Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Museum
Heidelberg Castle, a 16th-century red sandstone fortress, stands proudly on a hillside overlooking the Altstadt and the Neckar River. Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the castle's interior and marvel at its Renaissance architecture. The castle is accessible via a steep cobbled trail or by taking the Bergbahn cogwheel train from Kornmarkt station.
We took the fernicular up and the ticket included entrance to the castle courtyard, big wine barrel and apothecary museum. If those things don't interest you and you don't mind walking a steep incline to get there, you can explore the castle grounds for free - most of the interior is not accessible to visitors, anyway. There's plenty to see outside, including beautiful views of the river and the old town.
Amy T — Google review
Dating back to the 13th century, this castle is impressive and has a unique architectural character compared with other castles. Several sections have been carefully restored, while others are intentionally kept as ruins, which adds to its atmosphere. You can visit a fascinating pharmacy laboratory museum inside, though access to the other interior areas is unfortunately restricted. The grounds include an enormous garden and provide breathtaking views of the city. Entrance fee is 11,00 € for adults. Walking through the castle and soaking up its centuries-old history was an unforgettable experience.
Evren B — Google review
Very beautiful view over the whole city including the hills, the river, and a breathtaking sunset in the horizon. The garden is sooo big and “instagrammable” with many spots for selfies and photos. The castle is not big but has a beautiful winery, restaurant, small museum, beautiful facade, but most importantly an amazing high terrace overlooking the city. The tickets include a ride on the cable tramway taking you all the way to the tip of the mountain. A beautiful ride and nice view.
Ghada N — Google review
Absolutely beautiful place! The views over Heidelberg are stunning, and the castle itself is full of history and charm. Great mix of ruins and restored areas, with lots to explore. A must-see if you’re in the area! The bergbahn is really close by too if you have tickets to go back into altstadt
Jack F — Google review
This castle truly has a mystic vibe to it! The red-brick theme, and the fact that its in ruins but still very well maintained adds to its appeal. Highly recommend visiting in fall/autumn as it looks super aesthetic with the green-yellow-red-brown leaves all around the magnificent castle! We didn't go inside but just taking a stroll around it and outside was super beautiful and makes for a good outing in Heidelberg!
Bhairavi G — Google review
Visiting Heidelberg Castle felt like stepping into a storybook. The walk up is a bit steep, but completely worth it for the stunning views over the city and the Neckar River. The castle itself has a beautiful mix of grandeur and ruin, which gives it so much character and history. I especially enjoyed wandering through the gardens and taking in the scenery. My recommendation is to take your time and just enjoy the atmosphere as well as to go before the sunset. Highly recommended!
A. K — Google review
I visited Heidelberg and Stuttgart from October 26–31. The weather was slightly chilly and the crowds were light, which made the trip relaxing. Heidelberg Castle was beautiful with great views, and both cities felt calm and easy to explore.
Nisit K — Google review
If your visiting Heidelberg, it is worthwhile to visit this castle. I wish there was more to see. Nevertheless, the view of the city was fantastic. The gardens were tranquil. I found the apothecary museum very fascinating.. the relics from the past were quite interesting.

Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
Historic Sites
The Old Bridge Heidelberg, constructed in 1788, is an iconic pedestrian bridge that offers stunning views of the city's landmarks. It connects the Neckar River to Neuenheim Old Town and is made of classic red sandstone. The bridge leads to the romantic ruins of an old castle that once served as a heavily fortified Gothic stronghold and later as one of Germany's most magnificent residences. Unfortunately, much of the structure was destroyed during wars in the 17th century and never rebuilt.
The Heidelberg Old Bridge is a charming piece of history connecting the old town with the other side of the Neckar River. Walking across it feels like stepping into a fairy tale—cobblestone paths, beautiful statues (including the famous monkey!), and a postcard-perfect view of the castle above. It’s especially magical at sunrise or sunset. Great spot for photos, a leisurely stroll, or just soaking in the atmosphere of this timeless city.
ABHIRAJ Y — Google review
The old bridge of Heidelberg is one of the most rated tourist attraction and is worth the walk. The bridge is located across the river and overlooking the castle. You need to visit both in the day and in the night to experience the view of the castle. The scenery is really beautiful and picturesque. The walk to the old town surrounded by restaurants me the walk even special.
Aravind R — Google review
I am walking on the Old Bridge in Heidelberg. The views are amazing and there are many spots to take photos. The bridge has a beautiful historic charm and you can see the river and the old town from here. It is a perfect place to enjoy a peaceful stroll and capture memories.
Volkan O — Google review
The Old Bridge in Heidelberg is simply stunning. Standing on it feels like being right in the middle of all the beauty — the river, the castle above, and the charming old town around you. It’s such a picturesque and peaceful spot, perfect for soaking in the atmosphere of Heidelberg
Shenay N — Google review
The Old Bridge in Heidelberg is simply stunning, no matter the weather. I visited on a cloudy, rainy day and it still took my breath away — the views of the Neckar River, the castle on the hill, and the Altstadt are just magical. The bridge itself has so much charm and character, with its stone arches and historic vibe. It’s a perfect spot for a quiet walk, photos, or just taking in the atmosphere of the city. A must-see if you’re in Heidelberg — it really captures the spirit of the place.
Jack F — Google review
This bridge looks good and walking on the also give good view for your eyes. Not crowded. River view is really good from the this bridge. It’s paved with stone. Entrance has big towers that add on to good view. But this only on south side of the bridge. Really worth to visit this bridge. In autumn season will get nice view of castle.
Jolly J — Google review
Old Bridge in Heidelberg is a popular tourist spot and a great place for photos, especially near the famous monkey statue. From the bridge, you get beautiful views of the Neckar River. You can enjoy boating on the river or take a walk along the nearby garden on its banks for a relaxing experience.

