Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Ruined, 16th-century, red sandstone castle on a hillside, with guided tours & a huge wine barrel.
Slide 1 of 8
We took the fernicular up and the ticket included entrance to the castle courtyard, big wine barrel and apothecary museum. If those things don't interest you and you don't mind walking a steep incline to get there, you can explore the castle grounds for free - most of the interior is not accessible to visitors, anyway. There's plenty to see outside, including beautiful views of the river and the old town.
Dating back to the 13th century, this castle is impressive and has a unique architectural character compared with other castles. Several sections have been carefully restored, while others are intentionally kept as ruins, which adds to its atmosphere. You can visit a fascinating pharmacy laboratory museum inside, though access to the other interior areas is unfortunately restricted. The grounds include an enormous garden and provide breathtaking views of the city. Entrance fee is 11,00 € for adults. Walking through the castle and soaking up its centuries-old history was an unforgettable experience.
Very beautiful view over the whole city including the hills, the river, and a breathtaking sunset in the horizon. The garden is sooo big and “instagrammable” with many spots for selfies and photos. The castle is not big but has a beautiful winery, restaurant, small museum, beautiful facade, but most importantly an amazing high terrace overlooking the city. The tickets include a ride on the cable tramway taking you all the way to the tip of the mountain. A beautiful ride and nice view.
Absolutely beautiful place! The views over Heidelberg are stunning, and the castle itself is full of history and charm. Great mix of ruins and restored areas, with lots to explore. A must-see if you’re in the area! The bergbahn is really close by too if you have tickets to go back into altstadt
This castle truly has a mystic vibe to it! The red-brick theme, and the fact that its in ruins but still very well maintained adds to its appeal. Highly recommend visiting in fall/autumn as it looks super aesthetic with the green-yellow-red-brown leaves all around the magnificent castle! We didn't go inside but just taking a stroll around it and outside was super beautiful and makes for a good outing in Heidelberg!
Visiting Heidelberg Castle felt like stepping into a storybook. The walk up is a bit steep, but completely worth it for the stunning views over the city and the Neckar River. The castle itself has a beautiful mix of grandeur and ruin, which gives it so much character and history. I especially enjoyed wandering through the gardens and taking in the scenery. My recommendation is to take your time and just enjoy the atmosphere as well as to go before the sunset. Highly recommended!
Highly Recommend 👌👌👌 Heidelberg Castle is absolutely worth a visit! The views over the city and river are breathtaking, and the mix of old architecture and history makes it special. Don’t miss the giant wine barrel or the Pharmacy Museum. Go at sunset for amazing photos. The only problem is parking especially on the weekends, this place is crowded with visitors.
I didnt go into the palace(entrancee fee was around 20EUR) but it was so beautiful even only outside. I saw the panoramic view to the city. It was perfect.

