover was the home of William Byrd who established the city of Richmond. The home is quite big and can only be toured by appointment. You can tour the grounds for a $5 fee paid at the gate. The parking area is very small. There is a sweeping view of the James River. You can view his grave site in the gardens. This property is adjacent to the Berkeley Plantation.
Tranquil setting and teeming with colonial Virginia history. The dog is very friendly and made for a great host! Thank you to the current owners for allowing the public to visit. Let's keep this opportunity available and respect the property.
Lived here almost my whole life. It is a very beautiful place. Indoor tours are by appointment only, but you can always stroll the grounds and formal gardens. We do not get many visitors, so it is usually a very peaceful and tranquil place.

We visited the home for our 10th wedding anniversary and we cannot recommend the private tour enough!! Tim gave us a tour of the house and grounds that we really enjoyed; we listened to his stories for over 2 hours!! When we told him we collect magnets from every President’s home, he searched hard to find something to commemorate our journey. Didn’t find a magnet but he came up with a decorative spoon, for free as an anniversary gift! We can’t recommend this enough
Plenty of parking and it’s a self guided tour with a fantastic map. We arrived by 11 on Thursday and dropped cash in the box, wasn’t busy and it was easy to just pay there. We took our time and followed the 16 markers and ended at the restroom and then to parking past the pet cemetery (loops). Very happy we stopped here and enjoyed the self paced walk on beautiful grounds.
I was able to tour the grounds. I appreciate the well marked spots and the brochure that explained each one. I hope to tour inside at some point.
When able I travel for history and food. I have been to the homes, castles and palaces of kings, queens and American presidents. With its beautiful trees and unique architecture, Sherwood Forest Plantation offers an opportunity to experience American history when private citizens were deeply engrossed in the world of economic servitude, while on the verge of tearing themselves apart. Don't let the English name escape you.
We enjoy travelling to President's homes and this one we did while staying in Williamsburg. President Tyler's home was well maintained and easy to get to. There was a walking tour guide at the entrance and you pay $10 an adult for the self guided tour. The brochure was informative and thorough. You could walk all around the grounds. With two young kids it took us about 30 minutes to do. The inside tour was the priciest Presidents home tour we've seen, so we skipped it. The only thing this place was lacking was a gift shop, which is a shame since we collect ornaments and magnets from the homes we've visited. Probably because it's privately owned, but still a bummer.
The grounds are well kept on this plantation. There are maps with a short explaination of each marker. There is even a map of major trees on the property. The best part however is being able to tour the lower level of the house. The house is occupied by part of the original family. Tours arrangements are made in advance and have a per person cost. The guide, a friend of the family, is a wealth of information. This was the most fascinating plantation tour we have ever taken. We'll worth the time and admission cost.
It is a nice quiet place to visit. The grounds tour is self guided and includes a map with the fee. The house tour is great but you need to schedule well in advance of your visit.
Tim was an amazing host. We tour presidents houses as a hobby and this was the most intimate. Yes, it is pricier than some, but trust me, you get your money's worth. The grounds are visually stunning so if you skip the house, you still have a good time. This place is family owned and they are the epitome of southern hospitality, you leave feeling like you know all the family. Any historian needs to make a stop here, you won't regret it!

