Peninsula
Nature & Parks
Scenic destination featuring a historical palace with gardens, a small zoo, beaches & a lighthouse.
Slide 1 of 8
The palacio is open only over the weekends but the surrounding gardens is beautiful and it is open every day till 10. It has sea animals to see and a park. In general amazing views and it’s totally recommend it!
Fabulously picturesque and immensely photogenic, the Magdalena Peninsula was the highlight of my stay in Santander. I wish I had a whole day to spend there and take in all the views. The sunsets there are simply magnificent.
What a beautiful place to visit even as a tourist. We were travelling with an aged mom and were delighted to hear that she didn't have to walk up the hill to the palace as there's a train (bus) one can hop on that takes a slow trip up the hill. Cost was 5€. The grounds are immaculate and there's benches placed throughout the peninsula where you can sit and enjoy the view. It's a lovely area to stroll around.
Inside the palace is exquisite and at 3 euros for a guided tour well worth it but the grounds and seascapes are stunning. You can see and hear the power of the waves crashing into the cliffs. A short bus journey (1.30 euros each way) will take you there and entry to the grounds is free.
Very nice, green and peaceful place! Perfect for a walk! Beautiful places to visit and eat! Surrounded by water with amazing views, and that sound of waves crashing on the rocks, ahh... miss this place!
The grounds surrounding the Palace are absolutely stunning, with beautiful cliff edges where you can feel the full force of the atlantic wind. The park is really well maintained and is a lovely place to just sit and chill. The actual peninsula is 5 stars for definite, but the park area lacks toilets and amenities. The mini zoo (with sea lions and penguins) seems cruel and unnecessary. The animals don't have much space and some don't seem very healthy, which put a gloomy cloud over what an otherwise lovely trip to the park.
It's very beautiful place. You can go to castle Magdalena or visit mini zoo. Over there is amazing view. You should to visit this place if you in Santander
The Magdalena Peninsula is a 28 hectare peninsula located near the entrance to the Bay of Santander. The peninsula is a popular recreational destination for both tourists and locals. The historic Palacio de la Magdalena is located on the peninsula, which along with its surrounding gardens, is designated as a cultural heritage site. Also located on the peninsula is a small zoo, three galleons of the Cantabrian mariner Vital Alsar Ramírez and a lighthouse.

Slide 1 of 8
I would definitely recommend visiting Palacio de la Magdalena. There are 2 options to get here. You can get the train which is part of the Hop on Hop off bus tour. It is included when you buy the ticket for €26pp. or if you were feeling active you could walk it in about 30-40 mins. Beautiful views of the coast once you get the top and of course the huge Palace which was constructed between 1909-1911.
A true gem in Santander! The palace is an architectural marvel with a fascinating history—it served as the summer residence of King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenie. The grounds are stunning, perfect for a peaceful walk, picnic, or just enjoying the views. There’s also a small zoo and playground, great for kids. We walked there (about 35 minutes from the city center), but there’s also a tourist train available. Access to the gardens is free, and guided tours of the palace interior are available and absolutely worth it. Facilities are clean, and there’s a nice café on-site. A must-visit for anyone coming to Santander—beautiful, historic, and family-friendly!”
If you are in Santander, you must visit this place. Besides the beautiful park and the emblematic buildings, the view is absolutely breathtaking. As a recommendation, if you enjoy walking, don’t take the little train to reach the palace. The distances presented by the staff who guide you are exaggerated — the walking times are much shorter.
I enjoyed going to see it but I didn't want to visit inside the palace. I found the outside space very pleasant to walk around and the exterior of the palace is really very beautiful and for those who saw the series Grand Hotel it is really cool to go there.
Situated on the western peninsula of the bay, this former palace is the centre piece of a beautiful park with an excellent circular walk, lovely beach, great viewing points towards the bay and out to sea.
Super pretty park with picknick area, toilet and view point, you can also find seals 🦭on the left side of the park, they got fresh sea water and seems happy but one of areas looked too small for 3 of them.
Really nice walk. It's on a small peninsula from which you have some fantastic views. Beautiful trees and a nice park as well to relax or have a stroll, away from the crowded innercity. There is also a small zoo in the area where we saw some seals.
Grand palace on the peninsula once a fomer royal palace gifted to the king by the people of Santander. A few art insulations surround it.