Iconic pedestrian bridge constructed in 1788 offering scenic views of city landmarks.
Slide 1 of 8
The old bridge of Heidelberg is one of the most rated tourist attraction and is worth the walk. The bridge is located across the river and overlooking the castle. You need to visit both in the day and in the night to experience the view of the castle. The scenery is really beautiful and picturesque. The walk to the old town surrounded by restaurants me the walk even special.
I am walking on the Old Bridge in Heidelberg. The views are amazing and there are many spots to take photos. The bridge has a beautiful historic charm and you can see the river and the old town from here. It is a perfect place to enjoy a peaceful stroll and capture memories.
The Old Bridge in Heidelberg is simply stunning. Standing on it feels like being right in the middle of all the beauty — the river, the castle above, and the charming old town around you. It’s such a picturesque and peaceful spot, perfect for soaking in the atmosphere of Heidelberg
The Old Bridge in Heidelberg is simply stunning, no matter the weather. I visited on a cloudy, rainy day and it still took my breath away — the views of the Neckar River, the castle on the hill, and the Altstadt are just magical. The bridge itself has so much charm and character, with its stone arches and historic vibe. It’s a perfect spot for a quiet walk, photos, or just taking in the atmosphere of the city. A must-see if you’re in Heidelberg — it really captures the spirit of the place.
This bridge looks good and walking on the also give good view for your eyes. Not crowded. River view is really good from the this bridge. It’s paved with stone. Entrance has big towers that add on to good view. But this only on south side of the bridge. Really worth to visit this bridge. In autumn season will get nice view of castle.
Old Bridge in Heidelberg is a popular tourist spot and a great place for photos, especially near the famous monkey statue. From the bridge, you get beautiful views of the Neckar River. You can enjoy boating on the river or take a walk along the nearby garden on its banks for a relaxing experience.
Since I was a little child (and watch “Hallo Onkel Doc”) I wanted to come to Heidelberg and see this bridge and enjoy the view from there towards the castle. And it did not disappoint! Although it is covered with tourists, it spoils one with history, stunning architecture (the bridge itself as well as buildings around ) and amazing views across the Neckar.
The Old Bridge is one of Heidelberg’s most iconic landmarks, connecting the Old Town (Altstadt) to the Neuenheim district across the Neckar River. Built in the late 18th century (1788), it offers a picturesque setting with a rich history and spectacular views of the city, castle, and hills. ✅ Highlights Architectural Beauty: A classic Baroque-style sandstone bridge with nine elegant arches. Heidelberg Castle Views: Offers postcard-perfect angles of the castle perched above the town. Statues & Gate: • Karl Theodor Statue: Honoring the bridge’s builder. ▪︎ Old Bridge Gate: A medieval-looking twin-tower gate, part of the former city walls.B • ridge Monkey (Brückenaffe): A famous bronze sculpture; touch it for luck or photos. 📸 Why People Love It Photography Heaven: Especially at dawn or dusk. Cultural Symbol: Represents Heidelberg's charm and resilience — the original wooden bridges here were destroyed multiple times before this stone one was built. 📝 Visitor Tips Best Times to Visit: Early morning or evening for light and fewer crowds. Nearby Attractions: Just a short walk to the Old Town, Marktplatz, Heiliggeistkirche, and Philosophenweg (Philosopher’s Walk). A really beautiful place. If you aren't in shape the climb is a killer. I workout 3-5 times a week. My calves were on fire. When I got there, there were 80 year old Germans walking around like it was nothing. Hats off!
A lovely walking path up the side of a hill that overlooks Heidelberg's old town. It is steep in parts as it winds up the hill but with places to stop along v the way to admire the view, it's not difficult. The views are worth the walk.
The initial climb can be quite strenuous but eases off when you reach the top. Great views of the castle and old city
This is a great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful view. The atmosphere is peaceful, making it perfect for unwinding. Highly recommend visiting if you're looking for a calm and scenic spot.
A beautiful trail with absolutely stunning panoramic views over Heidelberg and the Neckar River – perfect for photos of the old town and castle. Parking at Parkhaus Nordbrückenkopf (P16) cost me €7.50 for 3 hours, which felt a bit pricey, but honestly it was worth every cent. There’s also a small kiosk along the way, which is convenient for a quick refreshment. Highly recommended if you want to experience Heidelberg from above.
It's a tough walk up and need one to two hours. Views are very nice and we meet many other young and old people on the way. If you like hiking great Walk.
A lovely forest walk. I recommend going all the way up to the monetary ruins, the view is lovely from the tower
Beautiful view, especially at night, but very difficult to access. The road up is very narrow and old, with deep rutts. There are stairs up to the area after the drive. Definitely not disabled accessible.