Specialty Museums
The German Pharmacy Museum, located within Heidelberg Castle, offers a captivating journey through the history of pharmacy and medicinal practices. With over 20,000 exhibits spanning 2,000 years, visitors can explore the evolution of medicine from ancient folk remedies to modern pharmaceutical science. The museum showcases antique pharmaceutical tools, laboratory equipment, medicinal herbs, books, and historical documents. It provides a unique glimpse into the development of healthcare and is a must-visit for those interested in the history of science and medicine.
Fascinating This is a little jewel of a museum in the grounds of the Schloss Heidelberg (included in the Schloss entry fee). The displays were beautiful, and there was a lot of fascinating historical information (in both English and German) about the evolution of apothecaries and development of the pharmaceutical industry.
Suzie L — Google review
Within Heidelberg Castle is this museum, which in great detail tells the history of medicines through the ages. Many visits would be required to take it all in. The sheer number of exhibits, set out as Apothecary shops is amazing
Mick P — Google review
This is museum, that you can find in the Heidelberg castle. It has a couple big rooms, where you can find a lot of shelves with apothecary glass. It interesting. But it is a pity that you can’t buy some glass like in museum. Only one bottle there was.
Lorelin L — Google review
The museum is quite small so there's a traffic light system at the entrance in an attempt to keep it from overcrowding but, in my experience, it didn't work. Perhaps people just ignore it. I found it far too packed inside to see even a fraction of all the interesting exhibits, let alone stop to read the labels. A shame, because it's a really well curated museum and fascinating subject.
Amy T — Google review
It’s not very big, but it’s full of fascinating displays including but not limited to old jars, herbal remedies, antique tools and entire reconstructed apothecary shops. It gave me a real sense of how medicine was prepared centuries ago. I loved how detailed everything was and it made me appreciate how far science has come while still being connected to old traditions. If you are already at the castle, it’s definitely worth stepping inside. Quite informative & unique.
A. K — Google review
I found this museum very interesting as it traces the history of medicine through the ages. It's a small and well organized museum. There is verbiage that guides you though the history. It's housed inside the Heidelberg castle. The crowd management is good
Bharathi M — Google review
An interesting exhibition about pharmacy. The entry is free and it is inside the castle
Hoàng T — Google review
I think this Apothecary Museum is good place to look around because it displays old days interiors of historic apothecaries. Furthermore admission fee is included in the castle ticket so that it is better and easier, no reason not to see this. With jars, herbs, powders its antique atmosphere was good and it was also a little fun to find things or medicines that I know of. It’s good enough, but may be a better place when visiting with kids.

Heidelberg Zoo is a beloved animal park located on the picturesque banks of the Neckar River. It houses over 1,100 animals from more than 250 species, including elephants, tigers, gorillas, sea lions, red pandas, and brown bears. The zoo actively participates in conservation efforts through programs like WAPCA and EEP to raise awareness about endangered species.
We had an awesome time here. We had looked this place up on the internet and I am glad I did. It was a charming beautiful in center of Heidelberg. It had animals from all over the world. My 11 year old son was fascinated by the Barbary 🦁 lion, which is extinct in the wild. The zoo also offers a amazing pirate playground which was very cool I strongly recommend this Zoo
Angélica P — Google review
A very beautiful zoo with a bunch of unusual animals plus the classics. Lots of shade. Beautiful playgrounds. Entrance price is ok. Food places available but it was rather disappointing (cold hot dog sausages) for the price. Lots of interesting facts about nation and preserving the environment can be found all over the place. Fun activities are all over the place. The petting zoo was my kids’ highlight of the day with the baby goats actually sitting on our laps! Most of the animals have nice living areas - some others are currently under construction. Speaking of construction: the map should be updated! Nice souvenir shop! Parking available (tickets can be validated at the exit to reduce the fee). Attention: parking garage is quite narrow.
Chrissi H — Google review
Not very big, you can see all exhibits in 2-3 hours. A wide variety of animals, most of them seem to have sufficient space and good living conditions. Generally, it's a good alternative to the hustle and bustle of Heidelberg Old Town.
Andrzej J — Google review
The zoo is very well organized and contains a wide variety of animals. It also has plenty of benches and open spaces for walking and sitting. Unfortunately, I was unlucky during my visit because many animals were not in their enclosures at that time. My advice to future visitors is to go early in order to see all the animals.
Mohamed A — Google review
A lot to see, definitely a great place to connect with the wildlife and nature. Recommended but the price could be lower.
Tobiasz M — Google review
After ending up in Heidelberg almost by accident, I really liked my time at this zoo. Sure it's on the smaller side, and I feel some of the primate enclosures could do with a redo, but otherwise this is a lovely place, and it includes many interesting and obscure animals, like the Syrian brown bear. It struck me as an especially child-friendly zoo, with plenty of play areas and neat educational displays that cater to them. It's a real hidden gem amongst German zoos.
Baranguirus — Google review
There were a lot of animals visible and active when I was there, and it was nice to see that there were enrichment items in their enclosures. It was a nice experience that you could walk in certain enclosures. Dogs are also allowed in, though not everywhere. It's a relatively small zoo. Unfortunately, there weren't as many English signs available. It also wasn't entirely clear which exit led directly to the outside and which one to the store.
Mary-Ann L — Google review
Super cute, small zoo. Dogs are allowed in this zoo. There are dog waist disposal bags around the zoo. They cannot enter some of the buildings, such as the primates (understandably). We loved how many animals have interesting cages with playing opportunities. Some though don’t have a lot of space. The playgrounds for kids are also interesting. We haven’t been to many German zoo’s. Darmstadt is rather small as well and surely less equipped than Heidelberg, both for the animals and the visitors (changes are coming up though). Darmstadt does have reptiles and fishes (even though very reduced). And we have been to Frankfurt, which is definitely the biggest zoo of the three. That is a completely different experience altogether. We would recommend Heidelberg zoo for its cosy and intimate character.