What a wonderful Bed and Breakfast!! This beautiful old building is a unique and wonderful experience. Dot and Jules, the proprietors, were lovely; they welcomed up and provided a wonderful tour of the entire estate. The interior decor is very unique..you really need to stay there to appreciate it. Knowing the historical characters who walked it's floors also adds to the special feeling of being a part of history. The breakfast was wonderful, served in their exquisitely decorated parlor room... The bed and pillows were also very comfortable. Stay here...you will not regret such a memorable night!
We stayed 2 nights at Edgewood in September '22 after North Bend plantation had to cancel our reservations last minute due to a family emergency. Edgewood was a plantation that is clearly past it's prime, as are the owners. The host, Mr Julian, forgot we were coming so was not there to welcome us and we had to come back a couple hours later, the rooms are suffocatingly stuffed with antiques, and though things are mostly clean, there is just a very old and unused air to it. Miss Dot has severe memory issues, and though we enjoyed our time visiting with Mr Julian and hearing about the remodeling of the house in the 70-80's, the stay was far from worth the $400+ cost. We were completely unaware of the paranormal aspect of the house, and unwittingly chose to stay in the Jeb Stuart room and my husband and I both experienced things we would rather not have experienced. If you're into paranormal stuff, go for it, but not our thing. Over all, the rooms were ok, but not the type that feel "homey." Every room has it's own bathroom (however small), which is lovely, but they are tiny and stuffed and there is no where to put ones luggage/toiletries/clothing.
This is place is a must visit type of location. Amazing! Had the best experience. Dot and Candy were extremely welcoming and told us all about the house and its history. They have a beautiful garden and pool. Very accommodating for my large family. 6 of us in total stayed and had a great time. My children didn't want to leave. My son who is 7 tried to leave a tip out of money he has been saving for months. He had the best experience. The breakfast was perfect and very fitting of the atmosphere. What can I say but WOW! We will try to go again since it was such a memory.
Our daughter was married at Berkeley Plantation in June 2018 and the family of the groom and bride stayed at Edgewood Plantation for the weekend. It was wonderful to be at a B&B that was so close to the wedding location. The rooms were beautifully decorated with incredible antiques and the beds were so elegant and comfortable. The breakfast was amazing and the hospitality was beyond anything that we have experienced. Dot and Julian took care of all of our needs before we even knew what we needed. They are genuine people that truly love their home and make everyone feel at home there. Pictures were taken of the bride and her attendants in the back yard/ gardens that were spectacular. I would highly recommend Edgewood for anyone that wants to experience true Southern Hospitality at its best. If you want to feel pampered, this is the place to visit! Thank you Dot and Julian for your wonderful hospitality and making Hannah's wedding weekend extraordinary! Wendy and Butch Haupt
Where do I start?! This bed & breakfast is so gorgeous! So many beautiful antique decorations! Dot is such a sweet lady and an amazing hostess!! Her personal touch makes you feel like you are at home and welcome anytime. This is our second stay here and will definitely not be our last!! We are staying in Prissys Quarters and it is phenomenal!!! Looking forward to many more stays! If you haven't been here yet, you should!!
Right off the bat I have to say, out of any place of lodging I have been (And I travel a ton for work), this has hands down the absolute best hospitality I have ever had. Dot is simply a beautiful soul who I was blessed with meeting. She went way above and beyond making sure you felt more than 100% comfortable. Her breakfast was very good, coffee and even a courtesy beer upon arrival. She had so much information of the surrounding area, her husband gave us a bunch of history of the area and a tour of the yards. Our first night there the group we were with, we were the only ones so she said we were allowed to go into any room and look around and observe. She gave us a tour of the house and history of each room. Everytime we encountered her through out out stay she always had something sweet and pleasant to say to keep your feeling of comfort at peak. I highly encourage, stay here if you are ever in Charles City, if not for the history but to have confidence in knowing angels such as Dot still exist and restore your faith in people.
I have had the pleasure of staying at the beautiful Edgewood Plantation twice and am ready to book another stay this month. The accommodations are so comfortable and beautiful and the food is absolutely five star quality. Dot is such a gracious host and entertains her guests with wonderful stories of the history the house and the surrounding area. She and her husband have spent years collecting period furniture which heightens the atmosphere. The pool is beautiful and so inviting. This place is so rich in history and southern hospitality. I'll be back soon!
I drove to Charles City from New York, expecting to stay at my family home. When I arrived, the power, heat and water were off, and I was exhausted and needed a place to stay. I called Edgewood and they were able to accommodate me on short notice. I cannot begin to describe the kind hospitality Dot and Julian bestowed on me. My room was warm and nicely appointed. In the morning, I walked the grounds to the creek and was able to see the impressive historic mill on the property. The home is lovely and I was very comfortable, but more importantly, they really helped me and extended the utmost hospitality in every way. I will never forget their kindness.