Fascinating This is a little jewel of a museum in the grounds of the Schloss Heidelberg (included in the Schloss entry fee). The displays were beautiful, and there was a lot of fascinating historical information (in both English and German) about the evolution of apothecaries and development of the pharmaceutical industry.
Within Heidelberg Castle is this museum, which in great detail tells the history of medicines through the ages. Many visits would be required to take it all in. The sheer number of exhibits, set out as Apothecary shops is amazing
This is museum, that you can find in the Heidelberg castle. It has a couple big rooms, where you can find a lot of shelves with apothecary glass. It interesting. But it is a pity that you can’t buy some glass like in museum. Only one bottle there was.
The museum is quite small so there's a traffic light system at the entrance in an attempt to keep it from overcrowding but, in my experience, it didn't work. Perhaps people just ignore it. I found it far too packed inside to see even a fraction of all the interesting exhibits, let alone stop to read the labels. A shame, because it's a really well curated museum and fascinating subject.
It’s not very big, but it’s full of fascinating displays including but not limited to old jars, herbal remedies, antique tools and entire reconstructed apothecary shops. It gave me a real sense of how medicine was prepared centuries ago. I loved how detailed everything was and it made me appreciate how far science has come while still being connected to old traditions. If you are already at the castle, it’s definitely worth stepping inside. Quite informative & unique.
I found this museum very interesting as it traces the history of medicine through the ages. It's a small and well organized museum. There is verbiage that guides you though the history. It's housed inside the Heidelberg castle. The crowd management is good
I think this Apothecary Museum is good place to look around because it displays old days interiors of historic apothecaries. Furthermore admission fee is included in the castle ticket so that it is better and easier, no reason not to see this. With jars, herbs, powders its antique atmosphere was good and it was also a little fun to find things or medicines that I know of. It’s good enough, but may be a better place when visiting with kids.
No additional ticket required - it is included in the 9 Euro entry ticket. It was very interesting to see the history and evolution of medicine in the region. Would have been great if the information was in other foreign languages. You can also buy some unique products there

A must to do in Heidelberg. I'd advise you to go early as it's gets very busy late morning with tourists and there can be a long queue!
Is just a short duration trip by this train. But is one of the oldest and worth riding. You have to buy the full Panorama ticket to ride both trains to reach the top. You cannot ride this train with just a castel ticket and you may have to buy it separately.
Only downside was the wait. Great views from the top.
We walked here from the castle (no problems with a stroller) on a whim and Google Maps indicated the funicular to be in operation. Unfortunately the Bergbahn was closed and we discovered the website stated the funicular is closed until April 7, 2019. There are replacement buses in service, but not quite as novel. The views from here are mostly blocked by trees, so not overly worthwhile unless you feel like a hike. We noticed several waking trails adjacent to Schlosshotel Molkernkur if you’re on foot.
Beautiful as you can see. This station is the last from the new train and the first from the old model. Even the stop looks great, all wooden like the train (which does make some noise while going up or down, but I guess that's part of the adventure 😆). I recommend taking this tour because of the view, which is breathtaking. Plus, it leads to Königstuhl, which is the highest point by train. A 10 minute wooden train away.
Heidelberger Bergbahn. Nice to experience once. The railroad has steepness of up to 41 degrees. Well maintained by HSB.
Great experience, must visit 👍 👌
Come as early as you can! If it gets late you will have to stand a very long line! But it's definitely worth the wait!

Great area to stroll around and do some sightseeing and shopping. When your hungry grab a bite to eat and visit the Heidelberg Castle or the Old Bridge.
Town’s central square has been main market place since the Middle Ages with Gothic church located on western side and Rathaus with ornate architecture on another side. Lots of shops and restaurants around, but Lindt chocolate store was my choice to come by.
Totally worth it to stroll from the tram station until this place, lots of shops, restaurants along the way it’s probably almost 1km street. And it’s just before the entrance of funicular to the castle.
Beautiful old city. A bit touristy, and frankly, not as clean as our other stops in Germany.
A beautiful city with an old town that is truly worth visiting.
A really nice, relax city in Germany. Lots to see. Cosy city. Telax and cosy old town. Plenty of restaurants and cafe's . Nice shops.
Older part of town seems much more interesting with its unique architecture. One day is sufficient to explore around. Plenty of resturants, bars n cafeterias to keep yourself hydrated n fed.
Heidelberg is located just 75 minutes by Flix Train from Frankfurt . When we went there it was very cold in mid January and everything was most beautiful. Loved visiting the castle . It’s very easy to get Uber for to and fro . Market area was like a dream land with most beautiful coffee shops and cinnamon rolls . It was great to have the local delicacy Gluh wine with chestnuts . There was a fleeting moment when I wished to stay there longer instead of just a day because of the beauty all around . If you are visiting Frankfurt then do spare a day and visit heidelberg which is awesome . I also heard that the heidelberg economy thrives on IT companies so they get lots of business visitors .