Beautiful beach that looks like a postcard. I went in October when it wasn't crowded at all. Because it's so amazing, expect crowds during the peak season.
When you think on beaches in Spain you probably realize the south or eastern Spain, but this is actually one of the best beaches of northern Spain, and of course, on my opinion, the best of the town indeed the city, unfortunately I was there in the winter time so I couldn’t swim, but believe there were people swimming This area is full of life whole year long they have a great waterfront walk and nice place to take pictures, clean and beautiful landscapes My wife and I made Santa tree one of our stops during our northern Spain road trip and we couldn’t be more satisfied
Low tide in the morning, high tide in the afternoon. All the beaches are connected so you can make a good stroll back and forth.
A glorious beach with a lot of amenities and supermarkets close by. It has a diverse crowd without too much music or overly quiet. The surrounding area is gorgeous and there are sunbeds if you feel you need one. The sand is gorgeous, the sea is choppy but gradual so it doesn’t feel overwhelming. A very nice hub for people to meet and get some beach time in. I wouldn’t miss this if you are in Santander, probably my favourite area!
Wonderful atmosphere and view! Beautiful beach with easy access to restaurants and drinks! Walkable... good vibes.
We enjoyed this beach area on the Cantabrian Sea in Santander. There is a lovely promenade and walkway along the beach. It has sand (not pebbles) and is flat which is great for walking. It can be quite busy, but as the beach is 80m wide there is plenty of room.
Very nice beach. Very clean and well maintained
It's such a lovely, safe, clean, fun beach with all ages and sizes coming together to enjoy the blue, blue water; the fresh cool waves, and the glorious skies. Fresh water showers, and lots of delicious ice cream and frozen yoghurt places.

Catholic cathedral

Large cathedral consisting of 2 churches with Gothic design elements & ancient statuary.
Slide 1 of 8
Santander Cathedral is a simply designed but striking building with a fantastic interior. It dates back to around 711 AD and the Moorish influence is very apparent. We spent a pleasant half an hour wandering around.
Lovely cathedral, unfortunately it was closed and we didn’t have time to go inside but I’m sure it was as beautiful as it is on the outside!
We didn’t go in, because it was about to close (it was thursday, around 1pm), but the entry was only 2€ and it looked like there was a pretty inside. I recommended going around the cathedral, there’s many nice photo spots. 📸🌱
Very cool. And the Roman ruins were interesting. The cathedral was closed for a funeral, but we got breakfast near by and went back later.
The cathedral de Santander is located in the city center and it is a big church that has a small entrance fee but I would say is worth it as it is beautiful, not the church that much but the outside area, like a small garden in the middle. The visit doesn’t take long and I recommend it!
Surprisingly pleasant place to visit, and at €2 this is well worth a visit to get out of the heat (or in our case, the rain). The light and bright interior was a surprise given the fairly plain outside. Having been rebuilt in the 50s (an era not known for great architecture) this is appealingly understated. The cloisters are a nice place to sit and recover.
Nice place. 2€ entrance is ok. On the other side is also a small chapel with no cost. Fantastic colourful windows in the back.
It took 3 attempts to enter. 1st a Mass was due to take place. 2nd Siesta time closes everything. We finally gained access the following day. The crypt was lovely too.

