It’s a lovely space and the ladies within it are enthusiastic, welcoming and happy to talk about the artist and the founding principles of the space. Currently on till the 18th of September 25 is a sensitive and beautiful solo exhibition by Bechir Boussandel “Tempted by Other Suns / Tente par D’autre Soleils” discussing gleaning and migration in a multi layered transformative materiality. The show does not carry in the digital, if you can make it in person please do so! The large mixed media oil and acrylic paintings surround a component based sculptural installation created from astonishingly esthetic cast glass bottles with stylised copper and aluminium birds perched on them. The original bottles were found discarded and collected by the artist who then collaborated with Sadika a glass artist who under his direction created the glass components for the installation. The layered colours and glazings within the paintings are in dialogue with the tones within the bottles, striking a tension of the natural world and mankind echoing the philosophical discussion of freedom of movement. It’s rare to find beauty and visual philosophy so intertwined. Unfortunately i don’t think I’ll be in Dubai to see the next show which sounds very interesting, however I’ll be following digitally and will be visiting in person next time I’m back in the country.