Evangelical church
Sights & Landmarks
Church offering tours & a tower climb that includes picturesque views of the city.
Slide 1 of 8
If you’re in Heidelberg, the Heiliggeistkirche is an absolute must. From the outside it’s striking—gothic architecture with red sandstone, soaring spires and a baroque roof that really dominates the Altstadt. Inside, it’s calm and atmospheric. There’s a quiet beauty in its simplicity; large high ceilings, stained glass windows, just enough decoration to feel sacred without being overwhelming. Definitely a place to soak in some history, architecture, and quiet — I’d return just to watch light playing through the windows
Really cool architecture and great view from the castle. You can go inside, but we did not have time. No shortage of stuff to see.
It’s very big church, most of the church in Germany will be rich with art work. This not the same . Still its construction is good. Not crowded when I visited on Tuesday. Lot of restaurants are close to it. It’s located very close the riverside
Heiliggeistkirche is one of the most beautiful churches in Heidelberg. People come here for workshops and to experience peace and calm."
Beautiful church in the middle of the square between Heidelberg Castle and The Old Bridge.
Spent 45 minutes in quiet reflection of what the cross of Christ means - watching the slowly turning multi-coloured glass cross. The more understated decorum inside the church, with high ceilings and stained glass windows, creates a more engaging atmosphere.
Not really worth going up the tower, unless you have really run out of things to do. Views are lovely, but not as good as from the Philosophenweg.
Visiting Heiliggeistkirche was nice on the way of the shopping street and marketplace. The light through the stained glass made the whole space calm. I didn’t clim the tower but it’s highly recommended to see the old town and river spread out below. The church isn’t flashy but it carries a quiet beauty that stayed with me long after I left.

Well worth the 6 euros (or 4 on a Monday) to enter. Only a couple of rooms, but interesting insight into the past life of Heidelberg students.
Loved this quirky site. It has been really well preserved and although there aren't many rooms to look in, you can check out other areas of the university and it's history to make it a decent visit. Quite a few Nobel Peace Prizes as well as significant scientific discoveries have come out of the University of Heidelberg.
One of the wackest "attractions" I've ever visited. Its hard to imagine the university once had the authority to lock up its students for minor misdemeanours like public drunkenness and taunting cops. I assumed that majority of the past "inmates" would have been student activists, and some were, but it turns out that most were just regular silly buggers! Love the wall art they left behind for us to explore though. A truly unique experience that I couldn't miss while in Heidelberg, but others may not find it so interesting or worthwhile.
Nice place to feel the mood of the students at late 1890s and early 1900s. There are almost no explanations - the pictures and German poems, comments with jokes, sarcasm, and resentment are the contents that attracts you. If you don't understand German, no problem - take your smartphone and translate the german writings into your native language using google translation. And maybe remembering how you felt when you were in collage may help understanding the context. However, I believe people would appreciate if any explanations or pamphlets exist in other languages.
This student prison is famous for it's graffiti - you visit it together with the university museum. The museum itself describes the history of the university, which is the oldest one Germany. But understanding all the texts might be a challenge if you don't know enough German.
A total joy! These establishments need to be immediately brought to the USA.
Interesting and uncomplicating entry. Visiting time approx 20 minutes. English introductions and Infos partially available. Please dont touch the wall in order to preserve the art!
Little to see if u can’t really read German. I wouldn’t pay to visit but went there because I had the tourist pass. However it’s nice that the city preserves such unique heritage