Maritime museum
Museums
Exhibits about local maritime heritage, whale skeletons, an aquarium & a restaurant with bay views.
Slide 1 of 8
An October visit to this brilliant museum experience. The history of Spain's maritime ventures are there for the visitors to see. Beautiful scale models of sailing ships of the past to recent times. Marine life and many other aspects of the Spanish seafaring history then and now are displayed in such a way to make it a wonderful experience for the visitors . I will return.
We really enjoyed this museum and aquarium. There are 3 main sections and each was excellent. The history part had intricate models to illustrate all elements of the development of the fishing and boat building industries. The aquarium was amazing with a wide arrange of fish and aquatic life, really beautiful and incredible to see. The third section was natural history with the feature point of the immense whale skeletons. Would thoroughly recommend. The staff were friendly and welcoming.
Worth a visit! I enjoyed this museum a lot due to the many beautiful exhibits & topics that were divided into floors, but connected by the maritime theme. I would have needed more than 1 + 1/2 hours but that's because I took a lot of photos & videos & it was closing time. You start at the top with a viewing platform that shows you the ocean underneath the museum, the beach & the opposite coast (& more). There is also the coffee shop of the museum. Downstairs you find the main exhibition that was larger than expected & on the bottom floor you find the aquarium. There is also a small museum shop & lockers for luggage. If you're interested in ships, aquariums, fishing, the ocean, maritime history etc, then go for it. I'd recommend it 👍
It's a very good value for money. Aquarium on the bottom floor and amazing view from the top balcony. The floors are separated in to different time scales and ages of see exploration and see harbouring. The kids run thru it but did not been bored. Lacks a lot of English translation but Google lense helped at that part. Staff was very kind and considerate and the ticket prices are very reasonable. Awesome to hide from scorching heat.
A lovely museum! the top floor has a panoramic view and a cafe, beneath is a floor full of history. The general information was in Spanish, French and English. Then there's a floor of aquatic animals with the aquarium. The aquarium is quite big for being in a museum, I loved it. Overall recommend to visit to learn some history and watch some fish (they have jellyfish, starfish and small sharks!!)
Amazing museum. I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, but the marine floor is absolutely breathtaking. There is even an aquarium!
Great little museum and aquarium. The kids really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, the less than friendly attendants followed them around shushing them. No cafe, but you weren’t allowed to eat your own food on the plentiful tables on their lovely terrace. Overall, kids loved it. Staff were terrible.
Really interesting museum on marine life and fishing, there is also an aquarium which was my favorite part ! 🐟🐡🩵

Lighthouse built in 1839 within a park, popular for sunset views & walks along the cliffs & beaches.

Breathtaking views of Atlantic and the mountains!!! The exhibition inside of the lighthouse was also nice.
Beautiful views!,nice park area down the steps, lots of people walking their dogs, come here everytime I'm in Santander.
Really cool spot if you like cliffs, oceanic views and seashore related spaces. The views from the mountains are breathtaking, you can see so many bays for miles and miles in a sunny day. A truly amazing place to stop by for a little while, and grab a drink in the close by bar if you feel like it.
Nice museum, good if you need to kill some time in an air-conditioned space. Interesting exhibits with a nice Aquarium in the basement. Restaurant was getting refurbed while we were there so can't comment on food but view is very nice.
Great park and lighthouse. Must see place in Santander. Easy parking and paths to walk along the coast.
Amazing sunset spot ! Best during Summer because its always windy and most importantly the trajectory of the sun. Its breathtaking when the horizon is cloud free, which is kind a rare for Santander.
Very beautiful hike to get to the top of the hill and watch the ocean and listen to the waves. Bring some snack along the way as hiking could take some good 2 hours from downtown Santander.
The lighthouse is on the high ground. If you get to there, you can see the whole scene of grass and Atlantic like watercolor painting. Recommended way to come here is to walk along the beach then cliff. It is quite far but worth every step to take.

