Take a short diversion off the highway up the smoothest dirt road you'll ever encounter and you'll find this silver mining ghost town. Interesting to hear about the hydroelectric/hydropneumatic? power station. There's a little stall selling coffee, pastries and ice cream too.
Sandon Museum was one of the highlights of my mid-September motorcycle trip from Vancouver through the Kootenays, onward to Lake Louise and Banff. A must-visit for CCF Brill Trolley fans, old workhorse buses that roamed Vancouver streets until fully retired in March 1984, replaced by Flyer E901A/E902’s. It's so sad most of the 240 Brill Trolleys were sold for scrap value at $811 per bus. The gravel road to Sandon is about 5 kilometers off Highway 31A, but smooth enough for a heavy sport touring bike. A beautiful destination, so rich in B.C. history, a wonderful place to spend the afternoon.
Great little tourist attraction old mining town. Very cool little museum and staff were very nice to give an interesting short speech about the history of Sandon. Quite interesting to see how the town has changed over the years. The power generator station was interesting and same with the old steam locomotive and old transit buses. 6km of flat graded dirt road to get up to Sandon, not a paved road FYI.
What a unique experience. We weren't sure what to expect and thought there was going to be just retired buses there, but there was a huge museum, store, and powerhouse. You can also camp there, but recommended to call ahead to reserve a spot. There are a few outhouses located in town and by the camping area. There was also a little food truck there. All the people working there were very friendly. I brought my 2 teenage boys and we all had a great time learning about the town and seeing the pictures and items there. Thanks for the great memories!
Interesting site to see, and enjoyed seeing some of the local stories when Sandon was booming. Museum staff member was great in providing some additional context. Was left a bit off-put coming here after visiting the power house and store, it is clear there are some awkward tensions running through Sandon, with signs posted arguing with one-another regarding the historical society and responsibilities held by different parties here. Still worth a visit, but thought is was worth to note this.
Visited Sandon 4 times now, every time there's another piece of history to see. From the locomotive and transit buses to the unique and historic generating station there's so much to learn about BC's mining history. Well worth the short side trip from the highway.
I'm so glad we have it here finally- it's been on my bucket list! We planned our entire trip to B.C from Manitoba around visiting Sandon! Excellent museum and tour guides available to show you around and answer questions.
Neat spot to stop and explore. We didn't actually go into the museum, but explored the ghost town. If you have the time take a walk along some of the old roads which are no longer used and you will encounter a few buildings. The power plant was neat to do a quick walk through. The tour they tell you they offer is just opening the doors for you to walk through and take a look yourself. Kids thought it was neat to see the old buses and the old train.