Art museum
The Kurpfälzisches Museum, located in the former Morass Mansion on Heidelberg's main pedestrian street, is a prominent art institution founded in 1869. The museum offers contemporary exhibits spread across three floors and encompasses a wide range of art and archaeology focusing on the Palatinate region of Germany.
⭐The diversity of the exhibition is stunning. Surprise after surprise. Fine arts, industrial arts, archaeological finds, maritime technologies, furniture, musical instruments, and so on. ⭐Audio guide available in German, English and Russian. Included in the ticket. ⭐Ticket is at an amazing price of 1.80 euro for Sundays and public holidays. 3 euro on other days. ⭐Bag check is self-service and costs nothing. The lockers require no coins to operate. This is really convenient. ⭐If you love reading about history and art, two hours can be easily passed here without a moment of boredem.
Handan B — Google review
This is honestly a hidden gem of Heidelberg. It looks small but it's bigger than you think. For me the highlights were the archaeological wings. I was not expecting the artifacts related to the cult of Mithras to be there. This should be probably well advertised as there are a lot of Roman Empire enjoyers.
Dinesh K — Google review
it was a Sunday and we just got into the town and we walked past the museum and I walked in and the person that works behind the cash register was so nice and explained everything to me in English, which I’m always happy that we decided to enjoy the museum and I’m glad we did. The museum has three floors on it. Very interesting art all different kinds of art. Something for everyone nice clean bathroom and they give you free coffee in the gift shop They have a second building and a beautiful garden. They don’t accept credit cards unless it’s a German credit card which I find peculiar only cash It’s definitely worth your visit if you’re in this town.
Harriet M — Google review
I was pleasantly surprised by how much the Museum had to offer. The entrance fee was very affordable (3€), which already made the visit feel worthwhile but the museum itself exceeded my expectations. Although the building looks fairly small from the outside, the museum is much larger than it appears and is actually spread across two buildings. Inside, there is a rich variety of historical exhibits, including beautifully preserved furniture, old paintings and a fascinating collection of artifacts. I especially enjoyed learning about the history of Heidelberg Castle and the famous Old Bridge as the museum provides a lot of interesting background information and context (note that most of the information aren’t written in English). Walking through the rooms felt like stepping back in time and the exhibits are well-organized and easy to follow. Whether you’re interested in art, local history or simply enjoy discovering something new, the Kurpfälzisches Museum is definitely worth a visit. Overall, I highly recommend it.
A. K — Google review
A nice little museum in the Morass palace. I saw some fascinating pieces of wooden furniture and musical instruments. The interactive game with the 3D view of Heidelberd was great! I could choose one of 3 epochs (Celtic, Roman and Renaissance) and see how the city looked like during those time periods. It was fun and interesting. The tickets are very cheap - only 3 euros (including the free audio guide).
Mariam H — Google review
Small collection of exhibits. Well maintained museum. Nice in summer and you can sit outside enjoying the greens and the fountain
Megan W — Google review
Cheap tickets and large collections, with art gallery too! Free coffee and tea at the museum shop for visitors, which is an unusual but good touch for a museum. Only cash and EC-card are accepted by the time of visit (24.Sept 2025).
Lok Y — Google review
Art and history museum that covers the full history of this town, starting from the pre-roman era to the 20th Century. The museum has 2 buildings: an historic building at the street side and a modern museum in the garden. In the historic building, some rooms show how houses would be furnished in various eras.