Love this remodelled marketplace which houses a range of tapas (pinchos in Cantabria) wine and cheese bars and art units along with a florists and specialist wine and coffee outlets. All beautifully presented. It is situated near the seafront next to the Prehistoric local history museum and certainly invites a visit
What a beautiful place ! Empañadas are great. I'm sorry I couldn't try other shops but if I'm coming back to Santander, I'll try the grill for sure.
Great spot to sample pintxos, vermut, wine and more from several different food stalls. Nice vibe
Really interesting transformation of the old market into an area with many tapas bars with a wide enough choice to keep everybody happy. It is a big plus that you can seat anywhere but choose what to eat from anywhere in the market. We experimented with most of the bars and we were not disappointed by any of our choices.
This place really is awesome. Brilliant food on offer. Great atmosphere. Such a bargain. Two glasses of vino tinto, and really nice vino at that, for four euros. The restaurant in the middle is cracking as well. The beef cheeks were amazing and great value as well.
We visited the morning of All Saints Day - November 1 - which is a holiday in Spain. That ending said this is a great space that has been very thoughtfully turned into a Market with lots of different vendors inside. We had a coffee and a bite to eat before most of the other vendors were open. 20c to use the toilet if you to and they have very nicely provided a change machine for you.
Pick a table, walk around the market and enjoy some tasty tapas and drinks. We enjoyed in particular the "secreto iberico" from La Casa del Indiano, and a selection of different cheeses from Quesoba Cheese-Bar There are public toilets for a 20cts fee.
Excellent food hall. Many restaurants for pinchos or tapas or whatever your heart desires. A cañita, a glass of wine. You name it. Great place to unwind.

Harbor-front bronze statues of 4 orphaned 'raqueros' children seated, standing & diving for coins.
Slide 1 of 8
This sculpture group has a very special meaning as explains in the win formation board. It is pretty easy to walk by without noting it so actually worth using google maps for an exact location
Los taqueria is a sculpture of 4 boys in the port, no tickets required - just keep an eye to not miss them. They are cute.
The sculpture is in the street no tickets are requieres. The place is nice, view and the sculptures are beautiful. When arriving be patient to find a parking spot because there are a few in front of the sculpture. This is must to visit on Santander. Read the story behind the sculptures to have a bigger context of the importance of this piece.
I love this monument. So cool to look at, and an awesome story behind it too. Just a shame that all the fishermen have their rods set up through it! Ruins the photos and the experience a little really. It would be nice if it was respected a little more.
The History of the Raqueros of Santander Raqueros were known   as poor or marginal children, generally orphans, who frequented the docks of the bay of Santander and who survived on petty theft and getting coins from passengers and crew members of boats who threw coins into the sea while waiting. for the little ones to recover them. The raqueros would jump into the sea, dive until they found the coins and come out again with their small treasures. A beautiful story of the place.
Nice 3 sculptures of the orphan kids. Close to the museum.
A great place to sit in the sun and enjoy the view of ocean, mountain, take pictures and have a coffee at the adjacent bar !
Nice place describing the typical Santanderian nature with 4 statues..