Piney Grove is wonderful stop on any road trip through Charles City County, VA. The site’s bespoke architecture speaks volumes to the curator’s passion for preservation and love for VA architecture. Using the UniGuide App - a self-guided audio tour - I was able to learn about the property and its various dwellings along each of the fifteen station stops. For those less tech-savvy, there is also a brochure available which includes a detailed map of the 7-acre property (historically encompassing over 300). I would recommend this stop to anyone with an interest in architecture, history, traditional building methods, and a general sense of curiosity for the place they are in, or maybe just passing through. 10/10. Can’t wait to return!
I wasn't able to download the app for the spots around the property. But it was a cute little place to explore. There was a shed with a lot of historical stories posted, so that was helpful.
For 3 dollars a person for a self guided tour. There wasn't a decent map to be able to use to figure out where to go.

First came the settlement at Jamestown then those who founded our country began to move inland, following the James River and never forgetting the hand of God in their enterprise as they went. This church was established in 1613. Political upheaval and war, revolutionary and civil, brought about temporary destruction but it still stands today, testimony to the Providence of God...
Beautiful church with amazing American history.
Very peaceful setting. So much history.
This is a beautiful, historic Episcopal church with a lovely, welcoming congregation. Thanks for hosting the Blessing of the Bicycles and the Capital Trail today!
Beautiful place to visit for a little while. We didn't get to go inside and were the only visitors.
Lovely small Historic ,Country, Episcopal Parish. Where everybody knows your name. With welcoming congragation. I Enjoyed worshipping with other fellow episcopalians.

Terrific fishing pier, wonderful place to launch kayaks. Has boat ramp and hiking trails. Campsites located in the park for bicyclist using the capital trail. Restrooms within the park are very clean . Great place to just get outdoors.
We love coming here when in Charles City visiting our friends. Today there was a lot of people fishing off the pier. They blocked it off from others being able to go all the way down to the end but we’ve been here before so all good. There are public bathrooms if necessary and picnic tables. Great spot and I look forward to another visit when it’s in full bloom.
Great little park. One mile off the VCT about 22.5 mile marker. I was a little worried about the bathrooms, but they were fine. The campsites however were very rooty, hard to find a good place for the tent. I will be back though and with a fishing pole.
The fishing pier and boat ramp ($5 that needs to be paid to a machine that looks over 30 years old) are nice and look to be in fairly decent shape. There is a nice little stream that empties into the James River. That’s about all this park has. The board walks, steps, and “lookout towers” are rotting away and appear/feel unsafe. I was expecting some hiking trails, but all they have is a 2 minute walk. There is trash EVERYWHERE! I’m surprised some high school kids or boy scouts can’t do it for community service, but based on what I saw it would probably need a full time staff… The parking area, which is horribly designed, has fading signs EVERYWHERE. Every few feet there is a sign that say don’t do this, or don’t do that. The actual park rules are posted way off in the corner, at the start of the fishing pier. Most visiting for the 2 minute walk wouldn’t even see it. Why would you have a park that doesn’t allow dogs? Ridiculous! The primitive campground was a nice idea, but with the pure mud sites and walkways, plus the endless roots on the sleeping pads, I wouldn’t stay there. One of the sites has a dead tree beside it that looks like it’s going to come down at any time. This park could be really amazing, but Charles City has squandered its opportunity thus far. There is tons of erosion that the county refuses to do anything about. The path from the campsites to the closest “lookout” has the dirt running all over the path due to the counties apparent refusal to plant vegetation, which would tremendously help. Such an easy fix, and the counties refusal shows how little they care. I hope one day a boy scout group adopts the park and turns it into what it has the potential of being. Obviously the county doesn’t have the ability or interest.
Great spot to visit, fish, or drop the boat off. I ride here on my bike once and awhile as well. Never too crowded during the week.
Nice area to fish from a pier or river bank.Has a boat launch with a modest $5.00 fee.
It's a good ramp very nice parking lot but a bit small. It does have restrooms, clean and secure. There is a drop box for the 5 dollar fee if you are not a county resident to use the ramp. Well worth the 5 bucks. Bring a pin to write with. There is also a public fishing pier.
I had blast at our Picnicking with the Pastor's event. Nice cool breeze on the water and plenty of space for the children to run and play. Explore the hidden trails and take as many breath taking photos as you hear desires. I enjoyed the view and quietness. What a nice place to go and clear your mind.