Studentenkarzer, located at the Old University in Augustinergasse, is a historic university prison that was in use from 1778 to 1914. This private jail was used to discipline students for minor transgressions and fashionable stunts known as "Kavaliersdelikte." The cells are adorned with graffiti and paintings left behind by the detained students.
Well worth the 6 euros (or 4 on a Monday) to enter. Only a couple of rooms, but interesting insight into the past life of Heidelberg students.
Arnaud T — Google review
Loved this quirky site. It has been really well preserved and although there aren't many rooms to look in, you can check out other areas of the university and it's history to make it a decent visit. Quite a few Nobel Peace Prizes as well as significant scientific discoveries have come out of the University of Heidelberg.
Heather M — Google review
One of the wackest "attractions" I've ever visited. Its hard to imagine the university once had the authority to lock up its students for minor misdemeanours like public drunkenness and taunting cops. I assumed that majority of the past "inmates" would have been student activists, and some were, but it turns out that most were just regular silly buggers! Love the wall art they left behind for us to explore though. A truly unique experience that I couldn't miss while in Heidelberg, but others may not find it so interesting or worthwhile.
Amy T — Google review
Nice place to feel the mood of the students at late 1890s and early 1900s. There are almost no explanations - the pictures and German poems, comments with jokes, sarcasm, and resentment are the contents that attracts you. If you don't understand German, no problem - take your smartphone and translate the german writings into your native language using google translation. And maybe remembering how you felt when you were in collage may help understanding the context. However, I believe people would appreciate if any explanations or pamphlets exist in other languages.
ZinBok Y — Google review
This student prison is famous for it's graffiti - you visit it together with the university museum. The museum itself describes the history of the university, which is the oldest one Germany. But understanding all the texts might be a challenge if you don't know enough German.

A total joy! These establishments need to be immediately brought to the USA.

Interesting and uncomplicating entry. Visiting time approx 20 minutes. English introductions and Infos partially available. Please dont touch the wall in order to preserve the art!

Nestled in the heart of Heidelberg's vibrant Market Square, the Heiliggeistkirche, or Church of the Holy Spirit, stands as a magnificent testament to Gothic architecture. Dating back to its first mention in 1239 and later expanded by Elector Ruprecht III in 1398, this grand structure has served as both a place of worship and a communal hub for centuries.
If you’re in Heidelberg, the Heiliggeistkirche is an absolute must. From the outside it’s striking—gothic architecture with red sandstone, soaring spires and a baroque roof that really dominates the Altstadt. Inside, it’s calm and atmospheric. There’s a quiet beauty in its simplicity; large high ceilings, stained glass windows, just enough decoration to feel sacred without being overwhelming. Definitely a place to soak in some history, architecture, and quiet — I’d return just to watch light playing through the windows
Jack F — Google review
Really cool architecture and great view from the castle. You can go inside, but we did not have time. No shortage of stuff to see.
Don D — Google review
It’s very big church, most of the church in Germany will be rich with art work. This not the same . Still its construction is good. Not crowded when I visited on Tuesday. Lot of restaurants are close to it. It’s located very close the riverside
Jolly J — Google review
Heiliggeistkirche is one of the most beautiful churches in Heidelberg. People come here for workshops and to experience peace and calm."
Ankit D — Google review
Beautiful church in the middle of the square between Heidelberg Castle and The Old Bridge.
Christopher G — Google review
Spent 45 minutes in quiet reflection of what the cross of Christ means - watching the slowly turning multi-coloured glass cross. The more understated decorum inside the church, with high ceilings and stained glass windows, creates a more engaging atmosphere.
Rob B — Google review
Not really worth going up the tower, unless you have really run out of things to do. Views are lovely, but not as good as from the Philosophenweg.
Joseph T — Google review
Visiting Heiliggeistkirche was nice on the way of the shopping street and marketplace. The light through the stained glass made the whole space calm. I didn’t clim the tower but it’s highly recommended to see the old town and river spread out below. The church isn’t flashy but it carries a quiet beauty that stayed with me long after I left.

Jesuitenkirche is an 18th-century Baroque church located in the former Jesuit quarter of Heidelberg. Unlike most churches, it faces south instead of east. The interior features whitewashed walls and a striking 18th-century altar painting. Adorned with sculptures and intricate designs, the ornate facade reflects Baroque architecture. Throughout history, the church has served various purposes including as a military hospital and university library.
The Church of the Jesuits is a very welcoming and interesting church in the heart of the Old Town. They tend to put exhibitions of symbolic nature, and during December for Christmas they placed one of my all time favorite Krippen ever. The thought, symbolism and skill putting this great piece of art left me stunned. I am so grateful to have visited this Church and would love to see such exhibitions again. The altar and the orgel are also incredibly beautiful. Everything is so clean and calm that you feel in a very comfortable atmosphere.

Built between 1712 and 1759 this beautiful, Baroque, Roman Catholic Cathedral is the largest and most important church in Heidelberg and is certainly a must visit while in town. I went to a Jesuit college myself so I have been in and around many Jesuit buildings and this is one of the prettier ones that I’ve ever seen. It’s very unique in that the inside is all alabaster white and really feels like you are in the clouds. It’s quite large on the inside, but not nearly as large as some other ones that you will see in Italy or in Cologne. There was no entry fee, and there were only a few other people inside all of which were there for prayer. We saw one other tourist couple entering as we were exiting so it’s a very quiet and serene place to check out. It’s right in the middle of old town so it’s an easy walk to all the historical sites of Heidelberg. I would honestly recommend for anyone to visit, especially if you are catholic.