We had an awesome time here. We had looked this place up on the internet and I am glad I did. It was a charming beautiful in center of Heidelberg. It had animals from all over the world. My 11 year old son was fascinated by the Barbary 🦁 lion, which is extinct in the wild. The zoo also offers a amazing pirate playground which was very cool I strongly recommend this Zoo
A very beautiful zoo with a bunch of unusual animals plus the classics. Lots of shade. Beautiful playgrounds. Entrance price is ok. Food places available but it was rather disappointing (cold hot dog sausages) for the price. Lots of interesting facts about nation and preserving the environment can be found all over the place. Fun activities are all over the place. The petting zoo was my kids’ highlight of the day with the baby goats actually sitting on our laps! Most of the animals have nice living areas - some others are currently under construction. Speaking of construction: the map should be updated! Nice souvenir shop! Parking available (tickets can be validated at the exit to reduce the fee). Attention: parking garage is quite narrow.
Not very big, you can see all exhibits in 2-3 hours. A wide variety of animals, most of them seem to have sufficient space and good living conditions. Generally, it's a good alternative to the hustle and bustle of Heidelberg Old Town.
The zoo is very well organized and contains a wide variety of animals. It also has plenty of benches and open spaces for walking and sitting. Unfortunately, I was unlucky during my visit because many animals were not in their enclosures at that time. My advice to future visitors is to go early in order to see all the animals.
A lot to see, definitely a great place to connect with the wildlife and nature. Recommended but the price could be lower.
After ending up in Heidelberg almost by accident, I really liked my time at this zoo. Sure it's on the smaller side, and I feel some of the primate enclosures could do with a redo, but otherwise this is a lovely place, and it includes many interesting and obscure animals, like the Syrian brown bear. It struck me as an especially child-friendly zoo, with plenty of play areas and neat educational displays that cater to them. It's a real hidden gem amongst German zoos.
There were a lot of animals visible and active when I was there, and it was nice to see that there were enrichment items in their enclosures. It was a nice experience that you could walk in certain enclosures. Dogs are also allowed in, though not everywhere. It's a relatively small zoo. Unfortunately, there weren't as many English signs available. It also wasn't entirely clear which exit led directly to the outside and which one to the store.
Super cute, small zoo. Dogs are allowed in this zoo. There are dog waist disposal bags around the zoo. They cannot enter some of the buildings, such as the primates (understandably). We loved how many animals have interesting cages with playing opportunities. Some though don’t have a lot of space. The playgrounds for kids are also interesting. We haven’t been to many German zoo’s. Darmstadt is rather small as well and surely less equipped than Heidelberg, both for the animals and the visitors (changes are coming up though). Darmstadt does have reptiles and fishes (even though very reduced). And we have been to Frankfurt, which is definitely the biggest zoo of the three. That is a completely different experience altogether. We would recommend Heidelberg zoo for its cosy and intimate character.

A medium-small historic city full of heritage. Highly visited by the tourists from around Europe and globe because of its heritage and beauty. The downtown is boarded by the river in one side and the mountains in the other side. The mountains are the main attraction of this city. I would highly recommend to climb to the palace and enjoy the view of the whole city from the top :)
Beautiful mountain that overlooks the city. Really love the view here
You can take a detour off the Philosophenweg to spend some time exploring the Heiligenberg. This sandstone hill is 440 metres high and features Heidelberg’s oldest signs of habitation. The oldest of all is the Celtic defensive wall going back to the 4th century BC. Keep going to the summit and you’ll be met by the ruins of the 11th-century Monastery of St Michael, which was abandoned almost 500 years ago. There are also two viewing towers you can climb: The Heiligenbergturm dates to the 19th century but was actually built with sandstone blocks from the defunct 11th-century Monastery of St Stephen. There’s also a tower honouring the first German chancellor Otto von Bismarck, erected in 1903.
Best place for a small trek!!!
Definitely worth a visit. Especially because of its history and the surrounding forest is very nice to go for a walk or a longer hike towards Heidelberg. 😊
Nice place. Away from all the sound from the busy Heidelberg. The view of the castle from here is too good. You also have beer garden near by. Where you can chill. I would really advise you to Trek but there is also road and ample parking place in the top.
It was great hike to Heiligenberg. The place is amazing, peacefull and great to just chill.
Very nice place, people are good, quite place.heidelberg castle very beautiful.

