So first the food. It's not bad really... pretty standard but not bad. I'd say it's fairly average for all the Americanized Chinese food I've had 50 plus years. The Kung Pao chicken was a little spicy but not much, and the flavor was ok. The chicken Lo Mein was on the bland side, but the noodles tasted fresh and there was lots of chicken pieces. Prices are reasonable for Palm Springs, and they have some lunch specials and some good deals if you arrive before 5:00pm. The portions are huge, each plate could feed two people as long as you're not very hungry. The hot and sour soup was pretty good, but when they say a cup they mean a small cup for sure. They brought me brown rice without asking if I wanted brown or white. Which they may only have the brown, you might ask if you go. A strong point here is the family that runs it are very friendly. Some younger ones of the family are helping out which is fine. They checked back on me a couple times. They do a LOT of take out business I noticed. The restaurant itself is clean, but on the small side and sparse. My biggest "odd" observation was actually the front door. Reminded me of a fire escape door at a theater. Just a solid metal double door. If they were to replace it with a nicer wood/glass window door it would go a long way of making the place a bit more inviting. Some pendant lighting above the booths instead of just can lights in the entire place would also help cozy things up a bit. But I digress. So for Chinese food in Palm Springs it's China King or fast food. I'd go back to China King to explore the menu a little, maybe pick up some quick take out some night. But I'd like to find some tastier dishes there, before I'd consider taking out of town friends. For now if they want chinese, I'd probably steer them to some Thai or just say ... The breasts were not tough, on the dry side, and BBQ’d too long, burnt like Portuguese BBQ chicken instead of tender and juicy like Malaysian/Thai/ satays. The difference may be in the size of each piece, since they are so big, they would naturally have to be cooked longer. Because they were so gigantic, it was not possible to enjoy them like bite-size appetizer satays. The rice was a bit dry (not enough water) some people like their rice tough, we prefer our rice more steamy & soft. In all honesty we are pretty disappointed in this new location. We kept an open mind through out our visit, and did have an enjoyable walk through the mall after dinner. I'm sure we will be back, but this location falls short of our dining expectations which is difficult to admit as much as we enjoyed the former location. I decided to order a combination plate which came with the entree, fried rice and spring roll (the menu egg roll). To my surprise when I paid a total of $7.5 tax inconclusive, I noticed that the bag was light. Like it almost had nothing. Since it was the first time ordering a combination plate, I decided to let it go. The fried rice was well fried. The grains of rice were crunchy and had the right amount of soy sauce. The spring roll was also crunchy, but the oil was not properly drained. The shrimp lobster sauce was different than what I'm usually used to. I know lobster sauce is not real lobster, but from my experience it's a hoisin sauce with ginger and garlic based. The lobster sauce was egg base which I found out it's another type of lobster sauce. The sauce had a good taste which garlic as a base ingredient and of course corn starch to keep it's thick form. Overall, the taste experience was of the food was mediocre as I was expecting the usual hoisin sauce lobster sauce. Now the main reason why I rate this restaurant poorly. For $7.5, I expected a decent portion of rice since rice is cheap. The entree was less, also. Thus, per the picture you can see that the portion is very small for what I paid. At any other chinese restaurant in the Coachella Valley, I would have received twice as much for the food they served me. Would reconsider this rating if the portion issue is resolved.