For the world to see! An architectural gem not to be missed! Arriving by train from Frankfurt, it was an overcast occasionally misty morning in Heidelberg - unbeknownst to us, also a city known for its science! Making our way by bus towards old-town, our anticipation was undeterred by whatever nature’s intentions might be. We were also thrilled, imagining how magical this city would soon be during the upcoming Christmas season - mountain snowfall, festival lights, music, holiday cheer - all combined with a spirit of love. A day earlier we were inspired by a married couple met in Bacharach who had highly recommended visiting Heidelberg. So, here we were! So much to see! Never enough time! Six hours until our train departs! A student of genealogy, I thought of my German great-great grandparents, wondering whether they’d ever visited Heidelberg. I felt certain they had! Arriving near the old-town market square, we found our way into the tourist information office, where we randomly met a local guide, encouraging we visit the Jesuit church. “A must see”, we were told. So glad to have learned this informational tidbit. My aging father graduated long ago from a Jesuit university. This visit was for you Dad! Off we went, trekking the few hundred meters distance along the main boulevard. Finally turning left, this amazing structure was before us. At the front entrance we were pleased finding it remained unlocked. The time, approximately 1pm. Walking inside, I removed my cap, finding an awe-inspiring house of worship. Yes, it was indeed beautiful, but notably serene. A serenity of peace, kindness, and love; much-needed in this present day turbulent world, a world seemingly always mired in conflict. We sat, we admired, we prayed, seeking personal serenity. And while my wife continued praying for our daughter, I was being drawn by the welcoming architecture, the uniquely designed Stations of the Cross, and the magnificent crystalline cross, a pristine like prism, positioned to ceiling hang along the center aisle, before reaching the altar. Never have I seen such sparkling ingenuity. Each soft subtle movement of the cross reflecting nature’s changing moods. I wanted to know more, while thoughtfully pondering whether my mood had changed, since entering this house of God. Truth is, it had. A door to serenity, simplicity, and prayer, had been nudged open at a time when it was personally most needed. Thank-you to the unknown guide for recommending this splendid masterpiece be visited!

Really nice old church with plenty of seating and a calming atmosphere. A little out of the way so it is less busy then others. Active church.

Beautiful church with impressive architecture We visited the Jesuit Church of the Holy Spirit and St. Ignatius on August 13th, 2025, and it was an absolutely beautiful experience. The architecture is stunning, with its bright white interior, elegant chandeliers, and intricate details that create a peaceful and uplifting atmosphere. It is also a great place for photography, as you can take your time capturing the beauty of the church without feeling rushed. Another big plus is that entry is completely free, which makes it even more accessible for anyone visiting Heidelberg. If you appreciate architecture, history, or simply want a quiet moment during your trip, this church is a must-see. Highly recommended. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a beautiful church in Heidelberg. Usually, during the week, the organ player practices different movements and parts from musical pieces. It is mesmerizing to be inside at that time. The acoustics are flawless.

Enjoy the beautiful church and the intricate details of the Saint statues. During mass, the organist played beautifully. Do not miss out on the museum. Inside the church and to the left. The entrance is almost hidden. Go upstairs and enjoy years of history and dedication to the church.

This church is very unique as it is so stark white and modern. Looks like it’s just been painted with “bright white”. The church is big and really quite beautiful in its uniqueness. The organ is impressive and beautiful too. I felt my spirits lifted wandering around here.

Neckarwiese is a popular riverside park located on the north bank of the Neckar River in Heidelberg, Germany. It is a favorite spot for locals, families, and students to enjoy outdoor activities during the summer. The park features open lawn areas, walking paths, and numerous playgrounds. Visitors can relax on the grassy stretches or take a leisurely stroll through the leafy trees and green spaces while enjoying views of the river.
Especially in summer, it is a busy field along the Neckar river. It covers around two kilometers along and can be quite narrow in the edges. Many people of all ages enjoy the warm days among friends. Be aware that the garden has geese as permanent residents thus feces are everywhere. If you want to sit around, bring alone a mat or similar.

A Perfect Day at Neckarwiese! This place is pure bliss! Neckarwiese is the perfect combination of nature, chill vibes, and city charm. I spent an unforgettable sunny day here—bare legs in the grass, cold beer in hand, surrounded by blooming tulips, cherry blossoms, and the calm flow of the Neckar river. The park is huge, clean, and full of good energy. It’s ideal for relaxing, walking, biking, or just laying down under a big tree and enjoying life. The spring colors are absolutely stunning, and the views across the river are postcard-worthy. Definitely a must-go if you’re visiting Heidelberg. Bring a picnic, your camera, and your good mood. You’ll leave recharged and smiling.

It’s a great place to spend the evening on the bank of the Neckar River with family and friends. People come here to play, enjoy a BBQ, read books, or simply watch the river flow. There’s also a play area for kids, making it a nice spot for everyone to relax.

One of the best parks I've ever walked in! Lots of wildlife (there are friendly geese everywhere and even a water vole!), people enjoying the weather, kids playing, students reading, and boats passing by in the river. Just lovely 🌹

Heidelberg Botanical Garden, situated on the grounds of Heidelberg University, is a serene oasis boasting a rich history dating back to 1593. This renowned attraction houses an impressive collection of over 10,000 plant species and features expansive greenhouses. While serving as a hub for research and conservation efforts, it also welcomes visitors to explore its diverse array of flora.
great collection for relatively small botanical garden. its moderately well mintained and the entrance is free

Quite small, well-maintained, main focus on green houses. Some houses with big varieties of orchids and succulents however rather for researching purposes, not open publicly. It is said to be the third oldest botanical garden in Germany... Pretty relaxing to walk around.
Hien D — Google review
Small Botanical garden located right across the street from the Heidelberg Zoo. The highlight of the garden was the tropical garden located in the glass dome. The only place where you can buy food is the Heidelberg student food mensa located behind the gardens. I recommend you either eat there or bring your own food with drinks with you. The complete garden can be seen in 2 1/2 hours.