Colossal, 18th-century wine vat in a castle basement with a viewing deck on top, plus wine tasting.
Slide 1 of 8
Extremely huge barrel! It was built in 1751 and stands seven meters high, is eight and a half meters wide, holds 220,000 liters. Wine tasting is available.
Built in 1751 with capacity of over 220,000 liter! 7 meters diameter!
Apparently the largest barrel used to be behind glass, but no longer. You can climb up the steps and walk across the top. Pretty cool but not much more than a quick selfie stop. It's included in the castle entrance ticket. We were here on a Monday so it wasn't quite so crowded. There's a small bistro area next to the barrels if looking at them makes you thirsty.
Interesting to see such large barrels, presumably for alcohol. You can try out wines here too
World’s largest wine barrel. Don’t forget to take a picture while standing in front of the barrel. You will feel the significance of its hugeness. Worth the time and visit. The entrance is included with the Bergbahn panorama ticket.
The history of the barrel is amazing. You can't even imagine the size of the barrel until you are there. Hint: Don't let the barrel just inside the entrance fool you. That's not the large one. I was so disappointed at how many people of decided to defame the room and have started to do so on a historic artifact. Too bad not everyone values history. Side note: Make sure to visit the Apothecary Museum in the same courtyard. It is basically across from it. That, too, was interesting.
This giant wine barrel is inside the Heidelberg castle. It downs stairs with an adjacent beer and wine bar. This is very cool to see after the castle tour and grab a drink. The barrel is about two stories tall and you can take the stairs to walk on top of it.
Visiting the Heidelberg Tun is an impressive wine barrel built in 1751 following the destruction of its predecessor. There are two large barrels to see one is as tall as the rooms it is housed in as you make your way to the largest one. The largest is much bigger with stairs going down to see the the main body, and the enormous stands that hold it, then stairs going up to see the dance floor built on top of it used when the barrel held wine and was the center of the party.

Iconic city landmark bronze statue of a monkey, a popular photo backdrop.
Slide 1 of 8
Iconic at the bridge, remember to touch the hands, mirror, mice and rear, basically all of it - for good luck and propserity, and perhaps to come back one day!
Fun little highlight during a sightseeing trip. - Don’t forget to put your head inside ! 😉 Be prepared to wait in line for your real touristy experience
It is smaller than it looks in the photos. Many people seemed to delight in taking pics with their head in its mouth or jaw or whatever. Just a little photo op when you’re at the old bridge
do it if you wanna come back again! ;)
Heidelberg monkey is a symbol of ugliness, shamelessness, lechery, and vanity. The monkey is said to be good luck. Rubbing the mirror will bring you money; rubbing his fingers will ensure your return to Heidelberg; and rubbing the little bronze mice nearby will bring you fertility. A plaque with a poem ; (Why are you staring at me?/Haven’t you seen the old monkey of Heidelberg/Look to and fro/There you will find many more of my own kind.) Visitors can have view of Heidelberg Palace on the other side of the river.
It’s a cute set of sculptures with a monkey and two mice. The monkey’s head is hollow. Tourists like to have their pictures taken by standing behind the monkey’s face. The monkey holds a mirror in his hands. It is said that touching the mirror will bring you wealth. If you stroke the outstretched little and index finger of the monkey’s right hand, this means that you are coming back to Heidelberg. If touching the mice next to the monkey, lots of children are predicted. Lol. Such a legend. No wonder the mirror, the fingers and the mice are all so shiny.
Brückenaffe means bridge monkey 🐒🌉 It's a cute piece of art. It is said touching the gold disk will bring wealth, rubbing the fingers ensures a return to Heidelberg.
Heidelburg is a great city to visit, especially in December. This is our third trip here and we enjoy it more each time. This time we stayed at the Hotel Hollander Hof which was near the Old Bridge and not far from Scholss Heidelburg.

Landmark amphitheater in a forested landscape, built by Nazis & later used by American forces.
Slide 1 of 8
Nice, pretty easy hike to this old Nazi Amphitheatre. It's definitely worth seeing; feels a little strange to be in the middle of a place where awful things were once said, and now it's being slowly reclaimed by nature. Feels like something out of a movie.
Marvelous! The stones are designed to stand the test of time and nature🙂 Brilliant place to relax and read a book and sun bath. Very serene as well. It says from the map that it takes around 40minutes or so from Philosophers way but it took me around 1 hour and 30minutes i guess due to my stride and me taking some videos and photos on the way down. The hiking routes are also very well marked. Some of the arrows were covered in some kinda stickers or graffiti but it's still readable.
When I was stationed in Heidelberg we would go hang out here. It is a amazing piece of history and so few know about it Easy to find. there was a watch tower that could view the river to watch coming and going from traffic
A must visit! Just follow the road up to the top until you can't go further then park in the car park past the bar, walk further and you will be inside it!
Such an amazing place, highly recommended especially in summer or spring. you need to go through the woods to reach the open doors theater, so maybe it is a good idea to have your friends along.
This intact NS-site is worth visiting, when u have an interest in history of word war 2 at least. The hike to it, is also worthwhile.. The heiligenberg, is offcourse good for walks in the forest!
Beautiful historical place, very suitable for a refreshing walk , not to be missed if you are in Heidelberg.
Very nice place to visit. The hike up is not that bad as it’s covered by trees.