A fantastic interactive exhibition describing the way humans have developed over the last 300,000 years. Loads of displays, fascinating artefacts and information. You can do it in an hour but we took 2 and thoroughly enjoyed it. The value at €6 is exceptional in our view. Not really somewhere for small children but interested teenagers should enjoy it. All displays in Spanish, English and French 👌👍
It's set up nicely, it warps you trough different periods in time, located in the centre it is easy to take a look inside. The visit will take you approx 45min. However, there are a few issues. First of all, the fee is 5 euro , and reduced price for certain categories. The price is really too high for what it is. Secondly, I spotted 3 mistakes in the translation to English, whilst this museum is already is around for multiple years they seem to neglected this aspect (something which for this price and prestige I don't think it's acceptable to make this many mistakes, and I didn't even look for mistakes). It is nice however that they tried to incorporate virtual reality, however also for this, if you do this. Do it good. Good part is that you can cross from 1 age to another, but it should be more clear thar you should follow the chronological pathway on the floor.
Fantastic experience, fascinating from the start through to the end. Very immersive and translation into English made it accessible to me. Highly recommend.
Contents and information on local Cantabrian archaeology and palaeontology are very professionally presented. Many novel presentation methods are used. The triple video projection and sensory stimuli reinforcing cooling and warming earth information are excellent. Some inscriptions are too dark to read easily. Touchable replicas of some items are included however more child-friendly content would be great
If you are in Santander be sure to visit this museum. It is beautifully curated and is one of the top two museums in Europe. It has something for everyone and the screens have a button you can press for English & French. There are videos as well as artefacts, quizzes and lots of things for children to do.
Easily the best museum I've ever been to. Not only is it hugely interactive and engaging in how it uses modern technology to tell beautiful stories of the rich history but the lay out is friendly to all in that there's multiple languages, kid friendly with floor indicators and the general lay out allows for a smooth movement through the museum. A must see! Learnt so much. Also special shout out to Oscar who showed such passion in his job, giving us great information and help at the start and end of the museum. No picture does it justice.
An outstanding museum and well worth a visit. Although it’s not particularly large I easily spent 2 hours there, a fascinating collection presented most effectively. The blend of artefacts many thousands of years old with modern architecture and presentation techniques really highlighted the exhibits, particularly the cave art which was fascinating. If you have the chance don’t miss it.
It's a excellent venue for your lunch as it's a good hall. The hall has many stalls that create food which looks amazing with full salads and wine , cheese stalls, cake stalls. Well worth visiting and eating for a wonderful experience

I love this place! It has been always so charming to me. When I come alone, the "less is more " architecture and its surrounding just simply give me quiet and calm feelings. When Mei comes with me, she enjoys the playground, and, the merry-go-round 😄 besides, the elevator is great fun for children! Yes, of course, don't miss the elevator!!! Another thing is, the center is free for children , so bring them to watch a exposition is a very nice thing to do as well. And I appreciate that, during whole year, they organize many different culture activities , when we don't know what to do with our kid in weekend or holiday, go there, always a good choice
Excellent art gallery with so much to offer. The building itself is so nice! There are 2 floors full of so many artists with so many different perspectives. There are also objects in some of the exhibitions. I definitely recommend a visit.
This is just a review of the cafe on the ground level. The coffee and croissants were excellent. We arrived just before opening at 10am and had a seat outside in the shade with a wonderful view of the harbor. The service is as bit slow, but if you are not in a hurry then it is not a problem.
Nice to hang out at the café or check out rooftop of the museum. Large space inside with gorgeous views of the water but sadly not much to see inside. I think they need to have more works to display. Entry for 18 and under is free.
Bought the ticket when I arrived. There was no queue. The galleries in the art center were very interesting. If you have spare time, you should give it a try
Iconic building but art collection is relatively poor. Bit sad that building design didn’t contemplate Santander’s weather and all the exterior walls need to be covered by a net to avoid falling pieces hit people.
It's very important spot to hide in case of rain, an beside you find a grate spot for children with bar for adults.
Expensive for the fact that inside turned out to be not my cup of tea. There was not much selection to see either over 2 floors. Kids go free so this is a plus. We enjoyed the ride in the biggest lift ever that could fit a car and in the small singing lift outside.

An amazing historical building. The casino is not very large but adequate and not very busy. Around the building some great restaurants and very upmarket apartments and restaurants.
Stopped by to pick up my souvenir casino. No ATMs inside to get money; had to use a cash advance on a credit card. Small casino. Did win some money.
Poker is the popular game here. Roulette not so much! Entrance is free. A nice place, in a beautiful area to spend a couple of hours.
Said it was handicap accessible, but that is a joke. Elevator up doesn’t work so 20 steps up to get in! Bathrooms are 2 steps up and 2 steps down too
Beautiful impressive building.... you can dress up to visit inside the casino. ... at very least dress smart casual. No shorts, football shirts, or flip flops allowed in here. ...
Great little place for a beer and a few tapas right next to the beach. Affordable and convenient. Will definitely go again.