The garden is not very big, but well cured and there are lots of different plant species from all around the world. Plus, the entrance is free, and you can decide whether to give some money as free offer or not. And they also give you the possibility to buy some little plants just leaving a free offer :) super nice idea!

Fantastic series of charming greenhouses - ferns, tropical, cacti, lilies the highlights. Two year old had a wonderful time exploring, and staff were very helpful with her pram. Free of charge.

Great and diverse selection of climate zones in the greenhouses. Rather small but nevertheless interesting display of Flora in the outdoor sections which are divided into different areas of global vegetational zones. Definitely worth seeing as I spend several hours at the location. Nice opportunity to relax from the urban turbulances.

Amazing place to learn a lot of interesting things about plants. I appreciate Universities managing these botanical gardens, because it feels a lot more impactful and less "tourist-pleasing" to know that there is actual research going on. It was raining when we were there, but the partly canopy-covered outside parts as well as the large greenhouses make this botanical garden worth visiting even with a rain of 5l/minm²!

This winding path traverses through woodlands, vineyards, and gardens, providing stunning views of the city. Named after renowned philosophers who frequented it during the Romantic Era, this route leads to the university and features scenic viewpoints along the Schlangenweg.
A really beautiful place. If you aren't in shape the climb is a killer. I workout 3-5 times a week. My calves were on fire. When I got there, there were 80 year old Germans walking around like it was nothing. Hats off!

A beautiful trail with absolutely stunning panoramic views over Heidelberg and the Neckar River – perfect for photos of the old town and castle. Parking at Parkhaus Nordbrückenkopf (P16) cost me €7.50 for 3 hours, which felt a bit pricey, but honestly it was worth every cent. The BODY WORLDS Museum in Heidelberg showcases real human specimens preserved using plastination, offering a fascinating exploration of the human anatomy. The exhibition delves into the secrets hidden beneath our skin and provides insights into how different parts of our anatomy contribute to feelings of happiness. Visitors can engage with over 150 interactive exhibits that delve into organ health and function, including the intriguing Anatomy of Happiness display.
A really nice exhibition, very informative and interesting. Not for soft stomach. I won’t recommend this for kids because I feel it can be too much also for adults. I was there on Saturday morning and it wasn’t crowded at all. I liked the interactive activities where you can check pulse/blood pressure, and the stress level of your body. This can be a life changing experience that can truly affect the way we live our life and adjust the life choices we make. Highly recommend
Jelior — Google review
This was my second time at a Body Worlds exhibition, the first was at a touring one ~15 years ago, and I can't say I gained much from the second visit. Very much a 'seen one, seen them all' experience further dragged down by the fact how poorly designed the space is for managing such crowds. The endless rows of stage lights just a few meters from your head on the top floor make it extremely hot in the overcrowded place that has no AC. The building is probably a rental and not suitable for any sort of exhibition. Spent maybe 30 minutes inside total, not worth the €19 weekday price.
Bálint T — Google review
This exhibition is amazing, mind blowing, a controversial work of art. The attention to details can be seen and appreciated not only in the single objects exposed but in the way the museum itself is layered. Clean, spacious, good lighting. Very informative. An experience to be done at least once in life: makes you think deeply and revalue your existence.
Stefania C — Google review
Besides the plastinated bodies and body parts, the signs with each exhibit really get you thinking about understanding and taking care of your body. There were some young kids there in the 6-10 range who seemed interested as well. It's a little sad, a little scary, very informative but also motivating to treat your body right. I highly recommend it.

A great experience for anyone wanting to see what happens beneath the skin. Many interactive and entertaining elements for people of all ages. I would warn that some of the exhibits may be hard to see, but are very informative. Also! For the price, very affordable.

This time, I took a proactive approach by venturing out to find something enjoyable and beneficial for myself. Opting to explore Heidelberg alone, I visited a museum "Körperwelten Museum" where I immersed myself in learning and gained so much information, valuable insights and ideas. This museum provided me with invaluable insights into the functions of the human body. It not only shed light on the intricate connection between the body and mind but also showcased fascinating exhibits, such as the stark comparison between smokers' and non-smokers' lungs. Moreover, the detailed explanations on Alzheimer's disease and the stages of fetal development within the womb were particularly enlightening. The wealth of information offered here encourages deeper reflection on how we live and care for ourselves. I enjoyed my visit immensely, so much so that I made a dedicated two-hour journey just to experience it firsthand. The experience of spending just a couple of hours wandering around Heidelberg and indulging in the museum's offerings left me feeling fulfilled and content. Thank you. 🩷

Schwetzingen Palace, located just 15 minutes west of Heidelberg, is a vast 17th-century palace with ornamental gardens that have been preserved since their original design. The palace was the summer residence for a prominent family and reached its peak under Prince Elector Carl Theodor. It has a rococo theater and is known for its lavish antiquities.
Absolutely breathtaking gardens. From the moment you enter, the fee that you pay at the entrance becomes well worth it. Schwetzingen Palace offers you a glimpse of absolutely spectacular pieces of architecture, stonework, and landscape design. The symmetry of the gardens, the calmness of the water features, and the carefully curated garden styles make this place feel almost magical. Every corner has something unique to offer, from the grand mosque and Roman-style temple ruins to the ornately sculpted hedges and charming walking paths. You can easily spend hours here, whether you’re a history lover, nature enthusiast, or simply looking for a peaceful place to wander. I loved the spot. It’s perfect for slow walks, photography, or just sitting on a bench and taking it all in. Definitely a must-visit if you’re in the area. It’s not just a garden it’s an experience worth all your time. I would suggest spending at least a few hours to thoroughly explore everything. You must take the map that they offer at the entrance.