Views of Heidelberg & the Neckar River draw crowds to this scenic hill accessible via funicular.
Slide 1 of 8
If you got an extra day for Heidelberg, would recommend it for a nice hike. The view is worth the effort in a sunny day! However, I would not recommend for elderlies as the trail is quite steep. (It’s essentially climbing stairs for one hour).
Nice views from the top but the single panorama ticket I purchased can only be used on the way up, not the way down. I hiked up and was not allowed to ride down, which was not made clear when buying the ticket, it only specified "single".
This is the peak of the trip going up by funicular the whole ride is like 1 hr if you don’t stop at the schloss. The panoramic view is nice and lots of trail to hike and kid playgrounds.
You could enjoy nice evening view from here. There is no lot of attractions but one view is great. I don’t feel it’s worth to take the car to top with 9€. Instead get public bus to there. Walking to there also will be great but not with small kids. You could also enjoy drink there. I didn’t tried any.
Königstuhl in Heidelberg offers stunning panoramic views of the city and the Neckar River, making it a great spot for nature lovers. Easily accessible by funicular railway, it provides hiking trails, a castle view, and a serene atmosphere. A must-visit for those seeking peace and natural beauty near Heidelberg.
We wasted time and money for a view that you can't see the castle from high trees. Long queue that may take up to an hour. I don't understand why they allow empty strollers to board the small, narrow, wooden, slow carriage. A stroller takes up space for four people sitting opposite each other. They should have provided a safe place for strollers and not allowed them to board with us.
You can choose between hiking and Funicular, but I would recommend to do hiking up and funicular down (for you knees but walking back is easier) spectacular views, lots of native lives, it’s enjoyable. Lots of different paths, and it’s up to you depending on your physical strength. The stairs are the hardest ones. When you reach to the top, the view will repay you! There are kiosks selling drinks and snacks as well, and a restaurant, children’s park, and a hotel. At the funicular station, you can see how it works under the funicular and interesting fact about it. It was very nice visit up there!
Great place to visit. You can see the whole Heidelberg from Top. If you have a student ticket or any train pass it is free to use the transportation. Just show your ticket and Id card to the ticket counter. * Internal Castle view is not included.

An absolutely must-visit place! Visiting the legendary Alte Aula (Great Hall) plus the little museum inside was an exciting experience. The ticket costs only 4 euros, there were no lines, when we visited. The Great Hall is beautiful beyond imagination, the details are captivating. The hall was renovated in 1886, switching the architectural style from Baroque to Renaissance.
I was very well impressed with this visit, it was like going into a " time travel capsule"! The Heidelberg University one of the oldest universities in the world and the oldest in Germany. It was founded in 1386, during the time of the Holy Roman Empire.
It looks nice but quite small outside. In Sunday, it’s not open for visitors.
Great hall ! So beautiful
(Translated by Google) The prison is great. The inscriptions are very interesting. Unfortunately we couldn't visit the highlight, the hall. He was banned all day for an event. This information must be provided when purchasing the tickets! This is very annoying. (Original) Der Karzer ist toll. Die Inschriften sind sehr interessant. (Translated by Google) For me, Heidelberg is one of Germany's top cities—a perfect blend of impressive architecture and rich history. It's impressive to learn that this building once housed the Studentenkarzer (student prison). The Lion Fountain, featuring the lion, the heraldic animal of the Palatinate and Heidelberg, also once provided important water. Today, these historic walls house the Rectorate, the University Museum, and the impressive Old Auditorium.