Breathtaking gardens and I had the pleasure to have a dinner event there that was definitely nice. All diets accommodated and the gardens alone would have been worth it. The history behind the palace is also as amusing as it is interesting. Would recommend it to friends if they are in the region.

Definitely must see. Unfortunately I was only in garden (I do recommend finding out when are English tours in castle). The garden is very big, with many historical buildings. Such as mosque, temples, bath and Roman ruins.

Did the hour tour through the palace. Great for anyone interested in learning more about the history. Gives more context to the garden as you walk through it. Went off season so the fountains weren’t running, but the autumn leaves were gorgeous and we still had a fun time exploring the vast number of landmarks. The mosque closes at 4pm so we missed it. The Roman water fort was surprisingly my favourite part. Definitely will return in the summer so I can enjoy a beer and picnic there! Also would love to see a concert in the theatre.

The memorial features his birthplace, exhibition rooms, and guided tours that bring to life his contributions to German history.

This is a really really good museum and super important to better know the history of Germany in last about 100 years and how the country is politically organized now. Well organized and guided with quality contents. You can also visit a medium class house from the end of the 19 century, quite representative and shocking. Please, do not forget the audio-guide which is super helpful, particuarly for non German speakers. I left a tipp because I truly enjoy and like it.

Michaelskloster Heiligenberg is a historic site located in southern Germany, with ruins dating back to the 5th century BC. The monastery was built in 1023 and offers panoramic views from its tower. The area is perfect for a peaceful hike, and visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins of the monastery. The site provides an opportunity to learn about the history of the monks who once lived there.
I loved finding and walking around these ruins but it was a HIKE to get up there. Not sure Google sent me a very good route as in places it was steep, rocky and occasionally obscured by fallen trees. I also walked a full lap around the site before finding the gate. Wish I'd been able to enjoy it longer, but by then I really needed a bathroom. There was a gasthaus that let me use the facilities for .50 cents as I wasn't a guest (gladly paid). They also had some nice postcards.

This place is truly magical. Brought my three kids ages 6, 4, and 2 years here today on a chilly September 2022 weekday afternoon. I'd been putting it off, as I didn't know how demanding it would be for myself and/or the kids, but finally a cool, non-rainy day happened and so we came. I put the Wanderparkplatz Heiligenberg as my Google Maps destination and arrived uneventfully. The parking lot is quite large, free, gravel, with many shaded spots. There are benches and informational signs at the lot. The path to the ruins is clearly marked, first bringing you by the beer garden (which, I might add, was PACKED on this Thursday afternoon) followed by the Thingstatte. The path is indeed stroller friendly until you get to the last 100 meters before the monestary, as long as you have a sturdy stroller (I used my double BOB stroller) and don't mind pushing it uphill - it was demanding but more than manageable pushing my 2 and 4 year olds up while the 6 year old walked (without any difficulty or complaint). I parked the stroller at the top of the Thingstatte where the rocky trail starts up toward the ruin and we all walked to the ruin without issue. Overall, the walk from the parking lot took roughly 15 minutes walking as fast as I could push the stroller up. The ruin itself is magnificent - there are two towers intact (both of which you can climb to the top of), and the bases of many rooms and halls with their windows and doors intact inviting you to explore, and almost every room is marked with its purpose both in written and graphic form, which my kids LOVED. I didn't have cell service so I couldn't translate the text at the time, so the images helped me understand what German words I didn't know. We explored the ruins for about 30 minutes; we only went to the top of the taller of the two towers, which was well lit with safe stone steps and a sturdy railing, then a non-covered top with high walls and great views. The entire area is quite sunny, so bring a hat or sunscreen during the summer months. These ruins have a fence with a gate surrounding it, which I'm sure is locked during closed hours, though the rest of the mountain is accessible 24/7 from what I could tell. These ruins alone would have been worth the 70 minute drive, but having the Thingstatte, St Stephen's monestary, and the well just added to the worth of the trip. I'm sure if we had stopped at the Biergarten I would have even more reason to say so! (not as fun being alone with three kids at a beer garden; maybe next time). Also take the time to explore the Keltenweg and Philosphenweg, which I didn't do given the circumstances, but wish I had known about them before coming and come a little earlier in the day. We did walk past the parking lot afterwards to visit the St Stephens monastery ruins and the old well, which were equally as interesting, and the tower had amazing views of Heidelberg. Overall, an absolute must see if you are anywhere in the area.

This site has been home to various stages of human culture dating back ~7000 years ago! Celts built a settlement there with a moat and rock wall defenses, the Romans conquered and built shrines to Jupiter and Mercury, and then you end with the Monastery (part of the Roman Shrine to Jupiter can be seen in the foundations). Great views from the towers, great location to immerse yourself in history!

A very important and moving museum. The lady at the desk was extremely helpful and welcoming. We had a very interesting discussion about the history of the museum. I love that this museum gives a voice to a neglected and mistreated group of people. For those who don’t speak German- I would recommend downloading the google app to live translate some of the captions. There is also a helpful booklet.

Kornmarkt is a charming square in Heidelberg, featuring the stunning Corn Market Madonna statue, erected in 1718 as part of recatholisation efforts. The square also boasts the elegant Palais Prince Carl and the French Count de Graimberg's pale yellow house. It offers a picturesque view of Heidelberg Castle and is surrounded by ice-cream shops, cafes, and the town hall building.
our first city for the start of our Europe vacation. lovely quiet old town in the early am before we took the ropeway to the Heidelberg Castle.

This is a square which was used for corn market(as the name says) where you can have the overview of the Heidelberg castle with hills and there is a statue of Maria holding a baby Jesus in the centre of the square. There are also many shops and restaurants near her along with the entrance with Funicular to Heidelberg castle. This must be the place you must be passing or visiting.

Very quaint little area. You can view the Heidelberg Palace from behind the water fountain which is the center of this little square.

The Marian column's weathering patterns indicate superior sandstone quality compared to nearby structures. Bench placement follows sun exposure patterns for optimal usage rates. Tourist congregation follows predictable hourly patterns peaking at 11:45am daily.

Really nice Christmas market with lots of inexpensive parking garages €1.80 per hour. Go to the Sahara restaurant for delicious shawarma. Park at P12 or 13

The Kornmarkt-Madonna is a fountain sculpture on the Kornmarkt in the old town of Heidelberg. Other names of the fountain are Marian's Column and Mother's Fountain. In 1718, the statue created by Peter van den Branden was placed on a pedestal in the middle of the square. The background is the religious conflicts between the majority reformed population in Heidelberg and the Catholic elector Karl Philipp. The statue of Mary is in the tradition of the specifically Catholic figures of Mary and saints and is to be regarded as a measure of counter-reformatory propaganda, which was promoted in Heidelberg, especially by the Jesuits. For the reformed Heidelberg population, this line-up amounted to a provocation. In the northwest corner of the Kornmarkt there was a fountain, the so-called milk fountain. When the main street was widened around 1830, the fountain was moved to the center of the square and the sculpture was integrated into the complex as a fountain figure. The pedestal was equipped with gargoyles and surrounded by an octagonal basin. Between 1870 and 1890, the large water basin was replaced by a cuboid base with three smaller shell pools. After 1900, the small surrounding green area was abandoned and the complex was framed by a stepped pedestal. In 1938-1940, a copy of the statue for the Kornmarkt was made, the original is located in the Electoral Palatinate Museum. Mary with gilded beam crown, star wreath and lily scepter carries the baby Jesus on her left arm and supports him with her right hand. It stands on a globe, which is also gilded and surrounded by a dragon snake, which is supported by four putti on a cloud structure, with the clouds permeated by golden rays. The baby Jesus has raised his right hand to a gesture of blessing, with his left he pushes a lance with a cross into the head of the dragon snake. The iconography of this representation follows the representation "Maria vom Siege". This picture motif takes place in the 17th. century in the course of the counter-reformation spread throughout Europe. In Heidelberg, for example, the fight against the dragon snake was to be discussed as a fight against Protestant "faith." Other attributes of the sculpture point to various aspects of the Marian cult: The radiant wreath with the 12 stars and the lilies refer to the immaculate conception of Mary. Crown and scepter symbolize Mary as the queen of heaven, the trample of the snake and the crescent moon at Mary's feet are indications of the wife of the apocalypse. The putti in the clouds stand for the Assumption of Mary, the rays in the clouds are the rays of grace that Mary grants to the world. —(reference) Wikipedia

The mural by Dutch artist JanIsDeMan features 18 book titles selected by Heidelberg residents—all with a connection to the city. Initiated by the Heidelberg Citizens' Foundation and supported by UNESCO (Creative City Heidelberg), the work was created to mark three anniversaries: 10 years of UNESCO City of Literature, 10 years of Metropolink, and 15 years of the Citizens' Foundation. The mural is JanIsDeMan's first project in Germany—a literary-urban homage to Heidelberg's diversity, even quoting Hilde Domin. Playground

Children's amusement center
The alla hopp playground in Heidelberg is a refreshing and enjoyable place to train, with various sports devices for activities such as skipping and running. Families with children can feel at ease here, as the entire facility is cleaned daily. The playground has convenient open hours from 7am to 9pm, and there are toilet facilities available. It is recommended to bring your own water, as there isn't a canteen nearby.
Superb playground for kids! Big area with multiple activity options for kids and adults. Offering enough space for all, even if it’s crowded. Workout options for adults available, too. All free of entry.

The whole group is kept clean daily. Open hours 7am -9pm. Toilets are available. Bring water to drink..no canteen around. Accessibility by bus. or bicycle or walking. Close to a camp site

The alla hopp has been one of the best inventions for parks in this area, but Heidelberg is not my favourite. Parking is inconvenient, there is a lack of shade during hot weather, the trees are still too small. The water playground, has potential, but the pump doesn't always work.
Pat. S — Google review
Great playground for children, but also a fantastic workout area for adults! Pull-up bars, dip bars, and other assorted bodyweight exercise equipment make this a great, free place to come and workout alone or with friends!
